Battle 7: A Brutish Ambush

The party travels deep into the Hungry Mountains on the hunt for cannibal raiders.  Reaching the thorpe they had been directed to for more information, they find the raiders have beaten them to it: The settlement is a smoking, flattened ruin.  There's blood everywhere, but the only solid sign of the locals is a small pile of human skulls arranged in the middle of the crossroads.

Audrey and Delfrydydd are serviceable trackers at best, but the trail is easy enough to follow.  The killers were massive humanoids with footprints easily the size of a grizzly's paw, and somewhere between five to ten in number.  They didn't seem to be making any effort to hide their tracks.

By the time the party caught up to their prey the sun was low in the sky, and long dark shadows were starting to cloak the mountainside.  Reaching a crossroads, the tracks suddenly split apart in several directions, heading for the various nearby ridges and clumps of bushes.  Looking around at the scattered high ground and hiding places, the giant's reasoning seemed pretty obvious.  This was a nice spot for an ambush.

OOC: Everyone give me a perception check and an initiative roll, as well as a stealth check for anyone trying to be stealthy.  I'd also like a list of your pre-fight preparations (Anything lasting more than one hour is allowed.)  You can change your starting positions if you like, but nothing further north or west than Audrey's current position.

The ridges are 10' high, and can be climbed with a DC 15 climb check.  The vegetation is all spindly bushes: They're difficult terrain and provide cover, but can be seen over by any creature medium or larger.

As the treacherous landscape revealed its intention, Erisen moved with poised caution, each step deliberate amid the scattered footprints of giants. His eyes surveyed the terrain, noting the strategic high grounds and converging shadows. Drawing a steadying breath, he pressed a hand to his chest, whispering, "Scripted by stars and shadow's line, may our path in light still shine."

Del scanned the scrub and the ridges as the party arrived at the fork in their path. The half-elf marveled at just how perfect their current location was ripe for an ambush, "I don't think we need to worry about following the trail any more..."

Rik was still shocked and appalled by the scene in the town he was so distracted that he barely noticed anything around him. He hugged Mortimer close to his chest for comfort.
