Re: OOC

If it is okay, I would like to use the Half-Umbral Dragon Template. Its breath weapon is weaker, but it is a unique type. And it gives a more unique immunity as well. But is otherwise basically the same as the Half-Dragon template. Besides, with Shapechange I can get most of the benefits of the standard dragon types anyway.

Player two, were you still hoping to use the half-celestial template? Because that one (or any of the others mentioned in this thread) are fine by me.

Re: OOC

Yes, half-celestial is my preference. I am also cool with the Half-Umbral Dragon...:-)

Re: OOC

Half-Umbral Dragon seems fine to me - and besides, Player 2 has ratified it!  Do you want me to develop some setting notes or wait for more PC development?  Do you each want to throw out a short (Fate-style) aspect for me to work into the starting world?

Re: OOC

Awesome!

So, here is what I have for a character concept thus far. Maybe it will help with your question, GM.

For the first half of my gestalt build, I have a fighter 20 (Eldritch Guardian archetype) that specializes in weapons from the Natural Weapons group.

The second half is a wizard 15 (Spellbinder archetype), and Archwizard 5 (Prestige Class).

He has the Half-Umbral Dragon template. Thematically, I am going to say that happened at level 15. He was born a half-elf, and you need to be an elf for the Spellbinder archetype. So when his type switched to dragon, he shifted to the Archwizard prestige class. The horrible umbral experiments conducted upon him to make him half dragon unlocked some strange new arcane insights during the process.

Unknown: my name, alignment, familiar type, other stuff.

That sounds awesome!

As for myself, I think we should nix the father/daughter thing and just go either besties forged in battle or a married couple. It takes me a bit to completely hammer down a concept 100%, but having Hero Lab helps me knock out characters pretty quickly once I finalize my ideas. At the moment, I know I'm going to be Stalker (Vigilante Archetype) on one side of the gestalt build and either Bard, Unchained Monk, Aegis, Soulknife, or some combination of those with varying possible Archetypes. I also have yet to think of a good name or alignment (most likely good since Half-Celestial). I'm going to be either a Half-Celestial Aasimar (love me some celestial blood) or a Half-Celestial Human. I'm not completely sure.

As for some Fate-Style World Aspects, I have a few for consideration, but by no means necessary to be included. More of food for thought...:-)

1. An Empire of Faded Light drowning in a Sea of Sweet Corruption.
2. The Citizens are Restless, both Living and Dead.
3. The Necromancer's Heart Beats Once More in the Vale of Sorrow.
4. The Weakening of Planar Boundaries Hastens the Prophesied End.

Re: OOC

I'm enjoying the world building - great aspects, Player 2 - and the characters coming together. So far, the concepts are solid, high-level ones.  I love that Player 1 is bucking the feeble mage archetype.  I'm beginning to have some starting ideas on where we might begin but want to let things develop a little more first.

Are we using traits?

Re: OOC

I am so used to it always being two, I did not even think to mention them.  I'll edit to clarify that PCs have two traits.

Re: OOC

I almost didn't think to ask, because yeah, it seems pretty standard to have traits now. I was originally assuming that we would have traits, but then suddenly realized that maybe I shouldn't assume.

Yeah, I just assumed as well as I'm so use to having two traits starting.

Re: OOC

Well, I nixed the original idea and created a Investigator (Questioner)/Bard (Sound Striker). This is of course just the first concept. After a couple more builds I'll finalize...:-)

Re: OOC

Finally settled on a few more key details for my character.
Name: Rozzick Cheshire
Alignment: true neutral
Familiar: a Compsognathus (a tiny two-legged dinosaur)

My character sheet is progressing steadily, but it will still be a while before it is complete.

Re: OOC

Player 1 - I've set your name - let me know if you want an NCP character for the familiar.

Player 2 - Questioners are neat. I never noticed that one before.  I'm finding the concepts interesting and look forward to seeing where you land. :)

I've been thinking about the setting and have a fairly decent background premise worked out.

Re: OOC

Awesome! I don't think I should need a second account for my familiar. Thank you though.

Additionally, since I am an abomination Half-Umbral Dragon person, would that classify me as a monster for the purposes of taking the Multiattack feat? ;-P I even meet the "three natural attacks" prerequisite. https://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats...s/multiattack-combat

I would say no. You aren't a monster, whatever some of the other mages say :-)

Re: OOC

So, does this world have firearms? If so, primitive or advanced? I've never played a gunslinger before and I'm thinking might bandy about the idea a bit of guns are a thing.

Re: OOC

If you want to play a gunslinger, the setting will have firearms.  (And possibly zombie ogres that wield old-fashioned cannons.)

I'm open to modern or primitive.  I can work with either.

Re: OOC

Truth be told, I really only want the advanced pistol. If you've ever seen the movie Equilibrium with Christian Bale, I'm thinking about an order of gun wielding ascetic monks who wonder the land bringing peace and order...:-)

Re: OOC

Yes, I have seen it and please make that happen in this game.

P.s. I'm trying out writing styles.  Do you two like a slightly humorous approach interwoven with grittiness or do you prefer more straight laced?

Example:

quote:
About a few hundred years ago, the mages of Talsant had come to a worrisome conclusion.  This particular conclusion had required about a century of being shouted down by "wiser minds," until, at last, a panel of young upstarts had prevailed at the 202nd International Parliament of Mages.

Their conclusion was that the world was ending.

Outside the conference, however, most folks shrugged.  It was not unusual for mages to talk about worlds ending, after all.  And it was apparently two hundred years away.

The world decided that at some point, they'd get around to it.

Later, the autocrats of feudal kingdoms realized that the end of the world would eventually create panic and, possibly worse, resistance to spending one's life shackled to systems of huge wealth inequality.

The autocrats pointed out that the mages had got it wrong. Or that they had overblown the problem. That the use of umbral energy was not, in fact, eating away at the barriers between worlds like some kind of corrosive acid. It was just eating away at it a little.  Planes didn't just crash into each other.  Use of some positive energy would fix it all. Songs were paid for, and bards popularized how silly the very notion was.

So at the 400th conference of mages, the world had managed to just about ignore the problem.

Re: OOC

A combination of the two styles, when narratively appropriate, seems fine to me. Your example, is perfect in my opinion. It has both humor and a no nonsense approach. It conveys both styles equitably...:-)

Re: OOC

I think I might drop Half-Celestial and just go human with the simple advanced template. Sorry, I have a hard time nailing down concepts. If I do decide to do this, I'll probably go Investigator (Questioner) 20 on one side of the build and Gunslinger (Pistolero) 5/Unchained Monk 6/Aegis 9 on the other. We'll see...:-D

Re: OOC

One more thought: What about taking two templates? The Mutant and Advanced Simple Template together are both +1 which would be a total of +2. That matches the Half-Umbral Dragon's +2. However, I can see where you might say no. And yes, I can easily come up with a narrative reason for having both templates, but then again, anyone can always come up with reasons...:-D

Re: OOC

It's up to Rozzick.  Templates don't fit neatly into boxes - that's why I am fine as long as you two feel it's ok.

Re: OOC

To give Rozzick perspective of the template choices, I will expound. In bullet point format...:-)

1. Monk order only chooses the best of the best, this Advanced Simple Template
2. Years of training and magical supplementation, thus Mutant Template.

I will expand this more with some background fluff if you find this basic reasoning sound.
