Cassandra laughs at the unintended joke Brant made about “standing taller” and wondered if there was any slight humor intended at the amiable Dwarf’s expense.  Probably not.  But things (including the Dwarf) we’re definitely looking up for the group.

Cassandra:
the group collectively hopeful and optimistic that the tavern and its occupants would provide a little more normalcy and information than the first two establishments they had visited thus far.

I couldn't help but laugh and think of the "Slaughtered Lamb" pub scene in American Werewolf in London.

Re: OOC

No worries, Otis.  We visited the Mayor and will receive bounties for offing some Rumps in the Tegel Manor.  We are now at the dumpy tavern trying to get some decent food and hopefully find out something, anything about what is going on in this town and with Tegel Manor.  Hopefully Ornwin will be able to find some common ground with the dwarven barkeep...

Welcome to the game and to the party, Brant!

I hope you won't take my in-game post (#116) the wrong way. Just role playing as seemed appropriate.

When you have time, could you give us a little personal background so we can get to know you?

Would you like Brant's background or his silent player's?

Re: OOC

Host: still a bit confused. We were dealing with a single Dwarven bar keep (male) in the Bark & Byte, then you switched over to plurals (they/their) to refer to scantily clad serve ring people.  Are we just dealing with 1 bar keep or did more staff appear?

Perhaps the paragraph introducing the bar wenches heading behind the bar was left out?

Re: OOC

I took that to mean the barkeep, as a he/him, welcomed some patrons into his establishment, but after suffering Brant's steely stare, underwent an epic, existential crisis, fragmenting his ego into a multitude of selves, thus becoming they/them.
But... I may be reading into things.

Fixed first post to accurately reflect the barkeeper's preferred pronouns. They had not informed me of them at the time of that post.

Re: OOC

Ah.  It was an intentional “preferred pronoun” shift.  I’ve heard about such things being in vogue in NYC, some parts of California, and in many University settings, but was not expecting it to show up in a 1970s D&D module.  Thanks for the clarification.

I think Brant’s assessment of the situation must have hit closer to home.

Re: OOC

It seemed right. I don't know. I like to keep things fresh. The original Tegel Manor had a certain 70's quality to the humor, a bit Monty Python, a bit Benny Hill. I'm not entirely sure. I wasn't about to try to reproduce that when my tastes lie in other directions (absurdist/existentialist).

Just a reminder: purple text means I'm quoting another source -- but I've yet to quote Tegel Manor. That will probably have to wait until we get to the manor.

Well, now that you mention it, both.

I was asking about you personally. We all made introductions early on in this thread. I assume you've already read those.

As for Brant's background, yes, it would be good for him to share that when the time is appropriate. (Which is certainly not at the moment.)

Re: OOC

In reply to Ereth (msg # 467):
OK. I could probably cut/paste from others' posts. I played D&D in the early 80s, starting with basic, then advanced. Then I drifted to crpgs when home computers happened. Fast forward many years, I reconnected with my old DM and we started a 2+ year game on rpol. Recently, I was listening to a few actual play podcasts and felt the pull to get back into a game. Now I'm playing a few too many. I gravitate to OSR games because I appreciate the simplicity and less the videogamey superpowers.
This is my first time playing a fighter. Usually its a cleric or thief, so if I try to hide from an onslaught of cultists or try to turn something, that's why.

School/work: English degree --> technical writer --> ux designer.

Before English, I briefly studied Archaeology (but I couldn't handle the anthropomorphism) <-- sorry, poor jokey reference for The Host.

Re: OOC

To clarify, Tegel is a bit Monty Python, not in MP's absurdist tendencies, which I enjoy, but in its silliness. You'll see that in some of the word choice: "Derfingel Swamp" and the "Rumps." One of its characters is absolutely drawn from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. And perhaps others I've yet to read about.

Re: OOC

I love all things Monty Python, so I welcome such elements in the game.

I'm trying to think which Holy Grail character might make a good scene/encounter for Tegel Manor.

The vorpal bunny (aka the "Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog") probably makes the most sense. But you could also have a creepy old bridge keeper guarding the moat crossing, or a black knight guarding the entrance to the manor, or a hideous beast living in caves beneath the manor. You could even have Tim the Enchanter be the force behind the dark magic affecting the manor and the town.

Ooh, maybe we'll get lucky and run into Zoot and the girls from Castle Anthrax. Spankings for everyone!

Re: OOC

GALAHAD: Zoot!

DINGO: No, I am Zoot's identical twin sister, Dingo.

GALAHAD: Oh, well, excuse me, I--

DINGO: Where are you going?

GALAHAD: I seek the Grail! I have seen it, here in this castle!

DINGO: Oh, no. Oh, no! Bad, bad Zoot!

GALAHAD: Well, what is it?

DINGO: Oh, wicked, bad, naughty Zoot! She has been setting alight to our beacon, which, I have just remembered, is grail-shaped. It's not the first time we've had this problem.

GALAHAD: It's not the real Grail?

DINGO:

[sigh]

[clunk]

Oh, wicked, wicked Zoot. Oh, she is a naughty person and she must pay the penalty, and here in Castle Anthrax, we have but one punishment for setting alight the grail-shaped beacon: you must tie her down on a bed and spank her.

GIRLS: A spanking! A spanking!

DINGO: You must spank her well, and after you have spanked her, you may deal with her as you like, and then, spank me.

AMAZING: And spank me.

STUNNER: And me.

LOVELY: And me.

DINGO: Yes. Yes, you must give us all a good spanking!

GIRLS: A spanking! A spanking! There is going to be a spanking tonight!

DINGO: And after the spanking, the oral sex.

GIRLS: The oral sex! The oral sex!

GALAHAD: Well, I could stay a bit longer.

Re: OOC

@ the Host.

We all had drinks in our hands, including Otis with the watermelon. The lone exception was Trevion the Abstainer, and I offered his drink to the barkeep, inviting "them" to join us, as Ornwin prepared to make a toast.

Did the barkeep decline the invitation? Did Otis decline his drink? Did you get tired of waiting for Ornwin to make a toast?

I really don't know what to do in the Village thread at this point since it seems a non sequitur has occured.

But I appreciate Brant's effort to plow through.

Edit: if I missed something, please feel free to straighten me out.
