Game Planning Thread

Hello to all who have joined thus far, and to those who may yet join.

This game is not fleshed out at all yet, so I am open to suggestions for all aspects. That said, the initial concept I had for this game is that each player creates a character who is a member of a superhero team. The setting will be an alternate version of earth where just about any typical superhero-type scenario is plausible (think the setting for the show Invincible, or One Punch Man). Robots, monsters, magic, advanced tech, etc. It's all fair game.

The characters will need to face various threats together, as well as face more mundane challenges. How much of each will be determined by the players' particular interests.

I think I would enjoy a game in which Supers or powered individuals are an established fact. I would also like a setting in which they are not persecuted or hunted. there may be hate groups around but they are grass root and are not recognized or backed by the government. The evil government agency has been beaten to death, raised as a zombie then ridden till t he hoofs fell off. It's  dead Jim. (hides gun behind back)

A setting I found believable for a world with super powers was "Wearing The Cape." If you wanted to legaly fight crime you had to be trained and deputized at least in your hero identity. Most super teams did disaster releaf, rescue work and could be called in to assist the police if needed.

Hi everyone!

The proposed setup sounds good to me. What kind of power level are we aiming for with characters? What kind of ratio of adventure to socializing will there be for gameplay, and how much will be autonomous vs. GM-driven? Is there an overall theme in terms of flavor/aesthetics, like true to life, Marvel movies, comics, anime/manga, etc.?

Hey everyone.   I like the idea of heroes being the every day.   Anyone see the movie Sky High?  Same idea.

Also might be a great place to look for a power to use... hmm...

I can work with most any of that.  I know what my general concept will be, barring it not working with the setting, and I can make it work with most anything.

Re: Game Planning Thread

I also like the idea that superheroes are not going to be "illegal" in this world. They can't just do whatever they want without repercussions, but they are given quite a bit of leeway. I also don't think they are super rare, but you still don't often run into them during your everyday life.

Most of the answers to your questions will depend on what interests you guys. For power level, I would prefer less powerful than Superman (mostly because it might be tough to come up with good challenges), but other than that I am pretty flexible. As the GM I plan on presenting opportunities and challenges to your team, but it will be up to you guys how you want to react to them. Do you rush into the villain's lair, or scout ahead first, or nuke it from orbit? The choice will be yours.

For the overall theme, I am thinking something similar to the avengers movies where it is basically regular Earth overall, but the heroes and villains are a mish mash. Old gods, mutants, tech suits, aliens, and sorcerers all working together/against each other.

Again though, if you guys have alternative preferences, please let me know. These are just my initial gut thoughts on how I envision this game.

Here are some questions for you guys that can help flesh out the world:

What types of abilities do you want your character to have? Both fantastical and mundane. What might they have access too? (For example: money, tech, spellbooks, important contacts, or acces to a unique area)

What do you want your team to be called? Are you newbies or veteran supes? Are you a dysfunctional group or a well-oiled machine? Do you patrol a city, region, country, or the entire planet?

Re: Game Planning Thread

I’d fancy a high-powered game. Planetary defenders would be fun.

Re: Game Planning Thread

That all sounds good to me! I'll think about a character then. Going planetary-defender level without any system makes me a little worried about balance, but I'm game to give it a try.

What if we were to be a new team of supers called together to deal with some new threat, or just rising rates of villains? That way we don't have to come up with a lot of existing shared backstory and interactions and risk messing up each others' characterization.

For this game, I think the planetary defender level will most often involve handling threats that occur all over the planet rather than defending the entire planet from an outside force. So mostly the team just needs a good way to travel quickly to the source of the threat. Their lair might have a teleporter or a jet or something that could solve this issue, so probably not a huge concern for balance. (Unless I am overlooking something?)

In reply to GM (msg # 14):

I was thinking of balance between the PCs, I should have been more specific :) Since it's not a school game it's probably expected that everyone pull a similar amount of weight. But if, say, one person aims for Hawkgirl and another for Batman, those are both Justice League members and planetary defenders but there's a big gap between them.

Re: Game Planning Thread

It would be interesting to have a mix like the Avengers - some with just highly honed human abilities (Black Widow, Hawkeye) and others with superhuman abilities (Captain America, Thor).

Still others with the ability to utilize technology to their benefit, aka Iron Man.

...I like the MCU...

GM, are you open to ideas like Thor, a being from another universe/realm?  Or would you prefer we be Terran entirely?

Being from another universe/realm is fine, so long as you can still justify protecting Earth.

Lets be honest here, any game or system that has Superman level characters doesn't need any other characters. He is too Captain Anything, can defeat any threat often without really trying. In the comic and in the animations they have to create specific situations where for some reason he is limited or introduce some threat that is a one shot Earth ender if he does not defeat it. watched an interesting video once where they calculated what the effects of a full strength and power Superman punch would be. Even if he didn't hit anything the shock and blastwave would destroy everything in its path in a spreading cone of effect across the whole United States and that ignores the xray and gamma ray burst that would occure.

What I have in mind is an extraterrestrial ice queen.  Think Shiva from the final fantasy games and that's more or less what she is.  So really good at freezing things but extremely weak to fire.

Nice!  I have a character coming together in my mind as well.  He's Terran, but with super abilities.  He's going to be VERY fun to play I think...  muwahahahaha

I have a character in mind. He is a brick, but an educated and rather cultured brick. He is also a Darwin, able to evolve his body to deal with a very broad range of conditions or needs.

I was thinking of a character like Gladiator, most notably from the X-Men comics. He wouldn't necessarily be as powerful as Gladiator is (because he's Marvel's clone of Superman, and that's just wrong), but he would be powered by his own sense of self-worth.

As usual, my problem is too many possibilities I'd like to play >.< Plus I've played in so many games that failed to launch, or were just awful, so I have a ton of characters that never got a fair shake in the first place!

I have enough ideas that I can avoid stepping on toes - is anyone playing the party mage yet? Or has their heart set on it? Not totally sure about it myself but I might as well see what's free :)

Mine is a Tele-freak, if that helps?  The three T's - telekinesis, telepathy, teleportation.  Not magic, per se, but definitely something that might come in handy.
