The Town of Ambal Corin

Ambal Corin is a small trade town overlooking the Nenar Bay. It is by far the largest town in the area though due to it’s port and access to the seas.

It has a population of around 800, with 54% Humans, 8% Half-elves, 8% Halflings, 7% Gnomes, 6% Dwarves, 6% Goblins, 5% Elves,  4% Half-Orcs, 2% Others

The town is run by its Lord Mayor Felius Cenn, and Town Council. It’s main economical activity happens in the Market Square where farmers trade and export their crops and merchants and traders offer goods from down the coast or overseas.

The main deity worshipped in town is Sarenrae, goddess of the Healing Flame, and the only temple in town is devoted to her. However the temple allows many small shrines to other good faiths to share their space, and numerous clerics of different deities work at the temple.

There is a 'native' custom in this region, based on old legends, but mostly practiced by local elves and a couple dwarves called the Starpath (translated from a long old elven name). It's practitioners are called Starpath Wanderers. Starpath Wanderers can be any adventurer but are mostly druids. They do have Champions (Redeemers) and Monks that take its cause as their deity though. Starpath Wanderers follow the 'destiny' laid out in the stars and seek to preserve the good in the world. They practice nonaggression, seeking to kill as little as possible, and step very lightly, constantly looking out for the ripple effect of their actions. They constantly seek to 'follow the stars' and thus never settle down in one place.

The most notable landmark of Ambal Corin is in the Town Center where a circle of large stones of varying sizes from a human to a horse sits. These are the Waystones, sacred to the native Elves and Gnomes, and a popular tourist attraction.

Town Districts

  1. Town Center
The Town Center is the main gathering for all social public events. At the very center sits the Waystones, large boulders of various sizes arranged in a circle. Surrounding this clearing are a number of townhouses for the wealthier residents. The Cenn Manor, which also doubles as a town hall, sits on the south border of the clearing.

     - Cenn Family Manor

  2. Market Square
The Market Square sits between the neighborhoods in the Town Center to the south and The Docks to the north. It is the most commercialized district, with a long straight road (Market Road) that is often filled to the brim with stalls, carts, and merchants in the day and lit up by tavern lights at night.

  3. Sarenrae's Way
To the east of the Town Center is Sarenrae's Way, the road to the Temple of Guiding Light. The Temple is one of the biggest complexes in town, housing the main shrine to Sarenrae, many smaller shrines to various other faiths, and a small library contained in the Sanctuary of Mother Lumitra.

  4. Volker's Guildhall
Volker's Guildhall is a collection of workshops and smithies to the west of the Market Square. The largest workshop is actually a building called Volker's Guildhall, although people normally just say 'the Guildhall' to refer to the building and 'Volker's Guildhall' to refer to the whole area.

  5. The Docks
The Docks refer to the actual docks, the shipyard, the port and lighthouse, and the surrounding neighborhood compiled of lower quality housing and shabbier inns, which many dockworkers and laborers live in.

     - 'The Old Man' Oak

  6. Ambar's Path
To the east of Market Square is Ambar's Path, where another cluster of workshops and stores sit. This was historically the home of most of the gnomes in town, who lived and worked in these stores. This is also where numerous magic shops and apothecaries are located, especially with the Sanctuary library just a little ways south and open to the public.

  7. North Denning
To the west of the Town Center is North Denning, the largest part of town and the primary residential district of the town's citizens. It's mainly comprised of humans, half-elves, half-orcs, and goblins.

     - Olivia's Cottage

  8. South Denning
South Denning is a less close knit neighborhood than its northern counterpart, where most of the halflings and some elves prefer to make their home. The population is more rural, with many families of farmers, woodsmen, and hunters living here. It is slowly opens up into more and more farming fields and forests as travelers head south and out of town.

The Barony of Dolen

Ambal Corin is the largest town in Baroness Irena vi Chavalia's lands, the northern region of Dolen. Chavalia Keep lies north of Ambal Corin, across Nenar Bay.

To the west is the Heloth Forest, and past that the Brisenic Mountain Range, which wraps around to the north. The Antinu River runs down from the mountain range and through the Heloth Forest, feeding into the bay.

To the east is the Berechor Sea, where trade ships travel up and down the coast, guarded by the Baroness's warships.

To the south lies numerous other human settlements, which are much more rural than Ambal Corin. Many farmers and traders from these villages make their way to Ambal Corin to trade.

The Heloth Forest is the ancestral home of the elves and gnomes in the area, although many have left their ancestral homes for generations now. Many of these communities are small and private, and although a couple of gnomish communes and elven lodges have made themselves known to the human settlements for trade, it is not assumed they are all identified.

The Brisenic Mountain Range is the ancestral home of the dwarves, goblins, and orcs in the region. Brisenic Hall is an ancient dwarven stronghold in the area, although it is strictly closed off to outsiders. Dwarves are free to leave the Hall though, and entire clans have left and settled in the surrounding towns. Brisenic Hall revokes the citizenship of any dwarf that chooses to leave, but returning dwarves are allowed to make their case before the King to rejoin the ranks. Goblin tribes and orc warbands litter the mountains and sometimes gather to attack and raid caravans or even small villages. Many goblins have taken to entering human villages to find their fortune more civilly. Orcs are less willing, although a couple of orcish warbands trade with human caravans, especially when they are at war with a rival warband.

Humans and halflings mostly immigrated to the region half a century ago when the human Stegaren Empire expanded into the lands. The Empire has largely ignored the Barony afterwards, as the Chavalia line of governors has largely paid their dues and kept to themselves. At the end of the day, Dolen is just a far flung fief at the edge of the world. Nothing important ever happens here.

Major Characters

  • Lord Mayor Felius Cenn is the current head of the Cenn Family. The Cenns are a minor noble house loyal to the Baroness, thus they are placed in charge of town at her direction. He never uses his full title of 'Lord Mayor' and he's decidedly less stuffy as well.

  • Mother Lumitra is the aged half-elf high priestess of Sarenrae in charge of the Temple. She is still a sharp wit and a sharp, intelligent, and organized mind though and she doesn't take well to those who break the Temple rules. Many children in town have a memory of her as she was the disciplinarian of the Temple School. The students dreaded getting sent to the High Priestess's office.

  • Sheriff Agizal Berg is the new half-orc Sheriff appointed by Mayor Cenn. Agizal runs the Wardens, which is basically the local law enforcement, but full-time Wardens are a rarity, and the Sheriff often deputizes eager citizens when he needs help.

  • Regis Baskers is the richest halfling in town. He may be the richest citizen in town, as even Mayor Cenn is rarely as nicely dressed as he is, even though Mayor Cenn is the noble. Regis Baskers finances numerous trade ships and merchants in town. He sits on the board of the local Bank as well.

  • Tweg is perhaps the best wizard in town, although sometimes it's hard to tell. She's an old gnome, but her colors are still as vibrant as a gnome half her age. Tweg is an experimenter by nature, but her experiments are hardly what one would think of for the most experienced town wizard. She puts on a fantastic fireworks display every year though, and she's currently working on a golem that finds small misplaced objects as soon as you forget where you put them.

  • Volker is the same dwarf that Volker's Guildhall is named after. He is 300 year old and claims that he and Rushara had a crafting contest in that guildhall when that section of town was going up. Of course, he won, which he happily chortles about to this day while berating the work of the local apprentices.

  • Rushara Glamordaen is one of the founders of the town, but now she's an old elf largely retired from daily life. She's been a key advisor for the town's development throughout its history although she has since retreated to the nearby elven lodge, Antinu's Rest, at the edge of the Heloth Forest.

  • Big Monty, it seems, is an ironic nickname, as Monty is short even by goblin standards. HE is often surrounded by bigger meaner looking goblins though. All the goblins in town know of Big Monty and everyone who employs the goblins know him too. Big Monty is the local Boss, and he doesn't let anyone mistreat his own. He also doesn't let any goblin disrespect him either, although he often has strange and bizarre punishments for those uppity goblins, like stealing all their spoons.

  • Baroness Irena vi Chavalia rules the lands of Dolen. Although her Keep is just across the Bay, she rarely makes appearances in town. Mayor Cenn usually visits her once a season with the taxes. When she has come through town, it's been at the head of a company of armored knights heading south to pacify a large orc warband. It's cemented her reputation to mean that if she's showed up, there's normally a massive problem and things are about to go down very soon.

Institutions in Town

  • Town Council: The Town Council was formed based on the initial charter drafted by the settling humans and halflings and the elves and gnomes of the area. Councilors are technically drafted by popular support, but in practice, they are just the most respected members of their communities, and they are rarely formally challenged for their seat unless a major scandal happens. Elections happen only when there is a challenge for a seat, and they are public town halls instead of paper ballots.
The Council is the main legislative body in town and is presided over by the Lord Mayor, although he himself does not get a vote.

  • Circle Bank: The Circle Bank is run in partnership with the Dwarven Circle of Merchants and the Dolan Trade Union. The Trade Union is one of the only Imperial influences in the area, with everything else being taken care of by the Baroness. Circle Bank has funded many of the most prosperous businesses in town.

  • The Wardens: As Ambal Corin is still relatively small, and a standing military force is so close by, Mayor Cenn only employs the Wardens, led by Sheriff Berg, to take care of any serious matters in town. There are merely 3 full time Wardens: the Sheriff and two Deputies. All other Wardens are deputized when needed, which is usually easy part-time work for most citizens.

  • Temple of Guiding Light: The Temple of Guiding Light originally came to preach and minister a couple hundred years ago, when the town was first becoming prosperous. They have since evolved into an integral part of the community. When Mother Lumitra became high priestess, she could not stand for the lack of established education in town. The Temple School became a mainstay of town, where local residents could send their children for schooling for a small donation (and most kids even attended for free). Clerics and monks of many different faiths, especially when stopping by the Temple grounds or renting space for their own worship services, often repaid their rent by teaching various courses.

  • Monty’s Gang: The goblins in town have always had their own undercurrent of dealings in town. Although many take to the town's culture pretty readily, many also have their own eccentricities that cause problems and misunderstandings. This combination and their old traditions has led to a constant informal mafia taking shape in town. Goblins respect a big bad, someone who gets things done and can beat up other goblins when they get uppity. Big Monty is the big bad (even though he's rather short), but he is the leader, and he is the biggest goblin advocator in town, helping immigrants and former tribals get their first jobs and find homes. Of course, he collects his dues from all these working goblins for his help, usually in a percentage of their wages and occasionally some shiny silverware.
