The owner of the local inn had asked you to deal with the rats in the basement. The old floor broke as you stepped on it, dropping you into a small cave system. It turned out to be where, centuries in the past, a wizard had used it as a research lab. There you had fought some skeletons, found a magic sword with "In case of emergency" written on it and a weird spider in a magic circle. It had tried to get you to break it, but well, you weren't going to trust a random talking spider. It was an imp that you dealt with. Then you managed to get out and the innkeeper paid you more for the trouble and free ale.

Althan sat at the table and drank his bear scratching at the base of his horns, it had been an odd day to put it mildly, he looked again at the magic sword and the odd inscription on the sword "It's got to a joke right?" He said as he traced the inscription with a finger.

"There you are, Althan!" a voice you recognize as Amara (your childhood friend) said.

"Oh hi Amara.. funny story you see" Althan said as he turned to look at them.

"I need your help to find grandma's armour, remember?" she said.

"Oh right sorry" Althan said "The rat hunt took an unexpected turn, turns out there is a whole network of tunnels down there"

"What? Really?" Amara asked.

"Yeah, found this" Althan held up the sword "along with some critters and a dodgy talking spider"

"Aw, and I missed it," Amara said, pulling up a chair.

"There be plenty of adventures ahead" Althan replied "So where are we looking for the armour?"

"The storage shed," Amara said. "You know the one. The dreaded one."

Althan chuckled "Right, well ready when you are then"

You head back to the small, strange apartment building that Amara's family owned. It was three storeys tall and had a small fenced backyard. In that fenced yard was THE storage shed. The yard had a lot of scrap iron all over it, with a small path leading to the door of the shed.

Althan led the way towards the shed "So why do you have all this scrap iron laying about anyway?"

"I don't know. My dad just won't get rid of it," Amara said.

"Oh right fair then" said Althan as they arrived at the shed and went to open the door.

A large pile of items fall out. There is more stuff inside/

"Woah" Althan yelped as he jumped back from the sudden avalanche "This might take away, what did the armour look like again?"

"It was leather," Amara said.

Althan grunts in reply and tries to push his way into the shed looking for leather armour.

After a couple of hours, the armour was found.

"Thank the gods," Amara said.

"That was harder than I expected. Didn't realise your family kept so much stuff down here" Althan said as he helped put everything back in the shed.

"Dad doesn't like getting rid of things," Amara said.

Althan laughed "Maybe next time he can do the searching" he suggested "So what's next?"

"We just need to buy some last bits of gear and then we'll be ready to head out," Amara said. "Mostly just some of those weird rations adventurers live on."

Althan nodded  "Dried meat, dried fruit and hardtack" he agreed "I guess the general store would be our best bet"

"Yep! Then we can leave our tiny village behind!" Amara said.

"That's the plan" Althan said "Going to be good to see the outside world"

The two of you head inside again, when something hit you. You know that you were the hero.

Althan stops in his tracks as memories and feelings suddenly crashed down on him, he shakes his head trying to clear it and regain his focus.

"You alright there, big guy?" Amara asked.

Althan nodded slowly  "Yeah, I'm fine. Just excited I guess" he said not wanting to explain just yet.

Soon enough the two of you were at the general store. Amara began looking over the various rations they had.

Althan examined the rations half heartedly "Where did you want to head for first?" He asked after a moment seeking a distraction.

"Dunwood is probably best. I hear they have an adventurer's guild," Amara said.

"That works for me" Althan agreed "we can get get guild licences then"

"This is so exciting," Amara said as she bought several bits of rations. "Make sure you're up early tomorrow."

Althan nodded "You too, wouldn't want you to sleep in and miss the start of the journey"

"Hey, whose the one that would wake you up?" Amara asked. "Don't try and turn things around."

Althan waved the comment off minor details, he said as they headed back. "Well guess I'd better make sure I'm packed. Wouldn't want to look foolish when we meet the demon lord"

"Sure thing! See ya tomorrow!" Amara said as she headed back home.

Althan headed back to his place his mother must of still been working at the Inn. He went up to his room, and rechecked his bags before laying down his mind full of memories that were his own, but yet not his own.

Your sleep is filled with dreams of adventures past, perhaps even of those of adventures yet to come.

Althan awakens early for once and yawning he slowly he gets up and makes ready before heading to meet Amara.

No one else was up at this hour.

Althan grabbed some breakfast and left a note for his mother, before heading out the meeting spot they had decided on.

Amara was waiting for you.

"Took you long enough," she said and then stuck her tongue out at you.

"Wanted a good breakfast before we started" Althan said "Ready then?"

"Yep! But that's why you get up even earlier," Amara said.

Althan grumbled something about tyrant and wannabe Demon Queen under his breath as they started out.

Amara stopped at the gates to the village and turned around to look back at it one last time.

Althan wondered when he'd see the place again, his memories as the Hero suggested it might not happen "I'm going to miss the place... I think, its home after all" he finally commented.

"Yeah, but not where we're meant to stay," Amara said, before turning around and heading down the road.
