They soon arrived at a restaurant.  Well, it wasn't much of one to look at, though-- a little place in a strip mall with what appeared to be cafeteria seating and a counter one, presumably, ordered food at.  But the smells!  They were amazing...

"It does smell good in here," Garnet said.

"Yeah, you can get the good, real stuff here," said John, moving towards the counter.  "What would you like?"

"I'll have a burrito and two pork tacos. I'll have a diet cola to drink," Garnet said.

"What do you want in your burrito?" the worker asked.

"The usual, ground beef, cheese, chilis," Garnet said.

They assembled the food for her.  It indeed smelled excellent, if fiery; it also appeared to be quite large portions.  John, she noted, was also getting a lot of food.  Perhaps werewolves needed it.

She wasn't going to judge, she ate more food than her small frame would indicate.

"Do you like spicy stuff?" John asked.  "They probably didn't go all-in on heat for you."

"It's okay," Garnet said. "I've had much worse when it comes to heat."

"If you like it, let them know and they can crank it up," said John.  "Want to try a little of mine to see what I mean?  It's pretty hot, though.  Don't do that if you don't like it."

Garnet leaned over to try some.

Indeed, it was hot.  Very hot.  Very, very, very hot.  Did humans really like stuff this hot?

"Is that the spiciest they make it?" Garnet asked, drinking her pop.

"No," said John.  "It's just as hot as I like it.  I'm not trying to be super-tough about it."

"I like it! My dad was always too wimpy to serve spicy food like this," Garnet said.

"Yeah, well, there's some pride going on here," said John.  "It's the whole Tex-Mex thing that's in back of the werewolf community in these parts."

"Oh?" Garnet asked. "You have me curious now."

John shrugged.

"We're werewolves," he said.  "From Old Mexico-- Texas that was Mexico before a bunch of slavers stole it from Mexico.  So we get Texas machismo, Mexican machismo and Werewolf machismo, which is all way too much for the likes of me.  But I'm family, so they accept me, even if they don't get me."

Garnet chuckled.

"Interesting. That must be something."

"Well, we're all a big family," said John.  "It's just how we are... what's it like for you?  Do you have a family?"

"Just my dad," Garnet said. "He's one hundred percent mundane."

"So you were only raised by a human?" John asked.  "That sounds rough.  It's good for us to be able to teach each other how to handle transforming and everything."

"I don't think it was too bad. I do have to hide it from him, mom clearly never explained things to him," Garnet said.

"And he doesn't know about any of this?" John asked.  "That's got to be hard, sometimes..."

"I guess, but it's better for him," Garnet said.

"Yeah, but hard for you," said John.  "Do you have anyone who helps you be a dragon?  Teaches you how it works or anything?"

"No, but it's all pretty instinctual," Garnet said. "I think."

"That's good," said John.  "I guess dragons don't normally come in packs, huh?"

"No, we're solo creatures," Garnet said.

"But you're still pretty social," said John.  "Which I am glad for."

"It's not like I can really go make a lair in a cave or anything," Garnet said. "I don't get any bigger than this."

"The size you are is quite good," said John.  "And you don't need a lair in a cave, surely."

"Sure, but I can't turn into a full size dragon, just grow wings and a tail," Garnet said.

John paused.

"I seriously want to see that," he said.  "I mean, damn."

"My wings and tail?" Garnet asked.

"Absolutely," said John.  "...and how they attach, maybe.  I mean, I guess the tail, I know how those things attach.  I grow one.  But wings?  I've never gotten a close-up of anyone with wings."

"It can be hard, they tend to destroy my clothes," Garnet said.

John considered this.

"Do you have any backless clothes?" he asked.  "That might be useful for you."

"I guess, I find them a big embarrassing though," Garnet said.

"....well, I can see that," John conceded.  "I'll bet you'd look great in them, though."

"Tsk tsk. Being such a flatterer," Garnet said.

"Most people would call me a pervert at that point," said John, thoughtfully.  "But you know that you're hot."

"And dealing with two actual ones today," Garnet said.

"Those guys are embarrassing," sighed John.  "And also gross.  I wish we didn't have them around."

"There's not much we can do," Garnet said.

"Well, one thing," said John.  "Be better than them and have fun despite them."

"Good point. Is everyone in your family a werewolf?" Garnet asked.

"Everyone in my immediate family, yeah," said John.  "I have some human cousins and in-laws and stuff, though."

"What are they like? Your immediate family that is," Garnet said.

"Very working class," said John.  "I'm the odd one out-- I do art, instead of fixing cars and motorcycles.  My whole family works together running an auto shop."

"Interesting. I'd certainly like to meet them sometime," Garnet said.

"Uh, sure," said John.  "They're very... blue-collar.  Be ready for that.  So, I guess I should meet your father, too?"

"Eventually," Garnet said. "I've not really interacted with a whole family of monsters before. I'm really curious. Plus, you get to show off having a girlfriend."

"Well, there is that," John said, blushing a bit.  "I wouldn't mind that at all..."

"Good. I'm glad that's settled," Garnet said.

"...So what do you want to do now?" John asked, after they ate.

"A movie maybe?" Garnet said.

"Sounds good," said John.  "What kind of movie would you like to see?"

"Something simple. Maybe an action movie?" Garnet said.

"Yeah, I'm good with that," said John.  He got out his phone to look over the options.

"What's playing?" Garnet asked.

"Well, we've got Twin Tigers Two, Against the Galactic Overlord and Drift Masters," said John.  "Any preferences?"

"Hmm. Drift Masters sound good?" Garnet asked.

"Sure," said John.  "Much more likely to find someone in my family there.  Seriously into cars."

"Really? Any of them dating anyone?" Garnet asked.

"Yeah, both of my brother are," said John.  "I think I have a cousin around who's got a boyfriend, too."

"Let's see how it goes then. Werewolves and cars, huh?" Garnet asked.

"Yep," said John.  "I think it grows out of blue-collar werewolves, honestly."

"I guess you guys are the ones that caught the cars, huh?" Garnet asked and chuckled.

John raised an eyebrow at her.

"Sorry, I can be a real flame-brained dragon when it comes to puns and bad jokes," Garnet said.

That made John chuckle.

"We don't go in for car chasing anyway," said John.  "That's dogs.  We're wolves.  We catch what we chase."

"So, uh, do werewolves have any compulsions?" Garnet asked. "Like we do with hoarding..."

"Well, we howl at the moon," said John.  "And we can get kinda... you know... animalistic at times like that.  Full moons, I mean.  I do pretty well for self-control, though."

"Ah. Okay," Garnet said.

"...should I worry about the hoarding?" John asked.  "Or just plan on buying you stuff?"

"No, no, I'm not that bad," Garnet said.

"Well, luckily, I don't think I'm likely to want to borrow your stuff," said John.  "So no worries there."

"It's not for everything! Only one thing," Garnet said.

"What thing?" John asked, curious.

Garnet looked away so hopefully he wouldn't see her blush.

"Do I have to say?"

"Shiny and yellow?" John guessed.  "I mean, I don't actually know for sure..."

"No, it's different...," Garnet said. "Something girlier."

"...clothes?  Chocolate?" John guessed.  "Seriously no idea.  But if you tell me, maybe I can buy you presents sometime..."

Garnet sighed.

"...plushies..."

John started to say something, and then nodded.

"Okay, that's pretty normal," he said.  "I'll keep that in mind for your birthday... so, ready for the movie?"

"Yes, let's go," Garnet said.
