0) RTJ Information

Thank you for your interest in the Raiders of the Caribbean Game!

The game is set in 1671 in the middle of the Caribbean, where European powers are engaged in territorial disputes and trade wars. It is therefore important to choose a nationality, and perhaps a starting port where you’ve chosen to settle in the Caribbean.

The rules are loosely based on Z-Man Games' Merchant and Maurauders Board Game.

If you are serious about joining, please submit the following information in your RTJ:

1. Character Name, Ship Name and NPC names: you’re the captain of your own vessel, it goes without saying that you’re not shouting orders to yourself as you set sail for glory. I want your character’s name, as well as the name of your 1st mate. You can give me a 2nd NPC, as long as your background supports it. NPCs should hold a recurring role in your story writing, and might be used by myself to send you details / plot twists.

2. Nationality: I’ll allow any nationality that you want, provided that it can be found in 1671. That means, no: you can’t play an American or Canadian corsair, but I would allow French, English, Portuguese, Spanish, etc, including their colonial holdings.

3. Background: I want some history about how you found yourself in the Caribbean, as well as your motivations as a captain. Do you have a young family to feed? Do you have a grudge against a certain naval officer? Are you angry at the world, and would rather see it burn? If you dream of heading your own trade empire, or if you’ve got a grudge against a certain nationality, this is where I want to know about it.

4. Solo or Co-op: this is mainly a creative writing role-playing game, but I want to know if you prefer bouncing off your ideas against someone else or if you'd rather only get prompts that you react to. In a solo game, I will interact with you strictly with respect to the game mechanics (dice throwing, telling you about the outcomes, loot you can grab, etc. Meanwhile, if you prefer a coop-writing, I will occasionally use your NPCs and add my own twists to bounce your writing off of.

Regardless of your choice, I will not be adding things into your inventory that you make up for yourself. For example, you might refer to shooting 20 guns at the enemy, or that your crew of two hundred, or that you suddenly have an enchanted sword. At the end of the day... the game mechanics will limit the amount of dice you will throw, and the type of gear you will end up having.. otherwise, have fun..! :D

5. Posting Rate: How often can you post? While this is a Solo game, there are other players shaping events around you. I typically give players a whole week (minimum) before ending a turn; however, some of the options you have might require some dice rolls and some input from me / other players (if a PvP situation arises), in which case it might be good to post more than once a week.

Which is why that I need you to commit to regular weekly check-ins, and that if your availability starts waning, I request that you let me know. Instead of having you sitting in the middle of the sea with your gun ports still battered down, I will return you to your home port until you are ready to set sail once again.

One will extend your character's chance at a longer and more successful career...

6. Mature Themes: You acknowledge that this is a game set in the 17th century Caribbean, which is a violent and ill-reputed time in our history where acts of savagery have been committed, drug and alcohol abuse was rampant, and placing a bounty on someone's head was commonplace. As such, you understand that I must apply the following rules from RPoL's Mature Games Policy:

Mature Policy: /help/?t=faqs&page=maturepolicy
Adult & Mature Games FAQ: /help/?t=faqs&page=adultfaq

CONFIRMATION: (in writing) that you understand the difference between RPoL's Policy on Mature vs Adult Content, and that you agree to abide by those policies in keeping your posts to the more Mature & General audience.
