Re: The House of the Occult

OOC: If I understand the posed calculations correctly, I think Ornwin must have killed the SGR he was fighting. If so, he will move on.

Not wanting to find out what happens when the King Rat blows, Ornwin steps up  and swings his battlexe at the bulging creature. However, he does not adjust accurately to the change of target and misses.

OOC: Ornwin rolls 3 on 1d20+1 miss.

22:40, Today: Rasxif rolled 10 using 1d6+4.  Damage (if needed).

Re: The House of the Occult

At long last, Rasxif butchers the last of the still conscious members of the rat king's court.

At long last, King Rat takes his first full breath of the day, which is necessarily prefaced by the expulsion of the day's pent up gasses. Having expelled these gasses, King Rat rises from his throne, much relieved, and prepares to indulge in some clawing and biting.

These gasses are redolent of an eel stew that has stewed too long in its own juices, an intimacy to both be feared and envied.

Save vs. Breath Weapon for half damage.
17:00, Today: The Host rolled 10 using 4d5.  Breath weapon.
Yes, the gas would have killed the last of the fighting rats if the gnome had missed again.

King Rat (Albino): AC 6 - uninjured.

Re: The House of the Occult

Cass is repulsed by the King Rat's belch. She feels sick and nauseated but looks around to see if anyone has fallen from the blast who might need immediate healing.

She rushes to Rasxif, casts a Cure Light Wound on him, and says "color spray the king rat while you still can!"

Cassandra rolled 12 using 1d20.  Save vs Breath Weapon. FAILED. 10hp damage?

Cass casts a CLW on Rasxif for 4hp, he is either at 3hp or 8hp depending on his save roll vs breath weapon.

Re: The House of the Occult

Archonia was still breathing lightly after the golden flakes, and did not inhale as much of the rat’s exhalation.
Hence she was nauseated, but not fallen. But staying would no doubt cause her to become a casualty, so she exited the room. If she could throw daggers at the rat as she departed before the others engaged it in melee, she would do so.

(ooc)
Natural 20, so saved. 5 points of damage, yes?

14 and 3 to hit with the daggers.
If the 14 hit (ac:6), 1 point of damage. (The king is large, but I assume still in the s/m damage category, not the L category)

And there is one other meaningless roll in there, because I am on my phone and accidentally hit submit when backtracking.

Re: The House of the Occult

Since Ornwin had advanced within melee range of the King Rat, he suffered the worst from the creature's breath. He choked spasmodically, but despite his choking, Ornwin managed to avenge himself with vicious blow into the King Rat's body.

OCC: Ornwin rolls 5 on 1d20 save vs. Breath Weapon.(17 needed) Failure. Following Cassandra's example, I assume he loses 10 points.

Revision: Since the GM allows an attack, Ornwin rolls 18 on 1d20+1 attack with battleaxe on King Rat, followed by 8 on 1d8+1 damage.

Re: The House of the Occult

As the guests had surmised, the head of this superior giant rat kingdom hadn't been making the best decisions with respect to his diet, regularly choosing foods high in fats and sugars. Jellied eels. Stewed eels. Eel tartare. Also had they surmised that this feral ruler rarely sauntered more than a scepter's length from its throne of filth and lucre. Dancing to its inner conger, it might have been; nonetheless, the wages of eels and indolence is death, meted out by the guests from Tegel Village.

Your Rat King reminds me of the one in J.B.S. Haldane's story "Rats" which I have been very fond of since I was young. I think it is a clever modernization of one of the "Jack Tales" in which Jack is the youngest of three brothers who seek their fortune. https://dn790004.ca.archive.or...B.S.Haldane/rats.pdf

The chair of silver and gold might be a bit difficult to bring out of here, but perhaps it could be smashed and the pieces taken- gold is gold, no matter the form.

Archonia went and ensured all the sleeping rats were dispatched. The breath probably did in all that Cassandra and she had not already stabbed, but best to make certain.

Ornwin eyed the gold and silver with typical dwarven fascination and said, "Well, gold and silver are always worth having, wherever we find them and whatever we have to kill to get them. If this takes care of the rats' lair, where do we go from here?"

Re: The House of the Occult

In Brant's inestimable manner, expressed in this instance by going right for the gizzards and innards where he knows the true treasures are to be found, he makes a discovery: the lining of the gas bag's stomach proves invulnerable to the heartiest of his carvings. The long intestine, for that matter, proves remarkably malleable (and far, far longer than it should have been with the space provided), offering no resistance to his ministrations. Why he could tie a bow with it! He could mummify Cassandra if they were so inclined! The small intestine's no slouch, either.

"Hmmm. The prodigious size of this stomach might provide a handy way to transport the coins."

Brant attempts to fill the stomach with coins and then drag it out of the rats' lair.

Re: The House of the Occult

To Brant's happy surprise, parts of the dead rat king's intestinal system double as a stomach lining of holding, leaving him and the others to shovel in as much gold and silver as their new set of traveling guts can hold.

As for the large intestine, he's not immediately sure which purposes it might ultimately serve.

OOC The bag's specifications are as follows: Type II -- Weight 25 lbs -- Capacity 500 lbs-- Capacity 70 cubic feet.
50 GP weighs ~ 1 lb.
I'll leave the rest of the math to you to calculate how much you can haul out of the lair. If you're encumbered, how do you plan to climb out of the tunnels?

Re: The House of the Occult

All 20000 gold and 5000 of the silver can fit in the stomach (500 lbs = 25000 coins), and the stomach weighs only 25lbs?

If so, and the rats are disposed of, the remaining silver (28000, minus however much we carry out in backpacks, ordinary sacks, etc.) should be safe enough left down here for us to return during a second trip. (If lost, it is only a fraction of what we do bring out, so a small loss comparatively.)

If encumbrance is an issue climbing out, I would recommend whoever is not encumbered and the person with the stomach go out first, dump the 5000sp topside, then come back down and collect the rest of the silver the remainder of us carry.
We then load everything back up again and depart.

Starting with the gold coins, Brant will fill up the stomach, tying it off with the intestines. With Ornwin's assistance, they will push/pull it up the rat tunnel to TM proper and out to the cart. Wash/rinse/repeat until all the coins are moved or until our backs give out.
