High school.  A terrifying experience full of horrific beings that would make the life of any they came across a pit of endless torment.

And this particular one had monsters in it, too.  A new school year was beginning...

Garnet yawned as she walked. Something had been off. Perhaps part of her hoard and fallen from the pile the night before. That was annoying. A hoard must be in pristine order to make sure the dragon sleeps correctly. Add in that this was the first day at a new school for her and things weren't shaping up well.

 Yasmin was a bit nervous about this new school business.  Not actually scared, of course-- she was a Ghul, and that didn't happen-- but uncertain.  Would she make friends?  Find someone to date?  Be able to get enough Meat to get by?  It was all uncertain.

"Hey there! Good morning!" a familiar voice called out.

"Oh, hi!" said Yasmin, cheerfully.  "How's it going, Rania?"

It was, of course, at that point that she collided with someone, knocking them over with an "Ooof!"

"I'm good. It's a beautiful day," Rania said. "How are you?"

"Hey! Watch where you're going!" Garnet snapped.

"Sorry, sorry!" said the young man, picking himself up off the ground.  "Totally my fault.  I spaced out looking at some stuff.  Are you all right?"

Behind her, someone snickered.

"All right, I guess," said Yasmin.  "Kinda nervous, though."

The beautiful day part wasn't so great for her, Ghuls being nocturnal.

"I'm sure you'll do fine," Rania said. "You're a great student."

"I'm fine," Garnet said, glancing at whoever was snickering.

"Good," said John.

Behind her, though, two awkward male students were whispering to each other.

"I saw them!" one said with glee.

"You are even more than me," said Yasmin.  "But I'm more nervous about the people stuff..."

"But you should be good there too. You're nice and friendly," Rania said.

"I suppose I can forgive you...this time," Garnet said.

"Uh, thanks," said John.  "I'm John Delgado..."

"Short skirts are just the best!" Garnet distinctly heard behind her.

"Well, maybe," Yasmin said.  "The problem is having to hide things from humans or else having our kind who don't think much of, you know.  Us."

"That's silly. I mean, you're not the only people eaters. Vampires are just overgrown mosquitos," Rania said.

"Garnet Greer," Garnet said and glared at the two boys.

"I know," sighed Yasmin, "but we don't have all the good press and romance.  And, um, what we do is a lot messier and more trouble.  I don't think dead humans have to figure in to a vampire's life at all."

"Aw, you're in trouble, MattOOOON!" one called. "She heard you!"

"And you," the other laughed.  "Hey, it's a girl.  I'm gonna look.  That's just how it is."

"They can easily kill one while feeding," Rania said. "But I'll stand with you if anyone tries anything."

"How about you two get lost?" Garnet said, anger clear in her voice.

"What?" said Mattoon.  "Why?  We're just talking.  Free speech, right?"

"Thanks," said Yasmin.  "I guess we'll see how it goes..."

"I'm right here with you," Rania said.

"Here's the fun bit, my dad's a lawyer so I know somethings" Garnet said with a smile as she cracked her knuckles. "You're free to say anything you like, but you're also going to get consequences for that as well."

"Geez. we're just joking around" protested one, but the pair backed off, muttering something about 'No fun.'

"Nicely done," said John.

Yasmin impulsively hugged her.

"Thanks," she said.

Rania hugged her back.

"Don't worry about it, we're friends."

"Thank you...hmmm, I guess I'm not annoyed with you anymore. You go to Mary Shelley High, right? Let's go," Garnet said.

"...Uh, all right," he said, and followed along after her.  Soon they were by the school building itself; some students were going in, while others loitered outside.

"So is there anything special that you want to do in high school?" Yasmin asked.  "Any special dreams?"

Rania blushed.

"M-maybe some dating. My parents used to tell me no dating until high school."

Garnet glanced about as she walked. Were any of these people possibly monsters?

"I'd like to do that, too," Yasmin admitted.  "I hope I can find someone nice... what kind of person are you looking for?"

It certainly seemed possible-- even likely.  But how could she tell?  That was the hard part.

I'm not sure yet, but I just like the idea of it," Rania said, quickly.

It was indeed. Garnet decided she was going to find her homeroom.

"That's fair," said Yasmin.  "I'm sure we'll get lots of chances... I wonder how many of these students are human?"

She sniffed the air.  Humans smelled different from a lot of other kinds of people.

...Oddly, John appeared to be taking every single turn that she did.  But soon enough, she was in her homeroom.

You do manage to catch the scent of a few monsters among the humans. Not a lot of them. it might be like forty or fifty to one.

"Are you in my class as well?" Garnet asked the boy.

"Looks like it," said John.  "Just lucky, I guess."

"...Okay, there's at least some of us here," said Yasmin.  "Hard to pick out who just by smell in a crowd like this, though.  Let's get to class."

She headed for her homeroom.

As you head to the classroom, a very tall boy seems to be following the two of you.

"Flattery is a good strategy," Garnet said.

"Good to know," said John.  He took out a book... not a textbook.  He appeared to be drawing or writing something in it.

Yasmin didn't say anything until they were in the classroom... he might just be going the same way.  But once she was there, she took a seat at the back of the class to see if he was going to introduce himself, or what.

The boy takes a seat in a desk and puts his feet up on the desk, his long legs going over to the next desk.

"What are you doing?" Garnet asked, trying to get a peek.

"Hm?" said John.  His angle made it hard for Garnet to see exactly what it was.  "Oh, I'm just doing some sketches.  Doodles.  I play around with it a little bit."

Yasmin frowned.  That was rude, but he wasn't doing it to her... she tried to get a sniff of him to see if he was human.  She doubted it.

No, the boy clearly wasn't human, in fact no one in the room was. Fully, anyway. The white girl was a human/monster hybrid.

"Can I see it?" Garnet asked.

Well... that made some things easier, she supposed.  She looked around to see if anyone else stood out to her.

He appeared reluctant, and was holding it at an angle that she couldn't see...

But you could always roll Persuasion, Intimidation, Deception, Sleight of Hand, etc.

A few more girls entered. A blonde girl who was looking around everywhere and a redhead who was dressed with several accessories, a beret and gave off heavy drama class vibes.

"Pleaaaaaase," Garnet said, giving him puppy dog eyes.

Yasmin smiled at them and gave a small wave.  New friends would be good.

John sighed, and handed it over.

...it was a sketchbook.  John hadn't just been doodling; he'd been drawing the people around him.  Including several studies of Garnet that suggested that he'd been watching her much more closely than she'd realized.

The two smiled and waved back, taking a seat near you and Rania.

"Wow!" Garnet said as she went over the drawings. "It's okay if you want to stare at me with art like that!"

John blinked in surprise, and then blushed a bit.

"Uh, thank you," he said.  "I've been practicing... are you sure you don't mind?"

"Hi!" said Yasmin.  "I'm Yasmin al-Jameel, and this is Rania Youssef."

"I'm Clair Wright and this is Cass Papageorgiou," the red head said, the blonde girl smiled.

"Not for art like this. This is really flattering," Garnet said.

"...So I'm a ghul," said Yasmin, quietly.  "Rania's a sphinx..."

She left it waiting for them to respond.

"Uh, thanks," said John.  "...actually, would you like to model for me sometime?"

"How could you tell?" Cassandra asked, confused.

"Modeling, huh? Sure, why not?" Garnet said.

"Smell," said Yasmin.  "We're especially good at sniffing out humans.  And, well, you two... and the rest of this class, for that matter."

John was clearly quite surprised at this.

"Hey, great!" he said.  "Cool.  Let's talk over lunch or something..."

"It's so good of you to do that," came a voice from behind.  "Shame you have to settle for her, but one does have to have standards."

"Are you a dog?" Cassandra asked, excitedly.

Garnet turned around and glared at the person.

"Excuse me?"

"Ah, sorry," said Yasmin.  "No.  I'm a Ghul, like I said.  Although we have kind of a little bit of kinship to hyenas..."

It appeared to be an annoyingly beautiful, polished girl with a noble manner.

"Oh, I'm sorry," she said.  "That came out wrong.  Obviously, for those willing to be a model for... that kind of thing, you're certainly the prettiest choice he could find."

Cassandra nodded, but clearly didn't understand.

"What's your problem?" Garnet asked, crossing her arms.

"Problem?" said Daphne.  "What are you talking about?  I was complementing you."

"...Um, what are you?" she asked.  It was worth a shot, right?

"I'm a siren," Cassandra said.

"I'm sure," Garnet said, rolling her eyes.

"Good, we understand each other," said Daphne.  "And my place.  And your place."

"Oh, all right," said Yasmin.  That was fine.  Sirens were, she vaguely recalled, predators on humans.  She could relate, even if Ghuls only rarely hunted live ones.

"And your friend?"

"She's a Dullhand!" Cassandra said.

"Dullahan ," Clair said.

"I doubt you do, since you're here talking to me," Garnet said.

"...I think you missed the point of the conversation," she sighed.  "Well, you'll figure it out.  Or you won't, and be very, very sorry."

"Oh, with the head coming off?" said Yasmin.  She vaguely recalled that part.  "That's interesting.  Are you undead, or some kind of spirit being?"

"I'm fey. I'm not sure where the humans got the idea we're undead," Clair said.

"The point where you implied I'd drop my clothes at the drop of a hat or when you called me an idiot?" Garnet asked.

"Oh, Fey!  Like a type of djinn from Europe," said Yasmin.  "That's so cool!"

"Ah, well, I suppose you're getting the hang of this, then," she said, smiling charmingly.  "By the by, your boyfriend, there, is looking like he wants to throw a desk at me or something.  You can handle stopping him, can't you?  A shame if I had to.  He might get in so much trouble..."

"Thanks. What about you, Rania?" Clair asked.

"I'm a sphinx," she said.

"Cool stuff."

"I can handle myself," Garnet said. "I'm not some trollish bimbo."

"Yes," said Yasmin.  "Let's all be friends, all right?"

"Not a troll, no," Daphne agreed.  "But can you handle him if he loses control again?  So awkward..."

"Sure, sounds good to me," Clair said as Cassandra nodded vigorously.

Garnet laughed.

"I think I could, yes."

"So, does anyone know what the teacher will be like?" Yasmin asked.  "I think this has to be a special class for our kind..."

Daphne gave her a measuring look.

"...You might make things interesting," she finally said.  "Not quite what I expected... well, we'll see if you can measure up.  You might surprise me, I suppose."

"You're probably right since you figured us out," Clair said. "As for the teacher; I have no idea."

"Trust me, I'm far from ordinary," Garnet said.

"But in this room, who is?" the girl asked.  "Or haven't you noticed?"

"I guess we'll find out," said Yasmin.  "So, are you from, um, families of your kind?"

She was, but she'd gathered that her family was more the exception than the rule.

"I am," Clair said.

"I have a mom, never met my dad. I haven't seen mom for a long time," Cassandra said.

"How can I notice anything when you've been bothering me nearly from the start?" Garnet asked.

"And so distractible," the girl sighed, shaking her head in mock sadness.  "Well.  How good are your eyes?  My nose doesn't fail me..."

"Aw, that's so sad!" said Yasmin.  "I'd invite you over for dinner, but... um, we can't really share most of our food.  It's in very short supply."

Cassandra nodded.

"Yeah, sharing food can be hard.

"Fine then," Garnet said, letting her full and majestic aura flare.

"What do Sirens eat?" Yasmin asked, curious.  Meat was certainly hard to come by, but not everyone needed it...

That got gasps, stares, people turning to look at Garnet even more.  Daphne took an involuntary step back.

"Well," she said.  "Crude.  Clumsy.  But real power, nevertheless.  What are you?"

"Meat. Lots of meat," Cassandra said. "I like meat. Can't eat people anymore. We used to."

Garnet snorted, shooting out a small bit of flame.

"Half-dragon."

Yasmin nodded.

"We... don't have a choice about that," she said.  "But we don't like it fresh all that much, which helps a little.  We don't have to... hunt."

A loud voice came from behind them.

"If you two are through being disruptive?  And please be careful with the fire."

"Ah, must be hard," Clair said.

Garnet jumped and looked back.

"There's some accommodations made for us around here, luckily," said Yasmin.  "But still, we've got a fairly big family.  And three of us are still growing, so, you know... it can be tricky."

A teacher had entered the room while everyone was talking.  He was tall, with a beard and long hair, quite muscular and with a very strong presence.

"Thank you," he said.  "Now, be seated, everyone."

He did something to the door; a strange symbol on it glowed for a moment.

"I am Mr. Rivera, your homeroom teacher," he said.  "I am a skin-changer-- a werewolf.  There's a large community of us in this town, living unseen among human.  Needless to say, we're at great risk if humans find out about nonhumans living here, and that's why I want to start off by explaining that I expect all of you to be very discreet about doing anything that would reveal your true nature."

He might have been glaring at Garnet and Daphne; perhaps not.

"This class, of course, is made up of students who are not human," he continued.  "You are, by extension, part of this community-- the nonhuman community.  We all have to rely upon each other, from time to time, so I'd like for each of you to introduce yourselves to the others, and explain, and if possible, reveal your true nature to the other students.  Miss Greer has already started, I see, so why don't you continue and introduce yourself properly?"

"Ack! Teacher!" Clair said, turning around quickly.

Garnet stood up.

"My name is Garnet Greer. I'm half-dragon. My father moved us here from Los Angeles. I haven't had much of a chance to explore the city yet. I enjoy collecting...uh, I mean I like reading and doing urban exploration."

Yasmin straightened up and paid attention.  It was still a bit odd, seeing a male as an authority figure (and not a human!) but she'd get used to it, she was sure.

"Better," said the teacher.  "Next?"

John stood up.

"I'm John Delgado," he said.  "I'm a werewolf, too.  And, uh, an aspiring artist, I guess."

"And a good boy," Garnet whispered to him and chuckled.

"A lot of very western ones," Rania whispered to you.

It seemed to be Yasmin's turn; she stood up.

"I'm Yasmin al-Jameel... that's not my full name, but it's quite long.  I'm a Ghul, just like the rest of my family.  We moved into town over summer after leaving Persia... that is, Iran, which isn't a very safe place for us any more.  I enjoy listening to all kinds of music."

John grinned awkwardly at that.

And so it continued on until everyone was done.

...Daphne, it appeared, was a vampire.  And she acted like her name was one that everyone should know.

Worse, it seemed like much of the class did know that name.

"Pretty popular for an overgrown mosquito," Garnet said.

"...dear me," said Daphne.  "Descending to that kind of insult already?  That's quite sad, you know.  It reflects poorly on you.  Are there other classmates you don't approve of the heritage of?  Will you be giving us a list?"

"Hey, you started this," Garnet said.

"Hey, you said you were a ghoul, I mean, a ghul, right?" a girl you remembered was named Yumi leaned over to you and asked.

"And who descended to THAT kind of insult?" said Daphne.  "Really, it's sad.  You can't even make a good personal insult, and have to insult an entire breed of people.  You do that all the time, don't you?"

"That's right," said Yasmin.  "Did you have a question or something...?"

"I heard you mention 'meat'. Did you and your family know about the Sweet Water Café?" Yumi asked.

"Hey, vampires get to be like monster royalty, don't try that!" Garnet said.

"No," said Yasmin.  "What is it?"

"But you're a dragon," Daphne pointed out.  "Wealth and power, isn't it?"

"It's a place that helps out monsters that need to eat humans," Yumi said.

"Oh please, not all of us can even afford to hoard wealth," Garnet said. "I'm also a half-dragon. This is as big as I get."

"That might be... really good for us," Yasmin admitted.  "Um, where is it?  How do you get in?"

"...And now I feel bad for you," said Daphne.  "Well, go on and get enjoyment out of your life as best you can, then."

"It's on the corner of Elm and 3rd street," Yumi said. "Just go there and ask for a danish, a cookie and a special blend coffee."

"I don't need pity from some stuck up vampire!" Garnet said.

"No?" said Daphne.  "But you rise to the bait so very, very well..."

"Thank you!" said Yasmin.  "...I hope it's not too expensive.  I know it's a lot of trouble to get."

She knew that very, very well, in fact.

"Oh, they don't charge. Well, other than the cost of the danish and stuff," Yumi said.

Garnet slammed her hands down on her desk and growled.

Yasmin relaxed a bit.

"That's good," she said.  "I wonder if they're hiring, or can do something else for us, or us for them?  We're very close to the need for Meat, closer than many."

The teacher cleared his throat.

"No violence in class," he said.  "And no unveiling the curtain at school, for that matter."

"I haven't heard. My neighbour runs the place," Yumi said.

Garnet grumbled and crossed her arms.

"I'll have to ask, then," said Yasmin.  "Do your kind also have to eat Meat?"

John scooted over.

"...She's good at getting under your skin," he observed.  "Touchy subjects?"

"Nah, but my neighbour does. He's a Jikininki," Yumi said. "And set up the cafe and it's network to help."

"A bit, yeah," Garnet said.

17:31, Today: Yasmin rolled 8 using 1d20+2 ((6)).

"Oh, nice," said Yasmin.  "Um, what's a Jikininki?"

"She's baiting you," said John.  "Maybe ignore her for now.  Dragons are cooler than vampires, anyway."

"A type of human eating spirit from Japan mostly," Yumi said.

"Thanks. So, um, are you doing anything later?" Garnet asked.

"I didn't have any major plans," said John.  Then stopped, processing what she said.

"...what did you have in mind?" he managed.

"Oh, interesting!" said Yasmin.  "I wonder if we're distant cousins?"

"I don't really know. I'm not well versed on monsters outside of Japan," Yumi said.

"A date or something?" Garnet asked.

"Maybe I'll ask," said Yasmin.  "...probably not, but hey, it's possible."

That clearly took him off guard.  He swallowed, but--

"Uh, yes," he said.  "Absolutely.  Let's do that.  What do you want to do for it?"

"I can take you there after class," Yumi said.

"I'm new here. I don't know what's good. I'll let you pick," Garnet said.

"That would be great, thanks!" said Yasmin.

"Uh, we could go get something to eat," said John.  "That's usually a good start."

"Don't worry about it," Yumi said.

"Sure, what's good here?" Garnet asked.

"...I wonder how many other students will have that kind of requirement?" Yasmin wondered.  It surely wasn't that common.  There were too many humans on the planet still!

"Uh, let's see," said John.  "I know where there's a really good Mexican place..."

"Probably not any. There aren't many that need to, but lots that could," Yumi said.

"That sounds good," Garnet said.

"That's probably better," said Yasmin.  "There's only so much Meat to go around, and my family is six people anyway..."

"Okay," said John.  "So, uh, let's do it, then."

Was the teacher looking at her oddly?  He didn't say anything, at least...

"The cafe'll help how they can," Yumi said.

"Sure," Garnet said.

"I really hope so," said Yasmin.  And the day was ending.

They got ready to head out.  Had Garnet actually had Mexican food before...?

"I have something to do, so I'll text you later," Rania said as she headed off home.

She had, looking over at John.

Yasmin was curious, but she had a cafe to get to...

They went out...

Rania was waiting for you at the usual place and waved to you.

Garnet headed off.

"Hey!" Yasmin said, running up to her and hugging her.  "How are you doing today?"

"Not bad, I was up a little too late last night reading some fanfiction," Rania said.

"Anything good?" Yasmin asked.  "What was it?"

There was a large dog out for a run nearby.  It probably wasn't important.

"Nothing too spectacular. It's hard finding the good stuff sometimes," Rania said.

Garnet shrugged and continued.

Perception again

"Well, that's kind of how it can go when anybody who can type can publish," said Yasmin.  "You get the good and the bad."

"I agree, just makes it annoying having to shift through it all," Rania said.

...the dog was definitely following her.

"That's the problem," Yasmin agreed.  "So, got anything special planned today?"

"Not really. What do you have planned?" Rania asked.

Garnet walked towards it.

"Planning is for those who don't live in the moment!" Yasmin proclaimed.  "...seriously, not sure yet.  Depends on how things go."

The dog was, quite confidently, walking towards her.  It also appeared to be staring at her...

"Ah. Should we investigate that cafe?" Rania asked.

"Now then, what is this?" Garnet said.

"That sounds like a really good idea," said Yasmin.  "I really ought to see how often I can buy some Meat there."

"Uh, what is what?" said John, from directly behind her.

"Sure, I'm up for that," Rania said.

"This doge was following me," Garnet said.

"Then let's go together after school!" said Yasmin, smiling.  Part of her wanted to judge Rania's reaction.  Sphinxes didn't need Meat, did they...?

"I don't see--" John started, but then:

"Oh, there!" he continued.  "...ran off really quickly, there.  Are you sure that was a dog?  I got a vibe that wasn't all dog..."

"Sure, they do have some normal stuff, right?" Rania asked.

"One of yours?" Garnet asked.

"...I don't think that was any relative of mine," said John.  "But, uh, it's a big world."

"Oh, sure!" said Yasmin.  "It's really good, too."

"Sounds good then," Rania said.

"Then I'm not sure what's going on then," Garnet said.

The dog was staring at John... then looked at Garnet and barked, savagely.

"...I'd say definitely a wolf-dog cross," said John.  "And also supernatural, from the smell.  Like, part werewolf, maybe?"

"It's a date, then!" said Yasmin, cheerfully.

"Sure," Rania said, turning away for a second.

"I don't think he likes me," Garnet said. "At least I have one canine who does."

"'She,'" John corrected.  The dog ran up, licked John's hand, snarled at Garnet, and attempted to leave.

Now, what was all that about?  But it couldn't possibly be significant.  Probably something Rania had eaten that morning.

"Let's get going!" said Yasmin, brightly.

Insight rolled a 1....

"Sure," Rania said.

Garnet let the dog, but leaned over and gave John a kiss on the cheek.

"Not that I'm complaining," said John, "but were you just... making a point to that dog?"

He considered.

"...I'm fine with that," he added.

Yasmin took Rania's hand and ran to school!

"Since you said there was magic, I figured it might have been a spy for someone," Garnet said.

"Could be," said John.  "Seemed to be focused on you, no matter what."

"Yep, not sure who'd do that. Except maybe the vampire," Garnet said.

"Yeah, but why lick me, then?" said John.  "It's weird."

"Good question. Do werewolves have any animal control?" Garnet asked.

"Kind of?" said John.  "But not really like that.  We'd have to be right there directing the dog."

"Hmm. Well then, wanna follow the dog?" Garnet asked.

"...I can try, but it took off pretty fast," said John.  "You up for a chase?"

"Let's go!" Garnet said.

They took off!

Garnet grappled the dog.

The dog yelped in protest; it looked like some people were starting to turn to look, though.

"Don't mind me, just getting my dog," Garnet said before fleeing with it.

It was fortunate that Garnet was strong; the dog was a handful!  And it was growling and snapping at her, too.

"Hush, you," Garnet said,

She was going to have to do something, though.  The dog was trying to bite...

Garnet took the dog down an alleyway.

Once out of sight, the dog struggled in her arms, breaking free.  It was suddenly growing...

Garnet watched.

It was now taller than she was, and semi-bipedal.  Strange patterns were in its fur-- this was indeed a dog-creature, not a wolf-creature, but what a strange thing it was!  It was still snarling...

...it looked female, from hints that Garnet could see.

"Hey, whoa whoa, I'm not looking for a fight. I just want answers," Garnet said.

"Chased me," she snarled in an inhuman, bestial voice.  "Attacked me.  Not looking to fight?  Liar."

"No, I just wanted to know what you are and what your deal is," Garnet said.

"You attacked me!  Liar!" she repeated, and she looked like she was getting ready to either run or fight.

"I just picked you up," Garnet said. "I'm sorry if I hurt you, I didn't mean to. I just want some answers."

"No!" the dog snarled.  "See what you are.  See how you treat others.  No!  You get NOTHING!"

"Fine then" Garnet said, starting to head back to school.

"So, uh, what happened?" John asked.  He was panting from running after her.

"The dog got all pissy because I picked her up and took her to an alley. Turns out she can turn into a humanish form and talk," Garnet said.

"...I think she thought you were attacking her," said John.  "Not saying that you were, but she might have freaked out over that."

"I'm not sure why, I mean, people pick dogs up all the time," Garnet said.

"Not feral dogs, though," John said.  "Pretty clear that that's what we've got here."

"Really? In the city?" Garnet asked.

"Absolutely," said John.  "Basically every city ever has feral dogs."

"I didn't know that," Garnet said.

"Yeah, we run into them a whole bunch," said John.  "Some even try to run with us when we, you know... let it all out during the full moon."

"Heh. If you encounter that dog again, could you try smoothing things out?" Garnet asked, before realizing. "We had better get to school."

"Sure," said John.  "Yeah, let's hurry!"

They ran!

Garnet ran as fast as she could.
