It was 3 weeks later and you've been in the castle at the old capital for about a fortnight now.

You've had time to settle into your new rooms and carry out your duties in the run up to the tournament.

Today You've been asked to help organise the opening ceremonies, with a meeting planned with the alchemist guild to supply some fireworks.

Epineh started doing just that.

You head over to the Alichmist guilds guildhouse and enter, it's set slightly away from the other buildings and is surrounded by a stout stonewall.

The entrance opens into a small foyer with a desk and some chairs. Sat at the desk is an older looking human, with long white hair and a busy beard that was just as white.

"Hello there, can I help you?" He asked in a squeaky voice.

"Hello, I'm here to check on the order of fireworks for the opening ceremonies," Epineh said.

""Fire in the open chimney you say?" The old man replied looking somewhat confused.

Epineh leaned forward and spoke louder this time.

 "Oh of course. Sorry my old ears don't work too well, too close to one too many explosions" he said "I'll just fetch the guildmaster for you" He added and then scurried off.

Returning soon thereafter with a middle aged man, with close cropped auburn hair, and grey eyes that were almost white. "Ah your highness. We were not expecting someone of your standing. Please forgive me for being here to greet you" He said with a bow "I am Lucian Valentino, guildmaster here in the old capital"

"It's fine and a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Valentino," Epineh said.

"The pleasure is all mine" Valentino said "Please join me in my office. We have much to discuss" he said leading the way to his well appointed office.

"Please sit" he said indicating the nearby chairs and taking one himself "We... we may have a slight problem in meeting your requirement.." he said in a nervous tone "You see we had an incident"

"Oh? What is the problem?" Epineh asked.

"We had your order all prepares but.." Valentino said and the paused chewing on a nail "Well to be honest someone stole them"

"Oh. Do you have any idea who took them? Is it possible to make more?" Epineh asked.

"We can make more but it will take time" Valentino said "but I'm worried, while I can't explain how we make the fireworks. I can tell you that, they could be used to make a large explosion"

"Are there people unhappy with the Games?" Epineh asked.

"We are not sure who stole it or why" Valentio admitted "They could be planning to just sell them for profit, after all stolen goods are never sold at a loss. But I fell I'd be remiss if I didn't warn you about the other possibilities"

"You start on them and I'll see if I can track down the stolen ones. Can you show me where they're kept?"

Valentino looks relived "Of course your highness" he said standing "If you would follow me" he leads you through the guildhouse and out into a small courtyard with smaller external buildings.

"As you can imagine we don't store them in the main guildhouse, that could be probematic" he explained as he lead you over to one of the small buildings. The heavy door that should have been in the doorway was instead laying on its side.

"They were in here" he said indiciating the single stone room.

"Who has access to where they were stored?" Epineh asked.

"Any member of the guild can access this area, its were we story many of the things we produce or work with" Valentio said "But guild members would have access to the keys, they would not need to remove the door"

He thinks for a moment "Someone with the right paperwork from the Royal or Ducal familes could gain access as well, but they should have been escorted"

"Was there anyone from the royal family before I visited?" Epineh asked.

"I don't think so, the order was placed by letter" Valentio said after a moment "We shall have to consult the books, all visitors are logged"

"Certainly, please let me know if there was anything strange. Please send a list of everyone who was logged in between the last time the fireworks were seen and they were stolen," Epineh said. "I have somethings to do now to search for them."

"Of course Highness, anything we can do to help" Valentino said.

"Thank you, I'll be off now," Epineh said, leaving and heading for where the family was staying.

You leave the guildhouse and travel across the city back to the small castle, more a fortified manorhouse that your family is staying in.

As you enter the Manor courtyard you spot your younger brother taking his swordsmenship lessons from one of the knights.

"How's the training going?" Epineh asked.

Your brother Ellias looked up and smiled broadly at you "I'm doing good Sis" he said trying to stand tall "Do you think Father would let me enter the Games? I reckon I could win"

"I doubt he would. I'm sure you'd do very well, but I doubt you want to marry me," Epineh said.

Ellias pulls a face at the idea "Who'd want to get married at all? Girls are silly.. Well not you but your not really a girl..girl"

"I don't really have much of a choice. The Games are tradition here," Epineh said.

Ellias considers that for a long moment "I think you should just do what you want... What's the point in traditions if they make you sad"

"It'd be nice if things were that simple. The nobles pressured Father and a king needs the support of the nobles," Epineh said. "If I refuse I get disowned and become very unpopular."

Ellias looks a bit confused as he tries to work through all that "I'd still love you though.." he said eventually before being called back by the knight that was training him for another round of practice.

"Thank you," Epineh called after Ellias as she headed off to search the area.

Lady Alisha spots you searching around the manor "Ephineh, What are you doing? I thought you were organizing the fireworks for the opening ceremony?"

"Someone stole them, and since they can be used as an explosive weapon, I thought maybe someone wanted to blow either us or the arena, up," Epineh said.

Lady Alisha face paled slightly "That's worrying news, should we not let your father know as well?" she asked as she moved to help you look.

"Yes, I suppose we should let him know," Epineh said.

You and Alisha spend several hours going through the Manor house but you don't find any sign of the fireworks.

"I suppose we should tell father now," Epineh said.

Lady Alisha nods and you got to look for your father, at first you can't find him but then one of the servants tells you that he's gone to the arena to make an inspection.

"I'm heading to the Arena," Epineh said.

"As you wish Ephineh" Alisha said "I'll join you, I hope this all leads to nothing though"

"I sure hope so," Epineh said as the walked.

You walk through the city and soon arrive at the arena. Several Palace Guardsmen are patrolling the area and two are guarding the entrance.

"Halt, who goes there?" The righthand guard challenges.

"Epineh," Epineh said.

The guard on the left sighs "Sorry your highness, he's new" he said glaring at the other Guardsmen. "Can we help you?"

"I was hoping to speak with father for a moment," Epineh said.

"I Think the king is doing an inspection tour of the preparations for the opening ceremony " the Guardsmen said "he should be on the main floor of the arena"

"Thank you," Epineh said, heading inside.

You head inside and easily find your way to the main floor of the arena, the wide open area is overlooked by tiers of stone seats that loom over it.

At the far end you see you father examining the view of the royal box from the arena floor.

Epineh went over to him.

The king looked surprised at your appearance "Ephineh I thought you were busy with the Alchemist guild today?" He said when you got closer.

"About that...," Epineh said before explaining things.

Your fathers face grows increasingly concerned "That's deeply worrying" he said "You say you've searched the manor?"

"Yes, but a second one couldn't hurt," Epineh said.

"We'll get the guard to start looking" the king said and he dispatched some Guardsmen to do that.

"But you also think we are a target here?" He asked.

"I think so, yes. Either at the manor or the arena," Epineh said.

"Then we should search here" he said and ordered more guards to begin searching "We should start with under the royal box, if anywhere was a target I think it would be there" he suggested

"Sounds like a plan," Epineh said.

Your father lead the way seemingly intent on joining the search.

To the search!

You leave the arena floor and enter the warren of rooms and tunnels under the seating.

Your father leads you to the area roughly under the royal box "Around here I think" he said.

Epineh began to search.

You start searching alongside Alisha and your father, when you hear sounds coming from a nearby room.

Epineh went to investigate.

You approach the room and from within can hear a voice speaking in a harsh language you don't understand, it seems like it's maybe giving orders.

Epineh went to look.

Peering carefully into the room you can just about make out 3 figures, 2 are short, purple with extended faces, that include maws full of fangs, they sport leathery wings, and down there backs are a multitude of spines, they are stacking barrels under the supervision of a tall muscular humanoid, with tendrils hanging from face that writhe with a life of thier own.

Epineh blinked, a loss for words as to what she was looking at.

The creatures continued to work, the bearded one gestures angrily when one of the small spiked creatures drops a barrel, that c4acks slightly some powder drifting out of the barrel.

Epineh pulled back.

"Monsters," she whispered.

"Epineh have you found anything?" You hear your father call from nearby and you hear the creatures suddenly fall silent.

Dei stepped out.

"I suggest you stop what you're doing."

The tall bearded creature turns to look at you and suddenly you hear a voice in your head "What do you want human child? Who are you to command us?"

"I am the princess of this country and I can't allow you to hurt anyone," Epineh said.

You hear the rumbling laugh as it chuckles at your rely "Well now isn't that something. I'm fairly sure my master mentioned you.." his voice appeared in your head again "Besides there are three of us here, and just you. I don't think those odds are in your favour"

"Could you go and get Alisha and some guards?" Epineh called out. "Quickly please."

Showing trust in Epinehs judgement your father doesn't question you, you can hear his footsteps retreating in the distance.

The creature chuckles again "Well now, brave aren't we to face us alone. I remember what my master said now... sadly we can't play to rough" the voice sounded regretful about that "But.." he rasies a hand and snaps a finger and one of the smaller creature scuttles forwards "I think it would be unfair not to reward your braverly" the smile on its face was ghastly as it spoke.

The creature hisses at you and raises its trident like weapon.

Dei began to chant a spell, before pointing at the imp as missiles of pure force shot out at it.

(OOC: Casting 2nd level magic missile. Damage - Epineh Alena Grimmory Ashmore rolled 13 using 4d4+4)

The strange creature hisses at you as your magic missiles slam into it, foul smelling Ichor drips down and sizzles as it lands on the ground.

It raises its tail and extends the spines on it before flicking the tail towards Epineh sending two of the spines in your direction,  one goes wide and one catches you bursting into flames.

Epineh let out a cry and began to cast another spell.

(OOC: Casting Frostbite on it - Epineh Alena Grimmory Ashmore rolled 6 using 2d6. Con save DC - 17)

The creature let out a yellow of pain as the spell hit it and began to retreat, only to freeze  at a barked command from its leader. It looked hesitantly over its shoulder and then let out a gurgling scream of pain as its leader slashed it with its glaive.

"Well that was disappointing, but I suppose one can't expect better of a lowly Spined Devil" the voice said in you head as the creature flicked blood off its glaive.

Epineh shook her head.

"What was the point of that?" she asked as she began to cast a spell.

(OOC: Level 3 magic missile. Damage - Epineh Alena Grimmory Ashmore rolled 17 using 5d4+5)

The bearded devil looked shocked "Now why would you do that?" It said looking surpised at the attack "I think, that you need to be reminded of your place, my master will thank me for doing so as long as I don't kill you" it snarled the earlier politeness vanishing.

Behind you you can hear your father, Alisha and the guards rapidly approaching behind you.

Epineh cast the same spell again.

(OOC: Level 3 magic missile again - Epineh Alena Grimmory Ashmore rolled 18 using 5d4+5)

The shock on the devils face changes to rage, and it moves forward to attack, but both the strange beard and the glaive miss you.

The spine devil keeps back seemingly unsure what to do.

Epineh kept up with the only spells she could really use here.

(OOC: A level 2 magic missile. Epineh Alena Grimmory Ashmore rolled 18 using 4d4+4)

The devil staggers back under the attack as a series of darts blast into its body "That wasn't how this was mean to go" it said into your head and then collapsed in a heap.

The other creature looked back and forth for an escape.

"You had better surrender," Epineh said.

"You no hurt Graz?" a thin reedy voice spoke into Epinehs head "Graz do what told... Graz not bad"

Your father and Alisha arrived behind you "Epineh what happened?" they ask.

"Uh, some kind of fiends," Epineh said. "Is there some way we can unsummon you?"

Graz considered that for a moment "Banishment spell would send me to my own plane" it suggested.

"Can you do a banishment spell?" Epineh asked her companion.

Lady Alisha shook her head "No, that is a more powerful magic than I am capable of" she admitted.

"Well, we should do something, it was nice of him to surrender," Epineh said.

Alisha looked at Epineh for a long moment  "Epineh it's a demon, I don't think nice exists in thier vocabulary"

"...yes it was silly, but I have used up a lot of magic," Epineh siad.

Graz looked between you and Alisha "What say? Graz go home?" It asked in your head.

"We don't have the magic to, but if we kill you, don't you end up back in the Abyss?" Epineh asked.

Graz considered that "That is true"

"So, um, could you close your eyes?" Epineh asked.

Graz nodded "You iz good human, Graz warn you bad humans here. They want to kill King, make Princess wife" it said and then closed its eyes.

"Sorry," Epineh said as she went in for a coup de grace with her dagger.

The demon collapsed and its body began to fizzle away into nothingness.

You father walks forward and puts a hand on Epinehs shoulder "Well done" he said.

Epineh stood there for a moment.

"I hope that's all the black powder."

"We should continue the search" the King said "Lady Alisha if you would stay with my daughter please"

"I can still go one," Epineh said.

The king nods "I'm sure you can. But I'd feel better if you had someone with you, in case you run into trouble again. Please indulge me on this"

Epineh nodded.

Lady Alisha took up position nearby as the king an guards headed out to search the rest of the arena.

"I suppose we should get some guards to return the powder to the fireworks people," Epineh said.

"Good idea" Alisha agreed "But I do worry what it says about whoever is planning this, that they are able to summon creatures from the abyss"

"He's either a magic user or has one on his payroll," Epineh said.

Alisha considers that "How easy would it be to learn that magic?" She asked.

"I don't know personally, but I imagine it's pretty advanced," Epineh said.

"Might be worth researching" Alisha suggested "It could give us evidence to catch whoever was behind this"

"Let's make sure there's no more powder here," Epineh said.

"Of course your highness" Alisha said and the pair of you resumed the search.

You search through several rooms, and at least once get lost in the maze of tunnels under the stands. But eventually several hours later you meet back up with Epineh's father and the guards "It seems like that was the only store of powder" Epineh's father said. "Did you find anything else?"

"No, we didn't find anything," Epineh said.

"Then I think we can declare the Arena secure. I will order the guard doubled from now on though" The King said "We can't let this happen again"

"Yes, father, we should return this powder as well," Epineh said. "I'll over see that."

"Thank you Epineh" he said "You've done very well today. A lot of people could have been hurt, if not for your quick actions"

"Thank you, father," Epineh said as she began to instruct the guards.

The guards quickly organise a cart to transport the powder back to the alchemists guild.

Epineh follows to make sure of a few things.

The cart reaches the guild House and you see Valentino waiting for you and the powder. He bows deeply at your approach "your highness, my appreciation for your quick actions is beyond words"

"Don't mention it," Epineh said. "Is this all of it?"

Valentino examined the cart and pulled a ledger out "Yes, it appears to be" he eventually said "We can now produce the fireworks as promised"

"Good. Thank you very much," Epineh said. "I do have a more general question for you. Are there any particularly skilled mages in the city?"

Valentino considered that for a few moments "Well, most of the mage schools and guilds moved away when the capital moved. But I there are a few left, they have a small atelier next to the library" he said.

"Thanks, I'll go check that out," Epineh said.

The guildmaster was already directing his staff to move the powder "Of course Princess. Do you require anything else from us?" He asked.

"No, thank you," Epineh said. "You have been most helpful."

Valentino bowed and followed his staff into the guild.

"So the library then?" Lady Alisha asked.

"Yes, let's see if we can get any clues about who this wizard is," Epineh said.

You travel to the library, it's a fair sized building and once it of been clad in white marble but the passing of time has dulled the sheen.

You make your way inside and find yourself in the main atrium, light pouring in through several large window, you glance about, but don't see anyone nearby.

"I wonder where everyone is?" Epineh asked.

Alisha looked about for a long moment "Maybe further in?" She suggested.

Epineh continued looking.

You walk deeper into the library, you eventually spot a small draconic creature sitting on a table, look8ng around.

"Hello?" Epineh asked.

The creature looked at you and chirped excitedly, you get a sudden impression in your head of welcome coming from the creature.

"Are you the librarian?" Epineh asked.

The creature cocked its head, and then shook it, again you got a feeling in your head this time indicating negative.

The creature then chirped again and took flight gliding a short distance, before landing on a stack of books and looking at you over its shoulder.

Epineh followed the dragon thing.

It repeated the act a few more times eventually leading you to a nook where a young looking female elf was slumped over a desk gently snoring.

Epineh went over and gently woke the woman up.

"I wasn't sleeping I was just resting my ey..." The women began saying and then her eyes widened as she saw Epineh "Princess.. Oh Gods I'm so sorry" she said words spilling out of her mouth and glanced at the pseudodragon "Why didn't you wake me up?"

"It's fine," Epineh said. "Don't worry yourself."

"Right..ah.." that reply seemed to throw the elf for a moment "How can I help you your highness?" the pseudodragon had landed on her shoulders by this point and was lazily spread across them. "Oh I'm Archivist Bethany..." she said finally remembering to introduce herself.

"Well, Bethany, we were interested in trying to find who in the city is capable of some high powered magic," Epineh said.

"High powered magic" Bethany said blinking slowly "In the Kingdom as a whole? Or more locally?" she asked.

"In the old capital, sorry," Epineh said.

"Well the strongest mage still in resident is probably Alric, he's the leader of the local Wizards" Bethnany explained "He should be in their atelier"

"Do you know if can summon fiends?" Epineh asked.

Bethnay looked shocked at the suggestion "I should think not, that is forbidden magic. Fiends have no place on this plain" she replied.

"I would like you to keep this just between us," Epineh said, leaning in closer. "But someone had summoned fiends to set a trap for the royal family in the arena. I'm trying to find what wizards would have the skill to summon them."

The color slowly drained from Bethnays face "That's horrible" she replied in a small voice "I will of course help you anyway we can. We should head over to the atelier" she suggested "They do have some volumes that are kept under lock and key that might tell you such things"

"Thank you. You have been most helpful," Epineh said.

Bethnay leads you towards a door on the left side of the library and produces a silver key and unlocks it "Father, the Princess is here to see you" she called out as she stepped in and gestured for you to follow.

Epineh followed her.

You enter the atelier, it seemed to consist of large central room with several doors leading off it probably leading to smaller rooms, perhaps living quarters for the members of the atelier, and a spiral staircase leading around the edge to a higher level.

"That's odd" Bethnay said "I thought he'd be in the main workspace" she said looking about.

"Let's look for him," Epineh said.

Bethnay nods "The side rooms on this level are the private study rooms, the next level has the living quarters, and the top floor has the library" she explained looking about "These old men are so forgetful..." she muttered "probably got distracted researching something"

"Let's start on this floor and work our way up," Epineh said.

You spread out and start checking the study rooms, several appear to have been recently in use but you don't find any of the wizards.

Epineh went to the next floor and searched there.

You check the living quarters area and find a similar story. It looks like it was in use only a short time ago, partially eaten food or chores left half done.

On to the last one.

You head up the stairs and find the first other person in the atelier, an older human seemingly rushing up the stairs, but now stuck in place.

"Hi," Epineh said.

The wizard didn't respond but you noticed the eyes flicking towards you and looking imploring at you.

Epineh let the wizard past her, but followed them.

You head up the stairs past the frozen man and spot several others similarly stuck in a moment of time. "What's going on?" Bethnay said from behind you as she followed.

"I'm not really sure. The wizards seem stuck or something," Epineh said.

Bethnay looked worried about that "We have to find my father" she said "He'll know what to do"

"Let's keep looking then," Epineh said.

You move further into the library finding what is probably the rest of the wizards of the atelier, and in the middle of the library you find a male elf in wizard robes standing infront of a low set of bookshelves, sat on top of the shelves was a strange green crystal that seemed out of character for the rest of the decoration in the room.

"Father!" Bethnay cried and ran up to elf wizard "Father?" she repeated in a smaller voice when the elf didn't reply.

Epineh went for the crystal.

The crystal was warm to the touch and seemed to pulse slightly at your touch. It feels like it has some sort of magical effect bound to it, but without more investigation you can't work out what.

You examine the crystal and are fairly sure its behind the what ever magical effect is effecting the wizards. "Princess... do.. do you know whats wrong with my father?" Bethnay asks.

"It seems to be something to do with this crystal," Epineh said.

Bethnay looked at crystal "I don't recognize that" she said after a brief moment "I don't think that was here before"

"It is emanating some sort of magic, probably what's effecting everyone," Epineh said.

"What do we do?" Bethnay asked worriedly.

"I'm not sure," Epineh said. "Maybe if we break it?"

She raised it above her head and threw it down.

The crystal hit the floor, with a odd cracking sound that seemed to vibrate in the air. The crystal was cracked in several places but not shattered.

Something drew your eye and you noticed several of the mages were now moving, but ever so slowly as if still stuck.

Epineh did it again.

You throw the crystal down again and this time it does shatter, the elf blinks a few times and straightens but before he can speak Bethnay embraces him "Father, you're okay I was worried" she said.

Epineh just stood there, observing.

"Yes, I'm okay now thanks to you both" The elf said inclining his head "I am arch-magus Alric" he added introducing himself "how may we assist you princess?"

"I was trying to find out how many mages in the old capital were capable of summoning fiends," Epineh said.

Alric frowns "As I'm sure you are aware that such practices are forbidden" he replied carefully.

"Yes, but some has used summoned fiends to attack the royal family and potentially kill many more beyond that," Epineh said.

Alrics face becomes concerned "That is worrying, we were all here because someone else had set off an alarm spell on the restricted tomes section" he explained "while the use of such spells is forbidden we do retain tomes on it, if only so we can identify there use"

"Are there any other highly skilled mages in the city?" Epineh asked.

"Some of the noble families employ powerful mages" Alric suggests "maybe..hmm the most powerful are probably employed by your father or the ducal families"

"I figured as much," Epineh said.

He examined the bookcase where the crystal had been and stopped "The book containg the fiend summoning rituals its gone" hecsaid finally.

"That figures," Epineh said and sighed. "Did anyone get a look at them before the crystal was activated?"

The elf shook his head "No, when I arrived there was only the crystal" he said "But we do have a tracing spell on all the restricted books" he added "if they have not found and deactivated it, it will lead us to them"

"Ah good. Please do that," Epineh said.

Alric went over to a nearby cupboard and produced a small disk inlaid with runes and places it on an outstretched palm.

He then channels some magic into it, almost instantly the disk begins to turn on his palm indicating a specific direction.

"It looks like it is still active" he said after a moment. "Bethnay if you could you please assist the princess in recovering the book" he said passing the tracking disc to the young mage.

"Thank you for your help," Epineh said to the old mage.

Bethany took the disc and nodded to Epineh "Shall we go then Princess?" the young elf mage asked.

"Lead the way," Epineh said.

Bethnay picked up a staff before leading you out of the building pausing every so often to check the disc "Your highness.... Do you really think one of the noble houses would be plotting against your family?" she asked hesitantly.

"We have found evidence of it," Epineh said.

"That's worrying" Bethnay said clutching the staff tightly as she checked the disc again "And you think they are involved in attacking my father and stealing the book?"

"It seems likely," Epineh said.

Bethnay was quiet for a while and then squeaked when the disc pointed at a particular building what seemed to a dormitory of some kind "If they did that, then I'm at your service your highness" Bethnay said "You helped my father after all"

"Thank you," Epineh said. "It looks like we found them quickly."

 "The old capital isn't too big, and the library is in the noble quarter  " Bethnay said "how should we do this princess?"

"I think we should go in and confront them," Epineh said.

Bethnay blinked at that and seemed slightly surprised "As you say, your highness"

Epineh headed towards the dorm.

As Epineh approaches the dorm, she is stopped by two guards posted outside "Halt" the first says "No entry is permitted" adds the other.

"May I ask why?" Epineh asked.

The first guard to speak gestures at the building "They say its plague, milady. The Duke himself issued the decree"

"We have tracked a stolen book of powerful magic here," Epineh said.

"That is impossible" the guard insists "The building has been sealed for days now" he replies.

Epineh gestures for Bethany to come over.

"This is a way to track the tome and is indicating inside there," she said.

Bethany showed the item to the guard who peered at it for a long moment "I'm sorry but you'll need a warrant to gain entry" he said stiffly.

"I really hate to have to do this, but are you aware of who I am?" Epineh asked.

The guard looks at you for a long moment and the pales slighty "Princess... I..." he looks nervous "Would you allow me to contact the Duke to arrange your access?" he stammered.

"Certainly," Epineh said.

The Guardsmen signalled his comrade and they retreated a short distance to have a huddled conversation.

The chatty Guardsmen then returns to his post by the door while the other runs off.

Epineh waited, politely.

Lady Alisha whispers to Epineh as they wait "Do you think it wise to wait your highness? What if the Duke refuese to grant us access in a timely fashion?"

"We can tell if the book moves," Epineh said.

Lady Alisha considers that for a moment and then nods.

Eventually Epineh sees the guardsmen returning, he walks up to the group and salutes "I'm sorry your highness but the Duke has said that while he can arrange you visit to the building it will take some time, so as to ensure your safety. He hopes you understand"

Behind you Bethnay gives a small squeak as the disc begins to move in her hands, Lady Alisha moves to stop her saying anything infront of the guards.

"I'll head back to where I'm staying then," Epineh said, heading away, before ducking into an alley way when out of sight.

Once you are in the alleyway Bethnay shows you the disk it seems to be pointing downwards.

"I guess we need to go into the sewers," Epineh said.

Bethnay nods "I think the nearest entrance might be a little over that ways" she indicates a direction "There should be an outflow, into a canal"

"Let's get going then," Epineh said.

You fairly quickly reach the entrance, rusted iron bars cover much of the access point, but several have been twisted apart to allow someone to pass through.

You can't see to far ahead into the gloom, but you can tell its fragrant.

"The things I have to do...," Epineh said, heading inside.

Lady Alisha grumbles along side you something about cleaning her armour. Bethnay doesn't say much, but does conjour some light for your group to see by.

The tunnel continues forward into the dark, the path down the side of the sewer water is only wide enough for 1 person at a time to walk along, the sewer it's self doesn't appear too deep at this point...

Epineh continued on.

The group advances further down the sewer eventually reaching a crossroad style junction. Bethnay looks at the disc and then points "It looks like its over in that direction" she said pointing at the opposite corner to where you are. "We could go either straight ahead or to the right" she said.

"Let's try to the right," Epineh said.

The way to the right leads down a passage, ahead Epineh can see some rubble where it seems the ceiling partially collapsed.

The tunnels seem safe an quiet.

"How does the tracking device look?" Epineh asked.

Bethnay checks the disc and looks up at Bethnay "Looks fine your highness, still in the same direction" she said.

"Let's continue then," Epineh said.

The group continues down the corridor, as you all scramble over the rubble you notice strands of webbing attached to some of the rocks.

How big did the webs appear to be?

Large strings almost the size of thin ropes that seem to be set up as trip wires.

"We have some biiiiig spiders," Epineh said.

Just as Epineh says that there is a sudden squeak of dismay behind you as Bethnay stumbles and catches one of the webstrands.

"We had better get ready fast," Epineh said.

You hear a rustling chittering sound and then around half a dozen spiders the size of large dogs crawl out of spaces in the wall of the sewer or emerge from dark corners.

The spiders split 2 attacking each of the party. Bethnay barely dodges an attack, the other spider leaps at her and the elf raises a hand and a flash of energy blocks the attack.

Lady Alisha strikes one of the spiders before it can react driving her sword deep into it, the other tries to bite her but is blocked by her shield.

The two spiders facing Epineh split and try to attack from different directions, but miss time the attacks and just succeed in getting in each others way.

Epineh cast a firebolt at the one attack ALisha.

The spider attacing Lady Alisha screams in pain and collapses sizzling, Alisha briefly salutes you and moves to assist Bethnay.

She arrives just as the spider manages to bite the elf, who cries out in pain and she retaliate with a blast of cold that freezes  several of the spiders legs.

The other spider turns to engage Alisha but still has little luck in attacking the well armoured women.

The two engaging Epineh attack again one misses stumbling as it tries to bit her. The others fangs sink into Epinehs side.

Dei grimaced and cast a swarm of magic missiles at the spider that bit her.

The spider Epineh targeted explodes under the rain of energy bolt strikes falling apart. Alisha quickly despatches the spider facing her. And the last two spiders begin to retreat.

Alisha cleans her blade and checks on Bethnay before turning to Epineh "Are you okay Epineh? " She asked.

"I'm mostly okay," EPineh said.

"That's good" Alisha said checking over Bethnay "Bethnay appears to be okay as well. We should probably move on before those spiders come back" she suggested.

"Let's go," Epineh said, heading out.

You follow the sewer round and then ahead hear some low voices "Was that fighting?" one said in a hoarse whisper.. No one said anything about fighting" it said in a whinny sort of tone "Shut up and keep moving" another gruffer voice said.

Epineh continued forward, after the voices.

You eventually spot about 4 individuals ahead carrying torches 2 seem to be guards, 1 a noble by his dress and bearing, and the last a scrawny unkempt looking human male, cradling a large book to his chest.

"I'm going to suggest you stop right there," Epineh said.

The scrawny figure squeaks in fright and drops the book, scrambling to pick it up. The guards move forward, while the drops back "Who are you to order me?" The noble says and gestures the guards to advance.

"The princess," Epineh said. "And I suggest you surrender."

As Epineh spoke the guards froze and the scrawny figure paled once holding the book tight. The noble on the other hand sneered "I don't see why I should I have real warriors on my side you have what? A traine mage, and a fool playing at being a warrior" Alisha growled at the comment and took a half step forward "No, I suggest you surrender, come quietly and I promise no harm will come to you"

Epineh laughed.

"That's cute. If you men surrender and help us take him into custody, you will be given mercy."

The guards stop and look at Epineh and her group, then to each other, then to the arrogant noble and then back. Behind them the noble stamps his foot in anger and yells "Do as I say or I'll have you flogged!" He yells at them turning an alarming shade of red.

The guards look at each other again, and then turn and grab the noble. "As you say princess" one replies.

Whilst this is happening Epineh notices the last member of the group trying to crawl away.

"You won't be getting away," Epineh said to them and moved towards them.

Bethnany moves with Epineh and inserts herself in front of the man he utters another squeak of fright and drops the book, before moving backwards nearly colliding with Epineh.

"Oh gods please don't kill me... I didn't mean any harm.. I just wanted to do magic" he started crying as he spoke.

"The offer was for mercy," Epineh said.

Too light Epineh realises that the wizard was playing for time as he finishes muttering an incantation under his breath.

You feel the spell brush against you but are easily able to deny its effects, you see however the shocked expression on the faces of the others around you as they begin to move as if stuck in deep water.

"Curse you princess" the wizard hisses as he begins to run.

Epineh hurried after him.

The wizard races ahead and for a moment it appears he might even outrun Epineh when he comes to a sudden halt, as he gets caught in a web neither of you had seen.

"Help me!" he screams as something further down the tunnel seems to stir and the wizards flailing attempts to free himself.

"Quiet down," Epineh said as she looked at what it was. Another spider?

The wizard ignored Epineh continuing to flail and scream only succeeding in getting himself further wrapped up.

Peering into the gloom ahead you can make out the creature and it does seem to be a single spider, different to the ones you met previously. This one has a much larger and heavier body, and seems to be in no great hurry to reach you.

"Let's see. Are you intelligent?" Epineh asked it.

The spider doesn't seem to reply, and moves closer. As it moves into a pool of light you can see its chitinous is various shades of mottled brown that help it to blend into the shadow.

[OOC: It's about 30-40ft away now]

Epine prepared to cast a firebolt.

Behind you you can hear some footstepscas someone approaches from behind, but the footsteps sound unusually slow.

The wizard has finally stopped struggling and just whimpers in fear the spider continues to advance closing the distance it's focus on the prey wrapped in its Web.

The spider halts in surprise as the firebolt impacts it blackening a part of the carapace.

Epineh chanted fireball, aiming to just catch the spider.

The spider shrieks and topples over curling up as it crisps in the flame, you can feel the blackblast of heat from the fireball exploding, and down the tunnel webs catch fire and rapidly burn.

Epineh took out her dagger and worked on freeing the mage.

The mage was sobbing with relief as the others finally caught up to you. Seemingly moving normally again.

Bethnay frowns down at the man, then looks at Epineh "I think maybe, we should bound and gag him for now" she suggested "so we don't have a repeat, slow spells are not fun"

"I agree," Epineh said. "Now let's get out of these blasted sewers."

Between your group you are able to bind the wizard and move back to the surface, your prisoners and erstwhile allies in tow.

Epineh headed for a guard outpost.

You arrive at an outpost and are quickly ushered inside the oddicer in charge bowing deeply. "How can I you, your highness?" He asked.

"This man and his mage stole a tome from the mage's guild and summoned fiends to try and murder both myself and the King," Epineh said.

The officer blanches at that and orders the men taken into custody. "Thank you your highness for apprehending these criminals.  I promise they will be dealt with" he said.

"It is appreciated," Epineh said. "We will be off."

Epineh indicated for her party and the noble's guards to follow her.

The party and guards follow you out into the street "Your highness.." one of the guards starts "what will happen to us now?"

"You're free to go if you want," Epineh said. "I'd look to be joining the guard or something safer."

The two men looked at each other and then sank to one knee in front of Epineh "If you'd permit it, we would like to swear to your service. You've treated us only with respect and kindness. That is something we've not come to expect from our leaders"

"Certainly, show up at where the royal family is staying and I'll put in a good word for you," Epineh said.

The guards nod and the depart, leaving Epineh with Bethnay Alisha.

"That was an adventure and a half," Epineh said.

"It was" Bethnay said "I've not had much chance to get out of the library. That was an experience for me"

Alisha smiled grimly "We also need to consider how we go forward.. The Duke is getting more brazen in his attempts"

"He is yes, with any luck the noble will turn on him to try and save his own hide," Epineh said.

Lady Alisha nods "We can but hope. Shall we return to the residence?" she suggested.

"Let's make sure Bethany gets back safely first," Epineh said.

Lady Alisha nods "Of course your highness" she said. Bethany squeaks "I should be fine, if you have more important things to do"

"It's no trouble," Epineh said, smiling.

The small group makes good time getting back to the Library and the mages that call it home. Bethany's father greeted the group as it arrives "Welcome back. I am guessing from your expressions you were successful in recoveringhe book?" he asked.

"We were, yes," Epineh said. "Your daughter was quite the help."

The mage smiles "I'm glad to hear it" he said "If I maybe so bold, would you consider making her part of your entourage? I think she could do with the experience, and I think she may be useful to you too"

"If she's willing, certainly," Epineh said, looking over at her.

Bethany looks shocked for a long moment and then eventually squeaks out " I'd be honoured to"

"Welcome aboard," Epineh said.

Bethany smiles "I'll do my best to help you in anyway possible" she said.

"Thank you," Epineh said. "Let's head back now."

Your expanded group returns to the mansion your family is staying at and everything seems peaceful especially after the days adventures.

"At least we can get a bit of relaxation now," Epineh said.

Lady Alisha nods "That will be most welcome" she said "Especially as the Tournament will start soon, and you need to look your best for it"

"Don't remind me," Epineh said and sighed.

Bethany looked a a bit confused at the exchange "Are you not looking forward to the tournament?" She asked hesitantly.

"I'm not looking forward to marrying someone I don't know. To be honest. I just don't have a choice," Epineh said.

Bethany looked embarrassed "I didn't think about that.. I suppose most people haven't.  They are too caught up in the excitement" she said

"To be fair, I do have to put on a good face for it in public," Epineh said.

Lady Alisha then speaks up "Shall we get some baths drawn? I don't know about you.  But I'd love to get clean after that trip through the sewer"

"Yes, though hopefully less exciting this time," Epineh said.

Lady Alisha laughed slightly "I think we can be safe enough this time" she said and asked a servant to start on making them ready.

"How about you tell us more about yourself," Epineh asked Bethany.

"Well I'm the daughter of Alric the head mage here" Bethany said "I've pretty much grown up surrounded by magic and books. I want to be a great mage and leader like my father. But well.. I'm clumsy and forgetful"

"Don't sell yourself short," Epineh said. "You were quite useful."

" I'll keep trying to improve" Bethany said "I have a goal and I'll teach it"

"You do have a sponsor now," Epineh said.

"Thank you your highness" bethany said, just before the servant returned to report the baths had been heated.

"Ah, I have been looking forward to this," Epineh said.

The servant leads you into a room with several bathtubs in, three of which are gently steaming. "It is most welcome" Lady Alisha said quickly stripping before sinking into one of the baths.

Epineh followed suit.

Betany takes the last bath "This is nice" she agreed sinking into the water.

"It really is," Epineh said.

The group is able to enjoy the warmth of the baths for a while before Alisha speaks up "Should we inform your father about todays events? " She asked.

"Yes, but at least we're more presentable now," Epineh said.

"That is true, I'm not sure how your father would react to you arriving covered in spider bits and emerging like a sewer" Alisha said.

"Yes," Epineh said. "But we're good now. So, I have a question: have either of you been courted before?"

Bethany squeaked and sank lower in her bath "No..."

Alisha on the other hand chuckled "I've had some experience " she said "you'd be surprised how many people find a Lady Knight rather dashing"

"Ah, well, um, I haven't and given where I'm headed...," Epineh said.

Alisha shifted in the bath and drew her knees up considering how to reply "Well, it's not quite the same. But the best advice I can give is to make or find a connection.  Something that you can share with your partner" she said "For example.." and she began to relate the story of a young man's attempts to woo her"

Epineh nodded as she listened intently.

"And that was how it happened" Alisha finished her tale "It was a fun time, but we ended up posted to different areas of the kingdom"

Epineh was sitting there wide-eyed.

Lady Alisha chuckled at Epinehs expression "I think I might have broken our princess" she said to Bethany who seemed much in the same state.

"Oh my," Epineh said.

"I hope that meet help a little Epineh. Hopefully your chosen champion will win for you" Alisha said "You can probably find something to do together in your spare time"

Epineh turned several shades of red.

Alisha seemed amused by the reaction "Just teasing a bit" she said.

"W-what, no matter who wins, I'd have to...," Epineh said.

Alisha sighed and nodded "So we will just have to pay the right man wins"

Epineh just sank deeper into the water.

Alisha stood and got out of the bath wrapping a towel around herself, before calling a servant and ordering fresh clothes for you all.

Epineh slowly got out and dried herself as well.

The servant quickly came back with a clean set of clothes for each of you.  Bethany looked a bit startled as she examined the clothes "These are really nice, are you sure it's okay for me to have them? " She asked.

"Of course," Epineh said as she dressed.

Alisha and Bethany also quickly dress.

"Now to see father," Epineh said.

Lady Alisha bowed "As you wish your princess" and your group heads to the apartments your parents keep, the guard outside after checking ushers you in and you find your father looking older than you've seen him before sitting at a table stacked with documents.

"father?" Epineh asked.

"Good evening my dear" he replied "Sorry, a lot of paperwork to get through. I believe the guard said you had something you needed to discuss urgently?"

"I thought we should inform you about what has happened today," Epineh said as she explained what happened.

The kings face become more drawn as the explanation goes on "This is getting worse and worse, do we have any clue as to who the wizard and noble were working for?" he asked.

"No, father," Epineh said.

He sighed "Then we must increase the security as much as we can. I shall ask some of the loyalist nobles to provide my guards" he said " I also think that we should remain here in the mansion until the tournament"

"As you wish, father," Epineh said.

"It won't be for long" Epinehs father said "this will all be over soon"

"Anything I can do for you?" Epineh asked.

He smiled sadly "You've done more than enough already, more than I should ever of asked of you. Just continue to watch out for our people, and in time find a way to forgive a foolish old man"

"Of course, father," Epineh said.

He smiled and gave Epineh a hug and then returned to his desk "Sadly I have a lot of work to do" he gestured to the pile of paper work "A rulers work is never truly done"

"I will see you later then," Epineh said, bowing and leaving the room.

"Your father seems... worried about something" Bethany ventured as the group walks towards their quarters.

"He usually is," Epineh said.

Bethany blushed "I suppose you are right he probably does being king and all"

"He has been under a lot of pressure from the nobles to have the games," Epineh said.

Lady Alisha makes a small motion to Bethany "I'll show you the quarters we've prepared Bethany. We can make sure they are to your liking" she said.

The elf looked between Alisha and Epineh and then nodded " Oh yes, that would be good." She said quickly.

"Is something wrong?" Epineh asked.

"Not at all Epineh" Lady Alisha replied "I just thought it would be wise to get Bethany settled in"

"Ah, very well then," "Epineh said.

The other two women wish you a good night and head off towards their rooms,  when Epineh enters her room she finds her bed anyway prepared for her.

Epineh gets ready for bed and gets in.

The night passes with Epineh plagued with bad dreams no doubt related to recent events and her worries for the future.

Morning comes and her sleep is disturbed by banging at her door! "Sister! Sis! get up!" a familiar young voice calls between knocks at the door.

Epineh got up and headed for the door, rubbing her eyes.

Your little brother was standing at the door "Father said I can't go into the town, and I have no lessons today,  so I'm bored.  Play with me would you" He said in a rush.

Epineh pretend to consider it.

"I suppose..."

Ellias beamed at Epineh "Thanks" he said giving an impulsive hug.  " I'll wait for you in the dining hall then"

Epineh got ready before heading there.

Ellias was sitting at a table with a large plate of food, he always seemed to be eating recently,  probably going through another growth spurt. "You should eat,  its really good" he said in a way of getting. "But you should get your own,  I'm hungry"

Epineh did as suggested.

The cooks were more than happy to supply Epineh with a breakfast and soon a plate of food was delivered.

" Do you know why we're not allowed out? " Ellias asked "Mom and Dad wouldn't tell me,  just said it was too keep us safe"

"That is why," Epineh said. "Someone had monsters attack us."

Ellias eyes go wide "Did you see the monsters?" He asked an expression somewhere between awe and horror on his face.

"I did, yes," Epineh said. "But I dealt with them and some help from certain bodyguards..."

Ellias eyes light up "Really, I knew you would beat them up.  I wish I was there,  I'd take my sword and.." he mimed some slashes.

"I'm sure you'll kill plenty when you're older," Epineh said.

Ellias beamed at the compliment "Were you scared?" He then asked.

"A bit, but they had to be dealt with," Epineh said.

Ellias nodded and returned his attention to his food and quickly demolished it "So what should we pay?  Hide and seek? He asked.

"Whatever you want," Epineh said.

Ellias thought for a moment "Hide and seek then.. I'll hide first but no using magic to find me" he said.

"I promise, no magic," Epineh said as she covered her eyes.

You here the pitter-patter of rushing feet as Ellias runs off to hide.

Epineh counts to fifty before going to find him.

Epineh starts looking checking a few obvious places but not finding Ellias who seems to be taking the game seriously.
