The Merchant Prince and the Guild Council - The major political body of Port Azure, the Guildcouncil consists of eleven members, made up from the most powerful leaders from among the city's guilds. Each seat is a lifetime appointment, or until legally removed from leadership of their guild, according to each guild's traditions and customs. When a seat on the council becomes available potential guildmasters throw their hats in the ring and an election is held among the remaining members. This long held practice has on multiple occasions led to accusations of corruption and malfeasance, but has so far remained in place, with its supporters arguing that even if such things should take place, they are merely another aspect of honest trade and barter.
The position of Merchant Prince of Port Azure is traditionally one of power and esteem. Elected by the Guild Council from among their own number, the prince acts as both leader and figurehead outwards to the rest of world. He/she is the head of government, responsible for the daily running of the city and the enforcement of its laws. As such he/she is also the head of the of the Gilded Watch. With the power to appoint people to the various positions in the city, the prince's reach is potentially very long, though that has historically very depended on the person occupying the seat. Over the centuries Port Azure has seen a variety of princes come and go, some with the force of will or personality to lead the city to new heights, others marred by infighting on the council or outside influence. The current Prince, Aggios Nedán, has proven very capable. Able to forge alliances among the councilors, maintain order and slowly, but steadlidy expand trade, his is a celebrated reign of calm and prosperity.
