Chapter 3.2: The Leave-Taking

"Now now, leaving so soon?  No, you must stay..." A croaky voice said within the depths of the cavern.    Then a wet fleshy appendage lashed out from the darkness, wrapping around the dragonborn's waist and began pulling him back into the darkness.
ROLL: Something rolled a 23 to hit Tyrsoir, and is grappled and restrained.

"By Moradin's bottom, will you stop shooting those webs?  I can't do everything you know!" Frilia stabbed at the fat bodied spider, hoping to kill it, once and for all.  While her blade was true, it was not enough to finish the beast.
ROLL: Frilia rolled a 14 to hit, and dealt 10 piercing damage.

The pale blue spider grabbed the bound form of Yawgo and began pulling the cocooned tortle away from the battle.  The torch Yawgo had been carrying lay behind, still burning on the floor.

Breathing heavily, Hannah once again tried to break free of the spider's webbing, but was unsuccessful.
ROLL: Hannah rolled 8 on a Strength saving throw, and is still Restrained.

ROLL: Jet black spider rolled a 5, and regains its web attack.
Scuttling around a stalactite, the jet black giant spider fired a globule of webbing at Frilia's echo.  The globule passed through the translucent grey figure, and splattered against the table behind her.  A few stray strands latched on to Frilia who was nearby, but not enough to hinder her in any way.

OOC: Next up is Kursak, Tyrsoir, Lucy, and Maglynn

Chapter 3.2: The Leave-Taking

Tyrsoir stood up shakily and looked at Lucy, just as the strange appendage came out of the darkness and wrapped around him. He knew he was in danger - whatever was speaking to him had trapped him, and the zombie drew closer. His instincts kicked in and he felt the pressure of magic again build up into his mind as he held his hand out, a drip landing on his palm.

He called for the water to help him, to make ice, and it shaped into a spike. His intial instinct was to aim for the enemy, but the zombie was closer and more of a threat.

[Language unknown: "Aime ndat, din!"]

The shard sped towards the dwarven undead.

Chapter 3.2: The Leave-Taking

The sound - a wet snap.  It was a sound filled with dread and grief, associated as it was with the recent murder of Lynn's owl companion.  "Dragon's eyes," the Inquisitive cursed as the sounds came to her from the upper chamber.  In her gut she knew that it had been waiting for her.  It had been using the draconic as crude bait.  She would have to oblige it now.  Whatever it might be.

Dodging out from behind her concealment of rock, Velderan loosed another shot at the spider looming over Hannah and Frilia.  She was rewarded this time with the sight of her bolt missing by fractions to splinter against the stone behind.  The shot, however, was an afterthought, and she was sprinting even as her bolt hummed on its way to oblivion.  A quick dash put Yawgo's torch within reach where she snatched it up and shot back up the passageway.

"I think that I have found Tyrsoir!" she called out as she ran.  "COME WHEN YOU CAN!"

Chapter 3.2: The Leave-Taking

Kursak continued to struggle against the spiders' webbing, cursing the bitch goddess who put them here. He needed to get out of these webs, and get into position to help keep everyone alive.  With a mighty effort, the cleric managed to free one arm from the webbing, and then use that arm to start pulling away other webs.  Within a matter of moments, he'd managed to clear all but he last stands of webbing from his armour, and moved, climbing over the body of one of the giant spiders to end up near the northeast corner of the chamber.  nearby, the pale blue giant spider was dragging Yawgo across the floor.
ROLL: Kursak rolled 12 (with Advantage from DM Inspiration), and successfully tore free of the spider's webbing.

Tyrsoir felt the winter ice coallesce into a dagger-like shard in the palm of his hand. fuelled by arcane energy he was only beginning to understand.  Almost started by its appearance, he thrust his hand toward the zombie and the icicle shot forward, burying itself in the dwarven zombie's face.  A heartbeat later, it exploded, ice shards peppering everywhere, including back onto the wounded dragonborn himself!
ROLL: Tyrsoir rolled a 16 (with disadvantage) to hit the zombie, and dealt 10 piercing damage.
OOC: The knife then explodes and dealt an additional 6 cold damage.
ROLL: The zombie rolled a 4 on a Dexterity saving throw, and takes the full cold damage.
ROLL: The zmobie rolled 11 on a Constitution saving throw, and remains upright, thanks to Undead Fortitude.
ROLL: Tyrsoir rolled 18 (with disadvantage) on a Dexterity saving throw and takes 3 cold damage (reduced to 1, since you're resistant to Cold damage) from his own ice knife.
ROLL: ??? rolled a 13 on a Dexterity saving throw, and takes 6 cold damage (reduced to 3).

The fat-bodied giant spider on top of Hannah bit down once more, injecting venom again into the young paladin.  The bite was deep, and the toxin burned like wildfire as it was pumped into a vein.
ROLL: Fat-bodied giant spider rolled a 23 to hit, and dealt 11 piercing damage.
ROLL: Hannah rolled 7 on a Constitution saving throw, and takes an additional 12 poison damage.

Lucy fired her crossbow, and watched the bolt shatter against the rocks behind.  But that was an afterthought, as her primary target had been the torch.  As she raced back towards the dragonborn, she spotted high up in the wall of webs another giant spider, this one busy spinning its web.  Then the was through and next to the dragonborn.  The zombie, its face a ruined mess, was somehow still up and fighting.

The light brought by the torch illuminated much of the cavern beyond.  Mushrooms dotted the cave here and there.  A small rivulet of water ran from a crack in the wall to the north of her.  Over time, the rivulet had carved a small channel in the floor, bisecting the cave as it flowed to the west, where it collected into a pool.  A very large red mushroom sat on a higher ledge of the cave -- and a large squat frog-like creature stood in the middle of the chamber.  Its body was bloated and fat, and covered in a thick knobbled hide.  Horned ridges decorated its shoulders and the top of its head, and a long fleshy tongue extended from an impossibly wide mouth.  The tongue was currently wrapped around the dragonborn's waist.

Maglynn loosed another blast of compressed air, which hit with a thunderous crack against the jet black spider.  The bolt hit, and bored a hole through the spider's body, which released its grip on the celing and fell with a splat to the cave floor.
ROLL: Maglynn rolled 24 to hit, and dealt 9 force damage and 2 thunder damage.

The dwarf zombie, bit of flesh falling off its frame from the damage it had sustained, lashed out at the bound form of Tyrsoir.  The claws looked set to tear into the dragonborn's flesh, but the dragonborn's hide was thick as well.  A second swipe looked closer, but the dragonborn make an instinctive gesture and an arcane field like white frosted glass sprang up between them.  The zombie's claws scraped down the shield with a shower of frost.
ROLL: Dwarf Zombie rolled 14 (with advantage) to hit Tyrsoir, does not penetrate his natural armour.
ROLL: Second attack was a 16 to hit, but Tyrsoir's shield deflected that.

OOC: Next up is Frilia and Hannah.
OOC: Lucy, you would note that you cannot use your crossbow while you're holding a torch, as the crossbow requires two hands to operate.

Chapter 3.2: The Leave-Taking

With the introduction of light to the chamber, there was a sudden violent thrashing near the north wall, and a small zombie, this one once a goblin, tore its way free from a dry cocoon, crawling forward on its hands before it stood up.  Its skin was a dry, dusty grey, and looked like paper stretched too thin over bones.  Its lips had curled back away from jagged teeth, and bony claws punctured the fingertips, where the flesh had withered away past the ends of the fingers.
OOC: Lair action: Kaanvok summoned a zombie!

"Welcome to my parlor, said the spider to the fly," the entity said, "But then Kaanvok came in, and the spiders had to hide!"  The creature, resembling a gigantic fat horned toad, turned and leapt away in a single bound as it leapt up over a stone riser to land on a ledge below the largest mushroom.  Tyrsoir, caught in the Kaanvok's tongue, was carried along helplessly.
OOC: Kaanvok jumped 15 feet away with the grappled Tyrsoir.  I need Tyrsoir to make a Strength:12 saving throw or fall prone with the sudden movement.

The gnome tried to stab the fat bodied spider again, but its movement as it bit Hannah made her miss.  Pissed off, she exclaimed "Leave my friend alone!" before finding it into herself to strike again in a burst of fury.  Fueled by her frustration, Frilia made a couple of piercing attacks with her slender blade.  The first thrust missed as the spider rear scuttled across Hannah's shoulder.  The spider reared back in a threat display, which gave Frilia her opening, and the slender blade piercing the spider's abdomen, opening it up.  Guts and viscera spilled out, all over the bound form of Hannah.
ROLL: Frilia rolled a 10 to hit the spider, and missed.
OOC: Using Action Surge!
ROLL: Frilia rolled a 17 to hit the spider, and dealt 6 piercing damage.

The pale blue spider, still dragging the bound form of Yawgo, reached the wall and began to climb, dragging its prize with it.
OOC: Pale Blue Spider is 10 feet up the wall.  Yawgo's dragged 5 feet up the wall.

Behind Lucy, the giant spider who had been building its web crept across the ceiling into the tunnel, leaving a series of hanging webline threads behind.  The spider shot a now-familiar globule of webbing towards the human woman which hit her in the back before exploding into a mass of sticky binding threads.
ROLL: Trailing web giant spider rolled a 14 to hit Lucy.  Lucy is Restrained, and can use an action to make a Strength:12 ability check to burst free.

Perhaps aided by the slick coating of spider blood that now ran down her upper body, Hannah managed to tear free of the webbing and scramble to her feet, charging down the tunnel after Lucy.  Ahead, she could just see the torchlight beyond the corner of the wall, as well as the bound and struggling form of Lucy, with a small goblin zombie approaching from the far end, and a giant spider on the ceiling between her and the rogue.

OOC: Next up is Kursak, Tyrsoir, Lucy, and Maglynn.

Tyrsoir stood there, wrapped up by the tougne of this toad demon and he felt true panic for the first time. Even when he faced the glowing orbs, and the beast that would not die he had some hope - or it was his drake instinct maybe. Now though, with him being weak, and being more humanoid than drake he was scared.

Taking a breath, he let the air chill his scales, making them slick. as he did, he twisted and managed to slip free of the demon.  [Language unknown: "Ure verol vor lesvirher a aier. Eval ckatee nthe!"] He muttered.

The impact came from behind, the force of it entering her consciousness before the consequence.  It was, therefore, a moment before Velderan realized that she had not suffered injury from the blow, but was now ensnared by it.

"Help," she called out, adding to the pleas of the draconic.

She thrashed for a moment, unable to break free.  As she did so, her eyes took the measure of the abomination that had announced itself as Kaanvok.  Should she free herself, she thought, she felt with great surety that she could place a bolt into one of several vulnerable spots.

Chapter 3.2: The Leave-Taking

Kursak assaulted the pale blue spider with necrotic raven magic, as it pulled Yawgo away. To kill the thing would be best, but to distract or interrupt it's claiming Yawgo as its prize would suffice.  The ghostly raven's claw appeared above the spider, talons sinking into the pale blue skin.  Fine lines of black spread from the point of impact.
ROLL: Kursak rolled 18 to hit, and dealt 1 necrotic damage.
ROLL: The pale blue spider rolled a natural 20 to resist the telekinetic pull of its prey.  No effect.

Tyrsoir, acting on old instincts, moved to flatten the scales which covered his hide, making them slick and slippery.  His new hide didn't quite work that way however, and Keenvok's tongue remained firmly about his middle.  [Language unknown: "Ckcon thla usth chwhol n som. Ngan ardprence dirat!"] he muttered.  The toad-like entity gave a wide toothy grin, and chuckled, seemingly pleased with itself.
ROLL: Tyrsoir rolled a 21 to free himself from the grapple.  This is resisted by Kaanvok, who rolled a 24!  Tyrsoir is still grappled!
OOC: Though I will say that he should not have been restrained as previously mentioned.  I'll remove that condition, which means attacks against Tysoir no longer have advantage (didn't matter anyway; no one attacked him inbetween then and now).  Tyrsoir's attacks still have disadvantage due to his exhaustion.

The goblin zombie, dust and dirt falling from its skin, launched itself at the bound form of Lucidity, loosing a horrible screech of insensate fury, clawed hands ripping and tearing.
ROLL: Goblin Zombie made a multi-attack of claws against Lucy.  Rolled a 16 to hit, and dealt 6 points of slashing damage.
ROLL: Goblin Zombie rolled a 23 to hit, and dealt another 6 points of slashing damage.

Lucy had no luck with trying to escape from the spider's webs, partly due to the fact that the goblin zombie was tearing into her stomach and seemingly trying to pull out her intestines.  Still, despite the pain and terror, she kept one eye on Kaanvok, studying his movements, certain she could find vulnerabilities she could exploit -- if only she could get free.  "Help!" she called, adding to the pleas of the dragonborn.
ROLL: Lucy rolled a 8 on a Strength check to break free, and remains stuck.
ROLL: Lucy rolled a 27 on an Insight check for Insightful Fighting.  This beats Kaanvok's 22, so Lucy can use her sneak attack damage on Kaanvok without requiring advantage for 1 minute.

Maglynn moved forward, staying well to the rear of the fight, and loosed another eldritch blast at her target -- this time the pale blue spider tugging Yawgo up the wall.  Her foot slipped on patch of blood on the stone floor, and her shot went wide, blasting with a hideously loud crack against the wall.
ROLL: Maglynn rolled 10 to hit, which missed the pale blue spider.

The dwarf zombie seemed fixated on Tyrsoir, turning to follow as the dragonborn was hauled away by Kaanvok.  The zombie lunged forward, bony claws extended, but once again Tyrsoir's thick dragon-like hide seemed to stymie the zombie's efforts.
ROLL: Dwarf zombie made a multi-attack against Tyrsoir.  Rolled a 12 to hit on the first attack, which does not penetrate the dragon hide.
ROLL: Dwarf Zombie rolled a 13 to hit on the second attack, which doesn't hit, either.

Chapter 3.2: The Leave-Taking

Hannah's head was swimming. The severity of her wounds were great, and the poison clouded her senses, making her dizzy. She had a difficult decision to make. In the end, she chose to prioritize her health. She could not save anybody if she was dead.

"J... just hold on a little longer..." she called out weakly. Even with the light source brought back into play, she could hardly see. Lifting a hand to the gushing puncture wound on her shoulder, she began to try to expel the poison out, threads of golden light weaving into the wound from her fingertips and causing the muscle and tissue to knit back together. Blood occasionally splurted out as she magically forced the venom from her blood.

Chapter 3.2: The Leave-Taking

Kaanvok turned to look back and laughed.  "Heh heh heh heh.  Look, there really is no need for all of this," he said.  "You don't need to die to become useful to me.  I can even make you rich in the process."
OOC: Due to the acoustics of this cave system, this is audible to everyone.

"How many of those damned spiders are there?" Skillfully avoiding the viscera of the spider she just killed, Frilia spotted Hanna in a bad state, and jumped in the action, running towards the paladin.  The spider ahead was too high for her, but she used her new found trick and summoned her echo in the air, to take a stab at the spider.  Her previous echo vanished from it position near the body of the rocky grey giant spider, reappeared in the air as Frilia stabbed with her blade, feeling it sink into the spider's body, then fell to the floor, where it flickered, and vanished.  The spider twitched and spu, beady eyes facing the gnome.
ROLL: Frilia rolled a 17 to hit, and dealt 9 piercing damage.
OOC: The echo falls 15 feet, takes 1 hp of damage, and vanished.

The pale blue spider continued its climb, dragging the incapacitated form of Yawgo behind it as it moved up the wall.  It looked to be heading for a crack high up in the corner, presumably to escape with its meal.

ROLL: Trailing webs giant spider rolled a 6 on 1d6, and gets its web attack back.
The giant spider with the web-lines trailing from its adbomen launched a globule of webbing at Frilia.  The gnome, ready for such tactics, dodged neatly to one side, and the globule splattered on the stone floor.
ROLL: Trailing Web Spider rolled an 8 to hit, which missed horribly.

Hannah took a moment, calling on the divine power of the Platinum Dragon to heal herself.  Her hand glowed white for a moment as she pressed it to her belly, feeling the healing energy wash into her.
OOC: Hannah healed 6 hp: 1 from lay-on-hands, and 5 from her hit dice.

OOC: Next actions are on Kursak, Tyrsoir, Lucy, and Maglynn!

Velderan thrashed against the binding fibers of the arachnean webbing even as pain lanced across her abdomen under the assault of the undead goblin.  But she remained stuck fast,

"What could you possibly offer us?"  There was desperation in the Inquisitive's voice.  "I can smell the stench of evil on you even over your undead minion next to me.  In fact, I have already deduced the offer that you intend to make to us," she cried.

Chapter 3.2: The Leave-Taking

Kursak accepted that Yawgo's fate was now out of his hands. Unable to break the sticky bonds of the spider's web and unable to reach the druid even if he could have, there was nothing he could do but trust in the Matron and that all deaths came in Her time. He prayed for Her to watch over Yawgo, whatever his path might be, accepted his failure to protect him as he had the others they'd lost before.

There were still others who needed him. Others who it was not too late to help.

The spiderwebs held him in all the ways that were bad for him.  For all his size and strength, he simply had no leverage to get free.
ROLL: Kursak rolled 10 on a Strength check, and is still bound up.

But none of that meant the chsoen of the Raven Queen was unable to act.  Managing to reach the holy symbol of the Raven Queen around his neck, he touched, focused his will on Hannah, and whispered a divine word.  Healing energy rushed out of him all at once, bridging the gap between himself at the beleagured human,, filling her with cool, energising power.
ROLL: Kursak cast Healing Word, healing Hannah for 6 hp.
ROLL: Hannah spent 1 hit die, and healed for an additional 11 hp.

Tyrsoir was so close to the dwarf zombie that plagued him he could smell the stench of death, but also saw Lucy was being plagued by a new undead. The drake-turned-dragonborn didn't understand the full extent of his power yet, but he felt it bottling up inside him, and with the visions, suspected the source.  Seeing both in a line, he held his hand out.  [Language unknown: "Hiei ivur.....ingrutwil verersvor th lar,"] He muttered.  The light from Lucy's torch reflected off the pattern of scales on his hand and arm, and arcane power burst forth from him with something like pain -- like tearing a muscle by moving too quickly.  The spray hit the dwarf zombie in front of him, and the zombie's eyes clouded over black.  The spray continued beyond the zombie and hit the small goblin zombie that was tearing into Lucy's stomach.  The goblin's eye washed over with black, but before it could complete, the power in the spell faded, and the goblin's eyes returned to normal.
ROLL: Tyrsoir cast colour spray at 1st level, and affected 38 hp worth of zombie... but the second zombie's hp was higher than the balance after the first.

"What could you possibly offer us?"  Lucy's voice was desperate as she tried to ignore the goblin zombie before her.  "I can smell the stench of evil on you even over your undead minion next to me.  In fact, I have already deduced--"  What she had deduced, she never got to say, as the goblin's first slash opened her up and stole her breath away.  The last she saw before consciousness fled her was the goblin's emaciated arm deep in her guts, pulling out thick grey ropes -- her own intestines, she realised, and then the world went black.

"What was that?  Hrmmm?  You've already deduced.... what?"  Kaanvok paused as if listening.  "Oh, you need a minute.  By all means!  Take all the time you need.  I'm sure you'll come round to my way of thinking in another minute or two."
ROLL: Goblin zombie rolled 24 (with advantage) to attack Lucy, and dealt 9 slashing damage.
ROLL: The second attack was a 22 to hit, and dealt 7 slashing damage.
OOC: Lucy is down.  Since this happened on the goblin's turn, and your turn is next, make a death saving throw for me.  Roll 1d20 with no modifiers.  Your fate is in the gods' hands now.

Maglynn continued to hang back and hurl spells, albeit ineffectually.  Her blast of arcane power hit the spider, but the bulk of the blast had gone into a stalactite, which shattered and fell to the ground below.
ROLL: Maglynn rolled a 15 to hit and dealt 2 force damage and 2 thunder damage.

The dwarf zombie, blinded by Tyrsoir's magic -- he had magic -- swung wildly, which the dragonborn was able to dodge easily.
ROLL: Dwarf zombie rolled a 7 (with disadvantage) to hit Tyrsoir, and missed.
ROLL: Second attack was even worse -- a 6.

OOC: Next actions are on Frilia and the rejuvenated Hannah!
