Times Square, New York City

Times Square has been cordoned off, and evacuated in preparation for Dr. Apocalypse's "demonstration of technological might". The National Guard had, already, been mobilized to deal with the mega-storm, so the cordon has been applied with military precision.
There are other metas, here, but most have barely recovered from the fatigue of battling the storm. Fortunately, heroes that were doing more 'restful' duty at a nuclear power plant have arrived, and the consensus is that those heroes face whatever Dr. Apocalypse sends.

Agent 9 sets the jet car down on the top level of a nearby parking structure and shuts everything down. “ Ok kids, we are expected so let’s get a move on. “ he gets out and opens the side door for the others before opening the back and pulling out a couple of pistols and slinging a rifle over his shoulder. Then with a soft whirring sound his appearance changes to that of a black, sleek clad super hero type look and holsters the pistols. “this way “ he says leading them down the stairs and out into Times Square  and takes his sunglasses off and looks around for a few moments

Road blocks, sealing off the area, are set up on all of the streets at the point where they meet the edge of the map. Police, Swat teams, firemen and other emergency personnel, along with their appropriate vehicles, are deployed behind these barricades.
Despite the distance, the heroes all night flight has allowed them to arrive just after dawn. There is a large assortment of food, supplied by the restaurants on the square, available for the first responders. The men on the barricade have made it clear that the heroes are considered one of them, and "help yourself, please." Between this largesse and the sleep they might have got on the trip, and the time between arrival and Dr. Apocalypse's indicated noon 'showtime', the heroes are sure to stand refreshed and ready for whatever.
Speculation as to whatever WILL be coming shows great imagination, stoic acceptance, minor immaturity, and in a very few cases outright emotional disturbance (where the hell would Apocalypse get Megatherium and how do you fit then with tutus, anyway?).

Grabbing a glazed strawberry donut, The Zenith wrapped it inside a large, greasy slice of New York style pepperoni pizza, and scarfs it down.

Licking her fingers clean, she releases a ladylike belch into her hand. "Excuse me."

The thought of seconds in enticing, but she doesn't want to be bloated should an opportunity to grapple with Dr. Apocalypse any time soon.

The giant mech ignores everything, including Rock Star's loud entry, and glides over to the smallest building, mostly billboards, and smashes it with both hands. The damage to the building is considerable; large chunks fall into the streets.

OOC: Note the change in the previously posted map occurs at phase 28, using the map's scale and some trigonometry, the distances between the characters can be calculated and range mods identified. The peculiar double slashes and obscure character groups are artifacts from using SuperCalculator2 to do the math

The Zenith's intended attack is hand to hand, to hit roll would be three or less. A condensed explanation of combat (including what die to roll to hit) can be found here.

Saber-7 didn't react to the gas, seemingly as unmoved and unliving as the titan they fought.

Rotating its gauss cannon, it fired another unearthly beam of crackling green energy, focusing on the same area it had hit before.

The lights don't diminish as Rock Star flies towards the giant robot's head. If anything, the intensity increases as bright white and gold flashes strobe around the flying star. "It's criminal
There ought to be a law
Criminal
There ought to be a whole lot more
If you want blood, you got it

But, this is only that sound bleeding from the edges of the powerful sonic beam aimed at the hatch. Unfortunately, the aim isn't quite right and the beam bounces off. The only damage done is cosmetic.

Agent 9 clubs the man at the console with the butt of his pistol, trying to knock him out not break his skull.

Not sure what the roll is sorry

GM edit
OOC: this does get a little involved:
    Attack is rolled as
  • Hand to Hand, no defense type 5
  • accuracy +6
  • level vs level -1
  • heightened expertise +4
  • from behind +4
  • pistol as makeshift club +1
yielding 19 or less to hit. Rolling 1d20-19 means any positive number is a miss.
    Damage is
  • basic HTH damage 2d8
  • added for makeshift club (pistol) +1d2

OOC That is complicated! I don’t recall it being that involved from way back.

Agent 9 pulls the unconscious man from the seat and muses for a half second that next time he will need to bring zip ties just in case. Then he opens the radio link “ anyone available to take custody of a bad guy? “ while he searches the controls the man was as to see what it does and how he might cause it trouble.

The Zenith maintains a force field in front of the mech's 'face' to thwart further use of that weaponry.

Agent 9 shuts down the console he's at. Saber 7 delivers the hapless mech pilot to the authorities and returns. The other operators of the mech decide Zenith is enough of an obstacle to warrant action. As one of the eyes fires a laser at The Zenith, missing by a fair margin, the right hand directs a blast of flame at building 'Q' while the left hand unloads a veritable bolt of lightning at building 'R'. While building 'Q' begins to burn inside the rooms, the electrical system of building 'R' begins to burn in side the walls.

Re: Times Square, New York City

The huge mech attempts to repeat it's previous actions. It does such a good job of repetition that its eye laser misses The Zenith again. From its left arm a lightning bolt strikes building designated 'S' setting off a cascade of sparks. Its right arm coughs out a gout of flame, rather than releasing a stream, directed at the ground around the mech's feet. The Zenith appears to have disabled that weapon.
Archer manages to arrive at about this time, and will notice numerous police officers firing their revolvers at the mech while a helicopter drops a conventionally armored combatant in a nearby alley.
Agent 9 breaches the hatch to the next area.
Light of eyeball-melting brightness comes out of the hatch on the mech's head. This is no surprise as Rock Star went into the hatch, previously.
The Zenith uses a force field to knock the right arm OFF the mech.

Empress, a stunningly gorgeous woman, appears inside the mech, smiling.
She says "Hello my dears, won't you do me this small favor and stop destroying this city?  Please?"

First Action: deferred from Init 40
Watching from nearby, in Times Square, Archer had been assessing the situation ... specifically analysing the robot for weaknesses that would help her bring the thing down.
She focused on the legs and associated joints.
- Weakness Detection

Second Action: Init 25
When she was ready, and had worded out just how she would use the weakness to her advantage, she charged forward ... growing in size to over 7 meters (nearly 24') tall, putting her to about the robots hip.

In a rather accurate display of Gridiron precision, Archer blocked the huge mech at the mid-leg ... in an attempt to shatter the knee, and tackle the 'bot to the ground (where it couldn't do so much damage to the nearby buildings).
She hoped that she could do so in a manner that caused as little damage to the city landscape as possible.
- rolled 20 using 1d20.  +35 unarmed tackle/attack (+4, +11 from Weakness Detection).
- rolled 18 using 3d10.  HTH damage.

As Archer studies the mech, noticing that the legs appear to be immobile, vents on the mech open and large fanjets lift it from the ground. At the same time, the left hand discharges bolts of electricity and small missiles at building T. The eye laser fires at The Zenith and misses, scorching the road surface almost seventy-five feet behind the giantess. The electricity slams into building T, the resultant shower of sparks suggesting some damage was done. The missile just skims the top of the building and expends it's munitions in midair, causing an odd thrum with some painful vibrations.

Anchor goes up the leg passageway and comes to a destroyed hatch leading to E deck. Therein he finds a destroyed console and another hatch that was previously forced open leading to D deck, where he finds Agent 9 and Empress.

Archer, stood at the Mech's dangling feet, looking up; aware that with those aerial thrusters, this thing could fly off (with her companions) at any moment, she was calculating how to next deactivate them.
Her scientific mind racing to calculate what could be done to those thrusters, or thrown in to them perhaps, to forcibly shut them down.

The Mech had caused some destruction to the nearby buildings ... was there a nice sized chunk of cement that a 24' tall lady could pick up (she could lift over 29,000lb)?
Or, maybe, a large telephone pole like beam, that could be used for thrusting and probing?

Since he heard the roar of the engines and felt the mech lift off the ground, Anchor switched to his M4/M203 and makes his way to where he heard talking. When he enters the room where the other supers are, he takes a wild guess as to who the good guys are and says I'm Anchor - do you need help setting this thing down? He lowers his weapon as well.

Assuming that these are the good guys, Anchor will scan the room for anything that looks like flight controls....if he finds something, he will attempt to land the mech.

So we were trying to figure out how to land this construct -- before it crashes or explodes or worse."

Empress had been studying the complex controls, but refrained from flipping switches since technology is not her specialty (by any means).  She gives up with a shrug. "Computers are so BORING."

She moves over to the pilots and picks them up easily, "You two land this bucket, I'll clear out this mess."

She smiles at both heroes.  Time stops and her unearthly beauty may cause their hearts to skip a beat.

Teleporting out the pilots will have to wait for next INIT.

Console B is clearly marked as "life support". It appears to be a monitoring station, as it has few controls.
Console C appears to be some sort of interface console. The only controls on it appear to be pushbuttons next to various data ports (male and female versions of USB C are obvious, the others appear proprietary).
Console D appears to be some sort of monitoring station. Apparently, before leaving the station the technician manning it turned it off. The only control on the station is a switch, currently in the position labeled 'off'.

Empress (on INIT 35) opens a shimmering yellow portal with her mind.

"I'm getting out of this hunk of junk with these two.  Care to come with me?"
She gives a dazzling smile and a look over her shoulder.

"See you heroes on the other side -- and next time don't knock out the pilots."
And a wink that could stop a heart from beating.

And then she steps through the portal and teleports outside with the unconscious criminal pilots.
(The other heroes can join if they wish.)
And then the portal closes.

She'll teleport approximately 500'-750' away (guessing at an explosion distance);somewhere with a good view of the action.
Maybe the roof of a nearby building?

There is a small PR cost (6) for teleporting.

On the rooftop in her subsequent actions, she will subject the pilots to an intensive interrogation; but they will be eager to divulge everything they know to her.

Hopefully she won't get too bored trying to wake them -- luckily there's loud rock music blasting and a dangerous mech nearby for stimulation.

Since the pilots are unconscious, she'll attempt to revive one pilot and then use the following action to attempt Emotion Control. Then she'll repeat with Pilot 2.

(Really only one pilot is needed to be controlled, but she'd likely zap both so they will completely divulge any information (willingly/eagerly) to her.

Also it's usually easier to arrest people who willingly go to jail to make their beloved happy.)

Please, what do all these consoles control, if nothing essential.   I would have assumed piloting controls here, and weapon controls, etc.   After all, what are all these folk doing here in this thing, operating 'non-essential controls'.

Please, when you say they are 'isolated':  isolated where?

"Sorry all," Archer said over the comms, "it seem the systems are isolate, and none of these consoles operate anything essential".

So, is everything essential about this mech being piloted and controlled remotely?  Is that what I am to understand?

Empress watches the useless movements until she can emulate them (just in case). Empress also positions herself between her operator and the gunman.

"Empress won't let that gunman shoot you, don't you worry.
Now tell Empress which control panel will disable this robot, won't you?
You wouldn't want Empress to get blown up if this robot self-destructs, right my sweet?"

Empress looks closely to the operator for her indication of which desk to disable.

As Agent 9's shield attempts to squirm away, another quick karate chop renders the man unconscious. The technician Agent 9 holds mumbles, almost as if chanting a mantra, "our cooperation is necessary though we are entirely unimportant". The other armed technician (from console d) fires their pistol at Agent 9, the lucky shot bounces off the armor worn by the target. Archer figures out that NONE of these consoles can shut down the robot, those controls must be elsewhere. What IS available would be:

cCommand Station, coordinates the actions of the other operators
dA sort of deadman's switch, as long as the woman here continues inputs, no self-destruct
eHandles communications to some other installation
fFlight controller, the pilot keeps the robot upright and away from crashing

She supposed that there was nothing to do but move into yet another room, and find that the consoles there were useless also.

The operator resists being pushed through the portal, but Agent 9 is too strong. Agent 9 attempts to follow the observed pattern on the 'deadman's console', but at the second slide he attempted to move discovered that it was more complex than appeared. The slide wouldn't move and the console buzzed. This was the moment when to original operator of the console leaps back through the portal with a look of desperation on her face. Shoving past Agent 9, she puts her hand on a slide that hadn't been used, yet, and hesitates for a moment before sliding it to the end. The console stopped buzzing and the operator continues to manipulate the slides. "I've got an implant, the specific movements are radioed to me. LEAVE ME BE!"

Empress wakes one of the technicians, and begins questioning him.The crew has never actually met or worked directly with Doctor Apocalypse (the fellow that appeared on television and threatened to unleash further destruction if he wasn't paid).
They were recruited and trained by The Destroyers, Apocalypse's private group of super-villains. The Destroyers were very careful not to reveal much information about themselves. The only member they ever dealt with directly was a female who called herself The Iron Maiden. She constantly wore a sophisticated suit of powered armor from which she got her name. She was the one who worked with
them and trained them to operate the Doomsday Robot. The rest of The Destroyers are made up of four men and one other woman.
The location of The Destroyers' headquarters, is where where some of the individual crew members received technical training. That headquarters is made up of the top three floors of the Montuori Trade and Industries Building. It can be reached from the rooftop or via a private elevator
in the lobby. The elevator requires a special magnetic card to operate. The crew member would be happy to let her use his (the name on the card is Shanley.

She was clearly too busy with cleanup to introduce herself.  When in place she could have been a nurse or a scene of crime officer although probably a cadet.  She was careful but not, apparently, especially skilled.  What was unusual was the speed with which she moved from place to place.

She moved on roller skates but at incredible speed.  If she were driving or riding  motorbike, she'd likely get pulled over for speeding.

Darkling smiled at Still Standing. "I'm not a trained medic I'm a skater but there's lots of stuff a volunteer can do with minimal training."

Re: Times Square, New York City

The threat of the mech is passed, and the other first responders are cleaning up the damage. Thanks to the efforts of the heroes, Times Square has suffered a minimal amount of damage. Saber 7 has already done most of the repair work that will be needed. Now the heroes will need to regroup and assault the facilities the giant robot came from.
The crew of the mech, thanks to Empress ability to convince them to do so, was very forthcoming with information. They had never actually met or worked directly with Doctor Apocalypse, as they were recruited and trained by The Destroyers, Apocalypse's private group of super-villains. The Destroyers were very careful not to reveal much information about themselves. The only member they ever dealt with directly was a female who called herself The Iron Maiden. She constantly wore a sophisticated suit of powered armor from which she got her name. She was the one who worked with them and trained them to operate the Doomsday Robot. The rest of The Destroyers are made up of four men and one other woman. No additional information about them is known.
The Destroyers' headquarters, where some of the individual crew members received technical training, is made up of the top three floors of the Montuori Trade and Industries Building. It can be reached from the rooftop or via a private elevator in the lobby. The elevator requires a special magnetic card to operate, and the mech crew surrendered two of these passcards.

Re: Times Square, New York City

The improbable hero called Still Standing spoke to whomever was assembled. "So I assume we have to go to the Montuori Building and face the terrorists?" He sighed resignedly.

"I suppose I can help. But does someone have a plan for getting in?"

Empress returns through the tele-portal, accompanied by any heroes that choose to go through.

"Alright, new heroes!  Exciting!  What can YOU guys do?"

She joins the group and powers down her TK defense.

"Maybe we could wear the Mecha operators' outfits and walk right in?"

"Maybe we can combine those, so our new folks here could wear the operator costumes?

I figure they will have seen Agent 9 and my face and want to block us from entering.  So you and I and Agent 9 could teleport in...?"

Empress is ready to go now.  "I'm ready to go there now. Any reason to hold off?  Was anyone wounded?  I don't think so...

Might also be good to have radios."

The masked and scruffy looking middle-aged man in black and red lycra raised is hand. "I guess I am ready too. Hello everyone. My name's, well some have called me Still Standing. That's my hero name. On account that I can get hit pretty hard and well, still manage to get up again. Oh and I can throw cars around, but I guess that's pretty standard for you hero types."

He smiled awkwardly, adjusted his mask unnecessarily and adopted what he thought to be a suitable pose. "I am ready to defeat this evil."

The mutant strides through the portal with long squid like tentacles  carrying him in the air as his body is suspended.

”You may call me the Kraken. I guard the darkest secrets of the sea.”

He looks down at one of the uniforms.

”This will not work for me.”

Agent 9 gives the new arrival a look up and down before addressing the rest of the group. “ yes I think that is where we go next but I think our opportunity to surprise anyone is long gone,I’m sure this fight went out live and whoever is there is expecting us or trying to clear out fast. So I think we need to hurry. Empress can you teleport into a place you haven’t seen before?”

Re: Times Square, New York City

Empress had lost track of the conversation and was looking off at the horizon, bored.

When her name was mentioned, this seems to rouse her from her daydream.

"Pardon me?  What were you saying?

Oh, can I teleport us inside the villains HQ?

I should be able to, however we might consider that a supervillain might have teleportation countermeasures in place - forcefields, matter warps, energy transformers -- it could be very bad.

Im willing to try and send someone ahead to scout, but we might do better attempting a conventional entry and keeping teleportation as a quick escape if necessary.

But I can teleport us right to the front door, or across the street, and then we could approach?"

To DM (and sharing with everyone else) I haven't seen any specific rules on if she can teleport somewhere she doesn't know and how precise and so on, so I'm winging it.  Seems like mostly focus is on distance, and Empress can do pretty darned far.

If you're fine with Empress teleporting everyone directly into unknown secret lairs, I'm fine with that -- but seems like at least having some very specific information on where might be required?

She teleported a giant mech into the ocean, but the ocean is a big place...

Re: Times Square, New York City

Just a quick reminder:
someone else somewhere:
That headquarters is made up of the top three floors of the Montuori Trade and Industries Building. It can be reached from the rooftop or via a private elevator in the lobby. The elevator requires a special magnetic card to operate. The crew member would be happy to let her use his (the name on the card is Shanley.

So it doesn't have to be hard to find, and could be approached fairly close, to figure out where to teleport to.

"Let's suit up and test out that badge.  Hey Agent 9, where do you get those in-ear Radios?  Sure would be handy."

Empress gathers the uniforms from the former operators, gets a few badges, and says goodbye (and gives out a few hugs & thanks).
When one of her fans likes Empress, they really like her.

When everyone is ready / suited up, she opens a teleport door to just outside (say approximately 1 block away, in an alley, so teleport door doesn't look suspicious) of the villain's HQ building.

She signals the heroes to move through the shimmering teleport door. "Teleporting is a great way to travel!  You can't beat instantaneous!  And I only charge one thousand per person.  Ha Ha!"

Re: Times Square, New York City

Still Standing dressed in the uniforms and nodded when he was ready. "Okay I am ready I guess. Will these guys have guns? Not sure what would happen if I was shot. I think it would be okay. Hopefully I won't find out, but whatever hey. We got hero work to do."

He stepped into the teleport, keeping clear of Kraken. Because the octopus-man kinda freaked him out, and he did his best to stay cool acting as if everything was business-as-usual. Because he was a hero after all.

Darkling, dressed in uniform... apart from the skates, holds her breath before the teleport and then lets it out when she arrives, no doubt causing bizarre btterfly effects throughout the world.  She looks around her to scope out the area.

Agent 9 shakes his head and pulls out a pistol and double checks it before stepping through. On the other side he addresses Emperess softly “We need to talk before we do this sort of thing again. “ then steps out to survey the situation.
