Nice to be here! I of course am interested in exploring the mechanics of the game as much as my character explores the mechanics of the universe itself!

My character has come a long way from fixing relic Xboxes to working on starships! If I read the skills right he should also be able to fix things like comms devices, magic wands that have gone on the fritz, and advanced chemistry homework.

Mechanics will fix technology-based items but Mysticism will fix magical items.

If you have both Cipher (renamed from Computers) and Mechanics, you can fix most machines both hi-tech and low-tech.
If you also have Piloting and Physics, you can operate most of them as well.

Alchemy also helps as it allows you to create substances like glue, lubricant, fuel, food, etc.

I'll grow into the last set as a secondary! Mechanics scamper about in small spaces. Infiltrator suits well, but that will take a few levels to get up and running... Or I can shift over to infiltrator and pick up some of the mechanic skill later. Party have preferences?

This game has no classes, but general concepts on which attributes and skills you focus on do help. But the neat thing about no class means you guys have a lot of flexibility and can keep adjusting your characters until we have a full crew ready for takeoff.

Game might take a few more days or so. We'll see how fast more players come in. I want a minimum of 4 per team, but preferably 5.

Looks like we have a well-rounded crew. Only thing I see us missing is a Survivalist (Nature, Survival, Taming) and a Doctor (Alchemy, Medicine, Nature).

Anyone with plenty of skills want to multitask into these roles? You don't have to, just asking.

I can multi. I will take extra skills for it. No issue. Taming works with his cha focus, and I can just pick up survival and nature as skills that stem from hobbies like butterfly, geode, and other nature collecting.

Or both. The update grants you 5+INT trained skills at 1st level instead of just 4. Its just your skill boosts from level ups that are now restricted to a set number. So you'll specialize in only a few but a high INT means you start with a lot of trained skills.

Just FYI if you still see typos in special abilities I'm still working my way down the list. A lot of them haven't been labeled powers or traits yet. Multitasking with work and IRL stuff but we're getting there.

Midjourney uses prompts and cannot read sentences very well. Prompts would be like:


"Giant Red Robot with Laser Cannon" or "Cyborg Centaur with Skeleton Face" etc.

I can come up with prompts based on your description. You're just more likely to get what you want if you provide the prompts.

Google drive won't work with RPOL image coding. So you'd have to save the image, upload it to a site, and then link to that to put it in your profile.

I'm working on a lot of background stuff for Starslinger so I don't have time to do that myself but I can put it on my to do list eventually. Might be a little slow though.

I can get pics for the whole crew as I'm approving sheets.

RPoL doesn't support image uploading outside of the game map function.

You have to use a 3rd party image hosting service, like imgur, then use RuBB code to insert the image.

RPoL faqs (rubbcode)

The code doesn't accommodate things like image resizing so you'll also want to make sure the image is scaled and such appropriately as needed before uploading it to your image host of choice.

I beg to differ.  With all the reports of abductions and anal probing, I'm pretty sure porn is exactly WHY they do come to Earth.  They're just the perverts of their species.

I really like how quick draw already accounts for doing the opposite with it. You can pick up an item and store it in an obvious place or you can unstore an item and use it as long as it was obvious before. The enhancement is even better though. At that point the character can get away with merely having the object somewhere on their person. Which means that for the purposes of the character, I can have them quick draw any tool that they're working with and work with it as part of the same action which only makes sense when they can get 6 hours worth of work done in a few seconds by spending a search on rapid repair.

The real issue is, is it an enhancement to rapid repair to perform rapid sabotage? Can I spend a surge offensively to do 6 hours of destruction to their systems... Requiring no official tools or resources?

I also feel like rapid repair might just be what I do all the time rather than spend hours on the phone with technical support when I make sure that my cables are all connected and that I've turned it on properly. Is anyone aware of James Bond type movie where the Doomsday machine doesn't work because it wasn't charged properly or the villain forgot to plug it in? Because I feel like bad guys don't have these issues. Maybe that is just the better class of villain he works against though.

Yeah quick draw is more useful than people usually think.

Hmm, damaging objects isn't measured in time, but fixing and repairing is. Translate that, fixing an item essentially "heals" it at the same rate as bashing it really hard with a big weapon. It normally takes hours of work to undo 6 seconds of violence but Rapid Repair essentially allows you to equalize that at the cost of focus.

Essentially you're able to sabotage it with Int (Mechanics) and a mechanics kit at the same rate someone could do so with Str (Brawn) and a hammer or Dex (Marksmanship) and a firearm. Your destruction is the result of pinpointing vital systems rather than large gaping chunks of it being shattered or incinerated.

What's more likely? A species using vauble resources and travelling millions of miles through space for sex tourism, or humans lying about it? I know humans travel far distances in order to indulge such things...because they are human.

If a special ability is "item" instead of "innate", it's gear.

The nifty thing about gear is that you can swap it out for other items while in an area of trade (assumed through trades, buying/selling, etc.) whereas you're stuck with innate stuff until a story reason comes along to swap it and typically requires a lot of time retraining. The only drawback to gear is that it can be disarmed, stolen, or broken, meaning you have to wait until the next time you get to a merchant to buy a new one.

Trivial gear like a basic short range communicator, clothing, identification, digital wallet, pens and pencils, and pretty much anything you'd have in a normal office drawer, pockets, or household supplies can be assumed.

Jhenko, NOD, and Val all serve as NPC merchants that provide different products and services. Both Lance and Val can also be brought along on missions as backup if need be.

FYI everyone pick a primary and secondary role on the ship. Obviously the captain is primary coordinator but he's an NPC so a PC coordinator is extremely helpful. Looking to make sure we have a good spread.

COORDINATOR
Provides motivation and organization to the crew and between ships
Skills: All Wisdom and Charisma-based skills plus Insight

ENGINEER
Controls the energy production and flow of the ship
Skills: All Intellect-based skills plus Piloting

GUNNER
Controls one or more weapon emplacements
Skills: Marksmanship, Perception, Physics, Piloting

OPERATOR
Uses ship systems to locate, monitor, interfere with, and disable the enemy
Skills: Insight, Investigation, Mechanics, Perception, Physics

PILOT
Controls the movement and tactics of the ship
Skills: Marksmanship, Perception, Physics, Piloting

SECURITY
Security guards handle threats from within the ship such as fighting off invaders and mutineers. When no threats are present, they aid engineers and technicians by doing heavy lifting and deliveries and manual overrides using brute force when systems fail.
Skills: All Dexterity and Strength-based skills, plus Intimidation

SUPPORT
Support serve as co-pilots, assistant engineers, assistant operators, etc. They fill every role but only as a secondary. Rather than rolling checks to operate the ship, they roll to assist someone else who is operating in the hopes that their teamwork will achieve greater results.

Coordinates the defenses of the ship including running the shield projectors

As long as you have most of the skills it's fine. The only one that NEEDS piloting is pilot. The skills listed are the recommendation for maximum success.

Breaking character to explain this, it is very important. Gill/Turd is never being entirely mean. The thing with Val was meant as a set up, the punchline was when someone said something to defend her. I was honestly expecting that to be Skip, but Edwin is a fun foil too, so 6 of one of 1/2 dozen the other.

My point is that Gill is like everyone's obnoxious big brother. He will tease you taunt you and metaphorically knuckle rub your skalps when its just us. When there is an outsider, he is the first to stick up for any of you, he purposely makes himself a target to draw fire from all of you, and all of you are 100% certain that he would take a bullet for you (and rub it in forever, but hell that is part of his charm). Please keep that in mind when interacting. He does all these antics for your benefit, even if it doesn't seem like it. Underneath the sarcasm and bombast he is one of the bravest mother fuckers out there and he is on your side.

"Force" damage doesn't exist in Starslinger. But you could recreate it by doing multiple other damage types. Closest I can think is bludgeoning + either sonic or ion damage.

Ammo rules are simplified. You just keep using focus until you run out and refocus or you roll nat 1 on your attack and have to unjam/reload.

If you keep shooting the assumption is you were able to reload fast but times when you need an action to do so are when it jammed, or you fumbled, or just weren't 100% slick at the moment.


Makes it easy to remember and not get bogged down by tracking ammo.

Question: When an ability lists a Prerequisite like "Wisdom, (Guard or Perception)"

If it lists 1 or more Attributes, does that mean you have to have a particular score in that attribute, or does it mean something like you have to be trained in that attributes defense/savings throw?

I assume if it lists a skill you have to be considered trained in said skills(s)?

PREREQUISITES
Some abilities require you to have other abilities first. Some may have an attribute or skill listed. Your ability tier cannot exceed your attribute modifier or skill proficiency bonus (+2 if trained, +4 if expert, +6 if master, +8 if legendary).


So if it says "Wisdom, (Guard or Perception)" that means the maximum tier you can have in that special ability is equal to your Wisdom modifier or the greater of your Guard or Perception modifier.

So if your Wisdom was +3, Guard +2, and Perception +0, that would mean you couldn't have more than a Tier 2 version of that ability.

Waiting for Jakova and Osram in the Brink of the Verge thread.

Ya'll wiped that threat in 1 round and not everyone has even acted yet. Good thing everyone took skill boosts of some sort.

There's still 2/4 of those objectives available so even though immediate threat is subdued, the encounter is still ongoing and each objective drops XP on the party. If people are near a level up I'll drop XP as we go but otherwise I wait for end of encounter.

Also, FYI folks:
  • do not Rmail me when you can just reply to an existing PM
  • do not make start new PM threads with me, just reply to the existing one
  • do not PM me for something you could've dropped in the OOC

PMs are just for Character Creation/RTJ, stuff you don't want the other players to know about, and story stuff that you're not sure if it'll work or not.

Everything else, including stat questions should be dropped here. That way, when I answer questions, everyone gets the answer and I don't have to repeat it so many times.

I feel like mysticism should have flavors... A houngan/mambo is different than a devout cardinal or a quantum physics technician. They might call things very different moreso if wizards, witches, sorcerers, warlocks, or enchanters are a "real thing".

I'm sure you could put specialties on skills like Mysticism (houngan/mambo) or Mysticism (catholicism) or Piloting (Jets) or Piloting (Roller Bike) etc.

I haven't gotten quite that deep into the stats yet though.



Also, another FYI: Do not post out of order. You get ONE post between GM posts during encounters. Each post is a turn. Wait until the round is over before you try to post again. After 3 days we move on if someone didn't take their turn.

Outside of encounters it doesn't matter but during it needs to be tracked.

Hey folks, if I ask you for a roll and you don't roll and put the roll in your post, you automatically get a critical failure. I can't stop for a player who wasn't paying attention on their turn b/c this is PBP and every delay could take days.  It's your responsibility to pay attention in a cooperative storytelling game. So can I choose to dedicate this turn to that use of rapid repair again? It feels like the system was meant for multiple actions in a turn and the character could devote multiple actions in one turn to the rapid repair but that it was only good for one round of rapid repairing. If there's only one action per turn then it would then stand to reason that I could continue to devote turns until I've donated a maximum of three turns to rapid repair per time that I use a surge and spend a focus point?

Does defiant heroics ability kick in when I spend my last bonus surge? Is it a chance at infinite surges or is it just a chance at a one more surge that day?

Threat levels will come in faster though for more swing if people don't devote actions to repairing the ship or helping someone else do so.

But yes, if you want to continue to devote actions from turn to turn you can do that.



Its a chance that when you spend your last surge, you still have a temporary surge left to spend. Because it gives you a temporary one, it can't be infinite.

You have to spend your last surge and theres a chance it gives you a temporary surge but not a normal surge.

So no, there's no infinite growth there.

However, upgrading it means you can apply it to your 2nd to last surge, 3rd to last, etc. at higher levels, essentially meaning you have a 50% chance of every surge actually being 2 surges but only if you spend them all in the same encounter.

Thus defiant heroics could make you a total Bad@$$ in a scene but you'd burn through your surges and temp surges pretty quick and be spent.

Quick Questions. Transformation is a 2-Action Activation...Then Phasing is a 2-Action Activation. Does that mean in order to go Shadow(Ethereal) and follow Imp, it would take 4 rounds as we are currently playing? Note: that is a question based off the two above posts stating that we are doing a 1-Action per Round setup at the moment.

OR does the Phasing Automatically activate? I know that the cost would be 4 Focus for Transformation and 3 Focus for Phasing, making it a grand total of 7 Focus.

Hey, just FYI your checks are getting the job done. The difference between immediate fixes and 2 hours of work are that you don't have to repair the ship again.

Everyone else's fixes are temporary just to keep the ship afloat during the encounter but normally you'd have to dock and spent time making permanent repairs afterwards. Your fixes are the same as having it professionally done rather than patched up in a hurry, thus saving on repair time and costs after the encounter.

Yes, I'm still working on the economy of the system (credits, buying items, etc.) but once I have that settled you'll automatically start with credits appropriate for level + whatever you've picked up along the way.

I'm building an influence system so that you can literally create a web of influence with NPCs as well.

An NPCs attitude towards you determines the price for their services and each NPC can provide different benefits.

If you do them favors (fixing ship for lower cost) they typically return the favor (free stuff/discounted stuff) etc.

That's the idea. It's still in the works. Juggling IRL stuff and other games though.

FYI, R-chi1 quit the game. There was another player who quit during character creation but they never even posted in the OOC.

We're down to 6 PCs total which is a nice-sized crew. Less wait time for the rounds now but we have less engineering help.

Which reminds me. Make sure you're all entering your dice rolls properly. It's not fair to me to have to dig through a bunch of unnecessary rolls to figure out which ones are correct. If that becomes a pattern, I'm just going to dismiss such rolls as automatic failures.

  • GM posts round 1 and then waits 3 days (72 hours) before posting next round.
  • If a player posts, this timer is reset.
  • As soon as everyone has acted or the timer runs out, the GM posts the next round, NPCing anyone who didn't post within the time frame.

I think that 48 hrs should be enough time for informing GM npc actions for players (like if I expect to be out for a while but want my character to do some specific things). I would make a post and an ooc to inform absence duration and character action intentions (or official clearance to just assist group as possible).

Yeah, I liked the idea of being able to draw tools and use them, then next turn use them and put them away to keep a tidy workplace. Incidentally it also lets me stow loot we find as a single action. You never know when it might be needed but for freelancers... it probably WILL come up.

I can also pass out weapons or supplies quicker than most because of it, if I am reading it right.

"Pass out"? As in hand to others? Well, in theory you're reducing your draw time so kinda? You could hand an item to an ally as a single action as normal, but drawing it from your person is free allowing you to pass out 3 items in one round to allies within reach. So yeah, that is an added perk if you're kinda the quartermaster of carrying specialized gear that everyone else doesn't carry.

Andre or whoever is down there with him and still has an action: grab the little Nintendo Switch controller thing. and or smash the shit out of it.

Now the why. I think I have this thing figured out, partially. There is only one of the Gremlin things. I had thought there were two, and the one on the bridge had some kind of cloaking device. After rereading some of the GM's posts, I think there is only the one down with Andre. I think the game controller isn't just a communication device, it is literally creating the game on the bridge. It makes sense, if you could do this and the range was short you would find a place within range to hide and screw with people. The thing that really tips this off is the prize list that includes Edwin and Gill's souls. The point, I think, is to trap these souls within the Switch controller and then use them for something later.

Okay now that I have said this you guys are all like, Yea dumy, we knew that way back when this whole scenario started. Way to go Sherlock. To that I say, yea you are right I'm slow on the uptake.

Yes, it's Unluck Aura is designed to protect it from most close-range threats. There are ways around it. The effect wears off when you leave the room and you get a new save upon re-entering but that's a lot of wasted actions and no guarantee that another save will work. Of course, if too many foes succeed and surround it, it'll run away to re-activate the aura (which is why it fled into the walls the first time).

There was something about a diplomacy check of some sort to negotiate a little more pay for the rapid repair... Is the doubled credits for the repair team brought in before or after the possibility of that math? Are those credits direct deposit or do they come into play after the whole party gets paid in story?

Being trained in mysticism of the quantum sciences variety, if you want to lay down some information I can try to evaluate how my character would interpret that data about our gremlin, or you might simply declare that this is not something that that quantum science covers. Modern quantum science is a little vague on absolutely everything.

Any time your character is paid or trading, a diplomacy check is always an option to negotiate for more. And vice versa when buying stuff.




Advanced Quantum Physics is where Physics and Mysticism start to overlap.

If you want to learn more about the creature, you can spend downtime to study it and then make either a Physics or Mysticism check. (assuming it stays on the ship long enough for downtime)

Mysticism will get you the lore while Physics will just give you the "how it seems to work". Having both is ideal, but either or will work.

At the moment, the Gremlin is just a battery that can talk until it's released again. If there's ever a situation where you need energy pronto, he's an ace up your sleeve.

So in absence of either a black hole or an exorcist, we're not even sure if we have reliable methods of getting rid of it while it is still contained. Dropping it in a star might work but the passive electricity of the ionized radiation that exists in different levels of a star might just turn the thing into a god, could also short it out and turn it into nothing.

Sealing it up for now and then seeing what happens over the course of business- maybe we come across a black hole or an exorcist, or maybe Andre will have to study it to figure out what's actually going on and how it CAN be dealt with.

No you don't need to roll again. We're just waiting on Andre.

Since this is a skill challenge rather than an in-person combat you just need 1 check per post and a description of what you were trying to do.

Success will reduce threat level, remove threat creators from the scene, add additional mission objectives, and/or resolve an objective based on success/failure but also what tactic you chose.

For example, if you INTIMIDATE a vengeful foe into compliance (rather than diplomacy or bribery) you may get (objective complete) XP but also a new objective (avoid inevitable betrayal) during the next scene where they're involved.

Whereas using DIPLOMACY to flirt with the 7'1" orc woman who really likes you may result in (objective complete) XP but also (bonus ability: +1 Minion) and (achievement unlocked: Snu Snu) and possibly a condition (condition: broken pelvis).

If we're at the "moving on" point where you'd be advancing to the next round regardless, I'm perfectly fine with that.  Not keeping a consistent pace can be absolutely fatal to a PbP game.

Things happen, people forget, get busy, etc and it would be hard for you to roll worse on our behalf than we're currently doing.

By the way, don't forget to occasionally use your surges if things look bad. Surges are like Pathfinder Hero Points or D&D Inspiration.

After every encounter you gain a surge unless you're already full. If you stay full on surges you're essentially missing out on easy boosts.

By the way I've cleaned up the action system a bit.

TLDR:
  • You can take as many actions/checks on your turn as you want.
  • Each one you make after the 1st takes a cumulative -5 penalty (-5 for 2nd action, -10 for 3rd, -15 for fourth, etc.)
  • If you critically fail any your turn immediately ends and you lose the ability to take reactions until the start of the next turn. (which really sucks if people are shooting at you and you can't dodge)
  • You might not know if you failed or succeeded so be aware that some of your later actions might get cut off/undone.
  • It's better to guess and roll the wrong thing than to post without rolling during a skill challenge




ROLEPLAY vs. ROLL-PLAY
Everything is roleplayed and doesn't require any rolls unless:
  • The GM asks for rolls (ex. skill challenges)
  • You try to harm or manipulate a creature, complex device, unfamiliar object, or something key to the narrative
  • You try to move past, enter, or escape an obstacle, grapple, melee, or scene
  • You try to gain information, assets, or influence

ROLLING DICE
When you do roll, you follow a simple process for each action you take.
  1. Choose a course of action you could reasonably accomplish in 1 round.
  2. Choose a target within range of your action to be affected by it.
  3. Choose a skill most appropriate to accomplishing your task and add your modifier to that skill to a d20 roll. Be sure to include any temporary modifiers such as bonuses or penalties.
  4. Roll any appropriate effect dice such as damage or healing (if any).
  5. Describe your turn taking this action in a way that does not presume success or failure. For example, you'd say "I shoot at the orc" rather than "I shoot the orc" or "I move towards the exit" rather than "I exit the building" and so forth.
  6. Resolving the roll: The GM will let you know about any bonuses or penalties and explain the result of your attempt.
    • Critical success (nat 20 or beat DC by 10+): you gain the desired effect plus a bonus helpful effect.
    • Success: you gain the desired effect.
    • Failure: the action is wasted.
    • Critical failure (nat 1 or failed DC by 10+):, you waste the action, your turn immediately ends, and a harmful effect occurs such as you dropping your weapon, falling down the stairs, getting sniped by an unseen foe, losing your reaction for the round, etc.
You can take as many actions and rolls as you want but accumulate a -5 muliaction penalty for every action you take after the first (not including reactions).

For example, if you want to shove an enemy out of the way (Brawn check), charge past them (Acrobatics or Athletics check), shoot the window (Marksmanship check), and jump out the window (Acrobatics check) you would be unable to do all this in 1 round as this requires 4 checks with the second check taking a -5 penalty, third taking a -10 penalty, and fourth taking a -15 penalty. If you critically fail any of these checks, your turn ends before you can take any of the other actions you want to take.

Are their buildings below us? If so Id like to dropdown and knock over a bunch, getting debris on the hull. The belly land amonst the rubble. Then we shut everything down and play possum. With the hull covered in debris it should give us camoflauge.

A masterful Piloting or Stealth check could pull that off. However, failure could risk getting hit by debris that's too big or moving too fast that winds up damaging the hull instead.

I am going to take the GM's silence as acquiescence. This is taking way to long. These encounters might...might...work at live TT but here in PbP it is dragging out needlessly.

So the first sub issue is the threat rating thing. I have no idea where you are getting your numbers from. Are you pulling them out of the air? Just curious. I understand that to some people this might be helpful having everything quantified, but for me it is just frustrating because a) I don't know where it is coming from, b) it seemed to go up more than down, which I think is the reverse of what the players need to happen? If not then I am even more confused than I first thought.

Second sub issue is as I said above, I have run out of things to write. That is a lot on me cause I'm a shit writer, but it is also because encounter dragging out far too long.

Third sub issue is languages. I took some of those as a lark, I just figured it would be funny to have him wandering the halls of the ship mumbling to himself in a made up language from earth. Pig Latin would have had similar effect. With me being the only one that could communicate with the gremlin that was funny but only to me because no one else saw how I was purposely mistranslating it. Maybe get rid of the gobblygoop and just let us put the language we are using in front of what we write, like [West Terrain] "This encounter system is cocksuckery." That way everyone knows out of character when something is being monkeyed with and we can all laugh but IC we are dumbfounded because we got no idea what is being said.

Fourth sub issue is the nature of PbP. Nothing kills a game faster than lost momentum. Well that and my ADD acting up, like now, and I can't follow what is going on because there is too much going on. Again that is probably mostly my own issue. I will make another piloting roll and post the roll without extra commentary. I don't want to hold things up more. Please take this all as constructive criticism. I am trying to point out issues I see that are making this more difficult to stay with. I REALLY like this game, this character, and the others players here. Encounters that go one for months real time are just too much.

Yeah, that's the issue with PBP. I can only skip somebody so many times before I can't even consider them a player anymore and I don't want to keep skipping. I've tried to be patient because I don't want to just willy nilly kick anyone out, especially since we've already dropped 2 crewmembers.

That sounds like a good idea. Just put everything that's not in common with a language tag by it.

I'll post for a new crewmember to join after this encounter system. The system just uses a random die roll to determine a rising threat level. If the threat gets too high, a physical danger is imposed or resources are lost from the reward of the encounter. I essentially roll 1d20 per 2 players to determine a random rise in threat while you roll against a DC and every point you get above the DC is a reduction in threat level (every point below is an increase).

Andre, I'm going to have to skip you again. I know Gill isn't the only one getting impatient.

I had written and THOUGHT I posted some 3 times about attempting to fix a cube... I'm guessing they didn't post right. Though I did roll for them.

My stupid mobile I guess.

Also, I THINK Osram can also make his own cypher checks at advantage because I can put it in his hands when I am done and take it from him with my tier 2 quickdraw(every other turn) and still use it myself though realistically it would mean Andre wrote a correcting hunter program that still requires some input to account for variables... If GM is cool with that.

We'll see how a standard assist works for now.

When I asked initially I'd not accounted for the fact Andre was using Cypher for the roll, which Osram doesn't have.  Not sure if that puts one option or the other as the better pick (assisting vs independent action per Andre's suggestion above) given the wide range an unmodified D20 roll can give and the system penalizing degrees of failure the way it does.

That last roll you made in the diceroller says it was 2d20 straight instead of your normal 2d20+6 drop lowest.

I know you got a good roll but without the drop lowest it doesn't list which one is which. You might've gotten a 4 and a 20 but you also might've gotten two 12s. Gonna have to ask you to reroll that one. Or I'll reroll it for you if Gill responds before you update the reroll.

You should each have:
(5 + level) abilities (-1 per ability that is upgraded to tier 2)
HP max 15 + ((5+Con)*level)
FP max 15 + ((5+Wis)*level)  (-1 per ability you have that is a trait rather than a power)

Is the acid damaging the floor or are cargo bays coated with linings that expect hazardous spills?

If damage then, probably, an alert or alarm. Though it may take actual venting depending on how things are designed... and possibly more notes for Andre's Dreamship.

1d6 damage/round doesn't mean much to steel floors with 10+ hardness but to everything and everyone with <6 hardness and/or acid resistance, it's a problem. And it's a puddle to jump over or move around, not like the entire room is filling up with it.

Prolonged exposure to fumes would be a bigger concern but that's an issue for AFTER subduing an immediate threat.

Yep 10 + bonus. Most physical attacks are vs. Dex DC but if you do a combat maneuver it's vs. Str DC or Dex DC (whichever is better) and if you use poison its Dex or Con (whichever is better) and if you use mental attacks it's going to be Int, Wis, and/or Cha, whichever is most appropriate.

INT resists confusion
WIS resists illusions/deception
CHA resists enchantment/charm

Unavoidable effects deal 1/2 damage on a miss. "Unavoidable" is a +1 upgrade that can be applied to nearly any attack.

Armor Rating is damage reduction, so heavily armored characters often don't fear half damage since they soak most if not all of it.

There was a whole big announcement about quarantine procedures in that thread.

She took them into the airlock. Which Skip had to wait to open one side and then the door behind him was closed before you arrived.

The cargo hold has two airlocks that lead into the rest of the ship.

You all have short range comms you can use. You can repost since you deleted your previous one and retconned it.

Although trying to calm a creature while you're through a comm system when there's quite bit of distractions between you and it would be DISadvantage, not advantage. Skip made his own separate attempt and Ed wasn't declaring helping someone else.

If anything, it would've been better for you to assist him but oh well. He still did pretty good with a 19.

You mean figure out how to calm the creature? Empathy is a sensory ability, not a debuff or buff. It makes you aware to "loud" emotions even if you can't see a target and helps you see past deceptions when targets have strong emotions that run contrary to whatever ruse they're pulling.

Empathy itself doesn't allow you to manipulate the emotions of others though. That'd be Emotion Manipulation. There are several emotion powers you can take to recreate Emotion Manipulation but it depends what emotions you want to create.

No, tech is actually more primitive than you see in Star Wars and Star Trek. We just used pragmatic and ingenious ways of applying it that recreate our needs. Tech is more cyberpunk in space, less Star Wars/Star Trek.


Artificial Gravity (Artgrav): Most ships and space stations are cylindrical and use spin to provide artgrav. It's cheap and easy and for health reasons most living creatures need to spend more time with grav than without. It's turned off during docking and maintenance/repair procedures or when entering atmo. But it's not a magical or super advanced energy field. It's centrifugal force.

Blaster Weapons: Literally firing small bullets filled with plasma that explode on impact. Because the bullet is fragile and melts during this process, you effectively deal fire damage instead of piercing. But it's not true "blaster" or "phaser" tech from Star Wars or Star Trek. Laser weapons also exist but they're unreliable because the beams just catch things on fire like a flame thrower but don't pierce metal. They just superheat metal. Lasers are not exactly the most effective weapons except in certain circumstances.

Fuel: Ships have both battery cores and fuel supplies as having both is still more efficient (and safe) in long distances than relying on only one. EMPs are still dangerous if your ship cargo bay is open at the time you're hit. And EMPs can still take out your sensors even if you're closed up and your outer hull is protecting you. Recharging and refueling is still a thing. No warp core Star Trek forever batteries. We have NEAR forever batteries for small stuff, but ships require a lot of power. You also have to refill oxygen as there is no perfect oxygen cycling. It's VERY efficient but not perfect. You also still eat, sleep, and drink.

Holograms: Only slightly more advanced than holograms we have today. The special cameras and lenses detect the air contents and wind movements allowing it to display the hologram juuuuust right and provide the same quality of projection in mid air as you'd normally get with a back screen and fog. As long as nothing is meddling with the environment (violent movement, wind, people running through the hologram, the camera jostling or moving) holograms can fool the naked eye but not the nose or touch. But even a little mess up and anyone can tell. You can walk right through a hologram, and even grab the projector and block it's light displays.

Medicine: Cloning body parts is a new thing that's very expensive. Cybernetics are cheaper and some people prefer them. Diseases and poisons are still dangerous, so regular inoculations, check-ups, and anti-rad treatments are a thing for space travelers. They cannot bring people back from the dead unless you were frozen just right. And even then, there's a defrost process that has to be done very carefully or you're still dead. Cryosleep is very useful but still dangerous process that can kill you if done improperly. People who can afford it generally live 100 years but middle class people have about the same lifespans of today and poor people half that. More tech but also more dangers/scarcity.

Shields: Shields are just magnetic fields projected by array on the outside of your ship to deflect ferrous debris and thrusters to deflect slow debris. True shields that block anything (air, lasers, radiation, etc.) have not been invented yet so radiation outside is still a very real threat if your hull can't take it or if you need repairs in a dangerous area. Flying close to a star or even a planetoid without a designated/designed safe landing zone is still a big no no.

Honestly, if big scifi buffs took a look at Starslinger tech, they'd be like: Wow, your humans really are the hillbillies of the galaxy slapping that together and willingly blasting off into space like that.

Yes, there were 3 cubes but both kids were in the same cube, beasty was in another, and last one just popped open. More or less danger has passed. Now just RP stuff for a while:

The NPC in the room is paying attention. Her influence level went up +1 from it and you were added to her list of favorites from it because you did something she particularly approves of that she's never seen you do before.

BTW that's how you build influence with NPCs.

1 - do something heartfelt/amazing/dangerous that they've never seen you do before that they approve of
2 - do them a favor/bribe them

The NPCs influence level determines what they'll do for you. Essentially you can get them to do things for you as long as the request does not exceed the level of influence you have.

That's safe to assume Lilly is evasive answering those types of questions. She says she and the kids were captured, experimented on, and shoved into the cubes but no other real details.

She dodges questions about her past before being captured. She literally would not have answered with anything other than "just some small colony you never heard of".

You're right to be suspicious and its safe to assume she is withholding information. Skip and Ed are also onto something. Whoever they are, it's not as simple as she's claiming. As Andre pointed out: slaves are not cost effective with today's technology. So why would anyone do that to anyone else? And then why would a warship raze every ship to dust without warning?

Good questions to consider before you decide what to do next.

Been almost a week. Is it safe to say everyone's character has nothing more to say/ask?

None of you have confirmed what course of action you want to take next. Some of you proposed interviewing Lilly but nobody has set it in motion.

The discussion between the crew is there for you guys to both ICly and OOCly decide what your next course of action is. I can only build adventures based on where you go next, so you guys have to come to a consensus and decide.

If your character wants the group to do something, you can propose it and have everyone put it to a vote.

Gill, you're our most active player so you're officially the tiebreaker if not enough people respond within 2 days/person.

If you guys need help with clear choices, here's what I see so far:

1. Wait in deep space while supplies run low hopefully the warship forgets about you or thinks you're dead.
2. Search the asteroid for survivors (low probability there are any, but high probably of a lot of expensive space junk and possible enemy scouts)
3. Make your way back the way you came (high probably the warship is waiting or you)
4. Try to find another route back (pick any belter colony from the list or make one up from your backstory and I can integrate it into the narrative)
5. Battle strategy for taking on the warship (you're outgunned and outnumbered so you'd need to think/gain something to give you an edge to counterbalance that or its suicide)
6. Other?

The Lance and Val are young. They are good at what they do, but were brand new when you joined up with them. Literally everyone on the crew has more experience than them. The captain may be you boss on paper, but he's essentially a paper pusher and contacts guy. You guys ultimately call the shots and just agree on what you want. The only time he'll disagree is if its an obvious suicide mission or somehow screws him over. And Val is essentially just your crazy medic who believes in ghosts and witchcraft. And with the gremlin appearing, she seems less crazy and more..."that tinfoil conspiracy theorist actually turned out to be right about everything". LOL

Sorry guys, been busy with the eclipse today. Traffic is insane, everything is full, nobody can get an uber or lyft b/c they're all backed up. I heard they were charging $1500/week for rental vehicles. Leave it to a rare celestial event to get people acting out of sorts.

You guys come to a consensus on what you're going to do. I think we were waiting on Ed?

I believe we're waiting on Skip to choose between Ed, Gill, and Val as to who he wants to assist him in questioning Lilly.

The others will, by default, be on babysitting duty.

Andre is just waiting for feedback about whether or not we're going hunting for the cubes. He believes that there are other mystical magical supernatural creatures in these cubes and he believes that all of the people or things aboard the ship currently who have come out of the cubes fall into that category.

Gryf is the only one of those he's freely letting in and out of engineering. The kids just probably shouldn't be there and he has active distrust for Lilly.

Cap asked Andre to work on sensors and make sure ship is operating correctly. Nothing about going back. He even said "unless you have any better ideas" to everyone.

If you guys forget what was said, you can always scroll up and review the posts again when you're not sure.

100% up to you guys to decide. We're just waiting on whether you comply with the request or don't and suggest something else.

Ed, Gill, Skip, and Val need to split into two pairs as well and decide how to interview Lilly and the kids (together or separate and which pair is interviewing who).

FYI, NPCs may not always have the information or motives you're seeking. NPCs act within the parameters of their knowledge and personality. If you're looking for something that's not there, you're just going to go in circles. Just keep that in mind when you question and negotiate with them. If they absolutely refuse to give you what you want, but aren't hostile, there's often a good explanation you just haven't thought of. (part of solving a mystery)
