[OOC] Idle Chatter (Chat)

Thx much and hi all!

Here's the little snip of backstory I put together for Beck, which would all be public knowledge.  Certainly she and Lt Norn would have been acquainted, as officers held over from the ship's previous staff?
quote:
It's been an eventful year for Rebecca Byrne.

Up until Wolf 359 things had been going great, Beck loved her job and loved Starfleet and loved its mission; she had breezed upward through the ranks collecting commendations as she went, until she found herself stationed at the tactical console of the USS Melbourne when the Borg attacked at Wolf 359.  She was at her post when the ship was sliced to ribbons and started coming apart around her, and although she barely even remembers what happened between then and waking up in a starbase medbay, she was told she'd saved eleven crew members' lives during the emergency evacuation and earned herself a promotion to Lieutenant Commander and a post as the chief tactical officer of the USS Phoenix.

Soon after, on board the Phoenix, the events of the episode "The Wounded" were not nearly so straightforward and unanimous as Captain Maxwell had described when he explained himself to Picard on the Enterprise.  Several of the ship's officers had strongly objected to Maxwell's actions, and refused to fire on the Cardassians.  Beck was the most senior of them, and therefore she spent the events of that episode in the Phoenix's brig.  She was still there when the ship finally returned to Starbase 211, and once Starfleet had sorted out the whole affair they told her she'd earned another promotion, this time to the rank of Commander and the post of First Officer of the Phoenix.

Yep, that's the race of insufferable gits. Norn's a bit younger though.

Since we've only seen two Zakdorn on screen, and Sirin is probably 20 years younger than either of them, I don't expect I'll find a halfway decent picture unless they show up on the lower decks at some point.

Byrne and Norn would certainly know each other, as he headed up damage control and made a lot f engineering suggestions to his department head.

Re: [OOC] Idle Chatter (Chat)

In reply to Lieutenant(jg) Sirin Norn (msg # 36):

Ahhh.. I see.

I normally run games where events occur in a single thread; which does cause some narratives (especially conversations between players) to be broken up a bit in terms of continuity, but keeps events that occur close in time all in one place.

I've seen games run where different threads represent a specific location; this provides some continuity for narratives and allows for multiple stories to happen concurrently in different locations, but then the overall story ends up being chopped up across many disjointed threads.

I'm open to either... whichever the majority of PCs would like to see, I'll set it up!

Questions to the crew to set up hooks for the first mission(s) - Put responses in a private line in this thread please - I'll try and work your ideas into the story's first couple of episodes...

Captain: What orders did you get from Starfleet?

First Officer: What is the state of the crew following the last mission (Maxwell's treasonous attacks on the Cardassians)?

Science Officer: There is a cosmic phenomenon in your destination sector, what is it?

Operations Officer: There is a hazard to ship operations in the destination sector, what is it?

Tactical Officer: There have been reports of a hostile force in this sector. What is the threat?

Medical Officer: What viruses, bacteria or alien diseases threaten the crew?

Chief Engineer: Systems integration is tricky business, what lingering glitch is your department working on following the recent refit on the ship?

Re: [OOC] Idle Chatter (Chat)

Every way of organising threads has pluses and minuses.  Location-based threads can work well, if movement between threads is explicit (at both ends) and material that crosses threads is posted to all (not necessarily by copying posts).  I think it tends to work a bit better than everything in one thread.  Where I’ve seen narrative threads it’s been where characters are mostly pursuing their own stories with relatively little crossover.  Trek has good communications so there may be quite a bit of material shared between threads.

I think location-based threads may be the better choice here - partly because I think they’d cross over less than narrative based threads (unless there are explicit plots and it’s obvious which one a post belongs in).  But it’s not a strong preference.

I prefer a single thread. Yeah, it can get cluttered, but at least everything is contained, and nobody is separated when reading the...narrative.

It also states that there can be no other qualified officer for the position available.

Too bad that the XO had to drop out.  (We’ll miss you!)

Anyway, I think we need to address the issue of the cloaking device.  Canonically the Federation doesn’t have any and developing one would be a Treaty violation.  (Apparently using one is, too!)

I guess we can go against canon here, but I’d like that to be explicit.

Or is it borrowed from the Klingons, with  Kotar along to operate it and look after it? (That’s my preferred answer - even if using the cloak is still a bit dodgy at best)

Or some other explanation?  Section 31?

Giving the crew some time to react / discuss the cloaking device. No rush. I'll give it a week before pushing in some info about the first adventure.

If anyone isn't interested in that discussion, just post up somewhere on the ship and we can work along some solo stuff ... or let me know you are looking for a prompt and I'll have one together quickly.

Re: [OOC] Idle Chatter (Chat)

So, a brief about New and Improved (?) Rebbek Brynn. She's Trill, and served as Science Officer under the prior command of the Phoenix. She did attempt to lead resistance to the former captain, which ended with her former host critically wounded. Her return to the Phoenix is at a new rank and within a new host. So she's still learning and negotiating the relationship between Symbiote and Host.

For those that know a bit about her from her prior incarnation, Bek is an old school academic. Her former self had a habit of throwing dinner parties that had a reputation as both philosophical debating societies and- to many- impossibly pretentious. She's part of Star Fleet to explore ideas and pursue knowledge. Her former self had a reputation as aristocratic and somewhat stuck up, but most of the crew who knew her prior self has been court marshaled, so... They won't be getting invited to dinner.

Re: [OOC] Idle Chatter (Chat)

OK.. first few dice rolls have been made and gave a couple of options for PCs to respond to... fortunately these rolls have given us pretty standard results in the Powered by the Apocalypse system:

STRONG SUCCESS on 10+ ... things go exactly as you planned.

WEAK SUCCESS on 7-9 ... things generally work out, but the GM determines how.

FAIL on 6 or less ... no joy, TAKE 1XP and maybe a complication going forward.

Edge Bump on a roll of 6; I'll always offer to turn a fail into a weak success and on a roll of 9; I'll always offer to turn a weak success into a strong success... Edge is a limited resource but it will replenish periodically... when a PC has Hold it can be used this way too.

Feel free to ask any questions if you need to clarify something.

Re: [OOC] Idle Chatter (Chat)

Whew.... an eventful maiden voyage so far...

I've noticed something about the game and want to share my thoughts with the crew.

With any game / system every player needs to have something to do, but, on a Federation starship, every mission doesn’t involve heroic, crisis averting activity for all key members of the crew.

Consider a typical Star Trek episode, two or three senior officers are the focus of the show. At a few points during an episode, a couple others might swing by for a few lines of technobabble but then disappear again until they are the focus of a future episode.

That kind of formula works for TV but will kill a game like this... all in all, the ship's doctor doesn't have much to do 'on screen' while there is a visiting dignitary heading to an important diplomatic mission, the tactical officer is probably sitting out the important research into a unique nebula and the Captain can only order the chief engineer to re-calibrate the warp coils to prevent a breach so many times before it gets a bit old...

So to keep the game engaging for everyone, it will seem a bit frenetic from a wider ship-perspective; it sure has as we approach the first 500 posts in the game.  My advice: suspend disbelief, jump into plot lines you like, avoid those you don’t.

Have fun with it and feel free to send NPCs in your department off to do stuff you don’t want to play directly.

On a similar note - I'll be adding the concept of a "mission clock" in a thread that summarizes ongoing missions to help PCs understand how things are unfolding on main story arcs and hopefully show the way to resolution.

The story so far will also be summarized in the mission clock thread so you don't need to worry so much about missing a critical piece of information in a wayward post from last week.

Looking back, Kotar has 1 Hold from Perform a Scan, Iren has 1 Hold from Perform a Scan and Sirin should have been given at least 1 Hold for the Perform a Scan in the Shuttlebay.  On top of that, whoever rolls next to solve the worm problem gets +1 to the roll after Iren's Insgithful Analysis.

That's plenty to solve the immediate problem of secondary systems failing and cleaning up the remnants of the worm. Between the three of you, feel free to post how you work together to solve the problem.

Valéria’s conversation with Impela is indicative of a growing philosophical divide in the Federation. On one hand, there are those that believe the foundational principles of a democratic Federation must be upheld, even in the face of the Borg. On the other hand, there are those who have been so traumatized by the events at Wolf 359 that a ‘by any means necessary’ mentality is developing.

Oddly, those in open rebellion against the Federation for the appeasement policies toward the Cardassians fall in the former camp…

Should be a fun ride…

Looking at bumping the distress call forward a bit now that the immediate danger of system wide failures has been taken care of.

The Sabotage story line is still playing our with the Doctor investigating Ensign Yu's suspicious activities, Sirin repairing Mockingbird and Iren reverse engineering the worm to create a worm-hunting phage.

That leaves the Captain, Valeria and Kotar ready to play the bridge crew action for the distress call.  Our First officer has asked for a pause while she reconsiders playing the game, but I can take over that PC for now.

She asked for some time to reconsider and with my time table being a bit erratic recently, I'll leave things as they are for now.

Not sure if Sirin can go off to help with the worm given that there's a red alert going on. Would that be appropriate?

Re: [OOC] Idle Chatter (Chat)

Not really. We're at red alert and the Captain made the announcement to action stations. But she's likely be amenable to it if you asked and came right back when the shooting started (there's always shooting and screaming and dying).

Another rough week IRL and I'm working through the weekend.

Will try to catch up... feel free to put gum in each others hair and run with scissors if I can't be around to supervise!

"Captain, the ionometrian particles are interfering with both short and long range scanners. Might I suggest that we attempt to clear the field by creating a reverse tachyon pulse by inverting the distributor coils through the main deflector dish and then setting the frequency to random until we find the exact pitch to safely disable them?"

It takes a lot of juice to run a big sprawly game like this with multiple threads. Often more than the GM can keep up with. Then it becomes a chore and gets put off, and finally abandoned.

Seen it many times.

But it was fun to be a Klingon for a while.

^^ this...

Apologies for ghosting. I'm glad to see that a few of you found homes for your characters!

I'm gonna put a nail in this one and call it done. I was really hopeful for the game, but I think we all had a tough time getting onboard with the Strange New Worlds ruleset.

Live and learn.
