Weird how the Quick Start rules are so different than the full rules set. I can roll instead.

thanks, yeah, i haven't used the quikstart rules, but i know many systems have done that to sell players on a game world or setting

Re: Out of Character chat

so, i meant to mention this earlier, i am all for your characters' stats backing the characters' story. so let me know how it goes and i will work out tweaks when and where needed. feel free to discuss characters openly here. we are all in this together and i feel that we should be able to build a good group. that means working out our issues here, even if its just a matter of what clothes to wear to your dinner date with Cthuhlu.

Re: Out of Character chat

I tend to play my characters as fresh faced types, unfamiliar with the mysteries of the Elder Gods. (Or whatever the conceit of the system is.)

I have played in a few games where people tend to play characters as far more advanced, I like to think I could be used as blank canvas, for both the other players, and the GM to use a a target for exposition.

I have written Jason as a veteran of the trenches who wants to be a writer. As such, I would like at least a small bump to my education stat.

I also have him having been an athlete, and he has the strength to back that up, but poor dex, so I might add an injury from the war to explain that, maybe causing him to stray from an original dream of playing baseball.

I have power, constitution and appearance each also below fifty.

I think the low power could be the result of living thru the horrors of war. He has what would today be called PTSD, so his grasp on normal reality is damaged without even having heard of the darkness we will soon encounter.

The low constitution could stem from the German use of mustard gas, which damaged a lot of men.

The low appearance could be from a war wound as well I guess.

Without a single stat above seventy though, he is certainly in the running for secondary character in this tale, at best.

Out of Character chat

Wow! I apply this morning on the way to work and when I get home, not only have I been accepted, but there's a vocal community already! Nice! And thanks for having me onboard. To the Dice Roller!...

EDU : 55 (11)
INT : 12 (60)

POW : 15 (75)
APP : 15 (75)
Luck: 11 (55)

STR : 12 (60)
CON : 15 (75)
SIZ : 11 (55)
DEX : 9  (45)

That...is remarkably accurate to the character I had in mind and there's three 15's in there; that's nothing to complain about. I'm fairly speechless! For reference, here's the pitch I gave the GM

Me:
Name: Dafydd Taliesin Morgan
Nationality: Welsh
Age: 26
Profession: Drifter
Brief Background: A conscientious objector to the Great War, Dafydd ("Dai" to his friends or "Taff" to everyone else) ran away to the United States to escape the recrimination and accusation of his peers, only to find similar ostracism wherever he went. From hardy mining stock, Dai is strong and tough, if a little staid in thought and has found work doing honest manual labour for whatever anyone will pay; whether it be on the railroads, in a carnival or anything in between.

It feels somehow right that an Objector would have high POW. A sort of "I may not be smart and I may not be all that strong or possessing of grace, but I know my own mind and I'll not be moved once my mind is set" kind of character. Being pretty helps too; the ladies must just dig the accent!

@Jason: High stats does not a protagonist make! Just because the dice roller may have been cruel, doesn't mean your character can't or won't be the lynchpin of the entire saga.

And his low stats are at least close to average...I have 3 that are, well, not :)

that is a good way to look at it. but, i will look over the back story and the stats and see how it aligns. i don't think it will be super detrimental actually, but i don't want to lead you into a festival of non-enjoyable game play either.

@GM I'm happy to stick with my rolls as they are, but if I could request one change, can I switch DEX and SIZ? Dai is already a little under average height with a SIZ 55, but I feel like being noticeably small (SIZ 45) fits well with his heritage. If not, no drama! :D

stick with it for now. i don't think it will be that much of a detriment. remember the action in a play by post setting is set more in the RP and storyline than based in the mechanics at the table. things move more slowly in play by post the narrative drives initiative and choice of action more than mechanics and probability.

In reply to Jason Richmond Witherspoon (msg # 27):

that would depend on the specifics of your wartime experience. there were times during the great war that shock people when they learn what went on between the opposing troops. besides that America came into the war pretty late, i you weren't serving in an allied army before we entered the war then your experiences may have been very limited.

Oh no, don't get me wrong, I'm not looking to mitigate the low(ish) DEX so much as to  simply have a low SIZ because it fits my image of the character better! No drama though, I'll stick with my rolls as is.

I feel like I want my experience to be a reflection of my low POW, which implies to me a pretty rough time. The Lost Batallion, and all that. Certainly there was plenty of time to see the horrors of trench warfare, and most of the nice stories of the two sides finding commonality, like playing football (soccer) come from before the US entered.

the were times when US troops went into action without real wartime experience and had to overcome the treacherous rigors of combat facing experienced troops. it makes more of a difference than most people will ever know.

having to face gas, trench fighting, artillery barrages, digging out from collapsed redoubts, tunnel fighting, flamethrower assaults, crossing no-man's land under machine gun fire, snipers, aerial bombardment, sickness, trench life, dealing with casualties, removing corpses and parts of bodies, rats, lack of sleep, bad water, and so on in a short period of time, but often for prolonged periods of time made soldiering in the great war horrific without the supernatural.

now, if you saw a dead man rise, again and again, to kill others........

Seriously crappy rolls on the dice roller, but that's what the gods give you. Taking the low of 5 into account, I'm going to add a big detail to his background. He was a physician in the Great War and he managed to get gassed -- accounts for his 5 CON and 8 STR. He coughs a lot and tires very easily.

2d6+6 for
Education: 15
Intelligence: 17
Size: 11

3d6 for
Luck: 13
Power: 14
Appearance: 10
Dexterity: 10
Constitution: 5
Strength: 8

I'll rework his char sheet with the new 7th edition layout

I was gassed a swell, maybe we crossed paths on the battle field, or in the hospital.
