Re: Battle 8: The Field of Honour

Most of Rik's targets were able to fend off the writhing, burning vegetation, at least for the moment. The summoned croc thrashed in panicked fury as the burning grass wrapped itself around it's legs.

OOC: Assuming its a DC 16 reflex save, that means the croc fails, while Navea, Kairoy, and Sinetal succeed.  Pan and Chiulu are too high up to be affected.

10:44, Today: Gorum rolled 23,18,16,9 using 1d20+3,1d20+6,1d20+3,1d20+5.  Reflex vs entangle: Sinetal, Navea, Raikoy, Croc.

Re: Battle 8: The Field of Honour

At the peeling of the bell, Del was slower to react than the rest of the arena. It might have been the disorienting effect of seeing himself mirrored 4 times. Regardless, when the dino-chicken appeared next to himselves all 5 of the half-elf swayed to avoid the creature's jaws.

Reacting on pure instinct, Del imposed his will on the creature forcing it to sleep, "Cwsg, chi cyw iâr, cysgu!". He then moved to the far side of the slumbering creature.

OOC:
Standard: slumber on Dorfan -failed- goodnight
Move: Q8 to P7

15:39, Today: Delfrydydd rolled 14 using 1d20+4.  dorfan, will save vs slumber, DC18.

Re: Battle 8: The Field of Honour

Struck by the kineticist's cold beam, Erisen's expression remained stoic, but a hint of annoyance flickered in his eyes, not from the attack, but the enemy's silent dismissal of his words. "Speaking no evil, are we?" he mused, a sardonic edge to his voice.

With that, Erisen reached for a vial at his belt, the potion of invisibility glinting briefly in his hand. "Well, I've always been more of a 'see no evil' kind of guy." He uncorked it smoothly and raised it to his lips, disappearing from view as he drank, his form blending seamlessly into the air around him, leaving only the echo of his presence in the fading light.

Re: Battle 8: The Field of Honour

Surrounded by crocodiles, Audrey lashed out with her magical shovel.  With a pair of mighty *CLANG*s, she send both beasts back to the realms from which they had been summoned.

Meanwhile, Chiulu responded to Erisen's trash talk with a disdainful snort. "I'd settle for hearing no evil, if it means I'd be spared from your attempts at wit." She retorted, speaking to the empty air Erisen had occupied merely a moment before.  With no way to target the invisible priest, she immediately turned her attention to the next most vulnerable looking foe.  "Kill that gunner first, then we can work on the others!" She called out to the rest of her party.  Swooping in close to follow her own instructions, she launched a bold of freezing magic at Delfrydydd, striking one of his illusory doubles.

Pan also went for Del, firing off a trio of regular arrows at the magus.  His handful of human-bane arrows had cost the hunter a small fortune, so he decided to save them until he could be sure he was shooting at the real thing.  One of the mundane arrows banished another mirror image, while the other struck a glancing blow against the magus.

Meanwhile Raikoy began to fire off a burst of magic missiles to soften Del further and wake up the sleeping Troodon.  But his defensive spell worked against him, and the projectiles fired harmlessly into the ethereal plane.  Muttering profanity under his breath, the arcanist resorted to using his flaming sphere as a wakeup call for his dinosaur ally.

Seeing Patagogi and Audrey dispatch the crocodiles, the druid and the Paladin decided to fall back.  As they pushed through the flaming vegetation, Sinetal called up an entangling spell of his own.  The long grass of the field quickly wrapped itself around Audrey and Dorfan, while Patagogi and Del remained free for the moment.

Woken up by the scorch of Raikoy's sphere, Dorfan leapt to his feet.  It snapped at Delfrydydd groggily, it's jaws failing to even connect with the magus' image.

OOC: I somehow missed Rik had gone invisible at the end of his turn, and had to change Ciulu and Pan's targets.  I'm using the same rolls, though Pan held off on using his human bane arrows. Also, I had to guess at Del's intended position, since P7 would put him in the same square as the dinosaur.

Audrey
FULL: Full attack vs Crocodiles.  Does 27 damage to croc 1 and 20 to croc 2, finishing it, doing exactly enough to unsummon both.

REACTION: Fail save vs entanglement

STANDARD: Pirahna strike bite vs delfrydydd.  Misses (doesn't even hit an image).

Re: Battle 8: The Field of Honour

As Del watching his illusionary doubles catch the opponent's ranged attacks, he felt the writhing grass under his feet grasp and reach at his legs. Before he did anything else, Del focused his attention on Chiulu flying overhead calling for his demise. With a sing-song voice he eyed her and willed them to sleep, "Ewch i gysgu, ewch i gysgu ast iâ fach yn hedfan..." Then taking advantage of Pat's earlier transmutation the half-elf nimbly moving out the spell's effect.

Re: Battle 8: The Field of Honour

Erisen, with the enemy's retort still hanging in the air, felt a sense of satisfaction. This was the dramatic tension he craved, a reaction that added layers to the physical duel. He believed drawing upon the very essence of conflict would strengthen the influence of the deeper forces he was aligned with. The silent confrontations were a chess game, but this – this was theatre.

He soared to a new vantage point, on the edge where animated plants trashed at each other. "From chaos's heart and abyss's cry, come forth the demon under this sky!" Erisen chanted with a theatrical flair, summoning a dretch from the depths of chaos. The demon materialized, its grotesque form a testament to the old accusations hurled at Erisen, now turned into a reality on the battlefield. That should get them angrier.

Surveying the field, Erisen’s eyes locked onto the three grounded opponents, entangled and vulnerable. A twisted grin formed on his lips as he commanded the dretch, "Let your stench seep into the tangled ones. Offer them a distraction from their struggles." The dretch, gleeful in its task, turned towards the entangled foes. With a guttural incantation, it unleashed a billowing cloud of noxious gas.

OOC:
Erisen:
  Move: Fly to G3 + 30'
Standard: Cast summon monster iii, losing sand whirlwind, summoning an Augmented Dretch with Improved Natural Armor at E2.

Dretch:
Standard: Cast Stinking Cloud SLA at C-D/8-9 intersection, covering Navea, Raikoy, Sinetal. Sineteal fails Fort Save DC13 and is nauseated until he leaves the cloud + 1d4+1 rounds. Others pass the save, for now.

Rolls:

Audrey ripped herself out of the plants with a scowl as she began moving closer, absently picking up her spare shovel once more as she moved and then planting it again beside her. She was grateful for the haste as every step was a bit of a bog, and she did her best to avoid the overlapping entanglement fields.

"Should have brought Shears, not shovels. Damned Casters." She mutters angrily as she storms forward.

Meanwhile Mortimer uses a potion on Rik to get him healed up. Mort isn't invisible so he flies a bit off to not give away Rik's position.

Re: Battle 8: The Field of Honour

Thanks to the affects of Erisen's spell, everyone could see into the gas cloud conjured up by his demonic minion.  Inside, they could see Navea struggling to free herself, before turning around to haul her druid friend free and all but throw him out of the cloud.  As the vegetation burned her, the paladin simply closed her eyes and willed her wounds to vanish.

Losing consciousness from Delfrydydd's hex, Chiulu dropped from the sky like a stone.  She slammed into the ground hard, but the impact immediately brought her back to her senses.  Completely ignoring Patagogi (who was now looming over her with sword in hand), the vishkanya glared at the magus with a cold rage.  "I'm going to skin you for that, human."  She hissed, launching herself back into the air like a missile.  She called up another bolt of cold energy, stripping away Del's last illusory double.

With the last of Delfrydydd's images gone, Pan unleashed his remaining magic arrows.  One of the human-bane arrows went wide, but the other two slammed into the magus, punching through his mithril shirt and dealing serious wounds.

Sinetal staggered to safety, followed by Raikoy, who's blink spell allowed him to pass through the burning vegetation with relative ease and only minor burns.  While the druid simply retched helplessly, the arcanist flashed a sly grin at the sight of Delfrydydd's wounds. "One skinned magus, coming up."  He quipped, calling up a barrage of inescapable magic missiles to finish the job.  But at the last second, he once again blinked out of existence, and his spell disappeared uselessly into the ethereal plane.  "-CKING DAMN IT!" He blinked back into reality mid scream, staring up at the sky as if to accuse the laws of probability of going out of their way to personally cheat him.  "This fucking spell!  Just let me kill ONE of them!"

Dorfan the Troodon snapped furiously at Patagogi in response to the half-orc's strike.  Though clearly outmatched, the little dinosaur was able to find an opening in the skald's chainmail suit, and open up a pair of deep gashes.

OOC: Note that the area of entangle (and burning entangle) is difficult terrain, and costs twice as much movement as usual.  This means Delfrydydd can't get to I0 in one move, even with the bonus from haste.  Since I figured getting out of the entangle was his main priority, I put him in O0.

I'm also making a few judgement calls for how entangle interacts with other stuff.  I'm letting Navea make a strength check to free Sinetal, since they're adjacent.  I'm also having Raikoy count as entangled until the start of his turn (including the fire damage), but then he can move freely because of his blink spell.

I'm not sure exactly what Rik meant when he put Mortimer "high" in K8, so I had Mort fly up to 60'.  Feel free to put him lower if I misunderstood, it wouldn't really affect the NPC's turns.  Also, Patagogi's reference to attacking the "weird reptile thing" was also kinda unclear, since he moved next to both Chiulu and Dorfan, who are both arguably weird reptile things.  I think he meant Dorfan, but I'll move the damage to Chiulu if I misunderstood.

Navea the Paladin
REACTION: fail reflex vs burning, take 10 fire damage
MOVE: Attempt to free self, fail
STANDARD: Attempt to free Sinetal, succeed.
SWIFT: Use Lay on hands on self, with greater mercy feat.  Heals 12 damage

Chiulu the Kineticist
REACTION: Drop 20', falling prone in N5 and taking 11 damage, but waking up.
MOVE: Fly up to N,-1 +15' high.  This provokes an AoO from Pata, and she has -4 AC vs the AoO for being prone.
STANDARD: Launch cold blast at Del.  This misses his touch AC, but destroys the last mirror image.

Pan the Hunter
FULL: Rapid shot vs Delfrydydd, spending 3 +1 human bane arrows.  1 shot misses, the other two hit for 20 and 15 damage.

Raikoy the Arcanist
REACTION: fail save vs burning, taking 6 damage (13, halved from blink)
MOVE: Move to A5
STANDARD: Cast Magic Missile, spending a reservoir point to increase caster level by +2.  Blink ruins it again!

Sinetal the Druid
REACTION: make save vs burning damage.
MOVE: Move to B4

Dorfan the Troodon
FULL: Full attack vs Patagogi.  Two hits for 5 damage each

Re: Battle 8: The Field of Honour

Erisen watched the arrows with an unseen sneer on his face. That archer was left to his own devices for far too long. "Time for another friend" he murmured as he approached the tree. "From the depths, I call thee!" he yelled quickly, singling out a particular demon-killer with his hail.

A howler materialized in a flash between the branches of the tree, with the haunting sounds of their namesake. Its massive fangs and stature were unmistakably familiar to his comrades; this was the same howler whose fangs had sealed the fate of the incubus some time past. The beast found its footing among the stronger boughs of the tree, its immense size causing the weaker branches to crack and crumble beneath it, littering the ground with debris. In a blur of movement, the howler struck, its powerful fangs clamping down on the archer, invalidating his safe perch.

The dretch, uncommanded, looked around for a bit and then chose the only foe that wasn't hampered for the moment. Its bloated form moved with jerking speed and it matched eyes with Raikoy, before doing another rumbling chant, which seemed to have little effect on the samsaran mage.

OOC:

Erisen:
  Move: Fly to E7+30'
Standard: Cast summon monster iii, losing prayer, summoning a Giant Augmented Howler with Improved Damage (bite) evolution, at B-D/8-10 + 45'. It's directly below Pan and centered with the tree center. I think it should give enough reach to cover the entire tree top.

Dretch:
Automatic: Navea passes stinking cloud save.
  Move: Move to A2.
Standard: Cast cause fear at Raikoy, who succeeds the Will save and is shaken for 1 turn, blink passes.

Howler:
  Automatic: Accept Inspired Rage
Standard: Bite attack vs Pan hits and deals 22 damage.
Automatic: Spirit totem wisp hits, and deals 5 damage.
Off-turn: The howler will auto-pass climb checks (+17 Climb), and will take AoOs (Combat Reflexes ignore flat-footed and has 2 total AoOs) whenever applicable with Bite.

Patagogi could see that the reptilian creature near him was almost dead so he kept up his attack on the thing.  He also knew he needed to get out of the entangle before being caught and helpless.  So the plan was to attack and then move if he could.  Keeping his song loud Patagogi slashed his blade at Dorfan and finished off the creature.  Seeing that happen Patagogi sped to safety.

Attack his Dorfan for 15 damage finishing him off.

Re: Battle 8: The Field of Honour

Rik shouts up to Mortimer "Help Del!" and then starts chanting out the words to a spell. He hadn't planned on breaking his invisibility so soon He only had the one offensive spell to use to begin with. He directs his spell at Chiulu hoping that the summoned monster would keep the archer at bay.

However by a stroke of luck the Kineticist managed to shake off the effect of the spell. Rik spits out a curse in elven that would make an orc blush.

Mort is too far to reach his master's ally but he is more than close enough to dive bomb and peck at the Kineticist's eyes. But naturally the jerk managed to ward off even Mortimer's skillful strikes.

OOC:
Automatic Life Link Erisen, Del, Pata  is healed 6, Rik takes 15
Automatic Mort Fast Healing 2

Re: Battle 8: The Field of Honour

Audrey, able to move freely, moved around the other field of entanglement after scooping up her spare Shovel once more until finally and carefully she burst out of the vines and took a deep breath. She had a bone to pick though with the casters of these fields. Planting one shovel back in the ground beside her she took the other and threw it in an awkward overhand throw straight towards Sinetal, spinning as it went more like an oversized Dagger then a Javelin. She was mad as a hornet and it showed from the loud Thwack that reverberated from an oddly perfect spinning shovel to the druid. She picked up her spare Shovel and adjusted her grip with a dark smile.

Free: Pick up Shovel
Move: Move to F4
Free: Plant Shovel
Standard: Throw Shovel (I forgot Rage to rolls. Hits AC 28 for 25 Slashing/Magical Damage)
Free: Pick up Shovel

21:58, Today: Audrey rolled 24 using 4d6+6.  Thrown Shovel Damage.
21:57, Today: Audrey rolled 27 using 1d20+10.  Thrown Shovel vs Sinetal (+1 to hit Haste, -2 to hit Range) AC 20.

Audrey was obviously not meant for this kind of field as she struggles more and more with difficult terrain and entanglement. She's definitely going to be considering a potion of Pass without trace in her future as she screams in anger, taking a defensive stance with her shovel. Someone is going to die. That's all there is to it. Probably the druid.

Movement: Attempt to break Entangle (Failed)
Standard: Full Defense (+4 to AC)
23:18, Today: Audrey rolled 5 using 1d20+4.  Strength Check (to break Entangle, DC 15).

Re: Battle 8: The Field of Honour

Sinetal flinched as Patagogi struck down his animal companion, then flinched significantly more as Audrey's thrown shovel bounced off the side of his head.  Effectively disabled by the dretch's gas attack and gushing blood from his head wound, the retching druid reluctantly raised his arms in the air as a sign of surrender.  He staggered away from the battle, head held low in shame at being forced to abandon the fight.

The elven archer Pan had no such shame about throwing in the towel.  Cornered and mauled by a massive hellbeast, he immediately tossed his bow to the side and held up his hands.  "Ah, ya got me!"  He called out, his tone about as disappointed as a man who had just lost a big hand of poker.  He flashed a carefree smile in the general direction of the invisible summoner who had cornered him so.  "Good fight, good fight!"

"Damn you, Pan!  This is serious!"  Called out Navea the paladin, tearing herself free from the burning vines.  She rushed to put herself between Audrey and Raikoy, heedless of the danger to herself or her own mounting burn wounds.

Raikoy the Arcanist launched off another volley of missiles at Delfrydydd, and this time he wasn't foiled by his own defensive spells.  The glowing orbs of force unerringly struck the magus, and Del collapsed to the ground, unconscious. "AND HE'S OUT!"  Came a call from the sidelines, as the Gorumite priest overseeing the duel excitedly raised a banner to indicate that the magus was officially out of the fight.  This meant he couldn't keep fighting even if Rik's magic woke him up, but it also meant that Chiulu couldn't just shoot him while he was on the ground, as much as she clearly wanted to.

Letting out a vicious cheer as Delfrydydd dropped, Chiulu flew back from Mortimer's raking talons and called up another bolt of freezing energy.  She spat a thick glob of her natural venom into the bolt before launching it forth, only for the attack to sail wide and miss the familiar entirely.  She hissed in frustration and got ready for another attack, clearly angry past the point of self preservation.

OOC: Sinetal, Dorfan, Pan, and Del are all out of the duel, meaning they can't be attacked, and they can't contribute to the fight anymore.

Re: Battle 8: The Field of Honour

Erisen glanced at the flying woman, then turned to the dretch with a new command, "Follow her, stay on her trail." The dretch looked perplexed momentarily, its inability to fly making the task seem futile. However, it soon shrugged off its confusion and gleefully scuttled across the ground, attempting to keep up with the airborne target in its own clumsy way.

Erisen watched the howler within the branches of tree, its purpose fulfilled after the archer surrendered. Ready for a tactical shift, he intoned, "From brute's might to lightning's prow, transform this beast, sleek and aglow." The howler's form contracted into a smaller, electrically charged feline figure, its proportions too wrong to be anything terrestrial.

"Prowler, subdue the blue man, no killing," he commanded. The creature launched from the tree in a dive towards the samsaran in the backline. Despite the mage's blinking in and out of reality, most of the creature's calculated strikes found their mark. As the mage fell unconscious, the prowler released him and simply didn't fall as if gravity wasn't a concern for it.

Approaching atop the tree, still cloaked in invisibility, Erisen positioned himself near the surrendered archer. "I like your attitude," his disembodied voice whispered through the leaves. "Let me know if your journey would bring you to Thrushmoor."

OOC:
Erisen:
  Free: Talky talk talk-talk
Standard: Cast alter summoned monster on Howler, replacing it with Advanced Giant Aerial Leopard with Sting Evolution.
Move: Fly to B6+60', didn't properly check the fly movement but fly speed of 90 should probably make it there. If not, anywhere near the tree works.

Leopard:
Full-Round: Charge Raikoy, Pounce, Non-lethal attacks, 3 Claws connect and deals 37 NL damage. Movement ends at A-B/5-6 + 5' (mostly a vertical charge so I think that's the most direct line)

Re: Battle 8: The Field of Honour

Pata saw his opportunity to charge forward to the paladin that seemed to be the leader of the other group and so he got his legs pumping and sword swinging above his head while he continued his song.  As he got near he swiped his blade across but not quite hard enough to pierce the paladins tough defenses.

Attack: Charge Navea but missed my attack ending at F3.
Heal another 2 damage.

Re: Battle 8: The Field of Honour

Audrey casually swung at Navea to keep the paladin on her toes as they came side to side with an irritated smile. "I dunno about you, but I'm so damned sick of nature right now. I'm ready for a drink. Sorry lass but I'm gonna put you to sleep so we can all move on with our lives."

Audrey was both a natural fighter and yet a bit too haphazard with her improperly sized weapon, swinging and spinning it like a polearm yet somehow doing it in such a wrong way it worked. It was not traditional combat and as her shovel slammed itself into the holy guardian of the other group, Audrey was reminded classically trained combatants really had no idea how to handle it. Two heavy hits to the paladins helmet with all of her strength behind it should definitely have rocked the guardian hard. Though she did try to hold back. She was irritated, but saw no reason to kill the lass. Yet.

OOC:

Re: Battle 8: The Field of Honour

Rik surveyed the battlefield. This was going on longer than expected. He was almost out of spells but it seemed like the tide had turned in their favor. With little else to do and no one needing medical attention, he flew toward Chiulu. He didn't expect Mortimer would be able to handle her on his own.

He chanted out the words to his spell and tried to drain the vitality from the kineticist but she managed to shake off the effects. Meanwhile Mortimer kept harrying her but she proved to be too tough of a nut to crack.

Re: Battle 8: The Field of Honour

Erisen's flying panther bore the arcanist to the ground, and the cry of shock and pain coming from behind Navea provided enough of a distraction for Audrey and Patagogi to overwhelm her defenses and bludgeon the paladin unconscious.  Chiulu continued to avoid the attentions of Rik and his familiar, but even she had to admit that the fight was over.  "Enough!"  She snarled, throwing up her hands in surrender.  "You scum know how to fight, I'll give you that."

Meanwhile up in the tree, Pan responded to Erisen's offer with a languid shrug.  "Ya seem alright, yourself." He remarked. "Might take you up on that.  For now, I think I'll keep tagging along with this lot.  They're a good bunch, even if they take everything too personal.  Humans and their short lives, you know how it is."

OOC: You win!  Feel free to roleplay how your characters act in the aftermath.

Re: Battle 8: The Field of Honour

Audrey sighed down at the unconscious Paladin, she could hold a grudge but the holy types had a soft spot from her. She had good memories of them actually caring unlike many. With the fight official over she scooped the woman up; armor and all, and carried the young lass like a princess over to the healers of this brawl. Or her parties healers; either or.

"Good fight, I dunno where y'all heard that nonsense but I respect someone willing to put their sword where their mouth is." Audrey was surprisingly careful when putting down the paladin, adjusting her shovel on her back with a nod.

Pata was glad that the battle was over.  The grasping vines all but disappeared and made walking around easier.  Pata moved to Del to check him out. He was the only one of them that had been knocked out of the fight.  "You okay buddy?  You certainly kept them busy and let us handle the rest of them.  We won not only the fight but our reputation!  Come let me help you!"

Re: Battle 8: The Field of Honour

"As you wish," Erisen's voice lingered, almost playful among the leaves. "Should you seek a different script, look for the 'Midnight Masquerade' in Thrushmoor. Tell them Erisen sent you. They have a penchant for those with an unconventional spirit. It’s an open invitation."

As Erisen glided down from the tree, his form emerged from the thin air like a figure stepping out from a veil of fog. With a nonchalant gesture, he dismissed the dretch and the leopard. They faded, their forms dissolving into mere whispers of smoke and shadow, juxtaposing the materialization of their summoner.

Erisen landed softly on the ground, his boots barely making a sound as they touched the earth. He surveyed the aftermath of the battle with a critical eye. "Well done, everyone." he commented dryly, a hint of approval in his tone.
