It looks like it might be time for an OOC thread for you people after the girls. if need to make plans and gather gear you can hash out the specifics here.

Technically the "cooking utensils" tool covers my needs, I'm just running around for sundries as a roleplaying thing.

Woooo adventure!

Yeah, as a halfling, I always assume that "rations" involve a variety of meats, breads, and cheeses. And Doven will top off his hip flask before heading out, as well.

Sounds like a good time!

lol, ok guys. it looks as though you three are on the missing persons case. there are regular road and river routes north. the river routes are slow and winding and only go to the edge of the Wetlands, but it is really inexpensive. you could travel by barge for 1 silver per day including a basic breakfast.

road travel can be by a slow moving caravan, a faster coach service, horseback (or other mount), and by walking. however you want to go is up to you. i already know which one of you needs to be possessed by the evil spirits of h.p. lovecraft. so, there is that.

How would walking compare to a caravan or barge service in terms of time taken? I'm guessing we won't be able to afford the other options yet.

Yeah, I've got almost 20gp, but a cart and draft horse would be 65gp, not including feed (and I'm guessing none of us are flush with cash). We could probably afford a mule and cart, not sure whether that would help our time. Or maybe the expensive coach service is within reach?

a barge would put you at the edge of the Wetlands in ten days, ten silver/one gold. From the Wetlands overland via a passenger wagon in a trade caravan would put you in Lanis in another twelve days at a silver per day, no meals. but you could buy food easily enough when traveling with a caravan.

you can work for the caravan in a likely position such as guard, cook, porter, mule skinner, blacksmith, etc. for two to ten silver pieces per day. you would still have to cover meals, tools, etc. both of these modes of travel are very safe.

a private coach is a gold per day, but it could be in Lanis in eleven days from the town where you are now. much faster. you would stop at farms, towns, or way stations each night. You can get a meal, a bed, a drink, etc. at these stops at your own expense. the coach would average seven silver per day per person. the average overnight stay with a meal, a bed, and a pint of beer would  cost a silver per person per night. so, one eighty eight (8 gp 8 sp) per person for the whole trip. it is the fastest and pretty damned safe.

if you guys were to simply walk you could cover the distance a little faster than the barge/caravan and make it in sixteen days. that would be dedicated moving you little feets with dedication cross country marching. if you want to move along much slower it would be double, or thirty days. your food, comfort, safety, and savings are your own to worry with.

so, i honestly feel like i tried to hard with the sense of immersion in the world with the travel options. i didn't mean to force a block to the game over something this trivial. i apologize for this. please, by all means, pick the way you would like to travel and we shall assume you can afford it. you don't actually have to pay, you have little money as it is. think of it as a GM plot mechanic, which it is, to get you guys on your way to the big adventure.

again, sorry about this, i hate that i have held all of you up in game.

The earth had washed away from the stonework because of the storm. The water is washing over it, about four inches depth or so. it is hard to see clearly due the muddy water and poor general visibility, but it is definitely old stonework. It is no leap of imagination to imagine a flood tunnel underground.

just keep in mind that the tunnel is flooded, dark, cold, and possibly has a strong current. you will be relying on Athletics to swim, CON to hold your breath for any length of time, and skills like perception, investigate, or history to find any clues.

The tunnel was larger than they had suspected. Easily twenty feet wide and nearly twelve feet tall with a flat, flagstone floor and stacked blocks mortared into place to line the tunnel. It was more of a thoroughfare than a mere tunnel. It was old and seemed that the river, once above, had cut into the tunnel over the millennia. It was hard to say where it would lead, a tunnel that old, but what was sure was the markings on the wall was from a time before the current history of the world.

ok, so i didn't think to be more specific, this was all seen while your were underwater in the tunnel. i do apologize if that was confusing.

i forget that you people are a different species, mere players, and can't read nor understand the thoughts of a divine being like myself.

So, holding your breath, enduring freezing cold, and swimming against a mild current. three things become apparent.

1. this is an ancient underground travel route, like an underground highway for wagons
2. there are bodies along the floor, ancient corpses in armor that hasn't wasted away
3. the runes on the wall are in a language none of you know or can recognize

You do not recognize the magic involved, not by spell or by school
History 16
it occurs to you that the style of clothing is out of date by a significant factor, maybe as much as a century or two
Perception 11
you don't really notice anything out of the ordinary other than the strangeness of the moment
Insight 13
the clothing seems authentic, the fabrics and colors are those not currently in common vogue, even among the rural peoples

you are pretty sure that the schools of magic on display have been evocation and conjuration. actual spells cast/used are unclear.
Perception 23
after having sailed far, stolen much, and sold it all for a prophet you are convinced that the clothing is not only authentic, but so are the other bits of their dress. they seem to be completely adorned from an era around two centuries back that was exceedingly popular among thieves, vagabonds, pirates, counterfeiters, and nobles alike. either these people are from a different time or their entire attire ensemble is.
