Re: Battle 5: Guardian of the Cave

Delfrydydd watched as the inexplicable thundercloud formed around Erisen's position. At a loss, the half-elf moved away from his companion and deeper into the cave. As he flew on, Fryd looked back at the badger engaged with Patagogi and willed the creature to lie down, "Cysgwch chi beth bach!"

OOC:
Free: Spellcraft check, failed. might have been the weather...
Standard: Slumber Hex on badger, DC 16 will save to negate
Move: Fly P8+20 to J12+20

Re: Battle 5: Guardian of the Cave

Rik continues his Chanting. Even through the noise of the lightning spell and the sounds of combat his rhythmic baritone can be clearly heard.

Through the chanting you hear some distinct words as he calls out to the spirits "Let the force of life flow effortlessly and empower me." He pats Mortimer on the head as he finishes casting his spell. Mortimer affectionately nudges him back and Rik's form begins to shift and waver.

Even through all of this you can see Patagogi's wounds beginning to seal shut and blood stains start to show through on Rik's clothes.

OOC:
Standard: Cast Spirit Share on Mortimer
Move: Chant (+1 round to Fortune)
Automatic: Heal Patagogi 6 HP, Rik takes 3 damage, Mortimer takes 2 damage.

Familiar Standard: Administer a Potion of Blur

Re: Battle 5: Guardian of the Cave

As Delfrydydd flies further into the cave, he gets the party's first glimpse of their enemy.  The mad druid has transformed himself into the substance of the very earth he claims to protect: a shambling mass of rock and earth moulded roughly into the size and shape of a dwarven man.

Erisen scrambled away from the druid's thundercloud, his magical boots spurring him to safety before his mind had fully recovered from it's shock.  With a gesture of it's hand, the stony dwarf sent the cloud chasing after it's prey, then called up a second, smaller cloud in an attempt to hold off it's other opponent.

Meanwhile, the druid's pet badger continued clawing madly in Patagogi's direction, seeming to barely notice the gushing wound left by the skald's blade.  Fortunately, Patagogi was able to fend off all of the badger's attacks.

Cave Guardian:
FREE    : 5' step to H19
STANDARD: Cast aggressive thundercloud on Delfrydydd, Del saves and takes no damage
MOVE    : Move Greater aggressive thundercloud to Q13
IMMEDIATE: If attacked, cast stone shield to provide cover for one round.

Cave Badger:
FULL    : Full attack vs Patagogi.  Misses with all three attack.

Battle 5: Guardian of the Cave

Stirring next to a towering rock column, Erisen quickly cleared the lingering fog in his mind from the lightning's aftershock. Noticing his missing rod, frustration colored his features. "No respect for the art," he grumbled, "Very well, we can play rough." Moving swiftly, Erisen touched down on a distant edge of the cavern, distancing himself from the persistent thundercloud. With a brief, stern chant, he commanded, "Come!" Summoning forth a creature to aid in battle.

From the dark veil of the spell emerged a howler; its sinewy form covered in matted fur, a long snout filled with razor-sharp teeth, and claws that seemed eager to rend. But it was the chilling howl it emitted that truly unnerved, echoing through the cavern. As the howler lunged at the guardian, the stone being hastily raised the earth next to him in an attempt to block the creature's assault. Undeterred, the howler's claws and quills struck true, tearing chunks of rocks and earth from the guardian's form.

OOC:

Erisen:
 Move: Fly to M20, land.
Standard: Summon Advanced Augmented Howler with claws evolution at FG19-20.
 Free: Talk

Howler:
Automatic: Howl attack against all non-outsiders within 120ft, Will 14 saves. Mortimer and Cave Badger fail and get cursed by the Howler's Howl and take 1 WIS damage.
 Automatic: Accepts raging song.
Howler Howl: Curse; save Will DC 14 negates; frequency 1/hour; effect 1 Wis damage; cure 1 save.
(I added Pata's well-versed and superstition to it, diamond is immune by default. If I missed a modifier, sorry. It is a sonic mind-affecting effect.)
Full Round: Full attack vs Guardian. 2 claws and quill hits vs AC 25, dealing 31 damage. Guardian makes the save against the Pain ability. Spirit wisp attack hits the stone shield, completely absorbed by hardness.

Rolls (wouldn't be my turn if I didn't miss-roll something, Reflex save needs +2 from cover, doesn't matter):

Battle 5: Guardian of the Cave

Rik is left without many options at the moment, the Skald would no doubt shrug off any attempts to heal him and the the others were too far away for his blessings to reach them, even if his chanting might carry to them.

His chanting took on a different tone as he focused his power inwards. "Hear me spirits aide me in all my endeavors" his blessing being delivered he kept up his chanting to benefit himself. "Mortimer slip past him." he finally said to his companion letting him know that he was needed elsewhere.

Meanwhile Mortimer preened his own feathers and turned invisible, the potion in his pouch depleting to benefit himself. Then he flew off over the badger. Closing on the spell casters while avoiding the roaming thunder storms.

Secretly Rik curses himself for forgetting to cast his Contingent Spell before the battle began.

Using his blade to dodge the claws and bites from the badger was effective this time.  The badge didn't even get close.

Patagogi then found an opening and turned his blade enough to get in a good strike on the badge once again.  It wasn't as strong as the previous one but it was effective nonetheless.  The spirits from both Diamond and Patagogi also nipped at the badge.

Hit the badger for 12 damage and the spirits did 10 necrotic damage.  22 total on the badger.

Re: Battle 5: Guardian of the Cave

OOC: I just realized Diamond shouldn't have been able to accept Patagogi's song, due to it being a construct and therefor immune to morale effects.  So Patagogi only gets one spirit wisp attack this round.

The Guardian staggered as Erisen's howler (an even more twisted and unnatural specimen than the rest of it's kind) tore chunks out of it's stone body, then stumbled again as he was struck by Del's enchanted bullet.  He pointed an earthen finger accusingly in Erisen's direction.  "You summon abominations into our world, yet you dare speak about respecting the Art?  You scum!  Get out of my cave!"  Calling out another incantation, the druid filled the cavern with a storm of swirling ash and dust, blinding everyone inside (except Erisen, who had prepared for such a situation beforehand)

Meanwhile, the druid's pet badger continued swiping furiously at Patagogi despite it's own mounting wounds.  This time it's meaty, shovel-like claws struck true, tearing deep furrows into the Skald's arms as Pata's sword dug into it's own flesh.

Cave Guardian:
FREE: 5' step to I19
STANDARD: Cast Ash storm, covering the area indicated on the map.  The storm blocks all vision (unless you have Ashen Path cast on you) and makes the ground difficult terrain.
MOVE    : Direct Greater aggressive thundercloud to N16
IMMEDIATE: If attacked, cast stone shield to provide cover for 1 round.

Cave Badger: Full attack vs Patagogi.  Two claws hit for 26 damage total.

Seeing the swirl of ash and cinder form right below his feet, Del finally was able to figure out what the little druid was doing, "That tricky little bugger!". Concentrating on where the dwarf was before the the whirlwind formed, Del willed his eldritch power into his musket and shot that force into the cloud, "Dal y llu teg hwn a rhew!".

Keeping his eye on the spot where the druid was Del waited to see if those freak electrical storms were following him.

Battle 5: Guardian of the Cave

As the cavern filled with a tempest of ash and dust, Erisen was unaffected, his foresight allowing him clarity amid the chaos. With an indignant glare, Erisen met the druid's accusatory finger. "Your understanding is as shallow as a puddle. You wouldn't recognize true art even if it struck your face!" he retorted.

In a swift motion, and with a few muttered words, Erisen transformed the howler. In its place hovered a massive dire bat, its form echoing the very essence of the Elemental Plane of Earth. Its skin carried a stony texture, with droplets of acid occasionally dripping from its body. After invoking his transformative spell, Erisen quickly maneuvered, flying back towards the spot where he'd dropped his rod.

The bat, already menacingly close to the druid, took a short, tactical glide to adjust its position. In its frenzied attack, the tumultuous environment caused it to misjudge its attack, missing the mark with a bite.

OOC:

The savage badgers attack shocked Patagogi and as he tried to retaliate he completely missed the badger.  Thankfully Patagogi's healing and some of Rik's were having decent results in keeping him standing.

Missed his attack and the wisps missed as well.

Also, if the next one knocks me under, Diamond will take half of the damage so we share instead.

Delfrydydd's second shot nearly knocked the earthen druid into pieces, and he staggered as a layer of frost began to spread over his body.  The cave guardian let out a low groan, before calling out in a weak voice.  "Damn you..." The rustle of gravel could be heard from inside the swirl of choking ash, as the druid sank down into the earth and disappeared even from Erisen's sight.

The druid's pet seemed less inclined to flee, and continued to frantically tear into Patagogi.  Once again, a claw found it's way past the skald's defenses, though the wound closed nearly as fast as it opened.

Patagogi did just that as the badger hit him, passing 5 points of damage to Diamond.  Patagogi then slashed his blade in anger and cut deep into the flank of the badger inflicting great pain.

Erisen felt a gentle touch on his shoulder. Mortimer channelled a surge of healing energy into him. The pain ebbed away, replaced with a renewed vigor. "Thank you," Erisen murmured with gratitude to the feathered friend.

With his eyes cutting through the inky darkness of the ash storm, Erisen navigated the treacherous ground littered with jagged stone spikes to retrieve his rod. As he lifted it, he beckoned the bat with a sharp command. "To me!"

Determination welled within him. "He dares insult my artistry. He cannot simply flee," Erisen whispered, primarily to reassure himself. This was no longer just about strategy — it was personal.

Drawing a steadying breath, he intoned a spell, its arcane words acting as a conduit between realms: "Whence from depths thou art called, heed the cries of the scorned..." As his voice wove the incantation, the delicate veil separating worlds quivered. Erisen sought to ensnare the fleeing druid with this last-ditch effort, but whether his spell would take effect in time was a gamble.

The badger managed to stay on it's feet for a moment more after receiving a third blow from Patagogi's heavy blade, but only for a moment.  The adrenaline rush of the furry beast's initial attack was clearly fading, and with it faded the last of the creature's strength.  Eyes already starting to glaze over, the badger slowly toppled onto it's side with a pathetic *woof*.  OOC: The badger runs out of rage, and drops to -7 HP.

The druid himself does not resurface.

OOC: You win!  Feel free to roleplay what your characters do in the battle's aftermath.  I'm assuming you have no way to effectively track down or pursue someone with 30' earthglide, but if any of you have a good idea, you can give it a shot.  Most of the magical effects clear out pretty quickly, though the spike stones last a full 8 hours.

Rik stands straight and plants the haft of his spear on the ground, smiling broadly at combined party "Well it's a good thing I stepped in there at the end to get the killing blow!"

Re: Battle 5: Guardian of the Cave

Erisen finished the incantation, and the cavern trembled as a chthonic, oversized spider materialized before him. With an assertive command, he ordered, "Dig! Bring that druid to the surface!" The spider, responding promptly, burrowed into the earth, its form blending with the surrounding rock as it pursued the druid beneath the surface.

Erisen stood with bated breath, listening intently, waiting for signs of struggle or success from below. The seconds ticked by, feeling much longer in anticipation. Yet, as the moments passed and the spider's subtle vibrations through the ground faded, it became clear that the elusive druid had escaped his grasp.

Lifting his gaze, Erisen found Del effortlessly floating above the ashstorm, magic lifting him without the need for wings. "Your shots struck true, Del," Erisen remarked with a mixture of gratitude and lingering frustration. "The guardian felt them."

OOC: Finish summon for a chthonic giant giant spider, the spider attempts hitting the druid underground, fails.

Erisen rolled 16,5 using d20+10,d4+3.  wait, what about spirit wisp.
Erisen rolled 8 using 1d20+6.  spooder hit.

Patagogi came out of his rage when the badger fell over.  That was when he felt the pain and injuries he had taken.  "Owww that hurt a bit.  Next time if we have a one on one fight I suggest trying to get into a flanking position."  Patagogi said as he turned to Rik.

"Thank you for whatever you did with your healing, it was very helpful!"

"Spikey rock bits and giant claws put a bit of a damper on that but I'll keep it in mind."

He says as he starts healing off the wounds that he took on the party's behalf.

Re: Battle 5: Guardian of the Cave

With the badger dead and it's master escaped, the party dusted themselves off and (after some work to circumvent the spike covered floor,) continued into the cave.  Though they had no way to properly track down the earth-gliding druid across long distances, they did succeed in locating what appeared to be his den.  Alongside a small fungus farm and an underground pond stocked with pale, eyeless fish, they discovered an altar dedicated to some strange, cthonic god nobody in the group recognized, piled with offering of raw gemstones and trinkets taken from dead miners.

The mining company, for it's part, refused payment for the "incomplete job" and stiffed the party entirely.  But the druid did not return to the mine, and over the next few days and weeks, they received a number of grateful letters from the miners and their families for chasing away the murderous dwarf.  Whether that gratitude made for a suitable substitute for actual money was presumably a matter of opinion.
