Chapter 3.2: The Leave-Taking

Empowered by healng magic, Hannah rushed towards the bound form of Lucy. She reached for her last Javelin as she ran, and attempted to throw it at the goblin zombie assailing her friend. "Hey! Over here! Focus on me!" she yelled, hoping to draw its attention away from Lucy.

Chapter 3.2: The Leave-Taking

Kaanvok leapt back once more, dragging the helpless Tyrsoir with him.  The demon toad landed in the shallow pool of water collecting around a crevice in the wall, and he flung Tyrsoir several more feet beyond him.  The dragonborn landed in a heap up against a large red mushroom, water spraying up behind him.
ROLL: Kaanvok rolled a natural 20 (with advantage) on a shove attack against Tyrsoir.  Tyrsoir is flung an additional 30 feet from Kaanvok's position, but it no longer grappled.
OOC: Tyrsoir make a Dexterity saving throw to see if you remain on your feet.

After dodging the webbing, Frilia again called her echo to reach the hanging spider.  "Come down here so I can properly filet you!"  The threat became unnecessary as Frilia felt her blade strike true from the echo's position before it fell to the ground and dissipated.  The spider's legs detached from the ceiling one by one and it fell with a heavy crash onto the floor.
ROLL: Frilia rolled 18 to hit, and dealt 13 piercing damage.  The giant spider is dead.

The pal blue giant spider squeezed itself into the crack in the wall, pulling the webbed up form of Yawgo after it.  The tortle's form was too big to fit in the hole with his shell, but the webbing around his body stuck to the hole's sides, and he seemed to be wedged in at an angle.  Apparently the spider could still bite him, as Yawgo twitched and convulsed once more before going slack in the webbing.
ROLL: Pale blue spider rolled 21 (with advantage) to bite Yawgo.  Since Yawgo is paralysed, it's an automatic critical hit, and Yawgo takes 9 piercing damage.  Yawgo's unconscious.
ROLL: Yawgo rolled a 6 on a Constitution saving throw, which fails, and the venom injested by the spider causes a failed death save.
OOC: The spider has complete cover behind Yawgo's form.  To hit the spider, you'd need to get Yawgo out of the way -- or go through him.

The javelin whiffed by the goblin by an embarassingly wide margin, but Hannah's shout seemed to have an effect, as the small goblin head turned to look at the human warrior covered in spider-blood and guts.
ROLL: Hannah rolled a natural 1 on the attack roll.
ROLL: Hannah rolled a 17 (with disadvantage) on an intimidation roll.

OOC: Next actions are on Kursak, Tyrsoir, Lucy (Death Save), and Maglynn!

Timeless was the light at Death's threshhold.  She'd barely remembered the pain that had driven her to this place.  How long ago had that been?  All recollection was distant, as of long years in the past.  There was only here.  Now.  And the light.

Tyrsoir felt the jolt of being thrown, luckily against a mushroom causing no damage. He groaned as he stood up, the sight of the demon toad ahead of him, he noted the prone form of Lucy on the ground. His instincts called to attack the big toad, but he knew in his state he was no match for it. He also knew if the zombies continued to attack the woman, she would die.

.....like his mother.

His instincts, his drake blood called to fight. But he knew in his state that he would fall like the woman. He only hoped the clutch-mates would help her where he could not.

Seeing little option, he saw a rock and went behind it, crouching hoping the demon frog would not attack him

With Maglynn's aid, Kursak finally broke free of the blasted webbing. "Damn spiders. Thank you." He then rushed to the next area, trying to lay eyes on Tyrsoir, Lucidity, and any others who happened to be out of his sight.   As he caught up with Frillia and Hannah, he laid eyes on an unconscious Lucidity, about to be consumed by an undead goblin. He spoke half-prayer, half-command, channeling the divine power of the Queen of Ravens, [Language unknown: "Rutatiall, Tedonsaveiou!"]  Healing energy rolled out of Kursak, flitting across the intervening space with motes of silver-grey energy.  The divine power sank into the human woman, dragging her spirit back into her body with a shock.
ROLL: Kursak cast Healing Word and Level 1, and healed 6 hp.
ROLL: Lucidity rolled 1d8 and healed an additional 3 hp.
OOC: Lucidity gains one level of exhaustion.

Tyrsoir felt the jolt of being thrown, luckily against a mushroom causing no damage.  His instincts, his drake blood called to fight. But he knew in his state that he would fall like the woman. He only hoped the clutch-mates would help her where he could not.  Seeing little option, he saw a rock and went behind it, crouching hoping the demon frog would not attack him
ROLL: Tyrsoir rolled 9 (with disadvantage) to hide (Stealth).
OOC: Colour Spray ends.

The goblin zombie, attracted by Hannah's taunt, dropped to all fours and ran around Lucy and right at the paladin.  She laughed herself into a frenzy of attacks, bone-like claws tearing and scratching.  The claws rattled as they scraped against the woman's chain mail, but the armour held strong.
OOC: Teh goblin zombie is making two claw attacks against Hannah.
ROLL: Goblin Zombie rolled two 11s, neither of which penetrate Hannah's armour class.

The dwarf zombie, eyes cleared from the effects of Tyrsoir's spell, saw the goblin attacking Hannah and rushed over to join in.  It fared no better than its companion, claws scraping against Hannah's armour as well.
OOC: Dwarf Zombie is making two attacks against Hannah.
ROLL: First attack rolled a 6, and the second attack rolled a 13.

OOC: Next up: Frilia and Hannah.  Lucy, you may act here too -- since you were brought back before your turn.

The light had called.  But another voice, stern, more urgent, commanding, seized her by the scruff, and jerked her back into a world of leaden pain.  Thought came glacially, offering a bare trickle of remembrance.  Sheer instinct alone drove the Inquisitive to struggle against the silken bonds of webbing.  To no avail.

Chapter 3.2: The Leave-Taking

Kaanvok, his bloated form squating comfortably in the pool of water, made a throwing gesture.

"Oh good, more people.... Practically an infestation of them."  The demon toad spoke in his croaky voice.  "It really doesn't have to be this way.  Why not stop, and at least consider my offer?  You'd be much more useful to me alive than dead.  Better for you, too!"

Frilia bolted forward around Kursak, who was just standing there.  She raced around the corner, used to be faster than the big folk, looking for more spiders to kill.  There were none.  In fact, this cavern seems suspiciously empty of spiders or their webs.  What he almost ran over in her haste was a small goblin zombie, currently attacking Hannah.  Frilia summoned forth an echo of herself from a timeline where she had been even quicker, and thrust with her rapier, but the slender blade passed through the zombie's rib cage without touching flesh.
ROLL: Frilia rolled 9 to attack, which missed.

Bracing against the zombie onslaught, Hannah attempted to retaliate, but it was difficult to land a hit in the low light level of the cavern.  Nevertheless, she felt the shock of her blade hitting it target, and pressed hom, dragging the blade through putrefied flesh.
ROLL: Hannah rolled 10 to hit, and dealt 6 slashing damage.
Dwarf Zombie rolled 16 on a Constitution saving throw, and is still up fighting (Undead Fortitude).

Chapter 3.2: The Leave-Taking

Kursak prayed for patience, then spoke to the Queen's messenger.  ::Isolde, I am in need of your aid, Wise One.::  He focused his thoughts as he willed Isolde to enter the room.  A flutter of black wings and the tiny bird landed on a tiny red mushroom growing out of the rock.

Hearing the beast speak, the dragon man frowned thinking it spoke to him, then he saw the movement hear the zombies. Perhaps Lucy had got help, he hoped anyway (his mind instantly asked itself what hope was). Then he saw another familiar figure....the large man with the raven. He wanted to go to them, but the beast stood in the way.  He stood up and pointed at Kursak. [Language unknown: "Hila.....Lorine andit hihe alloneoer. Her. Oerhouine."]

The goblin zombie, its attention focused on Hannah, continued to try to rip and tear through the paladin's chain mail.  This time, her claws found purchase, drawing blood as she found gaps in the armour at her belly, and her sword arm.
OOC: Goblin zombie makes a multi attack against Hannah.
ROLL: First attack is a 21 to hit.  Hannah takes 6 slashing damage.
ROLL: Second attack is also a 21 to hit, and dealt 4 slashing damage.

ROLL: Lucidity rolled a 3 (with disadvantage) to tear free from the webbbing.

"Who -- the sisters at the grove?"  Kaanvok's croaky voice was contemptuous.  "It doesn't matter; they never leave.  And with you working for me -- they're even less an issue."

Maglynn watched in surprise and concern as Kursak ignored the hanging Yawgo and rushed off north.  Momentarily she looked to the hanging tortle and wondered if she should go to him.  Realising he was too high and she was no healer, she rushed to keep up with the goliath.  Moving slightly past him she stopped beside the goliath and noted the zombie creatures.  She reflexively hurled a spell at one of the closest ones.  Stopping just shy of a massive spiderweb that crossed the passage north, the elven woman launched another blast of eldritch force at the dwarven zombie.
ROLL: Maglynn rolled a 20 to hit, and dealt 2 force damage and 2 thunder damage.
ROLL: Dwarf zombie rolled an 11 on a constitution saving throw, and continues to fight.

OOC: Starting Round 5

"I would much rather have you serving me alive than dead," Kaanvok said, "But you seem to be labouring under the impression that you can somehow win.  Perhaps a demonstration is in order."    He leapt to a stone shelf alone the northern edge of the cavern in a single bound.  He raised his arms, and crimson light gathered at the ends of the his hands.  Then he brought his arms down forcefully, and all the mushrooms in the cavern began to shake, releasing a cloud of noxious choking spores.
OOC: I need everyone except Maglynn (including Isolde) to make a Constitution:15 saving throw.  Fail, and you take 8 poison damage and are poisoned for one minute.  Succeed, and you only take 4 poison damage and do not have the poisoned condition.

Chapter 3.2: The Leave-Taking

"Never."  The cloud of noxious spores seized all breath from the Inquisitive's lungs, and shook her in a paroxysm of wheezing coughs.

"I .. will ... die ... first," she managed between gasps for air.

Chapter 3.2: The Leave-Taking

The cloud of spores that filled the cavern was brief, but had a deadly impact, turning virtually everyone into a coughing mess.  The newly summoned Isolde fell off her perch, disappearing into the aether as her form discorporated from the damage.

Kaanvok stood up on his rock shelf, breathing deeply and looking at the impact with a satisfied expression.  "Do you see?  Come, serve me willingly.  You'll keep your miserable lives.  Or if you'd die first, then you'll serve me anyway as one of the withered husks in my army."  He pointed a Frilia, and a crimson glow surrounded his hand once more.
ROLL: Frilia rolled a 4 on her wisdom save, and takes 7 psychic damage.
OOC: Kaanvok gains 7 temporary hit points.

Frilia was preparing to strike down the goblin zombie when suddenly the mushrooms exploded in clouds of spores, gripping her by the throat, the air she was breathing burning. But she kept her focus thanks to her training and stabbed hard in the creature.  The slender blade pierced the creature's clavicle, sinking several inches into the fleshy body with almost no resistance.
ROLL: Frilia rolled 14 to hit and dealt 13 piercing damage.

Hannah, caught off guard by the sudden eruption of the spores, tried to swing her sword against her attackers, but the slash was thrown off-target by a sudden undeniable need to cough.
ROLL: Hannah rolled a natural 1, and missed her opponent.

OOC: Next up: Kursak, Tyrsoir, Lucy, and Maglynn, as well as the two zombies.  For those of you who are poisoned, remember that A poisoned creature has disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks.

Chapter 3.2: The Leave-Taking

Kursak struggled forward, choking on the spores and feeling a burning pain in his lungs. He fought the pain and a blinked the reflexive tears from his eyes enough for him to see well enough to pull out the components of his healer's kit. As he did, he looked at Hannah and choked out the words to connect the Raven Queen's blessings to her, "Steady, champion of Bahamut."

There was no telling what impact those poisonous spores would have on open wounds, and cleaning them with all the spores floating around was all but impossible. He did his best to tend to the wounds despite the circumstances.

Chapter 3.2: The Leave-Taking

"A life is raised from misery through the way in which it is lived."  A cough choked further speech, and the Inquisitive hoched up a glob of poisoned spoors, spitting black. In a way, she felt much relieved by Kursak's ministrations.  But the lethargy that cloaked her since her brush with death was overwhelming.  She thrashed weakly, still unable to free herself.

"Kill me.  Use the husk to your nefarious ends," she gasped.  "You will never corrupt the spirit that is within me."

As he did, he looked at Hannah and choked out the words to connect the Raven Queen's blessings to her, "Steady, champion of Bahamut."  There was no telling what impact those poisonous spores would have on open wounds, and cleaning them with all the spores floating around was all but impossible. He did his best to tend to the wounds despite the circumstances.
ROLL: Kursak healed Lucy for 13 hp by using a healing kit.
ROLL: Lucy spent 1 hit die and healed an additional 9 hp.
ROLL: Kursak cast Healing Word at Level 2 on Hannah, healing 9 hp.
ROLL: Hannah spent 2 hit dice and healed an additional 13 hp.

Tyrsoir coughed as he felt the toxin in his body weakening him. He knew on his own he could not do much, so he did what his instincts told him.  Limping with as much speed as he could muster, he headed for the group of his clutchmates, their faces now familiar to him.  The torch held by the one called Lucy lit up the immediate area of the chamber, so he could see where he was going.
OOC: Move and dash for full movement -- 30 feet, since your movement is halved due to exhaustion.

The small goblin zombie vented its full fury on Hannah, making several slashes with it bone claws.  Nothing, it seemed, her armour wasn't able to handle -- this time.
OOC: Goblin Zombie makes a multi-attack on Hannah.
ROLL: Claw strike 1 missed with a 9 (with advantage) on the attack roll.
ROLL: Claw strike 2 missed with an 11 (with advantage) on the attack roll.

Lucy struggled valiantly in her bonds, the spider's web gripping her in its tight embrace.
ROLL: Lucy rolled 3 on a strength roll to try to break free.  It's not enough.

Maglynn watched in frustration as her friends gagged, fell and potentially died.  All she could do was keep shooting.  Try to take some pressure of them.  Her blast of eldritch power cracked into the dwarven zombie's face, snapping the neck back.
ROLL: Maglynn rolled a 19 to hit, and dealt 2 force damage and 2 thunder damage.
ROLL: Dwarven zombie rolled a 12 on a constitution saving throw, and continues fihghting thanks to Undead Fortitude.

The zombie turned its attention to Lucy, who was talking in front of it.  The first swipe by the zombie's bone-like claws was foiled by a particularly thick bunched up portion of Lucy's armour, but the second caught her in an exposed area, and she felt a burning sensation as blood began to flow once more.
OOC: Dwarf zombie makes a multi-attack against Lucy: two claws.
ROLL: First attack rolled a 12 (with advantage), which does not hit.
ROLL: Second attack rolled a 24 (with advantage), and dealt 9 slashing damage.

OOC: Next up: Frilia and Hannah.
