Meira looked inquisitively at the goblin. "Well, there's always work in the mud kilns if you're not fussy. They'll take just about anyone. Take the bridge over the river and ask for Tal." She gave Frack a skeptical look regarding his second request. "Golden goose? Seriously? A goose that's golden? Sounds like a fairy tale to me, but if there is such a thing around here, Modred probably knows about it. He lives in the tower."

She picked up the silver and headed for the kitchen.

As Frack and Thelonius waited for their food, a familiar face entered the tavern. Eveline Pendergraas, the merchant who helped Frack journey to Tukoa (or at least very near to it), walked through the doorway. She scanned the room, then headed to a table where two scruffy men sat. She nodded to Frack absently as she walked by, but her focus was clearly upon the two men already seated.

Frack and Thelonius watched as Eveline seated herself between the two men at the table. As she did, the taller of the two reached under the table and place a small cage, covered by a dirty cloth, on the table in front of the merchant. He removed the cover with a flourish, revealing a bright red bird inside.

Eveline's eyes brightened and she smiled. At the same time, the bird flapped its wings in what appeared to be a protest of its surroundings.

"There he is, miss. Just like we said. The red bird you been lookin' for."

"Been lookin' for," the second man added.

"So it looks," Frack agreed. "I guess that's good news for the bird. She's a lot friendlier than those two look."

Although the tavern was not crowded, the conversation between Eveline and the two men was barely audible to Thelonius, who sat facing in their general direction. Frack, in spite of his larger ears, was positioned such that he could hear even less.

"Ooooh," Eveline cooed appreciatively. "What a beautiful animal. He's gorgeous!"

"He yours," the first man replied grinning widely. "With the agreed upon payment."

"Yours with the payment." the second man repeated.

Thelonius saw Eveline hesitate for a split second as if trying to decide whether the agreed upon price was to her liking. But the moment passed and she reached into her coat, producing a small pouch. She opened it to double check the contents, then slid it across the table. "As agreed."

The first man smiled broadly when Eveline handed him the pouch, glancing inside before pulling the drawstring tight again, chuckling. "Pleasure doing business with you," he said.

"Pleasure doing business with you," his partner added.

Eveline covered the cage and headed toward the door. As she passed Frack and Thelonius, she nodded to the goblin, giving him a stiff smile without stopping.

Frack watched as Eveline passed with the covered cage in hand. Behind that thin sheet, he could hear the bird's wings fluttering madly. He sensed something was amiss, but he wasn't sure what. Unsure of what to do, he threw a concerned look to Thelonius.

Like Frack, Thelonius had an uneasy feeling about the transaction he just witnessed. He knew little about Ms. Pendergrass, but he sensed nothing dubious about her. Still, her awkward departure sounded an alarm as great as the seven gongs surrounding the monastery.

Seeing Frack, he finally uttered what they were both thinking. "Something is wrong here."

Frack rose to his feet. Well, more exactly, he slid off his chair and scurried after Eveline. Once outside, he looked for the lady merchant in hopes of catching up to her.

Before Frack could reach the door, the two men whom Eveline had just dealt took exception to Frack's pending departure. "Hold it right there," called the first man as he rose to his feet. "Where do you think you're going?"

"Where do you think you're going?" parroted the second man as he chased after Frack.

OOC: Frack is closer to the door than the pursuing man, so could exit without issue (except for a man telling him to stop).

Sensing the man coming after Frack, Thelonious slid out of his seat just in front of the man, hoping to block his way. "Excuse me," he apologized. "A thousand pardons."

After running into Thelonius, the parrot tried to lower his shoulder into the monk, but made no headway. He grunted under his breath, then threw a panicked glace back as his partner who was approaching with a disgruntled look on his face. "Watch it, you bald bumbling oaf!"

The parrot was so perturbed, he had trouble speaking. "B-bald. Bald. Bumbling."

OOC: The pair have been successfully stalled by Thelonius.

Having quickly followed, Frack spotted Eveline proceeding up the street. To his surprise, however, she wasn't headed toward the inn, but in the opposite direction.

Frack started after Eveline, but then thought the best way to figure out where she was going was to follow at a safe distance. He held up, then, hoping to go after her undetected. His chainmail, however, made more noise than he hoped.

Eveline peered over her shoulder, quickly spotting the goblin. She stopped and sighed. "Frack, are you following me?"

Frack froze in place, hoping to not be seen, but the fact that Eveline was staring straight at him hinted to the goblin that he had been spotted. His face flushed, which for a goblin was an ugly brown hue. "Uh... hello Eveline," he finally spat out, still frozen in place. "I... uh... where you going?"

The scene teetered on a razor's edge for just a moment before Eveline smiled back at the goblin. "Frack, I am going to see a friend of mine. I wanted to show him this lovely bird." Frack could hear the restless flapping of wings beneath the cover on the cage. "Oh dear. Little guy isn't very happy with all this, is he?"

After a peek under the flap, she glanced back to Frack. "Would you like to join me? I don't suppose my friend would mind one more place to set."

Frack looked over his shoulder for a sign of Thelonius, but didn't see him. The invitation from Eveline surprised him. He hadn't much experience in being invited to things, so he stood momentarily with his mouth open. Finally, realizing that the bird-toting merchant was waiting for his reply, he was able to answer. "Uhhh... yes. Yes! Yes, Frack will join you... if it won't be too much trouble, that is."

"Of course I don't mind, Frack. Come along." And with that, Eveline headed up the street briskly.

Frack hustled after the merchant, keeping an eye on the caged bird as it occasionally fluttered in its enclosure. "So where are we going?"

"We're going to see my good friend Willis. Willis Redmane. He lives out here." Eveline continued west to the edge of town, then proceeded into the woods. Frack felt a chill as he followed Eveline into the shade of the thick trees. Almost immediately the sunlight was mostly obscured. He felt like the woods was ancient, but at the same time, the trees while plentiful, were small, as if only present for a couple of decades at most. It was a confusing contradiction.

There was no clear trail, but Eveline was confident in her path, turning first left, then right, then left again over a rise. After 15 or so minutes, they arrived at a small shack surrounded by more trees.

"Here we are," she said with a smile. "Now let's see if she's home." She rapped five sharp knocks on the door.
