Issue 2: Back at school!

Pharrolax restrained herself, looking over the whole classroom. It was sometimes easy to forget that Pharrolax was an actual god with incredible, otherworldly powers at her disposal. Today, it was not--everybody in the room could feel it.

"Dismissed."

And then, on cue as always, Professor Positron hovered in through the hole.

"Come now, students. It is time for your science class."

Without another word, the technopath floated back out of the classroom, leading the students very suddenly away from Berman's classroom.

OOC: So, at the end of this issue following the final class of the day, I'll have y'all do three things.

1.) Stars + wishes, idk stars fun u know what i mean?

2.) Take two end of session moves.

3.) Pick your mentor for the year. Keep in mind that you should be committing to one of two paths with this decision: either you're a tech-based or a magic-based superhero. If drastic events happen, you may find yourself in another path down the line, but that switch should be a massive thing.

Don't forget to check the discord for PROFESSOR POSITRON.

Hunter stands up to move to his next class, before he leaves, he looks back at Piper. After meeting his gaze for a moment, he gives him a small, affirming nod. Turning and walking away, he can't help but let out a small chuckle.

"Detention..." He thinks to himself. "Not how I imagined this day would go... who knows? Could be good for us."

"Ms. Hay will have questions, no doubt."

OOC: NO FORMATTING I'M RUSHING THIS UPDATE!!!

Professor Positron took a brisk pace, calling roll as he moved. Anyone who followed at less than a brisk pace would find themselves missing roll call, so all chatter would have to wait at least until after his roll call.

Positron took the students through the halls, coming to a bend in the path that would lead to the labs. Unusually for any school setting, Positron had constructed for the underclassmen (freshmen and sophomores) a great laboratory covering as many subjects as possible. Here, the students worked on their own projects most of the time.

"Students, you will work on your individual projects for the first thirty minutes of class today. In the remaining twenty minutes, we will have a guest lecture from our suprology instructor."

Positron floated into the air, overseeing everybody for the start of class.

OOC: Alright folks...what are your science class experiments?! :)

They can be big or small, smart or dumb. As long as they challenge your character, Positron is happy.

Sage's original project was a rotating elemental dispenser, but apparently they don’t keep incomplete 40 year old school projects around so all that work has been scrapped.

That doesn’t matter now however, as he wants something a little more timely. Finding a budding interest in programming Sage is trying to make a research bot that searches the web for useful info, sources, and people. This would hopefully make research and homework easier. It’s going…ok for now…let’s just say she often has quite a few questions for the professor.

Sitting down, Trouble begins to work on her little mechanical hummingbird. She's trying to justify how scientific it is, balancing the engineering part of it with getting the metal parts to flap fast enough to get the bird in the air and as fast as an actual hummingbird but ... if she was honest she just thought they were really pretty.

Listen: Imp loves animals.

Imp loves bugs more than anything.

Therefore, Imp’s experiment involves her trying to learn how to replicate ant pheromones with her bodily mutation and communicate to them to do certain tasks.

The main way it challenges her is that she can’t just brute force this like with other things- the project forces her to actually slow down, be calm, and most of all, have patience.

Piper is in a corner table armed with a pool cue. All of his rats are on the table and he’s using the pin cue to play some sort of unintelligible game with his rats. If an on looker tried to understand it seems like a strange mix of tag and billiards. Right now Skidds is “it” and being smacked like a white ball in a game of pool. If asked about his experiment he simply shrugs and says

Over the course of the half-hour, Professor Positron checked in on every single ongoing experiment.

Sage

Positron stood over Sage's shoulder, smiling at the fledgling program.

"Sage, have you given thought to how you will tailor your deep-web search algorithm? As I understand it, the internet of the current day has much in the way of nonsense data."

OOC: I'm just saying, you could transition into The Brain and have a Shame off the back of this, you know?

***

Hunter

Positron stood over Hunter's shoulder, smiling at the fledgling motor.

"Hunter, have you given thought to the possibility of the motor responding to your own electrical powers, generating more mechanical power off of the ambient energy released by your body?"

***

Trouble

Positron stood over Trouble's shoulder, smiling at the fledgling automaton.

"Trouble, have you given thought to whether or not you will develop an artificial intelligence for the hummingbird?"

***

Imp

Positron stood over Imp's shoulder, smiling at the fledgling ant army.

"Imp, have you given thought to speaking with the Antediluvian, our suprology instructor, about this?"

***

Piper

Positron did not smile at Piper's experiment. After some time watching the game, he simply said this:

"If you continue to flounder your talents, you will continue to disappoint not only those who wish for your success, but, above all else, you will disappoint yourself. Next class, you should begin to work on a real experiment."

Issue 2: Back at school!

The rest of the work period progressed without incident, students working (or not working) as the mood struck them. Some students were quite industrious, while others were quite slow in their efforts. All the while, Professor Positron kept on examining the work of each student eagerly.

At the end of the half hour, the temperature went down slightly, and Professor Positron stepped into the front of the classroom, to a whiteboard against the wall.

"Students, please set your projects away for now. Our suprology instructor, the Antediluvian, a most distinguished member of the super-powered community."

A hush went through the room as a man stepped in through the doorway, clothed in a long double-breasted dark blue coat, with a rather aristocratic red ascot, patterned high-waisted trousers, and fine Oxford shoes. His brow, upper jaw, and nose were all highly prominent features in his face, reflecting his supposed neanderthal background, and his dark, piercing eyes burned underneath two bushy eyebrows. His hand went up to his well-groomed beard, stroking the hairs on his chin as he looked over the room. His face, however, was disfigured, bearing serious scars under one eye leading down into the cheek.

He cut a powerful figure, and looked at each student with genuine curiosity, although many found his attention to be intimidating enough.

Several moments later, a power-point presentation went up on a screen over the whiteboard. The Antediluvian began clicking through images of several great super-heroes.

"That which we call powers does not constitute one category, students. There are, of course, many sources of power, none of them commensurate. For instance, one can receive power by various kinds of study..."

An image of Sister Salem and her husband, the Infi-Knight, went up on the screen. Both of them received their most important abilities through arcane or scientific and technological study.

"...or by meditation."

An image of the Green Tornado went up, a hero who famously earned his powers by achieving a state of inner serenity while inside the eye of a hurricane--thereby gaining the ability to end the hurricane.

"By biological advantage or genetic mutation."

Two heroes flashed on the screen, first Paragon, a hero born on another world, and then Firefly, a hero born on Earth with the ability to produce and control flame.

"Experimentation, curses, and even trauma can cause the development of powers."

First, an image of the monumental ape, Kongotron, went up on the screen. Then, an image of the legendary hero, the Astral Stranger. Finally, an image of Turbo-Boost, a former villain who developed the ability to move at incredible speeds after waking from a coma caused by a traumatic brain injury.

"And let me be the first to tell you, there's no shame in how you gain powers, in what effect they have on your body. To be changed is no reflection on your fundamental dignity."

He scanned the room before continuing his lecture, looking for something--though nobody could rightly guess what.

OOC: In your responses, please describe specifically how you react to this opinion from the Antediluvian.

As he spoke, the classroom would become gradually aware of the pitter-patter of rain drops hitting the roof and windows around the building, the sound of wind moving around outside.

"So, if so many things can cause super powers to develop, if indeed most powers differ in their fundamental nature from other powers, the question is this: what is suprology, the study of super powers?"

He paced to the other side of the whiteboard before speaking again.

"It is, simply put, the study of all abilities far outside the norm. The study of not only Carbine's hand-eye coordination, but Paragon's flight, the Jabberwocky's mystic dream power, Sister Salem's occult knowledge--even the apparent connection of Panthalassa the Sea-Sovereign or Inferna to the so-called 'god-nature' which is the source of their divine power. At the very same time, it is the study of the history of powered individuals, their lives and the historical conditions they found themselves in."

He stroked his beard.

"There are several key factors which we study before all else. First is origin, that is, the source of power. For myself, a suprologist would say I have more than one source for my abilities. In the time that I first lived more than sixty-five thousand years ago, I was killed by the fall of a meteor to the earth. Yet, the cosmic rays which that meteor gave off revived me, granting me immortality, strength, speed, and heightened intelligence. More importantly, I developed a mystical connection..."

The rain very suddenly stopped, and the wind stood still.

"...to the weather. I have since gained thousands of years of combat knowledge, as well as deep knowledge of both occult practice and scientific method--although, as a powered individual I have a particular preference for the arcane arts."

After a moment, he continued again, the rain beginning its pitter-patter anew.

"The next aspect is scope. Many powers are limited to the self, while others affect the world around the user. Some, in fact, have a grand scale. I have, for instance, gathered a storm spanning the Atlantic Sea. Another aspect is control. Although I was able to gather that storm, I was incapable of controlling the minute physics of the storm. I could not, for instance, direct a single lightning bolt to strike, although I could create the atmospheric conditions for lightning."

He put a finger to his chin as if he was thinking of an inside joke.

"Another aspect we suprologists look at is limitation. No power is unlimited. My ability to control the weather, for instance, is limited to weather here on the planet Earth. Nothing I could do will change that solid fact. There is much more to suprology than I have been able to impart here, but let me warn you: powers can be a difficult thing to get a grasp on. You may be under a misapprehension about the source of your own powers, as I once was. When I first awoke and for thousands of years after, I believed that I had been cursed by a great spirit of the sky."

He turned the power-point presentation off.

"You will also need to constantly reevaluate the various parameters of your power. As you mature, your powers may change in nature, they may become more precise, you may lose strength or speed, or you may gain in all regards. You may lose your powers, temporarily or permanently, and you might even find yourself with new powers. So, I warn you all: in our world, things may not be what they seem. Your powers, furthermore, may hold secrets that will be difficult to understand. When a great alchemist in a time long past sought to use me to develop an elixir of immortality, what he really discovered was the Anti-Life Serum."

Now at the end of his lecture, the Antediluvian wiped at his brow with a handkerchief, dabbing away the little sweat which had collected on his forehead.

Momentarily, the class ended. As the students filtered out, Sage would be the first, and perhaps the only, student to notice that Hellbinder watched as their particular class let out. Every day, Hellbinder was present to observe the students leaving Sage's class in particular.

OOC: Once you've posted your reactions to the rest of the class period, mosey on down to the new End of Session thread to do the following:

1.) Stars + wishes

(Keep in mind that our next issue is going to be the evening's events, y'all getting the opportunity to hang out and have fun before detention in the morning.)

2.) Take two end of session moves.

3.) Declare your mentor, keeping in mind that this will set you on either the super-tech track or the arcane arts track! I think most of you already made your decisions, but you'll finalize these decisions there.

Hunter stood at attention when the Antediluvian entered, and listened intently to his lecture. Upon the mention of powers being acquired through trauma, he immediately became hyper-aware of the piece of metal lodged in his brain. It was odd, he couldn't actually feel it, of course. But he knew it was there, and instinctively he began raising a hand to the scar on his forehead, but quickly stopped himself.

He held the same opinion as the Antediluvian regarding one's fundamental dignity, even subtlety nodding as he spoke it. As class ended, he filtered out as everyone else did, thinking about the past few minutes as he did so.

Trouble shrinks on on herself at the mention of gaining your powers from experimentation and trauma. While she is not ashamed of how she got her powers, of how Imp got her powers, she did not like the reminder of it. It brought back painful memories. Sure, she had gained a friend, but she had lost so much more.

She misses most of what Antediluvian says after that, due to being lost in her head. But when she notices the rest of the class begins to get up and move along, she also gathers her things. She says nothing as she stays closer to Imp than usual, wings flittering anxiously, heading towards the next class.

Sage does not like the suprology teacher he doesn't hate him per say, just doesn't like him, but…
She did have to give it to him; this specific take wasn’t all too shitty.

Though,

“To be changed is no reflection on your fundamental dignity”

They did scoff internally at this remark a little, sure powers were no reflection on one's dignity nor how one acquired them, but changing into a villain kinda is…

If one was to look at their face in that moment it would seem upset,

Looking around at the others in the class it seemed as if some felt similarly to them though they would never bring it up, not at this exact moment at least.

As the class came to an end Sage, still saddened by their own thoughts, began to leave the room. Noticing Hellbinder, as usual she tried not to flinch and did her best to play it cool. She didn’t know why he was always there but it didn’t help ease their fears of the school in the slightest.

They hadn’t seemed to be able to piece together what interest he had in watching this class in particular. The running theory was that the Antediluvian had told him something about the class. Perhaps he was eyeing Hunter, he was a gifted student of sorts. Maybe he had an investment in keeping an eye on Piper or Imp. Hell, maybe even Hestia, she was pretty cool and mysterious at least to Sage that is.

All Sage knew was that it was pretty weird and probably had a reason.

“To be changed is no reflection on your fundamental dignity.”

That sentence sticks into Imp, in a way that isn’t quite familiar to her. She looks towards Hestia for a moment- her sister and confidante even after all of the torment their bodies had been through. They never would have met if not for their shared pain. Logically, Imp knew that she was seen as Hestia’s equal. Wasn’t she? Her sister always said so.

And yet.

“To be changed is no reflection on your fundamental dignity.”

The thought sits like a lump in Imp’s stomach. Part of her almost doesn’t believe it outright- she couldn’t even walk upright without struggling! For all intents and purposes, her dignity in society was forfeit in her mind! Not a day went by that didn’t feel like a reminder of everything Imp wasn’t anymore! Arizella’s stint this morning was proof enough of that! Not even to mention certain other folks… Yet, here was living proof standing in front of her that maybe this didn’t have to be the case. The antediluvian barely gave his form a second thought. Imp subconsciously runs her clawed hands over her horns.

“To be changed is no reflection on your fundamental dignity.”

Maybe… maybe he had a point. Imp can’t quite help but pay attention to the rest of the lecture, feeling less like she was being “talked at” and more like things were being explained to her. Even as they leave the class, she seems lost in thought over the antediluvian’s words.

OOC: thank you all for your patience! I’m dying inside!
