Re: OOC

In reply to Yprish (msg # 121):

We can debate how well the descriptive narrative text used by the player as the character used the spell. But I loved the use of minor illusion in the player's intention. The GM will need to decide how well the Gnolls reacted to all of the actions done by the PCs. The GM may or may not decide for more information or rolls.

But I would hope that we can agree that the GM should decide what happens next.

Re: OOC

Pretty sure that means Yprish knows it's an illusion, the enemy would need to physically interact with it for the hiding to be moot. The enemy hasn't physically interacted with it yet far as I've seen, and Yprish hopefully already knows it's an illusion since he cast it.

Can it be ruled that Yprish has ruined his illusion? Sure. Do the rules as written prevent using an illusion to hide? Not at all.

Still needs all the usual stuff of Stealth checks, passive perception, etc etc etc. My only concern is Minor Illusion is an action, and Hiding is an action, and Yprish is a warlock, so long as the action economy is respected it's not really breaking anything to allow someone to TRY

Re: OOC

Hi folks. A DM ruling has been requested via PM.

However...

Una:
My only concern is Minor Illusion is an action, and Hiding is an action

I'm approaching this in the same way I'd approach a PC running behind a wall. It doesn't take longer to move behind a wall than it would to move to that space if there weren't a wall there, and line of sight would be cut off. It's just that the gnolls (perhaps) don't know there's a wall there, or why there should be a wall there.

How effective that illusory wall might be... that's for DM to decide. But I don't think I'm attempting to Hide in combat.

Re: OOC

minor illusion would be helpful to distract with, but it wouldn't create a likeness of someone. it is mostly to draw away a targets attention. besides, technically you cannot hide during combat as an action. if you
wanted to rem!in unseen just use stealth and go into hiding. but once you engage you will be seen.

I think the potential here is that it could look like cover. The the gnoll may or may not decide to shoot. Melee combatants would move around it or something.

Re: OOC

Thought I'd weigh in on this. Illusion is my fav sub school of spells, and I also plan to use illusion more with my character going forward.

Minor illusion would allow for the creation of something to hide behind. But only in a 5' cube. Thus a medium creature could only at best gain half cover and a small creature 3/4 to full cover. If you interact with the illusion then its revealed to be an illusion to anyone who saw the interaction. Silent image on the other hand would allow for the creation of something that would grant 3/4 to total cover to a medium creature and total cover to a small creature.

So if Yipsh plans on being behind it then it can grant partial cover. If he wants to hide in it the interaction will render it null and void for the duration of the interaction and for those that see the interaction.

Thats my understanding of how the spell functions.

In reply to Yprish (msg # 124):

why not just make a stealth roll for now. save the spell slot and see how the action shapes up. i'm sure what yrpish is planning to do so i can advise any further. if you are looking for a way to attack without being detected that is pretty much just not going to happen, everything you do in combat can give you away. if you were just looking for a way stay concealed as long as possible put a minor illusion out ahead of you like ten or fifteen feet and keep behind it and in other cover as well. sort a screen to help them not see you.

Re: OOC

Minor Image is a cantrip. So this will help the player gauge how to use it in the future.
And is there a way to include a descriptive text or something to let me know that you didn't forgot my action and the resulting SAVES by the gnoll?

Re: OOC

In reply to Game Dude (msg # 128):

I'm a melee build and 60' was a bad encounter distance for me; I'm not about to throw my primary weapon and contribute to their arms fund. Oh well, no worries. I was more concerned about closing the distance without drawing all the attention and attacks.

Since this is something folks seem to have opinions on, would you give combat applications of Minor Illusion a thought? Any ruling is fine, and we can dispense with the spell this time around. I'll take half-cover behind a tree, or something.

Re: OOC

In reply to Yprish (msg # 130):

i think a good use of the spell for combat would be the proverbial sound of an attack from behind, a wall of black that you step away through so it looks like you vanished when all you did was move back behind something an enemy can't see through, and so on. just remember that the illusion is a 5'x5'x5' area, or one map square. you are probably taller than that. others who are can see over such an illusion as well.

i am willing to work with you on a lot of stuff, but an illusion spell is limited in immediate use in melee combat sometimes. because there are so many things that could play into an illusions effectiveness i feel its best to deal with each situation as it arises. but i will never arbitrarily call the spell or your use of it useless. it's all situational.

Re: OOC

i ask for rolls and outcomes, it may or may not have a felt effect on a bad guy, usually you will be able to tell, but there may be times when you were actually effective but it wasn't obvious. i won't say so either way, not outright anyway, but i will describe the action so you should be able to discern what the outcome is.

Re: OOC

so, this game seems to have fizzled across the board. not sure if i just blew it up or killed the enthusiasm for it. but it is turning into one of those games i am having trouble keeping up with because so little is happening with it. i am considering shutting it down later this week.

but, before i do this i am will to hear any suggestions, gripes, complaints, rants, etc. that you may have. i do actually care about the state of my games and hate when they die a slow death.
