"Welcome again to class," said Mr. Rivera.  "And how are all of you today?  We've got a new student joining us today..."

A young woman stood up next to him; she had a short mop of unruly yellow-brown hair, and was dressed very cheaply, in torn jeans and a dirty white hoodie...

...and she was glaring at Garnet.

Rania looked at the new girl quizzically.

"No way!" Garnet said.

"Hello," she said.  "I'm Banji.  I'm... not used to being in a school.  I hope we all get along."

Yep, she was still looking a lot at John and Garnet.

Yasmin felt kinship with wild dogs; they were close to the hyenas her family was associated with.  (She didn't need an introduction as far as that went; her sense of smell was quite adequate for the purpose.)  She gave Banji a warm smile.

"Why is the dog here?" Garnet whispered to John.

"...I think she just figured out how to turn into a human," John whispered.  "I think she's one of the dogs that runs with us sometimes, too..."

"Lovely," Garnet said.

John shrugged.

"I mean, it's a big accomplishment," he said.  "But she's probably not good at being human."

"What is she?" Rania whispered to you.

"Yeah, but she might be after me," Garnet said.

"A dog," said Yasmin.  "Or something like that.  But, uh, yeah, pretty sure, dog."

"Maybe," said John.  "...but, I mean, she's a dog.  You're a dragon.  What's she going to do?"
