Day 16 20 Juvax 45 : Down Time

GM Note:
Are you holding a physical meeting or a 'virtual' meeting? A physical 'in-person' meeting would need to be held in your room, as now where else in the house has a physical widescreen or actual white board, and you don't know anywhere else that does. A virtual meeting is easier, as everyone just goes online and you all meet up in a virtual conference room with as many whiteboards/tote boards as you want to create.

You can assume all of your (NPC) cousins will attend..
Edward Pinmillion:
"So where do you want to start? When we boarded the Mini-Bus outside the Conference Center?"

Cathal O'Donoghue:
[OOC the it is a virtual meeting, some thing are better written down.]

"Yes start with the boarding of the Mini-buss. We drove off and we all felt the  power of the pattern. 2 hours later we were in Las Vegas. The distance between the Center and Las Vegas is far longer than this time span."

Edward Pinmillion:
"Actually it was about an hour. She used the same trick at least twice later, once to get us from Las Vegas to Washington in a few hours, and then from where ever we picked the Caiman up from to Big Creek, then again to get us to the petrol station, as a confused Kenneth pointed out. Did she also use the same trick to get us to where ever we ended up in South America, that I can't answer."

"Once we got to Las Vegas, she did a couple of other things which I don't think are related in any way to the Pattern, first she took on Rhainnon's form, a neat trick if you ask me, means I'm going to have to think about putting some work in in that area. Never really had the need or inclination to explore what I might be capable of doing in that way, then she got the Vallet to look after her bag, probably in the same way she dealt with the supercilious clerk in the rental office, and the 2 drivers of the low-loader transporting the Caiman."
"Then in the Casio, by her own admission she used the Pattern to alter the odd of the slot machines paying out, although the effect wasn't immediate, is that relevant?"

Cormac Camerilli:
"Probably, she said later in an answer to Rhiannon's question about just 'jumping across shadow' that if you strain the laws of probability too much you inadvertently shift shadows, she also said again in answer to a question asked by Rhiannon, that she couldn't use the Pattern to keep the drug dealers clueless because she didn't have the time to prepare. Is that another requirement of using the Pattern to manipulating probability, that you need some time for it to take effect, and if so how much time?"

Day 16 20 Juvax 45 : Down Time

The men started the conversation and covered the ground pretty well. Rhiannon knew that her and Cathal's opinion about Charlie was not shared by the others, so she didn't bring it up and didn't comment as Edward and Cormac spoke. What they said didn't really invite that kind of comment anyway and there was no good reason to be petty and expressing how she felt wouldn't be constructive. She couldn't hold her tongue completely, however.

"I didn't like that." Rhiannon finally spoke. "I know it's not important to this conversation, but I didn't like it when she used my likeness. After ignoring me and treating me as she did, to take my shape was infuriating. It was like she was mocking me."

She looked down.

"That was unhelpful I know, but I had to say it. But while we're talking, why are we in here? We're trying to pick out what was so significant about everything she did, when she could just tell us herself. There is so much to learn, wouldn't it make more sense to just tell what mattered and what didn't? I really don't understand this method of tutelage."

"I suppose if we're going to do this, we should just write down these questions and ask the when we see her. Perhaps Cormac or Edward should ask, considering her track record for ignoring me."

"What do you think. Did we stayed in the same shadow on our way to Vegas or did we shifted out and then shifted back in." Cathal asks.

"Either Chralies is a shapeshifter or it was some magic trick with taking Rhias likeness and I agreee with Rhia it was not fair. She could have taken the likeness of someone not part of our group."

"I would love to get some answers from Charlie. But I will get no good answers from her like you Rhia. I'm noting down the questions here on the virtual board anybody of you can add to them and make comments."

"This with the probability and inadvertently shifting shadow, I do not get completely. How can we shift shadow if we just manipulate probability." Cathals adds it as question to the board.

"Maybe we ask Cordelia what all this means and is about."

"I know from my mother that a strong mind can dominate a weaker willed mind. I think that was what Charlie did with the Vallet  and later with clerk and the 2 drivers."

"The effect of probability manipulation not being immediate can be relevant, it might take some time for that it takes effect or she did not wanted to cause immediate attention." He not this down too.

"The question is did she located the Caiman or shifted to 'a' Caiman. Where we in the same shadow or did we shifted."

"So after the Caiman she used the pattern to get us to the drug dealers. Again the question is, was that the same shadow or somewhere else in shadow. Please if I says something wrong correct me."

But if the goal was to show that the Pattern could be used to shield us from harm, it could have done on a shooting range and not where the shooter was actively trying to kill us all. Day 16 20 Juvax 45 : Down Time

Cathal O'Donoghue:
Cathal is curious and ask one of the official about the reason.

Initially they will look at you skeptically, as if you can't be serious, or as if you're pulling their leg, which means you'll need to explain that you haven't been here long (as in about 15 days), and that you don't actually know what's going on.
At that point they'll be more forthcoming, so the latest batch of immigrants came in 10 days ago on the ships Wyatt and Angel bought in. It takes a couple of weeks or so to get everyone into the right temporary accommodation, but a couple of months for them to acclimatize and begin to be assimilated. Often this requires language courses and custom/culture courses, but there's often schooling to sort out for any children, and of course jobs/occupations for the parent(s) or individuals. Some of this my be 'long term', including future housing solutions, which is one of the biggest problems currently, they can't build houses fast enough, which puts pressure on the limited stock of apartments they have.

One other thing of note, you don't have the language barrier you had the first time you came into town, as at that point you hadn't walked the Pattern.

Actually there is another thing to note, which sort of got missed in the original 'Day 2 Town excursion' thread because I think the player who was playing Cathal at the time dropped out before we got to it so I didn't bother writing it into the thread.

The Fulgent, being a Mizzurian car, has the relevant id/encoding built into the electronics in the car to open the gates into the Mizzurian office car park. From within the car park you can exit into town without any problems, which is what happened the first time. The issue comes when you want to get back into the car park, you need a Mizzurian Staff ID/Visitors ID to get through the gate.
This meant that Cathal had to go around to Main Reception to find out how to get back in to get the car (Main Reception is closer than the security office, being directly across from the 'retail block'). Once in Reception, and once they'd verified who he was, the receptionist went into the office behind reception and returned with his Mizzurian Staff ID badge. His badge has a slightly different background Pattern on it than either the receptionists badge or any other badge worn by a staff member. His lanyard is also purple with gold lettering, as opposed to red with white lettering - the lettering like on all the other staff lanyards just says "STAFF".

From the nominal start of the 'grid' 2Km outside of the center of town, the speed limit is 35mph/56kmh. Outside of that there currently isn't one, other than what is sensible for the road (you're not going to be able to do more than 50mph on the unmade road through the canyon for instance and only then in a 4x4).

Note also that the car can't be driven over the speed limit inside the town limits.

"It's good though that you have a relationship with your step-father. My last foster-family was nice, but it's not the same. What happened to your mother?"

Maybe there's a photo of my parents somewhere, though I suspect I'm the product of a one night stand between a Lord of Amber and woman too young to be a mother. I suppose if all else fails, I could secretly collect DNA samples and order paternity tests."

"Lovely! Thank you."

Entering the shop, Rhiannon looks for a clerk until she spots a woman about her own age at a counter. "Excuse me, I would love to try on that green dress in the window, or at least one like it in my size." That made her think about how dresses were sized in Carnelian "To be honest, I'm staying at the mansion. I'm not from here, so I might need your assistance on the size also."

The assistant smiled, getting up from her seat as she looked over Rhiannon's shape. After a quick double check of which dress that was in the window, she went into the back. A few moments later with the same dress draped over her arm. After handing it to Rhiannon, she directed her to the dressing rooms.

The dress was not as easy to get on as Rhiannon expected. Though it had a zipper in the back, it was tight and barely elastic enough to get over her hips. It wasn't designed for her bra and it took more than a few attempts to nudge her breasts properly into the cups. Getting the zipper up required a fair bit of flexibility and then there was some more nudging and tugging around the bodice. God knows how long later, she emerged.

"Well, Cathal" She held her arms wide and did a twirl. "What do you think?"

Proprietors Eldest Daughter:
"For a clutch, that depends on what you require. We can make you either a matching or contrasting clutch from our fabric range in a couple of days. If you require a fashion, designer, or exotic clutch then you will need to order from the Mall which may take several days to arrive. For shoes, again that depends on what you require, Lianne stocks a variety of everyday shoes, and a limited selection of others, and again she can order from the more extensive collections in the Mall. The two coffee shops have slightly different 'feels' about them. "Latte Da!" has a sort of Mexican cross Cuban feel, whilst "Elysian Espresso" is very much more 'California surfing'.
Street traffic is very light, but picks up as lunchtime approaches, although it wouldn't be considered bustling such as in London, Dublin, or San Francisco.
The mix is diverse, nominally 'white American', ethnic Asian although most would be considered to fall into the 'Chinese' classification, and a spattering of what could be Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, and African.

The diverse coffee menus were a delight but also confusing. There were so many options, and Rhiannon didn't want to squander the opportunity by ordering a vanilla latte. She decided to let go with a Cuban coffee, though with sweetener. A Café con leche. It was a lot of sweetener

"So, Cathal, I want to hear your thoughts on where we are. I don't mean like now in the coffee shop. I mean with our training and our new royal status. Me? I feel lost and marginal. We were irrelevant at the balls, and I still feel irrelevant. I don't know where Cordelia gets off to when she's not around, or any of the others, but it feels like there are real important things out there happening and we're just a side project."

"Then we have people like Charlie who treat us like a chore. The big picture is still fuzzy in many ways, and the details aren't adding up to the whole. I don't think it's deceptive. There are just pieces missing."

"I have no clue what they expect from us or when."

"I'm a bit lost why they need us. They seem to have quite a bit of shadow walkers, but it seems not to be enough. I'm not sure but I think they too have not so much clue what is going on and why shadow makes this isolated islands. But if they have no clue I do not see how we can help them."

"I would not give much about Charlie. Concentrate on the one who make the decision and that is not Charlie not even Cordelia, it is the council and they gave Cordelia the task to train us."

"I would like to meet this council. It would be good to hear what they know and what they don't. I would like to hear them tell us how we can help aside from simply adding to their numbers. Even if they say we might give them a fresh perspective. Perhaps among us will emerge the ability to create new pathways through shadow. I mean, things are said to us but they tell us little. Fix Shadow. What does that mean?"

"As I said, they've spoken on many of these topics. Maybe I'm just too dense, but it's still not clear. And honestly, at the rate we're learning, it could take years before we are of any value to them. This is all so fascinating, but also so very frustrating."

"I also have so many questions about the nature of shadow. I suppose I should avail myself of those moments when we're dining with Gabriel or Madison. Cordelia can be helpful, but she has this way of making me feel like an idiot for asking anything. So, what if she mentioned it before? It's just as easy to answer in the moment as it is to scold. I don't know if those questions though will help me more than just sate my curiosity, but I am curious. Things like, if the center of the pattern can transport you anywhere, why not just have it send you to Amber? If Shadow is infinite, than how can it form islands? How do they know they're islands unless they can cross from one to the other?"

"This coffee is very good, by the way."

Day 16 20 Juvax 45 : Down Time

Walking into Lianne's Bountiful Soles is a complete shock to the system for anybody used to walking into a modern 21st century shoe shop, because its like walking into a 1920's shoe store.

A long wooden counter starts about 1/3 of the distance from the entrance door and runs from the right-hand wall to 1/2 way across the width of the store and then all the way to the rear wall, except that the rear 1/3 of the counter partition extends from floor to ceiling as double sided pigeon holes of various sizes.
The counter itself is about 2ft 6" wide and appears to be leather topped. Behind the counter are 2 more floor to ceiling blocks of double pigeon holes, space 3ft apart and 3ft from the counter. Some have shoe boxes in, some have boots or shoes, and the rest have 'lasts' in. There are a few that have other odd things in including laces of all sorts.

Beneath it is a smaller sign which reads, "Clogs, Jika-tabi, Tabi, Zori, Geta, Hanfu (Ju, Lu, Ji, Xue), and Xiuhuaxie, all made to order.

The shop smells distinctly of waxed leather.

The remainder of the shop is taken up with modern display cases displaying for the most part 'functional workday shoes' in both Western and Oriental styles, split roughly 50/50 between the two. Interestingly the Western styles include 3 styles of safety work boot in both mens and ladies sizes. There appear to be few if any high fashion shoes in the shop. On the corner of the counter facing the door is a large monitor screen, and a pair of virtual reality headsets, similar to those in your room in the Mansion.

One the right-hand wall, just to the right of where the counter starts, is an ornate embellished large wooden sign, which reads "Lianne Fine Shoes and Boots. Boots and shoes of all styles handcrafted from the finest leathers to suit all sizes and shapes of feet. Don't put your feet to the test wear the best."

As you enter the shop, the motion of the door causes a bell to be struck and rung. This causes after about 30 seconds a woman in her mid to late 40's to appear, along with a much younger male assistant.

The woman will say
Lianne:
"Good afternoon sir and madam, were you looking for anything in particular?"

Rhiannon stopped up short the moment she crossed the threshold into Lianne Fine Shoes and Boots. The bell on the door wasn't was cause the moment of uncertainty, though. It was that it looked way different than she would have expected, had she bothered to set an expectation instead of just assuming it would be like any shoe store she was used to. The shop did have an large assortment of shoes and boots, but the long counter suggested that this place was more service oriented than being simply a showroom for their wares. Her hesitation was more to take it all in, but after a short time, two attendants  emerged from the back to greet them.

"Yes," Rhiannon smiled, though she felt a bit put on the spot only because she was still getting her bearings. "Hello. As Cathal said, I, um, just bought a lovely green and black ball dress, and was looking for a new pair of shoes to match. I'm not certain what I want, but it can be either boots or heels suitable for a ballroom. But also, now that I see your show room, I might also want to browse for something else."

"A lot depends on whether madam wants made-to-measure or off the shelf. For hand made we can do either black or a dark or deep green. For off the shelf you're limited to what the manufacture provides, but black is one of the more traditional colours. As to style, we can do either open toed with a strap, closed toe with a strap, or a full shoe, and with either a Cuban heal or a stub stiletto as opposed to a Latin stiletto."

Aside for the plate being a little cold, it's a little uncomfortable as Parker makes sure you shoulders stay firmly against the back plate, whilst he brings down a semi-circular frame to knee level.

Parker:
"For what purpose would you be wearing them? Jika-Taki are one of the most common in modern use. In the mean time, would you like to follow me, and we can get you feet scanned."
He will lead you through a gap in the counter at the back of the store, into a small open area. Against the wall on one side is an odd piece of machinery with a monitor.
"If you would remove your shoes and socks and stand on the plate please with you back against the upright to the back"
Aside for the plate being a little cold, it's a little uncomfortable as Parker makes sure you shoulders stay firmly against the back plate, whilst he brings down a semi-circular frame to knee level.
"If you could remain still, this will take a couple of minutes, whilst we get a 3D scan of your feet. I'm assuming you have an Avatar on the system, in which case it will update the profile. It's more accurate than using the gloves, and enables us to have an accurate last cut by a CNC wood mill."

</quote>

"I would like to wear the second pair on more casual occasion, for a city walk. I think yes the Jika-Taki look fine."

CAthal hold still while his fet are measured and makes the steps to call his avater to uptdate it with the new information.

"Yes, that's perfect" Rhiannon replied to Lianne's recitation of what she wanted. She was a bit surprised that the shoemaker didn't know what Steampunk was. The town seemed so modern, buut maybe some cultural things didn't make it over. She had the thought to explain it, but decided it wasn't worth the effort.

Looking at the two boots, Rhiannon selected the pair obviously made for hiking. As she insisted, the safety boot looked too utilitarian. "I'll take these, thank you." Once she made her selection, she went with Parker to have her feet scanned.

Grisport do not make the Gamekeeper, which is the sytle Cathal purchased as a "Ladies" Boot. It's only listed in the "Mens" styles. So if Rhiannon wants that style of boot she's going to have to specifically ask for it, and hope they have it in her size.

I'm assuming that Rhiannon is then going to follow Cathal to the Council Offices.

Cathal now has the above conversation.

"I heard that if I want to ask about housing for a new resident I would have to speak with Calli Hguyen, Is i correct that he is at the city hall?"

Okay, the answer would basically be the same, but provided by a different person.

Upon reaching the town hall and enquiring at the reception desk (you need to do so to get through the security barrier, although technically at 3ft6" high you could easily jump over it), you're directed to the second floor. I'm assuming that Cathal brought his Mizzurian ID with him, given he was going to park in the Mizzurian office carpark.
As Rhiannon does not have hers she's given a visitors badge. Cathal's ID will let him through the Security Barrier and if he uses the 'Disabillty Access' Rhiannon can follow without him having to activate the turnstyle to allow her through.

Ascending to the second floor, you come out into an open plan office, which appears to be some version of 'organized chaos'.
If you stand around looking 'lost' as there's nothing particularly obvious in relation to who Calli may be or where she may be.
Huang Ting:
a young oriental by the name of Huang Ting  detaches herself from her desk and comes over "Can I be of assistance?"

Assuming Cathal asks for Calli Hguyen (pronounced Nwi-en) she says "If you would follow me please" and leads you to the far righthand corner (if you with the Town Hall from the front)/ left hand corner (as you come out of the central 'hall' stairs into the office).

Seated at a desk is another oriental woman, probably in her late 20's early 30's.
"Calli you have visitors."

Calli Hguyen:
She looks up from where she's typing on a keyboard "Thankyou Ting. I'll be with you in a minute or two, need to finish this email before I forget what I'm doing."
Having finished her email she stands up and extends her hand first to Rhiannon
"Nice to formally meet you Miss Kerrigan"
and then to Cathal
"likewise Mr O'Donoghue. What can I do for you?"

Calli Hguyen:
"The basic procedure, would be to identify which plot you wanted, register it in either your's or your father's name, and agree what style of house you want and what layout. We have 3 or 4 standard plans depending on the actual style, Western or Oriental. After that it's all down to schedules, at least in terms of initial construction. Fitting out the interior is a little more complicated, but again its mostly about material availability and scheduling."

Day 16 20 Juvax 45 : Down Time

Cathal O'Donoghue:
"Do you have a list of available plots and where they are. Can I visit them?"

If you go to the Carnelian Map, then each major block will have a <digit><letter><digit><letter> code. The top left (SE corner) is 0A0A. You then work both across and down the map, so the block to the right is 0B0A, and the block below is 0A0B, and the next block on the diagonal is 0B0B. Once you reach 0Z then the next block will be 1A, then 1B, etc
Within each block there are nominally 6 plots (some only have 3). These just have numbers working left to right top to bottom.
So a horizontal block will be
    1  2  3
    4  5  6
And a vertical block will be
    1  2
    3  4
    5  6
Thus a plot will have a designation such as 1C0N2.

There are more vacent plots along the outer edges than in the middle, particularly along the Western (right), Southern (top - closest to the docks and other heavy industry), and Northen (close to the Effluent Treatment works) edges.

Calli Hguyen:
"We can track them on the system, but we don't have a printout, and generally don't do so. All the vacent plots, or should I say all those not yet built upon, should have a plot marker, in one corner closest to the road. If it's been reserved, then it will have a clear covering plate with an 'R' on it. Just wander about and bring in a list with your choices in preference order. If you find a plot without a marker on it then it would be useful to know. The kids sometimes find it amusing to move them. We go round and check a couple of times a year. Typically any plot which appears overgrown is vacent."
"Currently there are more vacent plots along the Western edge, Southern edge, and Northern edge of the town. Any major expansion is likely to be to the South West, as there are less complications in expanding in that direction."

Stepping back, she listened to the interaction. This wasn't her business and there as no need to insert herself. In the end it sounded like Cathal got what he came for, but the conversation sparked a thought in her own mind.

"Indeed." She responded to him on their way out the door. "Um, perhaps I missed something, but is there a Kind of these lands? I thought Cordelia was the ruler. If there is a King, I would like to meet him."

"Hearing all that in there, I had a thought. I don't imagine we would be staying in the Mansion forever. Cordelia plucked me from university, so I never really thought about a place to live, but if the vacancies are filling up, perhaps it would be wise to reserve a place. If your father doesn't come live here, you could always use it as a kind of safe house. You know, just a place to get away."

Day 16 20 Juvax 45 : Down Time

Having collected Rhiannon's ID from the office, and returned to the car, you make you way back towards the Mansion.
Instead of turning left at the roundabout, which would take you back to the mansion, Cathal goes straight across.
The metaled surface continues for about 300m before it gives way to a crushed compacted stone and gravel road.
gm note:
Rhiannon will recognise this from her excursion on Day 5 with Alana and Natsuki. She also knows that the track will lead to the river.

After a further half mile the unmade road appears to turn left into a canyon, whilst a track joins from straight ahead.
Given that the road appears to turn into the canyon and the attendant at the fuel station said something about a canyon, Cathal turns into the canyon.
On the stone and gravel surface he's forced to drive far slower than on the metaled road.
After about half a mile there are signs indicating a 'Hairpin' bend and another indicating to 'use your horn'.
Very quickly Cathal finds himself following a sharp right hairpin bend that appears to turn 180 degrees before straightening out one more into a canyon road.
Reaching the other end of the canyon, the road turns right, and a further half mile on, you come to a roundabout. There is a road on the right that appears to be the start of a switchback that ascends the escarpment, and a road round to the left that cuts through the forest.
Following the directions he's been given, Cathal turns right onto the switchback and begins the climb.
As they start the climb on the third leg, first what could be the outline of a crenelation along the top of a tower becomes visible, then more of the tower structure, with what could be gun ports in it, then the outline of more crenelated towers, a wall and then a gatehouse.
The scale is unlike anything either have encountered previously.
The outer wall is 75ft high, with 120ft high 60ft diameter towers every 300ft.
The road runs between the outer wall and the edge of the escarpment, parallel to the wall, and approaches a massive gatehouse, nearly 500ft wide and 115ft high. Six towers, one at each end where it joins the wall, and equally spaced to form a central square surround the gateway arch. These 70ft diameter towers stand 150ft tall.
In the distance behind the outer wall stands the huge 500ft diameter and 500ft high keep. 4 80ft diameter towers at quadrant points around the circumference of the keep, which would form a 400ft sided square,  stand a full 100ft above the roof of the keep.

The gateway arch is a full 20ft wide and 30ft high. 4 guards in uniforms equivalent to the 1835 Jaeger Hessian uniform except in peach and black with silver stripes stand in 2 pairs either side of the arch. Each appears to have a Winchester rifle, a holstered revolver, and a sabre.
They don't appear to react as the car approaches.. do you want to stop?

soldier:
The soldier, having recognised the number plate, and not recognizing your name will say "Is this you first time here sir?"
Given that Cathal is likely to say "yes" then he will say.
"Can I ask you to drive through the tunnel sir, and then pull in on the right hand side, somewhere a little out of the way if you can, and then go into the Guard Office. The door which will likely be open, is the first one to right of the Gatehouse tower, between the tower and the gateway arch. Your companion should join you."

You drive through the gateway arch, noting not only the heavy iron bound doors, but the 3 pairs of 6" wide groves, the gap between each grove in the pair being 18". There are corresponding slots across the full width of the ceiling of the arch. There are also additional semi-circular openings in a regular pattern in the archway roof, along with slit openings in lines along each side, about 12ft down from the top of the arch. The archway not being lit will cause the Fulgents lights to come on automatically.
Exiting the archway you are confronted by the enormity of the structures in front of you. There are also 2 more pairs of guards stationed at the end of the archway. One has a Winchester and the other some form of heavy rifle with an odd cylindrical barrel.

Directly ahead of you, albeit about 150ft away, is what appears to be a level solid stone platform 50ft wide and 30ft high, with a 50ft wide (as in right to left as you look at it) stone ramp that leads down to ground level.
In a 50ft wide semi-cirle, in front of the platform, marked by 4 open sided semi-covered guard posts are 4 sets of 3 guards all stood at ease. 2 of the guards in each pair have Winchester rifles, but the third has some form of heavy rifle with an odd cylindrical barrel.
Beyond the platform sticking out from the cylindical keep is what could be another gate house, although it's difficult to tell from this angle. This gatehouse is about 200ft tall, with cylindrical towers at each corner that add another 50ft of height.

Off to your left, diagonally ahead and to the left of the Keep, is what could be the wall of an inner bailey. The wall is 350ft high, and at least 600ft in length. Two 70ft diameter tower protrude from the wall, one at about the 300ft mark, and the other at the far lefthand end.

You turn right and make your way carefully towards the tower that sticks out from the gatehouse wall, stopping just beyond it. Getting out, you make your way to the right hand side of the tower, where there is indeed a door, although it appears partialy closed. Passing through the door way you find yourself in a 30ft long, 3ft wide, 7ft high stone corridor, lit by three 3ft LED strip lamps one above each of the doors and one in the middle of the corridor. Passing through the second steel reinforced door you enter a 20ft wide, 10ft deep room, with what could best be described as an 'L' shaped serving counter 6ft beyond the door. The side of the 'L' 8ft to your left has a hinged flap that allows passage through an beyond the counter.

soldier:
As you enter one of the two soldier sat at desks against the far wall will get up, and ask you, "What can I do for you sir/madam"
Assuming you repeat the same statement as you made at the gate, he will ask you
1) Is this you First Visit
2) Do you have an Appointment
3) Can he see your passes

At the point where he can clearly discern your lanyards then his attitude will change.

He pickup the handset of a phone from beneath the counter, then dials a number, before putting the phone to his ear.
"Yes, this is the Main Gate Guardhouse. I have two of the new Royals here who would like a tour."
"No, their first visit."
He picks up the passes one at a time and looks at each of you for conformation that he's got your names correct as he pronounces them
"Prince O'Donoghue and Princess Kerrigan"
"No. The driver would have bought them in."

About 15 minutes later, Rhiannon will notice a figure running at a fair speed, not flat out but at a high jogging rate for a human, coming down the ramp, at the near the bottom Cathal will notice them as well. The figure will turn and head towards the guard house. As the figure comes closer, they will be able to determine that they are female, and that she appears to be carrying her scabbarded sabre in her hand.

When she gets to the car, she will salute the pair of you then bend over resting her hands on her knees. She appears to be breathing really heavily and is obviously sweating. She has the same uniform on as the rest of the garrison troops, except the insignia on her shoulders is 4 chevrons with a crown above.
Staff Sgt Melonie Harris:
"Please excuse me, but getting from the Command center to here in such a short space of time is not something that can be done with no effect. 24 flights of stairs, even if you're coming down them does take it's toll. I'll be alright in a minute or two, then we can continue."

Day 16 20 Juvax 45 : Down Time

[OOC: If you're interested in what the uniforms look like they're very similar to these https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...C3%B6tel_III,_35.jpg]

Cathal O'Donoghue:
"yes please, take your time, catch your breath." Cathal says. "You want me to ask if they have a glass of water for you at the Guardhouse." He offers.

Staff Sgt Melonie Harris:
"Thank-you both. And thank-you for the offer but I'm good."
As her breathing starts to ease she stands more upright and slides her sabre back into it's baldric.

As she does so you hear the echoey sound of lots of shod hooves approaching and about a minute late about a dozen horsemen ride out of the gatehouse and into the bailey turning towards you as they do so.
There are actually 13 mounted troopers, 2 at the front, then 3 ranks of 3, and then 2 at the rear. All except the front 2 at leading pack horses. The whole unit is moving at a trot, which seems to be the horses natural gait.
Staff Sgt Melonie Harris:
"They're early. Likely means they didn't encounter any refugees."

The whole unit once past the end of the ramp turns left and heads towards the rear of the castle.
Staff Sgt Melonie Harris:
"Right shall we get started?" She moves in the direction the troop of horse went.
"There's not a significant amount to see out here. Most of the buildings around the outer walls are barracks, from here around around to the third tower. All the stores and the outer bailey quartermasters office are back in the other direction, on the other side of the gatehouse along the front of the castle. It's the hardest part of the castle to shell or breach. "
Against the outer wall are a series of alternating 3 and 4 story buildings, each about 30ft wide and 70ft long. All have 60deg pitched roofs which slope down from the wall into the interior of the castle.
Once she gets level with the rear edge of the Keep she stops. Ahead of you and slightly to the right you can see the horse troop, unloading and unsaddling all of the horses.
"We send patrols out every 3 days. They're typically out for 6 days but that depends on whether they run into a refugee band or not. It's usually fairly quiet at this time of year, but can be a bit mad at first snow. We used send out 6 man patrols, but the last few years the refugee problem has got considerably worse and a 6 man team just can't cope"
"Pretty much all the buildings from here down to the corner", she indicates over to the far left "are stables, but only about half are occupied. We can't currently breed and train stock fast enough. Beyond the stables are the training grounds and gun ranges, although cannon and mortar training is down in an area to the rear of the castle. Avoids too many problems if something goes wrong."
Both Rhiannon and Cathal will note that Charlie is present apparently in conversation with one of the Garrison.
"Right that's the boring bit, now to what you've probably come to see, which unfortunately means climbing 24 flights of stairs. At least we get to use the elevator on the other side."
She backtracks around to the front of the Keep, then ascends the 12ft wide ramp to the platform at the top and then turns right and crosses the drawbridge that spans the 30ft gap between the platform and the gatehouse. You pass through an arched passage way about 80ft in length and 12ft wide into an entry hall, about 42ft square at floor level. 20ft above there appears to be a walkway surrounding the hall on 3 sides, with an overhanging set of merlons.
"This level is mostly stabling, and can has a capacity of about 50% of that of the stables."

She turns right through the open doorway in the right hand wall, the doors having been folded back against the walls. The doors on the far side of the hall from the entrance-way are similarly folded back.
Passing through another 20ft 12ft wide arch way she turns right and through another doorway, onto a 5ft wide spiral staircase. 23 sections of staircase and 360ft later you come out into a corridor which runs East to West across the tower.
She turns left and heads down the 12ft wide 11ft high arched corridor. You pass a number of steel bound oak doors until you pass through a pair of folded back doors into the narrower exit corridor (10ft wide and 9ft high and 30ft long). Exiting the corridor you come out onto an 8ft square platform and into a vast open dark space. Again there are a pair of steel reinforced doors folded back against the wall.
To the left a 3'6" wide staircase against the side of the keep descends about 15' to another platform before turning 180deg for the next leg of the descent. To the right is an 8ft square steel cage lattice structure supporting a 6ft square cargo elevator. This elevator ends at this floor, so there is winding gear above it. Outboard of this is a second elevator, which continues upward, but which can't be boarded from this floor.
Beyond the platform is a vast roofed space constructed in a similar manner to a modern sports stadium with steel trusses supporting the roof spans. There is no guard rail around either the platform or along the edge of the staircase.
390ft below glowing with a blue light, even in the artificial light that surrounds it, is the Pattern drawn or carved into the rock surface. As with the Pattern under the Mansion it is ovoid, about 260ft on it's major axis and about 180ft on its minor axis.

Day 16 20 Juvax 45 : Down Time

Staff Sgt Melonie Harris:
"This level of the Keep is mostly guard rooms, to control access to the floors above and below. The floor below, although technically its two floors down, are the function rooms, and reserve guest suites, although they're all empty. The two levels below those are the main guest suites, and two two below that are the kitchens, which serve those levels. The function rooms can be accessed via the appropriate guard rooms on this level, but to access the guest suites you either have to go via the function suite level or via the lower kitchen level access."

Staff Sgt Melonie Harris:
"The stairs go all the way to the ground but the elevator is faster. It also only has 3 stopping points, ground level, the 10th floor cross corridor, which is similar to this one, except there is no access to the outer bailey, and this one."
She pushes the call button and then pulls the scissor gate open. "After you."

Assuming you enter the elevator, she will close the gate, and then hit the 'G' button. The elevator descends fairly rapidly to ground level.
About 100ft away, glowing faintly in the gloom is the Pattern.
Sgt Harris heads off to the left, along the path which runs parallel to the edge of the Pattern about 50ft from it. Every 30ft on the left-hand side of the 10ft wide path is a 20ft tall lamp post with an LED ring down-light. Tucked into the corner on the left between the tower and the wall is a 3 story building.
After about 300ft the Pattern begins to curve away to the right and the first of the bank of substantial 4 and 5 story buildings against the left hand wall comes clearly into view, and another 30ft brings you alongside and into the floodlit illumination from above. Directly ahead and curved like the wall beyond is a huge 5 story building, the second floor of which appears to be glass fronted. The arrangement of the lights prevents you from clearly seeing the floors above.
Staff Sgt Melonie Harris:
"So the building to our left is the main Quartermasters stores, whilst the curved fronted building directly ahead is the command center. The Royal suites are on the Top floor, and the main command suite and officers mess is on the second floor. There are numerous other office scattered across various floors, with the majority of meeting rooms on the ground floor, along with the kitchens for the Officers mess."
"There is a separate Mess hall for the NCO ranks on the far side of the Pattern along the back wall of the inner bailey, which is where most of the barracks also are."
"Do you have any questions?"

Day 16 20 Juvax 45 : Down Time

Rhiannon was quite impressed with how complete a tour the Staff Sargent gave. She followed along, noting everything that was shown around the Palace grounds and especially inside. She turned away, but avoided sneering at Charlie when she saw her, focusing instead on the rest of the scenery. What she did take time to look at was the second pattern. She had exactly the same thoughts about it, wondering how there was a second and what that meant. The Melonie didn't address it, and probably had no clue, but it was a question for later. Similarly, Cathal covered her own question about Tiberius being married, but she was also sure that the mentioned queen was Siobhan.

"I don't know what else there is to see, but given how proper a tour you led, I'd say we're probably fine right here. Thank you. You were wonderful."

"The refugees come from Istria, why exactly we're not sure as we don't have an Embassy there, and as I understand things there don't appear to be any issues in relation to the running of the realm. We don't even know how they even knew Carnelian existed, as until about 18 months ago we didn't even realise the state was there. "
"There appear to be two routes they use, one along the coast, which seems to involve crossing a swamp and delta, whilst the other is inland and involves a couple of tricky mountain passes. In theory the inland route should be the easier, but that doesn't always appear to be the case. "
"Most of the time we pick them up what for them would be several days travel. Most have been traveling for between two and a half and 3 months, and nearly all are completely exhausted. If they're lucky they're also uninjured. Most are also dehydrated and near starvation."
"Of those that actually make it, most are resettled here, although some we do resettle in the Modern town. The lack of a common language is the most difficult thing to resolve, although their initial fear of mounted troops comes a close second."

All say approximately the same thing that they are looking for a better life because they feel they are shutout and have no future in their homeland. The problem is we have no means of verifying or quantifying this currently. There must be more going on but we have no idea what. That was interesting. From Melonie's description it sounded like The palace was in a different shadow than the mansion, and the people of Carnelia could travel between shadows by using certain pathways. That would explain the two patterns, but this wasn't the moment to talk of such things. It didn't sound like the Staff Sergeant was briefed on the workings of shadows. The more curious thing was the refugees coming from another 'realm'. It was as if the boundaries between the shadows here were blurred.

Cordelia says I should not pay face values to the Books about Amber I have read. But in these books there were an original pattern, the primal pattern and cased a reflection that was the pattern of Amber. And then there were the pattern of Rebma and Tir-na Nog'th, both considered to be reflections of Amber. At the end of the book Corwin created his own pattern."

"It looks to me that the pattern we just visited is an original made by Tiberius and this here at the mansion is a first reflection."

Day 16 20 Juvax 45 : Down Time

When Cathal walked into the lounge, Rhiannon smiled his way, then mixed him a drink like her own. Actually, she was done with hers, so she made another for herself as well. When he sat across from her, she slid it to him. "Kahlua and Irish cream, so it's like an Irish coffee and a Kahlua and Cream at the same time. Not too strong, but it's sweet and get you a pleasant mild buzz."

While Rhiannon was talking drinks, Cathal was all business. He opened with their earlier experience, calling out the twin patterns. "Well, Caw" She didn't actually like her name being shortened to Rhi or Rhia, but she understood. There were too many syllables for most people, even in Ireland, but turnabout was fair play. "Alana and Cormac both told me of the Zelazny books, some in great detail. I heard Cordelia say the same, so I didn't bother reading them myself, though I did find a few summaries. I had the same thought. I was confused when I saw the second pattern in the palace, but when Marjorie said they were different realms, I drew the same conclusion. It's interesting that the even in the books the original pattern is open to the sky, but the first shadow is kept in a dungeon. I wonder why that is. Maybe it's a coincidence? I don't know." She took a breath to sip her drink, thinking on the day.

"While that's interesting, I'm more intrigued by these refugees. It seems that there are paths that allow people in adjacent shadows to come here. I understand how members of the family could make those paths." She paused, holding up a finger. "No, wait, I don't yet know how that works, but I can believe that that can do it. What's interesting though is that this path appears to have been created on it's own. Strange, don't you think? I wonder if this is the result of broken shadow. I imagine this image of the pattern under a sheet of fractured glass. Not shattered, but with a spider web of cracks, spreading out in all directions. But also, it's under some strain, so some cracks get deeper, wider or even longer, while new ones are created. If there are these cracks that reach out into shadow, that could allow some to cross into other realms."

The more she thought about it, the tidier the theory felt. Sipping her drink, she stopped there to let Caw respond.

Day 16 20 Juvax 45 : Down Time

Cathal takes the drink. "Thanks."

"I'm not sure if someone from the family made that path or if it formed naturally. In any case it is worth inquiring. But first we need to clarify with Cordelia if this new Country is really on a different Shadow. This is what confuse me. The Staff Sgt knew that the Mansion is on a different realm. But claims that the new country is on the same as the castle. Which strikes me strange. Tiberius ought know what is in his realm and what not. so he either did no shared this knowledge or it came as a surprise to him too."

"Cordelia said that the primal pattern is still damaged. Could be that this damage allows for paths to form."

"What also is interesting is that the refuges took a way out of their country to the unkown? If Tiberius did no knew about how did the refugees knew. It sounds like a set up."

"Maybe he'd know." Rhiannon shrugged. "Our Earth is a planet in a solar system. It's big with lots of unknown places, even with billions of people that have cars, boats and airplanes. There are places in Ireland, right around Dublin that I don't know exists. How much time has Tiberius spent traveling and mapping his world?" She finished her drink and started making another.

"But let's say Istria is somehow new. Perhaps, as the cracks get more serious, whole sections of shadows might fall through. As awesome as our relatives are, they obviously don't know everything. Cordelia has said as much, and they tracked us down for a reason. "

Day 16 20 Juvax 45 : Down Time

Jade:
Arriving at 7:15, Jade, accompanied by a female about 20 years of age, about 5ft tall with long black hair is surprised to find Rhiannon and Cathal present,
"Oh I was expecting Miss Chan to be here. Rhiannon, Cathal, meet Sarah. I guess Miss Chan will make the formal introductions when she gets here."

Siobhan:
As Jade says this, Siobhan arrives, accompanied by her maid, who appears to whisper something to Siobhan.
Siobhan will take a seat in one of the arms chairs.
"Sarah why don't you come and sit next to me" indicating the chair next to her.
"If you want a drink Ling should be able to fix one for you."
"Jade, I'm assuming you were expecting Cordelia, if so I can manage from here, so thank-you for your assistance."

Jade will go to leave at this point but be delayed by Charlie arriving, carrying a plastic crate about 18" x 15" x 12"deep. Mai Ling will also leave once she's sorted out drinks for Siobhan, and Sarah if she wants one.
Charlie:
"Oh hi Sarah, when did you get here? Hope this isn't all too daunting for you."
"I have a bow for you. Not the best but it's the best I could get at short notice. I'll bring it with me on the morning."
"Now I have to wait for people before I can hand these out." She takes a bundle of $100 bills still in its US Treasury wrapper off the top of the crate.

Next to arrive is Cordelia, accompanied by the largest dog Sarah has ever seen. It's about the size and weight of a St Bernard, except everything about it indicates it isn't. (If you know anything about dogs then it's a Japanese Akita, not the American Akita which is Black and White because of it's breeding with the German Shepard after WWII, but true to the original Japanese line being red and white.) The dog is 50" at the shoulder, and 76" from nose to the base of his tail, the tail being approx 40" long and curled as it typical of Spitz breeds. Sarah estimate he weighs in the order of 300-350lbs. He looks neither overweight, nor fat, and has a clinical piercing gaze.
Cordelia:
"Sarah, apologies, I meant to get here earlier but got delayed by work. Have you managed to settle in okay?"
"I'll formally introduce everyone once they're all here to avoid having to continually repeat myself." She will then move to pour herself a Jack Daniels

About a minute after  Cordelia arrives Blake, Natalie, and Kenneth arrive, followed at minute intervals by Edward and Cassandra, then Winter, then Natsuki with Choki (A large dog who looks like a cross between a Rhodesian Ridge-back and a Rottweiler), then Alana, and lastly Cormac.
As they arrive they will offer general greetings to the room, and fix themselves a drink.

Cordelia:
Once Cormac has his drink, Cordelia will say "Can I have you attention please."
"So I would formally like to introduce Princess Sarah Williams-Barriman. She comes from a shadow akin to pre-industrial revolution America, so all this is very new and very challenging for her."
"Sarah can I formally introduce"
She will indicate the appropriate individual in turn
OOC: I'm using the same order as the library meeting as it means I can cut and paste and then edit easier
"Firstly, Prince Cormac Camerilli, a 3rd Yr Anthropology Major at Tampa State University, Florida. He hails from an alternate Earth Shadow where a Tsunammi devastated the Isle of Man, and the coasts of Ireland, Southwest England, and Wales."

"Secondly, Prince Kenneth Eday Elgrim. He's from True Earth, which was devastated by a number of events, including a full eruption of Yellowstone at the start of the Rodian War. He's spent a number of years surving in Big Creek, California, although life has improved somewhat in the last few weeks after I set up a recovery and restoration project for the town."

"The first of your female cousins, Princess Rhiannon Erica Kerrigan, 3rd year in Human Developmental and Regenerative Biology at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts. She hails from Mizzurian Earth, where a significant portion of my Corporation is based."

"The second of your female cousins, Princess Mei Li, or as she prefers her English name Winter. 1st year in Public Administration and Economics at University of Tsinghua, China. She hails from an interesting variant Shadow Earth."

"Princess Cassandra Troy who claims to be of no fixed abode, but hails from London,England and Fuengirola in Spain. Her specialty is Art. She's a native of yet another Shadow Earth."

"Prince Edward  Pinmillion, although Pinmillion is the surname of his adopted parents. He's playing at studying Business Management at NYU when he's not playing the playboy. He's also from Mizzurian Earth."

"Next we have Princess Alana Macfarlane and her Saker falcon Kasamir, who's likely lurking on the roof somewhere or one the Keep at the castle. She's a resident of Oban in Scotland on Mizzurian Earth where she lives with her game keeper father. She's currently in the final year of her A-Levels. Kasamir is a former resident of Amber, currently displaced due to the effects of the Rodian War."

"Prince Cathal O'Donoghue, currently at Cork University in Ireland also on Mizzurian Earth where he's studying Biological, Earth, and Environmental Science."

"Princess Hashimoto Natsuki and her Arden Hound Choki. They're from Rikuzentakata, Iwate Prefecture, Japan, although she's currently at Iwate University in Morika City studying Social and Environmental Systems and Majoring in Law. Again they hail from Mizzurian Earth."

"Prince Blake Hemsworth who'm my research indicates was born on the True Earth but since the end of the Rodian War has been a resident of the same Shadow Earth as Cassandra."
"And lastly my daughter Princess Charlotte Chan-Barriman"

Charlie:
"We've met already, in Elysium."
"Now my turn. For those of you who survived the little trip we made, I have the first part of your earnings. I need to know how you want the rest paid, either in coins, or in cash."
She turns to her mother
"I'm going to need the assistance of your friends in cashing the bonds."
From the crate she bought with her, which contains bundles of $100 bills still in their US Treasury wrappers ($10,000 per bundle), she takes out bundles and hands them out as follows, 3 bundles to each of Blake, Edward, Cathal, Alana, Rhiannon and 4 bundles to Cormac, Kenneth, Natalie, Natsuki, Cassandra.

Dinner will be called at this point, so further discussion will take place over dinner...

Day 16 20 Juvax 45 : Down Time

Rhiannon looked up as Jade walked in with her companion. She had never seen the shorter woman before, but Jade introduced her as Sarah, details to come later. "Hello Sarah, nice to meet you." She felt that this guest was someone important, possibly another cousin. If she was just a friend then she would probably have come in with whatever family member was responsible. When Siobhan came in and invited the woman to sit with her, that confirmed to her she was one of them.

When Charlie walked in, Rhiannon glanced over towards Cathal then made herself another drink. She actually didn't like being so triggered by Cordelia's daughter, but she couldn't the clench of her jaw or the tension in her shoulders at her arrival. Like it or not, the bitch was family, so she would have to find a way to get along with her at some point. Charlie seemed to already be good friends with Sarah, however, making Rhiannon wonder what magic their newest cousin possessed to be treated with such favor.

Finally, Cordelia arrived to make introductions. Rhiannon smiled and waved when she was announced, then waited for the Cordelia to get through the others. Somehow, their hostess seemed nicer this evening, maybe even having a lightness in her voice. The same went for Charlies, who was a bit softer and less standoffish in her demeanor. Rhiannon about rolled her eyes at the younger Chan's reference to surviving their trip, but raised her eyebrows at the stack of cash presented to her thereafter.

"Thank you." Her voice was more curious than anything. She held up one of the bundles of $100 bills, looking at it briefly before setting it back down. It was more money than she had ever held in her hand before, and was already thinking of the ways she might spend it. "Cash is always welcome."

At that point, dinner was called. Rhiannon finished her drink, then proceeded to the dining room. She left the cash on the bar, presuming this was the only place in all the world were she could leave $30,000 unattended and it would be perfectly secure.

Day 16 20 Juvax 45 : Down Time

In reply to GameMaster (msg # 162):

Sarah nodded to each of Cathal and Rhiannon.

"Nice to meet you," she said, sounding just a bit stilted, as if she hadn't quite gotten used to saying this phrase as a greeting.

When Siobhan arrived, she obediently moved over to sit in the chair indicated, but her attention was obviously focused on the two individuals she had just met. Charlie's arrival, however, brought a smile to her face, and she nodded enthusiastically at the offer of a bow.

"Thank you, Charlie. I look forward to trying it out."

Cordelia's arrival drew Sarah's attention next -- or, that is, the enormous dog accompanying her did. She didn't seem particularly afraid of it, but instead examined it with careful, curious eyes. She waved off Cordelia's apology, but her eyes flicked to Jade for just a second before answering Cordelia's questions.

"The afternoon has been... interesting," she said, obviously choosing her words very carefully. "I still have much to learn here."

More and more folks arrived -- including another dog -- and Sarah flicked another glance at Charlie. Soon, enough, however, her attention was focused on this new arrival, studying it just as carefully as she had the first.

When Cordelia officially introduced her, Sarah gave a little wave, clearly uncomfortable being the focus of everyone's attention. As Coredelia introduced each other person in turn, she gave a nod and a reserved smile to each -- clearly not understanding much of the descriptions beyond their given names and that they were all from other Shadows. Charlie, at the last, got a more thoughtful nod, accompanied by further curiosity as she began handing out bundles of paper.

"What is it?" she asked, glancing at Charlie first. It was, most likely, a stupid question to most of them, as everyone else present seemed to immediately grasp the importance of these things. Rhiannon's response drew Sarah's attention. "Cash?" A glimmer of recognition flickered across her face. "Oh -- like bills of credit!" From the way her expression soured, she did not have a very high opinion of such things.

When dinner was called, Sarah stood up, but did not move toward the dining room immediately; instead, she waited to walk in with Ling and Siobhan.

Upon Sarah's arrival Cathal politly nods a greeting her. "Welcome nice to meet."

Cathal reaction to Charlie is on par with Rhiannon's, he follows Rhiannon to the bar and get a double whiskey.

"Hurray someone more popular with our favorite relative then us." He whispers to  Rhiannon, drinks and refills. He turns to gets his money and place his stack on the bar too. More money then he ever had.

When dinner is called out he follows into the dinning room.

"Money makes the world go round." Cathal says with soft smile and than adds with a very sarcastic tone. "Fairly earned by proving to Charlie that Rhiannon and me are not worth her time."

Rhiannon was wondering if one of the men would take the lead on questions. When they discussed it earlier, she suggested Cormac or Edward ask, since Charlie tended to ignore her, but perhaps they wanted to wait until everyone was done with the actual eating. If no one did, she would step up, but Cathal beat her to broaching the subject. But broaching it was about all he did. She looked at him expectantly for him to actually ask one of the questions, but he just let it hang.

"There are actually a number of questions, and not all of them are related to that trip. But we can start there. When we were traveling over land, what should have taken hours and hours, actually only took a fraction of the time. How does that work? Are we shifting into other shadows to take shortcuts, or is it something more directly manipulating the shadow itself?"

"And once we got to Las Vegas, there were a couple times when Charlie seemed to compel someone to do what she wanted. We'd like an explanation of that." Looking at her cousins, she was hoping another of them would speak up and help. Ugh.

"And on the changing or influencing of probability, how does that work? Charlie indicated that it takes some time to prepare."

"The simplistic answer is yes on both counts."
"The truth lies in that both can be true at the same time although its not always obvious to the causual observer that you are changing shadows if there is enough similarity between those you are switching between, and alot depends on experience and familiarity with the route you are travelling."
"Now if we take the Mizzurian Shadow as a typical modern Earth shadow, then it is criss-crossed by highways, and tunnels all of which have very similar construction, and which may be the same or with such little variation for mile after mile, that it makes no difference."
"Thus if you alter some element of shadow such that it resembles that section of highway 10 miles further along, then you are in effect going to jump that 10 miles, without the need to change shadow. Sometimes the difference is enough to cause you to change shadow, but a second change immediately switches you back. The more experience and familiarity you have, especially with the destination, the faster you can make the changes."
"Does that make sense?"

Rhiannon Erica Kerrigan:
"And once we got to Las Vegas, there were a couple times when Charlie seemed to compel someone to do what she wanted. We'd like an explanation of that." Looking at her cousins, she was hoping another of them would speak up and help. Ugh.

"That's in the first part of the lesson plan I gave you on the morning of the Trump lessons. Those of your cousins who have Chaostite heritage would likely already be completely familiar with both how its done and how to at least attempt to shield against it, although the stronger mind will generally always win out."

Rhiannon Erica Kerrigan:
"And on the changing or influencing of probability, how does that work? Charlie indicated that it takes some time to prepare."

"Okay before I can explain how it works I need to ask you some questions relating to probability"

"You're walking down Broadway, what are the chances of you finding a Colt 45 Peacemaker revolver lying on the street?"
"For the sake of argument, you're walking through Halem, what are the chances of finding a 9mm discarded in a trash can in a side alley?"
"You're in St David's on the South West edge of Wales, what are the chances of finding a Maori tourist"
"You're in London, what are the chances of finding a Japanese tourist"

Halem finding a discarded 9mm in a trash can. In my eyes very likely.

Day 16 20 Juvax 45 : Down Time

"The point of the examples, and I will explain further in a minute, is that inorder to be able to manipulate probability you need to have a good idea of what the probability of an event occuring is and over what timescale, otherwise you can run into unintended consequences."
"Now most of the time you're going to want to increase the chances of a given event occurring, so when you're setting up a change in probability you want to phrase things or think of things in that way."
"So lets look at the examples I asked you about."
"So firstly the chance of there being a coin on the floor in the dining room this evening, very highly unlikely. None of you regularly carry coins, and the staff keep the place clean. So not quite a total improbability but certainly a very small chance."
"How about the chances of you finding a Colt 45 Peacemaker revolver lying on the street on Broadway? Well the Colt 45 Peacemaker is a historic weapon dating from the late 1800s. On the Mizzurian shadow they're generally only found in museums and in the hands of collectors. Broardway is one of the safest areas of NYC, for good reason. So the chance of finding one on the street, about the same as finding the coin previously, but I'll come back to this example later."
"How about finding a 9mm discarded in a trash can in a side alley in Halem?. Well any where there are major gang problems you're likely to find a discarded weapon of some description, and 9mm pistols of any description are the most common hand gun in the US, so this whilst not common would be highly possible. I'll also come back to this example in a bit."
"So how about the Maori tourist in St David's on the South West edge of Wales. Well I didn't know it was a surf hotspot, but I said tourist not surfer and Maori not New Zelander. So yes in surf season you might have a good chance of finding a surfer from New Zealand, and a lesser chance of them being a Maori, but much less of a chance of finding a Maori tourist, but significantly greater than the Colt Peacemaker."
"As Cathal said encountering a Japanese tourist in London is almost a foregone conclusion."
"The bank guard forgetting to load his sidearm, again its his job, but humans are fallable and sometimes they make mistakes or forget things. Any of you ever locked yourself out of your flat, or house, or dorm room?"
"And lastly to the deck of cards, and drawing an Ace, yes very easy to calculate the probablity, its 1 in 13, but how about if I'd said the Ace of Diamonds? Then it would have been 1 in 52. A minor shift in emphasis results in a faily significant change in probability, and I'll come back to this again in a minute.
"Okay then, lets look at your Las Vegas trip, what were you playing, Black Jack, Roulette, or slots?"
gm note:
I'm going to assume somebody says "slots" at this point

"Right so slot machines have a minimum payout frequency set by the US Federal Gambling commission, which is about 60%. Of course the machines are weighted towards the minimum pay out, after all a $2 payout is still a payout. They all also have a general trend in that the longer you play them the more likely they are to make a significant payout, although most people will give up long before this occurs. So I'm going to assume that Charlie was going for a jackpot pay out"
Charlie will nod at this point.
"Over what time period?"
Charlie:
"2 hours"

"So 10 of you playing slots for two hours."
"The manipulation here is going to be something like the machines being played by the group, and you have to have the whole group in mind at this point, will payout with increasing probablity over the next 2 hours until at least one of the machines pays out a jackpoint."
"You'll notice that I've been generic in several instances, I haven't set a rate change for the payout frequency, nor have I constrained to jackpot to a single machine, which actually reduces the probability of a jackpot since only one machine can payout."
"Now lets return to some of my earlier examples."
"The finding of a 9mm pistol in Halem. Using a 9mm is generic, using a 9mm Glock is less generic, more constrianing and therefore lowers the probability of finding one. You'll also note there are several things missing from this example, like working order, a pistol not a revolver, loaded, loaded with at least half a magazine, etc which all alter the probability of finding a gun, but just finding a gun may be of no use to you, whilst finding a working gun with half a magazine might be."
"Now lets look at the much more complex case, robbing the bank. If I wanted to rob a bank, at least the old fashioned way, there are several things I'd like, firstly that there was a decent amount of cash on hand, such as after a federal resevre drop, that the CCTV system wasn't working, that the guards had forgotten to load their weapons, and ideally that the police were busy elsewhere so that they had a long response time, if they responded at all."
"The chances of that occurring tomorrow would be remote at best. Next week, better but still remote. In a months time, probably pretty good, so that's what I'd do set up the scenario such that that conspiracy of unrelated events all happened on the same day a month from now. Now the scenario is not infallible or without risk, off-duty cops, have a go heros, freak weather event, might all still occur to complicate things."
"So the last example I want to return to specifically relates to Cathal's question."
"As I said the Colt 45 peacemaker is a historical weapon, it existed on a number of Shadow Earths, equivalent to the period 1873 to 1892 and a little beyond. Broardway probably also existed in some form at the same time. So if I'm hurrying down a street and suddently have need of a Colt 45 Peacemaker when I turn the corner onto Broadway, then somewhere in shadow there will be a place where than will be true, but it may not be anywhere where either I want to be or useful to me, so as I turn that corner because I set the event to happen I will no longer be in the shadow I was in but the shadow where the event would be true. I have by my own actions inadvertantly shifted shadow."

Day 16 20 Juvax 45 : Down Time

Sarah waited for others to sit, before taking whatever seat was left available. As Cathal and Rhiannon began asking questions, Sarah's attention snapped to them, following both the questions as well as Cordelia's responses. At Rhiannon's question about compelling someone to do something, Sarah's eyebrow went up, but she did not say anything. Instead, she seemed intent on following what others were sharing, and learning as much as she could about each person at the table.

The question about using Shadow-walking to influence probability -- and Cordelia's initial response -- didn't exactly make sense to Sarah; after all, she hadn't been on the expedition, and so didn't know exactly what Rhiannon was referring to. Still, she tried to follow the conversation as best she could.

Cordelia finished her example about firearms on broad paths, and Sarah jumped in with a clarifying question of her own.

"Wait. So... let's say I wanted to find a herd of white-hide deer, led by a full-rack buck," she said, choosing an example that made more sense -- at least, from her perspective. She glanced at the others for a second, realizing that she might need to explain why that was very unlikely. "White-hide animals are almost always the embodiment of a sacred spirit, and are almost always witnessed alone. An entire herd of such spirits, lead by a powerful buck, would be unheard of." She paused a moment with a wry smile as she recognized the unintentional pun she'd just made before she continued. "But... somewhere in Shadow, it exists? That herd exists? I could go into the forest of Elysium with the intention of finding that herd, and -- so long as I seek long enough -- I will find it?" She sat back, eyes wide and blinking at the multitude of implications.

"But maybe not," she said after a moment of thought. "Because the ocean is broken into lakes -- there might no longer be a path leading to the Shadow where that herd grazes? Or the path might be long and circuitous, requiring that I hop the droplets drifting across the dry land between the lakes?" She looked at Cordelia to see if she'd understood correctly.

Day 16 20 Juvax 45 : Down Time

"That's a somewhat loaded question and actually two subjects in one. There is a difference between seeking or searching for something, and changing the probability that you will encounter it."
"In your example a white hart is a rear occurance, but if you are in the right sort of envirnment then you could encounter one, and therefore could could manipulate probability such that you did. Now Albenism is a genetic throwback, and more often than not offspring of Albinos are normal, so the chance of finding a herd of Albinos would likely be impossible. Now finding a herd of deer such that as an environmental or survival adaptation they had lost their pignment, such as in the case of Polar Bears or Actic Foxes, although their coat changes colour according to the season, is a different matter."
"And yes, given that shadow is currently broken, the example relating to the Colt 45 which is an extreme one, would likely result in nothing happening, you'd turn the corner and there would be no gun and you'd still be in the same shadow and in the same predicament as previously."
"The basic rule is that if you push the limits of probability too far then you change shadow with potentially undesirable consequences."

Day 16 20 Juvax 45 : Down Time

Rhiannon Erica Kerrigan:
"Alright, that's helpful. So how does that work?"

Cordelia:
"Sorry how does what work? "

Cormac Camerilli:
"I think what Rhiannon means is can you explain how both defending the Caiman from bullets and locating it in the first place or locating the drug dealer work."

Cordelia:
"So why didn't she say that.? Her question was ambiguous."
"Using the Pattern as a defense mechanism is on of the most taxing uses of it, and it has two distinct forms, one which defends against non-physical manifesting forms of magic, and the other which defends against physical attacks. Both require almost total concentration to maintain. The physical defense version works like a shield, which can nominally be any size you like, but the bigger it is the more effort it requires to maintain. Like a shield it can only face in one direction at once, but unlike a shield it's facing can't be changed once created. Whilst it protects against physical attacks, including magical fireballs or lightening bolts, it won't protect you against some things, or things that are large enough to wrap around the shield, like a nuclear explosion, and even then whilst it would shield from the blast wave and shock wave, it wouldn't stop the radiation."
"In respect of locating the Caiman or the drug dealer, that's just finding an item in shadow. You define what you want and the Pattern will lead you to it, much as in the answer I gave Sarah in reference to her herd of White Deer. If you don't care where the object is then you can be vague in your definition, whilst if you have very specific requirements then these need to be kept in mind when invoking the Pattern in this way."
"All of the different uses have subtle differences in the form of the Pattern image used."

"No. it's just a constraint on the terms of the search, the same way you constrain a search in a search engine. The only difference is if it doesn't exist within the shadow specified then the Pattern won't be able to find it so you effectively won't go anywhere."

Sarah's expression didn't shift as she processed Cordelia's response to her comment, but she still obviously followed the rest of the conversation. At Charlie's comment, however, she raised a questioning eyebrow -- it was not clear if it was to the comments themselves or to some other aspect of the question.

At the exchange between Rhiannon, Cordelia, and Cormac, she took a deep breath, then let it stream out, slowly and silently.

"Would you please say more about 'the form of the Pattern image used'? What does that mean?" She was also tempted to ask about 'nuclear explosion' -- it sounded somewhat dangerous, like a landslide or earthquake -- but that seemed like a topic that could wait for another time.

"Because in a similar way you can use Logrus tendrils to attack people you can use filaments of the Pattern to attack people and destroy certain things, only in some ways it's vastly superior to the Logrus, because unlike Logurs tendrils Pattern filaments can't be seen, and in certain circumstances they are far more destructive. Buy why bother when you can just alter the probability of something bad happening in the next couple of minutes, like a meteorite smashing through the room next door? Your basic tasks initially will be to take some of the day-to-day load off people whilst you hone your skills, which principle means gophering, most likely in conjunction with somebody more experienced like Angel, Wyatt, or Gabriel."
"As to fixing shadow, since we can't get to Amber to determine why it's broken, how do you envisage that it can be fixed?"
"If you mean by 'fix it somehow' to take the day-to-day load off people so that somebody, and that is most likely to be my father, can make an attempt to get to Amber, then that would be correct. And we have even come to a definitive determination on that. There are too few of us with key skills, that taking any one of us out of the current equation is a huge risk."

"Why is this called gophering, though?" she wondered out loud; as she said it, a perplexed look crossed her face. "Gopher. Go-pher. Like 'go fer this, go fer that'? Hah." She looked somewhat amused by the pun in the name -- even if it wasn't correct.

"Not really. How long did India, China, or the US exist before any of the European nations knew of their existance or went looking for them? We had no need to go looking for Istria until it became an issue. How they knew about Carnelian we don't know, but the War was most likely a factor."

"Yes, When my father drew the Pattern here, there was nothing here, well the shadow existed, so he drew the Pattern in the middle of nowhere so to speak. The family then built the castle and the town to support it, as they weren't going to leave a Pattern out in the middle of nowhere. So whilst the Medieval town is older than the modern one, neither are that old in the grand scheme of things. A large portion of the Medieval town was also destroyed in the war, but has been mostly rebuilt since."

OOC: Sorry for the delay, I think I might have a kidney stone (or possibly more, given my symptoms...).

To Cordelia's mention of 'elephant', Sarah shook her head no -- then, after a moment of thought, switched to nodding yes -- then, after another moment, gave up entirely and glanced at Siobhan for help. Which, after yet another moment, she realized was not helpful, either. To Cathal's clarification, she nodded her definitive agreement.

As Cordelia and Cathal conversed, Sarah followed the conversation, which consisted of a mixture of new and old information. It was clear that she'd gotten a lot more instruction than the others about some portions of the history, but was lacking in other areas.

"I had heard of immigrants and travelers, but refugees?" She looked toward Cathal for clarification. "And books -- are you talking about the book of Selheim?"

Something Madison had said suddenly popped up into Sarah's memory, and her face screwed up in concentration.

"Madison mentioned the reflections... she said that the Carnelian Pattern had two of them -- one here, beneath the Mansion, and the one I assumed I walked at Tiberius' castle. But they're reflections of--" Sarah stopped abruptly, and looked around the table. Given Cordelia's earlier reaction to her knowledge about the Pattern beneath the Mansion, Sarah suddenly realized that perhaps some of this information wasn't actually supposed to have been shared.

Of course. Rhiannon didn't expect Charlie to suddenly develop any consideration for anyone. As far as she could see, Cordelia's daughter was the perfect example of a spoiled little princess, too wrapped up in her own self importance to think of anyone else. Rhiannon also thought it interesting that Cordelia had nothing to say on the matter. Nor did the Queen. It was as if no one wanted to upset the brat. But while she knew Cathal had left because he was simply disgusted with their cousin, she wouldn't be run out of the room so easily.

There is nothing in Cathal's post to say he has left. His post is vauge to say the least, "If nobody says anything more interesting Cathal excuses himself and leaves".
What may be 'intersting' to one person my be completely irrelavent to another.
Not only did the statement give neither Rhiannon or Sarah a chance to respond, and given that both are in the US on completely different timezones, the post is doubly unhelpful from their perspective, since any response they make is based on an assumption of what happened not on what may have actually happened.
It also didn't give any of the other PC/NPCs a chance to respond with something that may be of interest.

Additional as I added earlier as an edit. Rhiannon's post was not up on the system when I started writing Cormac's post, nor did the system give a warning that I was not replying to the latest post in the thread. Ergo the system potentially had two concurrent edits pending that neither of us knew about.

Cordelia:
"I have no idea why you think you are being routinely ignored. If you chose to take the correction of factually incorrect statements on your part as derision or scolding there is little I can do about it. Did you treat your university lecturers in the same way when they corrected a statement you made?"
"Similarly if you choose to make statments in the form of rhetorical questions, directed at third parties, and they choose not to respond, what is anybody else to do about it? Perhaps their complete lack of verbal response was the correct one in that it didn't further inflame a tense situation."
"Every question anybody has asked me has been answered. Just because you don't like the answer doesn't mean the question hasn't been answered. "
"Now in answer to your question about the connections between the two versions of Carnelian, they're called shadow paths, they can form naturally or you can, with a great deal of effort create them. In this particular case they came about when the reflection of the Pattern was ccreated."

"Your personal animosity to one another is not specifically my concern, as long as it doesn't spill over into physical violence, but your statement is based on a false predicate isn't it? If you remember what I asked my daughter to do at the breakfast meeting it was to 'take your cousins on an outing and show them what you could do with the Pattern'. I don't believe there was any onus on her in that statement to explain anything to you or teach you anything, unless you're questioning my comprehension of the English language? "
"The situation is now somewhat different in that I'm not throwing any parental spanners in what ever plans she had. If you also remember I asked her specifically to teach you all to shadow walk prior to the Ball and post her visit to the Expo, to which there was no objection, other than the fact she may consider it a chore, but then dealing with responsibility is a facet of growing up, and like you all she has to get used to her responsibilities, and not just those relating to her school."

"But... I'm also guessing that Charlie is quite proficient in using the Pattern in -- all the ways that came up as questions, so there is a method at the core. Still, if Rhiannon and Cathal are feeling disrespected by the experience, then it becomes less likely that they will help going forward, which... defeats the whole purpose of bringing us here and training us, right?" "And without more people to help, there's no chance of being afforded more freedom to do your own stuff... right?"

She nodded, however, to his comment about doing their part; she didn't really know either him or Rhiannon beyond what she'd heard from others and what little she'd seen at dinner.

Charlie's comment held a kernel of interest for Sarah; however, Rhiannon had more to say to Cordelia -- and, of course, Cordelia couldn't let it go without a retort of her own. Sarah waited for a pause in the conversation before turning back to Charlie.

"You mentioned changing the first shadow parameter?" she asked, trying to keep herself calm despite the upset. "What does that mean, and how is it related to Shadow walking?"

Cathal stays silent happily letting Sarah do the asking and get the put-downs. Not that he wants her to be put-down, it will happen anyway, but maybe she will get some better or at last polite answers.

It is an interesting question Cathal ponders if Charlie is a spoiled brat, brat definitive, spoiled in the sense of nasty character yes. She grew up knowing who she is and what those of her family are able to do.She behaves unfitting her standing, impolite, arrogant, talking bad about those who had not the fortune of her upbringing, considering her new family members as chores. A nasty brat.

Sarah Williams:
"Hmm," Sarah said, thinking back over what Cordelia had described earlier. "You mean like the appearance of a road that you're traveling -- so that it looks like you're further along than you should be? Or whether or not there's a musket lying abandoned in the middle of the road?"

"Yes and no. Changing the appearance, and in the right setting the decoration along the side a road would be valid, whilst expecting to find a musket is lying in the road is not. That's the sort of significant change that can throw you into a completely different part of shadow, completely unintended. There are just too many vaiarbles associated with the musket, and the musket being in the shadow, and the sort of ammunition and propellant, and the style and manufacture, and why it was there in the first place."

Sarah nodded to Charlie's response -- at least things seemed to have calmed down a bit.

"So it's more about focusing on the general appearance of the Shadow? And the musket thing would be more of the probability shifting Cordelia was describing before." She paused to consider this before continuing. "So... we focus on something specific that we want to change -- like maybe the kinds of trees, if we're in a forest -- and then just walk? Until the trees match what we're looking for?" Sarah didn't know if she was on the right track or not, but at this point she just wanted to continue having civil conversation.

"Sort of. You need to have in mind where you want to be and where you are now and then slowly change things to match. There may not be any trees where you want to end up, or they may be very sparse in amongst fields, but if you're starting in a forest of spruces and pines, and there's just a few oaks where you want to end up, then you maybe you need to change the spruces and pines to some intermediate species, or to a different species which grows in different climatic conditions where oaks might grow with them, which means you're going to have to change the terrain, and definitely the climate. It can all get very complicated very quickly."

"That sounds like quite a bit to keep track of," she said, clearly concerned at her ability to do so. "Do you have any suggestions on getting started -- given that I'm completely new to it?" Sarah deliberately spoke only for herself -- not just because she honestly didn't know if the others would want her speaking for them, but also just to avoid reminding Charlie that they would be along. At the moment, she seemed to be in a mood to answer questions, and Sarah did not want to jeopardize that..

"To be fair, Charlotte, the last time you were charged to tutor us, there was little in the way of explanation. It left us to have to decipher what was important and what wasn't. If the goal is to ensure we can assist in the important work ahead, then it's incumbent upon you to make sure we are all properly trained. If you fail that, then we all lose. We are willing students. Of course. Cordelia will defend her daughter against all criticism. Rhiannon was sure that Cordelia somehow felt that was being supportive. The fact remained, showing without explaining or teaching was almost a meaningless exercise. The spirit of the request was for those in attendance to learn something. But whatever. Conscientiousness was apparently not a valued trait among Amberites. It was clear that these people were more about their own egos than actually solving problems. It was no wonder things were still broken.

"I should probably just keep my mouth shut, and be a good little princess, but I'm done with that. Charlotte, you are an entitled brat. And you're a bitch. Putting aside the rudeness I've endured from you from the very beginning, if someone asked me to show someone what could be done with a CRISP/R, I wouldn't simply have them watch me put a tray of samples into the device and then hand over the data results. Teaching is implied. I'd explain the samples, and the goals. I'd explain how the machine worked and how to use it. Then I'd elaborate on the final reports. In other words, I'd make sure that those who were looking to me for guidance came away with a positive and meaningful experience.

The fact that you can sit there and defend yourself by fixating on the semantic difference between show and teach means that you aren't taking any of this seriously and that you are the worst person for this job, no matter what your skills are. Not only that, your attitude alone has created all this animosity, so again, you prove yourself unfit.

And Cordelia. It's laudable that you would defend your child, but by doing so in that way, you also dismiss our concerns. Do we actually matter? How difficult is it to be considerate and understanding? If we are to work together, this is a terrible start."

Sarah nodded at Charlie assessment, and managed to keep her face neutral as yet another unhelpful volley was exchanged between Charlie and the pair of Cathal and Rhiannon. Then Cordelia jumped in -- and while she was correct, in the strictest sense of the word, Sarah didn't really see how it was a particularly helpful addition to the conversation. For the first time, Sarah felt like she'd fallen into a hollow full of frustrated porcupines. She very much agreed with Siobhan's outburst, but somehow she knew that wouldn't be the end of it... and, of course, it wasn't.

Biting back on her own comments, Sarah turned her attention to the food. Charlie's departure meant she wouldn't be able to ask any more questions in preparation for tomorrows lesson, but maybe that was for the best.

Cathal shows no reaction to Charlie's word, no signs of satisfaction for her showing her true face or her leaving the table.

He does no think for one moment that he can change Cordelia's opinion or decision, but as Rhiannon he is fed up being belittle by Cordelia and treated like dirt by Charlie.

To Siobhan he says. "I apologize for unsettling the table." He owes that to Siobhan.

He turns to Cordelia.

"We are send out tomorrow with an unwilling, disinterested teacher. Who will do only the bare minimum to follow the words of your request. Who treated us like dirt on the first trip. Whose favourite answer to questions is ' If you're not interested then you're welcome to return to the Mansion.' And you expect us to learn something from her tomorrow.

I do not put much hope into the trip tomorrow. You should not be surprised if what she is expected to teach will not reach the students and we have the same discussion again tomorrow evening.

Yes I provoked her. I had enough of her attitude. And I have enough of being belittle and being put-down if I do not understand something the first time or do not remember correctly.

I'm not calling for a perfect teacher or even a good one. I'm calling for an understanding that the process of transferring knowledge includes question and yes also question that seemed to have been answered. Variations of 'I told you already.' are not helpful. They are belittling and will lead to the point where the student will stop asking questions at all, loose interest in the topic or plain out ignore the teacher."

"So not really the level of detail you describe but more of a superficial outline of what you were doing then? And you'd be there for every single one of them, and not there to sell the machine?"
"You say there was all this time for Charlotte to explain things, so she spent the whole time lounging in the back doing nothing whilst you drove giving you a completely unobstructed view of everything that was happening, and being completely familiar with all the roads and terrain you were crossing you could tell when it was being changed? And since you were driving Cathal must have been using the Pattern to take you where ever it was you were going?"
"Or was the reality somewhat different? Charlotte was both driving and maintaining the Pattern to take you where she wanted to go, and you had no idea where that was and no familiarity with where you were going, so you wouldn't have had any idea of what was actually being manipulated?"
"In a similar vein, you can use Pattern Sight can't you, and you can do so whilst walking around a room on your hands and hold a conversation at the same time?"

"That's a question at the moment I don't really know the answer to. It was semi-planned that Charlotte would teach you all to Shadow Walk, and the arrangements were all left down to her."

Alana Macfarlane:
"Kasamir says he saw her talking to the Horsemaster at the castle yesterday afternoon if that helps any."

Cordelia:
"It does help some, as generally she wouldn't need to talk to him, she has her own horse here.""I suggest everyone proceeds as expected and meet at the Castle Gatehouse at 10am as planned."

Cormac Camerilli:
"Hang on. Did I just miss something? What involvement would the Horsemaster have in all this?"

Cordelia:
"Well, since the most convenient method of crossing shadow other than by ship is on horseback, as they work everywhere you do, then most likely she was arranging horses for all of you."

Cassandra Troy:
"Riding??""What if we've never ridden before? Do we get some basics?"

Cordelia:
"Then you get to learn very quickly, as I did. At least you won't have Natalya who though it was fun twelve hours in to go Hell-riding and expect everyone to keep up."

Cormac Camerilli:
"Right, so not only do we have to learn to Shadow Walk we have to learn to stay on a horse at the same time? And how long is this likely to take?"

Cordelia:
"I've no idea, but there's 10 of you, so I would expect two or three days probably, allowing for each of you to be able to get some sort of supervised practice, something I never had."

Sarah nodded. "I've heard she plays pranks... of a sort." She didn't know much more than that, but given that Cordelia had been the target of the prank she'd heard about, she was curious if Cordelia would expand upon what she'd already said.

"Pranks are what she calls them, on account she thinks they're funny or amusing. The victims on the otherhand don't see them that way as they're generally designed to either embarress and/or humiliate those she perpitrates them on."

Day 16 20 Juvax 45 : Down Time

Sarah's face screwed up with discomfort.

"That sounds... unpleasant," she said. She was aware of such 'pranks' and how harmful they could be to the one on the receiving end of them.

"That's a good question, one which we don't have a definitive answer to."
"After Dworkin, and our Grandfather, Natalya probably knows more about the Pattern than anybody else, and that includes my father. She's also very attuned to the Amber Pattern, which is what we believe the connection to be."
