Okay, gentlemen, you're all three in.

Pick a portrait and we'll wait and see if we get any more participants...

I think I'll cap (if I even need to) at 8 (counting me, so 7 not counting me).

We now have 5 players, and me, for 6...

New folks (sorry if I was presumptuous earlier with "gentlemen"), pick a portrait.

Gonna wait just a little longer and see if I get 1 or 2 more or not...

That is indeed the hope.

I wish after we were done I could say "now let's make characters and run adventures in this new world!" but I just seriously don't have the time that would involve.

Balance:

I hope not more than a day or so per round, but who knows. It'll take as long as it takes I guess...

...Hm, you think I need a time limit? "Each round's submissions must be submitted in // voted for in X days or you get left out of submitting/voting for that round...?"

1. Okay so if we don't get any new people by the time I get up and start my day tomorrow (OR if we get exactly 2 new people), we'll start.

So you might all start thinking about what you wanna submit (via sending a private message to me) for Round One (see Rules thread).

2. I've decided that I'll hold off on setting any time limit on both/either submitting and voting. I'll do it if I ever need to... so please don't make me.

I... don't think so?

It's hard to say for sure without seeing an actual specific example.

But I'm glad you asked, because it makes it clear to me that I need to make a ruling:

ATTENTION: IF I DECIDE YOUR SUBMITTED CULTURE OR BEING IS TOO EVIL, I'LL TELL YOU SO AND YOU WILL HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO REVISE AND RE-SUBMIT.

As opposed to just losing your opportunity to submit it.

Okay, that's it, I'm officially starting.

Each of you PRIVATE MESSAGE me your ROUND ONE submission starting NOW.

Then I will anonymize them and put them all in a voting thread so you can each subsequently vote on them (by private messaging me your votes).

(I will select my vote for a candidate first, once all submissions are in.)

One more thing-- don't make anything for Round One that could count as a Powerful Being.

Okay, this is not going as efficiently as I'd hoped.

I am going to impose a time limit.

Anyone who hasn't submitted their idea for Round One by Thursday morning when I get up will get negative-1 point for that day, and another for each day after that they don't submit it.

1. A particularly good question. In this round, THREE submissions will become canon. So, I will be telling people to give 3 points to one entry, and then 2 to another, and then 1 to another (because if I don't tell people to give out multiple points, I'm afraid that there'll be a run-off, and I don't want that). So guess if we all gave 3 points to the same person's submission, then 15 points are possible this round (since one can't vote for oneself).

2. I think it would be hard for the ultimate winner of the game to BE the ultimate winner of the game and yet to also never have any of their submissions get enough votes to succeed in any rounds.

2 (continued) But if anyone has negative points at the end of a round... then they have negative points at the end of a round. When I tally up their points at the end, those will count against them, and lower their final score. Can a person still win if they have negative points at the end of a round? Sure... But it'd be that much harder-- especially if it keeps happening.

Looking forward to some interesting ideas. Thought that four submissions would be problematic, but forgot the GM will also submit. So five submissions? Might need more for subsequent rounds if voting is to matter unless we modify the number of accepted ideas...

I know this type of freeform world-building stuff doesn't get a lot of interest, but I find that confounding.

Also, yes, it has also been my observation that a large number of RP nerds are teachers of some stripe.

I mean I can't comment on how I find yours in particular interesting. Unless I went into detail on all, but even the most "boring" of them in my opinion holds a lot of possibilities. Since I can not confirm any entry is mine in particular I can't comment on them unless I did all of them. So yeah not going to happen until after the vote.

Round 1 is done. 3 concepts are now officially canon.

ROUND TWO:
1 or 2 places (1 or 2 per player).

--Each player will describe a place that exists in the fantasy world. It can be general (a continent, a desert, an ocean, a moon) or specific (a city, a village, a tower, a clearing in the woods). The place can be somehow magical, or not.
--DO NOT SUGGEST THINGS THAT ARE EXACTLY LIKE A PLACE THAT ALREADY EXISTS IN D&D/PATHFINDER/ANYWHERE ELSE.
--Each player may create one or two places. Two places will give you more chances to get votes.
--Top six recipients of votes will become officially canon as existing in the fantasy world.

(I guess we'll do the same as last time:

It would be a safe and guaranteed means of losing your right.

It takes time to write these, and It requires time some people might not have right away having them submit is a poor idea, having a safe deadline is going to be better for everyone.

Well, the rules state that the top 6 get in. I assume that means that each of our submissions is individual. I'm making mine linked, but that's a tactic. So, do we vote for the top 6 this time? Something like 3, 3, 2, 2, 1, 1 or 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1? Plus, having at least six sites would be nice. Also, is is possible, at any point, to stop and work on how this all combines into a cohesive whole?

I expected that 3, 2, and 1 would be sufficient.

(Thinks about the math of it)

I suppose you might have a point... It seems very unlikely to me, but what if, out of 10 submissions, only 5 got all the votes?

Perhaps we SHOULD each do 3, 3, 2, 2, 1, 1...?

I am open to other people's opinions about this... More opinions, anyone...?

I am working every single day aside from Monday which is when I intended to work a couple of hours on the project. To make it far better then my creature submission , hopefully, in quality.

The safe and guaranteed means of losing was more of a remark on how that wouldn't feasibly work in getting a quality submission out.
That was more a Mark of minor annoyance and saying if I submitted something immediately it wouldn't win because of a lack of time and the incredible likelihood it would be a quick and dirt submission.

Its also advisable to take your time on submissions as you might very well notice or think of something you might miss out later. And a higher quality submission will be more likely to win meaningless points.

I just dont want to send out crap again. Like my rush job of a creature.

Well, a discussion really. Just a chat OOC? I mean after this we'll have three unique creatures and six unique places, but how do they relate to one another? I am trying to integrate as I work, but it might be nice to stop and just discuss how we all see things fitting together at some convenient point.

For instance, the next round of voting is for the order we want "powerful being" and "cultures" to go in. We could all just chat about it during that voting process. Or we can discuss each round as we plan and write the next round.

Just tossing out ideas.

As for time to create, I expect that 3-4 days is plenty. Isn't that what we had this time? Fri-Mon? I mean, I do most my thinking while puttering about cleaning. That's what I did today, cleaned the house and thought about locations as I did. Then I just typed up my ideas. The typing process went fast. I did a couple read throughs to double check then submitted. But I was spring-boarding off the creature ideas a lot in mine.

Mm. Once we have the places in canon, I can see a little work being done in that respect. I'll worry about it then.

Hmm. I'm not surprised that there are two deserts, but I'm a tiny bit surprised that they're so similar.

Well, if they both get in canon, I'll let the two creators of them decide if there are TWO deserts, or if they should just be combined...

Here's what ended up in the top 4 spots:

The Sandstone Desert
The Amerylith Coast
The Village of Nature's Chessboard

3-way tie, with each getting 8 points... which is fine.

Endless Mines came in fourth, with 7 points... which is Fine.

But there's a three-way tie for those that had 6 points, and one of them is mine.

I was not involved in any sort of tie in Round One, so/and the issue of tie-breaking didn't need to come up.

The rules say:

quote:
IN THE EVENT OF A TIE, the GM will break the tie UNLESS the tie involves himself, in which case what the hell, there'll be a tie, and the tied players will be said to have both achieved victory. This is also true of the final score

So I dunno, I want to tread carefully here.

The way the rules as already written say this gets resolved = what th' hell, we have 7 Places, fine, whatever.

HOWEVER. As I previously stated,

The Amerylith Coast, The Cursed Island, and The Ring of Light all seem to me like they could be folded into one another conceptually (very easily). (If you don't see how that's possible, let me know and I'll explain.) The Amerylith Coast is already in the top three, and The Cursed Island and The Ring of Light are involved in the tie for 6 points.

SO.

1. I want to make sure no one revolts at letting all three of the places involved in the 6-point-tie in just because one of them is one of mine.

2. If the answer to #1 is "nah it's cool," then discussion needs to happen between the creators of The Amerylith Coast, The Cursed Island, and The Ring of Light now about how cool they are or aren't with the idea of concept combination (NONE of those are mine). (Since I don't want a run-off, I think it's okay for you to reveal your identities as the creators of those Places now).

2a. If all three of those are combined, though, we'll have FIVE Places. Should we, IF that happens, allow in the Place that got 5 points...? Discuss, please. (We're not voting, just discussing.)

1-2c. I just don't want a run-off, is one of the things I'm saying.

(3. Note: I do NOT want to start discussing "let's talk about where the places are in relation to each other on a conceptual map" yet. I already have certain ideas about that... BUT let's get all of the above straightened out first.)

It occurs to me that an alternative way for me to settle the 3-way tie for the 6 points is for me to just throw one of them out. But I wouldn't choose to throw MINE out, so that seems... problematic as a solution. Unless the creators say "hey no, GM, it's your contest, it's up to you." But still.

That's got my vote.

Combining those three could work in a number of ways. I mean, the Cursed Island and Ring of Light work together in a limited sense, except one has been colonized on record and the other's a mystery. Those two could also easily be locations within or along the Coast.

But that's all second to the idea of just taking the seven and then sorting out stuff.

Well, for example:

The Amerylith Coast, the Ring of Light, and the Accursed Island

--Amerylith Beach is located along the eastern coastline of the eastern continent. It is notable for its length and the vast coral reef that extends along its length. In truth, the beach is a amalgam of various beaches broken up by cliffs, mangrove swamps, and other features. Still, it is considered as one place in minds: The Amerylith Coast.

--The coast teems with various forms of life native to the planet in both the water and along the various coastal features. This has attracted settlements, but these are sparse and distant from one another. The coastline is quite sparsely populated despite its bounty because a great deal of its native fauna is extremely dangerous, due to the leyline that runs along the coast between the beaches and the reef. One of the most potent on the planet, the Amerylith Leyline thrums with magical energies. Many of the local flora and fauna have developed synergies with and have latent magical abilities. And at the base of this ecosystem are the vast clouds of Archanaea that float along the leyline itself. It is also no surprise that there are several locations along the coast where smokeweed thrives. This does attract the occasional trader and spurs local communities to harvesting and cultivating the plant.

--Then, running east and west, is the Equatorial Leyline. Where it meets with the Amerylith Leyline lies a great congregation of Archanaea in a ring-like shape. The Archanaea consumes the massive permeating energy. However, few lights last for long inside the circle. Many myths abound about the islands that legends say lie within the ring, for few ever survive entering the ring for any time. Those that do tend to go missing for many months before reappearing with no memory of ever entering it.

--No Predators eat the Archanaea here, and they only flash those few boats that seek to enter near the waters.

--The Greatest myth or tale is of a island, which the Archanaea ward travelers away from, a cursed land that held great magic, at one point, long since forgotten.

--Some say that the island sank--reasons for the island sinking are myriad-- a wrathful god, hubris of the mortals that worked upon it, and so many more— none with any proof of the matter.

--Others say that the island sinks and rises occasionally for unknown and mysterious reasons.

--But then, some believe the island still rests on the surface, just hidden from the world, with only those wishing to leave ever returning, forgetting what happened on the island.

--This large island is seen as quite dangerous a place. In history, many countries, from many alignments, have established colonies on it, but none lasted.

--Mysterious creatures have wiped out any colony in less than a decade, though those sent to explore it have rarely encountered those mysterious creatures that have wiped one colony after another, and when an occasional colony has been attempted, either earthquakes, heavy storms or even wildfires have also destroyed them.

--Nonetheless, its fertile lands, mineral richness and strange plants and species (some with magical powers) seem to make sure more will always be ready to try (and fail)…

Well to simplify:

--There's the long coast, which also has a beach running down it on a reef. The coast in question is on a magical leyline.

--There's also a magical leyline that goes around the equator.

--Where those two lines meet is a ring of magic krill (plankton, if you don't know that word. Make a Spongebob joke and I will yell at you).

--Inside that very wide ring is a magical accursed island that's very mysterious.

So... like that.

I... don't really know what that means.

BUT THE VIBE I'M GETTING IS that we should let all of the 6-pointers in, especially since we can basically combine concepts somewhat. So:

The Sandstone Desert: 8
The Amerylith Coast: 8
The Village of Nature's Chessboard: 8
Endless Mines: 7
The Cursed Island: 6
Pendrell: 6 points
The Ring of Light: 6

So, I'm about to let these all into canon, as discussed above. Anyone wanna stop me?

IF not, then I'll move onto the next step, which will be discussing where everything is in relationship to one another. BUT BEFORE WE DO THAT, i want to be sure that there's no objections.

So let's have at least two people give me either an objection, or a "no objections, GM."

Then (and only then) I'll start talking about what's next.

OKAY SO. Now we know what places are in canon.

Here's what I think:
--We've already got a long eastern coast. Magical ley line runs up and down it.

--We've got an equatorial ley line, with a ring of magic krill where the two lines meet.

--We've got a big swamp. I imagine it being at the south end of the long coast. Therefore, I think the ring of light is down south of there.

--We've got a mysterious dangerous magical island somewhere in the ring (probably at its center).

--We've got a big desert. I suggest it be on the western half of the continent...

--We've got a village where there's smokeweed... Might I suggest it's north of the swamp?

--Underneath a lot of this, we have some accursed mines.

So... Is there more to say about this? Or some reason something has to be moved, conceptually?

Oh, I take the anthropoligist POV. People first then gods. People invent gods. That's what I'd like, gods like the ones in Americna Gods if anyone saw that show or read the books. Gods born from mortal needs rather than gods creating the mortals.

So, my vote, people then gods.

As to arranging the stuff, that works. The big crazy caves feels a bit underdarky. Also reminds me of the subterannean world in the Percy Jackson novels.

So, desert in the west? Why move the desert rather than put the swamp and field in the west? Part of the description of the desert was that it made getting to the coast difficult. Not hard to access the coast if the two most likely to be populated areas are right next to it. As for the arrangement of the watery stuff, sounds fine to me.

That leaves us with a single large continent and some islands? How close is the continent to the equator? By its description, it feels close. Coral reefs, swamps, mangroves, etc. Sounds Florida-esque. It even has its own bermuda triangle!

Most is on a very small scale here, I think. And The Lost Pendrell Swamp would be a hard push for that since the Chessboard location is also included and they farm Smnokeweed on a alarge scale there.

But again, the settlements here seem small so far. Pendrell might have been bigger when it was at its height, but it isn't anymore, is it?

I disagree and agree. I by no means see the chessboard as the most major settlement. On the other hand, I also agree that the swamp very well might not be the main place people go to harvest smokeweed.

A little late to the party, as it seems already decided, but, without entering in real world religious views of anyone, in a fantasy world it's likely to be the other way.

Nonetheless, be it Gods creating peoples from their power, or people creating Gods fro mtheir beliefs, they are likely for one to be a "réflex" of the other, and so the result not changing too much.

So, I abstain, being good with both possibilities.

I'd also like to suggest the following:

--The western edge of the swamp isn't going to end and then 10 FEET LATER THE DESERT STARTS. I just don't believe it. So it seems to me that there's got to be something between them... I suggest broad sweeping plains (that drain into the swamp). Or... or do you prefer mountains? Mountains surrounded by plains? --The swamp also doesn't have to be the only thing on the western half of the continent. I can see woods or whatever there. For that matter, if the continent's big enough, it'll get cold as one goes north...

I did wonder about the colonization.

My suggestion:

--Legends say there are a number of mysterious magical islands in the Ring of Light area.

--ONE of them is actually on the OUTSIDE of the Ring of Light, about 10 miles to the west. It's the one that keeps trying to get colonized (which always fails sooner or later).

--The legends say that the islands INSIDE the Ring of Light are even richer in resources and natural treasures than the one to the west of the Ring, so cultures want to get their hands on those even more...

How's that...?

ROUND THREE: CULTURES is up.

To help avoid the need for a runoff, give 3 points to two entries, and then 2 to two others, and then 1 to two others. (Like last time, it may not succeed in avoiding a tie, but at least it seems fair.)

PM me your votes.

Do NOT vote for your own submission at all.

Hey both My selections won.

Alright so, Chessboard stuff has now become a major facet of the world. Though I do like the Swamp locales.

I'm glad the Half-Orcs won, since some life in the Mines were appropriate.

And I dont mind If Hapits ride the Lizards it sounds appropriate, racing is something fun after all.

Hmm, I'm just happy that some of my stuff got added in, but not just one, two of them. Nice! Also, thanks, the Half-orcs where my idea.

Anyways, I was thinking on the lines that the Cage-folk's ancestors shunned the laws of their former province cause their outlaws and made a new one. They also provide safety to those caste that leave the Monarchy, since they too oppose the Monarchy's regime. They also have an open economical warfare to anyone with a Smokeweed business. All smokeweeds belong to the Cage, no one else.

Interesting. Seems the west is the more densely populated, specifically the swamp.

Might be easier to know about relationships with the chessboard once we know more about it.

EDIT: were you going to copy/paste the descriptions again?

It should be noted that Hapid is noted to having cities. While say the Frog monarchy only has one. This does mean that densely populated may just mean more of different folk then just more folk period.

Same with the Cage-Folk, and the Uglolla aren't building major cities anytime soon.

Three cultures in one smallish area versus one culture spread out over a vast area. The Sandstone desert was noted as being quite large.

I am not assuming the swamp is that big really. Could be.

Meh, still, interesting mishmash.

I'm going to be honest I didn't realize it was density, not totality even though I said density. It is very likely habits are spread out over a vast area while it is likely the swamp is more densely populated.

Re: OOC Thread

Okay SO:

--Hapids now ride Giant Blue lizards around the desert. When one gets too sleepy, it just crawls off to a cave and starts sleeping again (usually after it's delivered one to a safe-enough location). One can wake them up with the right floral scents, but it's diminishing returns (with the same lizard).

--Frogs sometimes escape their monarchy and emigrate to the Chessboard Village? Whereas the Cagers came from the Chessboard Village long ago and have bad memories of it? Right?

--PLUS the Cagers have economic/cultural hostility toward anyone else who cultivates smokeweed? Right?

--I am, in fact, visualizing the swamp is large... probably not as large as the desert, but large.

--Having said that, I think Xadir is right-- there could be just as many Hapid as there are Cagers or Frogs-- more, even-- just spread out more widely, too.

--(Daryus: At first I didn't know what you meant, but yeah, I see, you mean in the Canon thread. Yeah, I'll clean that up and put the official descriptions once we're done discussing Round Three.)

So... anything else we need to discuss regarding Round Three? Like, any of the above...?

If so, it would be more logical for the Frogs taht flee the Morchy to run for the Cage ,as this smke would, as per its definition, avoid the Law Mages of the Monarchy to go for them, as it i nterferes with their magic (when not outright poisenous to them)...

I agree with the thoughts presented.

I believe it is possible for this to cause Strain and even Wars between the Two, with this being the case, it is possible that while they are the major refugee hub, that some may feel it unwise to side with their enemy and seek more peaceful lands elsewhere like the Chessboard Village.

Re: OOC Thread

So... we got ex-villagers living in a former prison. Now, that prison was noted as having  been built before whatever cursed made the swamp. OR had the swamp always existed? Doesn't seem that way in the description. So Cagers have been around a while? The Cage is covered in smoke? Smokeweed doesn't make smoke, does it? Only when it is smoked, yeah?

Interesting Q for Cagers - Dislike others who cultivate Smokeweed is what causes the stress between the chessboard and them? Or is it also possible that the chessboard is an area that belonged to the former kingdom existent before the swamp, now independent, that still views the cagers as little more than criminals or bandits?

Then the Frogs. Who dislike everyone or everyone dislikes them. Same difference really. Refugee frogs flee to the cage seems right. If the cage has been there for generations taking in refugees, there's probably a notably large proportion of frogs. A secondary community of the creatures, right? Other than frogs, you say its a mix of races. But over time, that would be hard to maintain. Also, other than frogs and humans and Hapids, what races are there. More on half-orcs later...

Still, frogs and cagers make a nice balance of order and chaos.

And down south the Uglolla are minding their own business. I suspect that means the Uglolla have access to a south-western coast area? Mangroves and such?

Also minding their own business when not getting chased by sharks are the Waveriders. They do cultivate their own smokeweed, but there are far enough away from the Cagers that I doubt it's a problem.

Now to half-orcs. What's an orc? Since this game seems premised in avoiding standard D&D tropes, what's an orc that we have half-orcs? My suggestion, orc is less a race and more a class. Working class, low-brow types. Just spitballing trying to understand. Not even touching the background of where they came from, that can just be some type of creation myth they have.

Hapids just be chillin in the desert lookin like cats and rabbits. Find myself wondering how sexuality works in that context. But that's pretty idle.

Right.

Perhaps they're burning it (a lot) as a part of religious or other societal rites/services/rituals?

Wait, where'd you get that idea? I see nothing about the Frogs not liking others. In fact, they freely let newcomers emigrate to their kingdom as long as the new people join the caste system...

I don't think you can have a class without a society to be in... Which doesn't invalidate what you're saying, but it makes it harder.

I picture ORC (in this context) as being like "7-to-7.5-foot-tall people with green skin and noticeable tusks coming up from the lower jaw, physically strong and tough" and half-orcs averaging 6.5 feet tall with smaller tusks and slightly less strong and tough than orcs.

No one has mentioned orcs being a thing unto themselves, though... maybe they merged into humanity in the form of hybrid kids? Or maybe something else happened to them? (Or maybe they just have some villages along the eastern coast that aren't complex enough to have a very complicated culture?) Maybe we'll hear about some of these things in Round Four or later...?

Re: OOC Thread

With the change of prisoners being ex-villagers, I'm going to say that the prisoners have long since died out, but the town is still fully functional when it was founded by the Cagers (who were just the run of the mill bandits and exiles of Chessboard), even though some of it is still submerged with swamp water. On the question of this whole smokes appearing round the Cage, I was thinking it was some sort of environmental affect due to constant usage of Smokeweed, it's made a good barrier for any folks of Law though, but theirs also some barriers for Chaos (in order to sell all kinds of Smokeweed of course). But most of the populace are either neutral and maybe some just adapt to form an immunity to it.

Their are varying tales (at least to what I thought of) to the origins of their conflict with Chessboard. One said that the leader of the Cagers was original person that harvested Smokeweed of the Chessboard folk (who were mostly pilgrims in the run from persecution at the time), but was  ousted out of the village due to greed. Either that or the Cagers (at the time it was just some bandits and a few exiled pilgrims) believe they were the first people to have cultivated Smokeweed as the Cage had an abundance of it hidden in the darkest areas of the town. Either way, Cagers will not relent on their claims that Smokeweed belong to them, and will not bow down to the laws of the past.

Also, I mostly painted the orcs as a blank and hope someone else can make it work. For all I know, instead of them being pigs, they could have bat or hippo features. Guess that needs some explanation, whoops.

Well y'all can keep discussing round three in this thread, but for now...

ROUND FOUR:
1 or 2 powerful beings (1 or 2 per player).

--Each player will describe one or two very powerful being/s that exist/s in the fantasy world. Each powerful being can be a deity, or something that does not count as a deity (like just the sort of thing that could be a warlock's patron, say). Ask yourself: "Could this powerful being I have in mind could maybe win in some sort of contest against a lesser deity?" If the answer is "yes," then you're probably on the right track.
--NO DEVILS NOR DEMONS. In fact, no powerful being is allowed to be eeeeeevilllll at all. Selfish, maybe! Mischievous, maybe! Destructive, maybe! Scary, maybe! BUT NOT eeeeeevilllll.
--NO LOVECRAFT.
--DO NOT SUGGEST THINGS THAT ARE EXACTLY LIKE A POWERFUL BEING THAT ALREADY EXISTS IN D&D/PATHFINDER/ANYWHERE ELSE.
--Each player may create one or two powerful beings. Two powerful beings will give you more chances to get votes.
--Top six recipients of votes will become officially canon as existing in the fantasy world.

These are intended to be individuals.

However, if you wanted to make-- JUST FOR EXAMPLE-- a deity of Light or Protection (or both), I'd let you toss in them also having angels/archangels too if you wanted.

(EDIT: Also: I don't THINK traditional St. George would be powerful enough to count for Round 4? I could see ramping up his power and importance to the point where he could, though...)

No need for tie-breaking this time. The top 6 slots all got 6 or more points. The 7th-and-lower slots all got 5 or lower: a clear and inarguable division.

Noric 8
The Man 8
Ossiga, the Ghost Queen 7
Bor’Ma 6
The Grand Lizard 6
That-Which-Thrashes-in-the-Deep 6

These, then, will be in canon.

Any need for discussion of the results of Round Four before we move on to Round Five? I see no need for discussion, as such, but I'm not going to presume that there's no need for discussion just because I'm not immediately seeing such a need...

Each magic thing can be small and common (Potion of Lucky Birdwatching), or something unique and powerful (Giantbane, a sword that makes you totally immune to heat and fire that also instantly slays all Fire Giants it cuts), or in-between. --DO NOT SUGGEST THINGS THAT ARE EXACTLY LIKE A MAGICAL THING THAT ALREADY EXISTS IN D&D/PATHFINDER/ANYWHERE ELSE.

BUT I WILL ALSO SAY TWO MORE THINGS:

It may occur to some people to make items with a mind/will of their own... a book, a magic sword, who knows what.

Extra Rule One: if it/they has/have a mind/will of its/their own, it/they absolutely cannot be as powerful as the stuff submitted for Round Four.

Extra Rule Two: like Round Four, powerful or not, if it/they has/have a mind/will of its/their own, it/they cannot be eeeeeeeeviiilllll.

Can I just point out the Advisors stone could very well just be A Trait stone with The First King's memory inside it?

We can actually incorporate it into the Trait Stone example...

Edit: Sorry the Advisor's memory inside it. Ah well someone already responded.

Honestly, I agree.

As for orcs, yeah. I still don't know what killed off all the orcs (if anything-- if they didn't just intermarry with humans until all we had were half-orcs), but half-orcs are big tough humans who swim very well. And being able to hold one's breath for much longer than a normal human is always handy in subterranean mine tunnels when you can never be sure when you might run into a pocket of bad air...

I will say:

1. Just do your best.

2. It seems to me that one sure way would be to tie the new class to the canon world somehow//as much as possible.

3. Look, as my examples tried to suggest: if it's some kind of thief, knight, mage, cleric, whatever-- some resonance with a fantasy class someone's already thought of is surely going to be almost impossible. Just don't make it exactly like something found somewhere else. Do your best to put some sort of unique spin on it.

ROUND SIX: CLASSES is up.

To help avoid the need for tiebreaking, give 3 points to one entry, and then 2 to another, and then 1 to another. (It may not succeed in avoiding a tie, but at least it seems fair.)

PM me your votes.

Yes there was, Hapids we're established to be gladiators. I suspect they built off that.

Annnnyway...

Final results are in for the CLASSES round:

Spirit Shaman: 9
Stormriders: 8
Hapid Gladiator: 6

Interesting results... a mage/cleric class (or is it a cleric/mage class? Probably), a ranger/druid class, and a fighter/magey/roguey class. Or so it seems to me.

Welp, do we need to discuss anything before I officially declare that we're moving on to the final round...?

Just picking nits, but if Hapids are the only culture that seems to use gladiators... wouldn't that make the hapid gladiator the standard rather than an outlier? Also, based on the description, are hapid gladiators all men? Since only the males are rabbits and it mentions high jumps as part of the style. Or would there be divergent styles for males and females and even a neutral style?

Fine with the other two. Stormriders read as wizard/cleric combo, yeah. Divination focus? Somewhat shamanistic.

It's telling how much we all think in D&D classes.

Other than that, fine to move on.

Yeah that class was my design.

So I'll answer the questions.

Cats are better jumpers then Rabbits in the real world and I don't see why either Sex would be prevented to use high jumps of the gladiator style itself. I honestly did think of making the Gladiator style more specific but that's more so I could imagine so many class variants it wasn't even funny.

Gladiators are a class in other Games, hence why I named them Hapid gladiators. While they might be the common Gladiator in this World, I wanted a distinction to be made.

On one hand, I like the idea of divergent styles.

On the other hand, who says cats can't jump? Have you ever seen a cat jump? They're better at jumping than I am, I tell you what.

Each faction should have something that makes them a bit unique.

--DO NOT SUGGEST THINGS THAT ARE EXACTLY LIKE A FACTION THAT ALREADY EXISTS IN D&D/PATHFINDER/ANYWHERE ELSE.

I'm sorry for confusing you. The No Additional 0's does two things that feel nicer one it's a straight ranking list, thus emotions are easier to judge the overall pieces.

While the other aspect is I only feel responsible for one thing if it fails to go through. I feel more content in my even mild support, and am relieved when the 0 comes through anyway, even if it wasn't what I'd prefer of the bunch.

Both Went the Exact Same.

Daryus, and The Gm had 67
I had 60
Balance had 54
World had 51.

I might be wrong, but I think I have done enough verification, and made it fairly easy for anyone to double check my results, by grouping all entries together, and allowing them to see the math equation. Heck, I triple Checked both of the Ways I did the Math.

So, The Gm did catch up to Daryus, he didn't surpass however. As Both Daryus, and The Gm Won. And as I had long since Suspected I got third.

Re: OOC Thread

Also I do believe something Else is amiss.

I believe there is one point unaccounted for.

For every contest 30 points total was awarded, for all double contests you can treat them as two separate contests, for a total of 10.

Each person gave out 6 points during each contest, and 5 people played.

Now, no matter which reading you go, even if I'm wrong on the totals at the End, an interesting point arises, both mine and the Gm's were off by 1, 1 point is unaccounted for, and very well might be what solves the Tie.

For math purposes.

Gm's Results
300-68-65-63-59-44=1 you can just look at the 3 odds, to see it doesn't equal an even.

Daryus 68
Me 65
Xadir 63
Balance 59
WO 44

My Results

300-67-67-60-54-51=1 Same parity issue, easily identifiable even without going through the math.

Daryus 67
The Gm had 67
I had 60
Balance had 54
World had 51.

Edit: Heck, I can even prove which round the issue propped out on.

(Xadir) Trait Stones: 10
(Balance) Star Steel: 6
(Me) Belt and Scabbard of Thunderbolt: 5
(Daryus) The Shell of Orkan-Mahru: 4
(World's) Advisor's Stone: 4

It was this one Contest, where a parity issue Arised.

Note it should be impossible for only one vote to have an odd number.

Possibly a result of just missing a vote? Guess it might matter. I was partaking more to build a world.

However, if that missing point is nagging at you, gotta recount that round. Not sure how organized everyone else was with voting, but all my votes were cast using a single PM thread, so mine should be easy to track.

Gotta admit, there were more than one round where I didn't want to vote for third place at all.

Smokeweed was neat. Moderately original, gave the world a unique commodity, and started to add definition to the magic system with the order/chaos stuff. That's why I tried to incorporate it. I tried incorporating as much of what was canon as I could as I submitted each round.

I tried not to make any assumptions about what was in the world other than what we had created and discussed.

I should think that a basic understanding of what does or does not exist at first would be a good discussion to have should this process ever be done again.

We did manage to spin "orcs" into something neat though!

Balance votes:
3 points for the trait stones
2 points for the belt and Scabbard of Thunderbolt
1 point for the Advisor stone

(Xadir) Trait Stones: 3
(Balance) Star Steel:
(Me) Belt and Scabbard of Thunderbolt: 2
(Daryus) The Shell of Orkan-Mahru:
(World's) Advisor's Stone:  1

World's:

Trait Stones: 3 Points
Belt and Scabbard of Thunderbolt: 2 Points
Star Steel: 1 Point

(Xadir) Trait Stones: 3 and 3 is 6
(Balance) Star Steel: 1
(Me) Belt and Scabbard of Thunderbolt: 2 and 2 is 4
(Daryus) The Shell of Orkan-Mahru:
(World's) Advisor's Stone:  1

Daryus:

3 - Star Steel
2 - Trait Stones
1 - Belt and Scabard

(Xadir) Trait Stones: 6 and 2 is 8
(Balance) Star Steel: 1 and 3 is 4
(Me) Belt and Scabbard of Thunderbolt: 4 and 1 is 5
(Daryus) The Shell of Orkan-Mahru:

Xadir:

3: Advisor's Stone

(Xadir) Trait Stones: 8
(Balance) Star Steel: 4 and 2 is 6
(Me) Belt and Scabbard of Thunderbolt: 5
(Daryus) The Shell of Orkan-Mahru: 1
(World's) Advisor's Stone:  1 and 3 is 4

Me:

I always voted first, because I would see all the votes, and voting first would mean I couldn't manipulate things-- just like everyone else, I wouldn't know how everyone else's votes were going.

(Xadir) Trait Stones: 8
(Balance) Star Steel: 6
(Me) Belt and Scabbard of Thunderbolt: 5
(Daryus) The Shell of Orkan-Mahru: 1
(World's) Advisor's Stone:  4

So if we compare these to my final results:

(Xadir) Trait Stones: 10
(Balance) Star Steel: 6
(Me) Belt and Scabbard of Thunderbolt: 5
(Daryus) The Shell of Orkan-Mahru: 4
(World's) Advisor's Stone: 4

It looks like I must have given 3 to the Shell, 2 to Trait stones...

(Blinks)

Huh. Yeah, one point missing.

...I would have THOUGHT that I would have given 3 to the Trait Stones, 2 to the Shell, and 1 to Star Steel...

Huh.

Anyone better at math than me got any further observations about this?

Other than: I think this proves that if there are any further repetitions of this, that each voting round might need to be tabulated in public after each round? Maybe with aliases for the voters to avoid later retaliation?

I don't have time to GM, but if one of you were to GM, I might play, depending on the type of system...

Tell you what, if one of you would even CO-GM, I might be willing to set things up for a game...

As for starting over, I'd be good with that too...

Alas, for me, GURPS was ruined by a toxic player and a bad campaign my first time with it. I've never felt a desire to give it a second chance.

But in a similar vein, Chaosium's BRPS could also work here as it does not use classes. You could easily use some of its mechanics to represent following certain paths though.

Otherwise, FATE might be interesting though I am somewhat new to that system.

Ahhh. Well just ask me questions, and I'll answer.

1. Basically when it feels like there's nothing left that's interesting to do in a scene, it's time to move to another. You can ask the players, "Is there anything further you want to do here?"

2. The second part is somewhat up to the players... see how long they want to play things out.

You'll pick it up. Being a GM is the only solution I've found to the RPol problem of GMs who just disappear due to RL problems...

Okay so the next thing to decide is system. I've shown examples of Fate and Caltropcore (although if one has had no exposure to FATE I'd understand if one might need slightly more explanation)... I could also show how an PBTA (like Dungeon World) character might look...

What do you think, Xadir?

Well, MORE stats, perhaps?

Forceful
Agile
Insightful
Charming

?

Or, let's see...

Forceful (STR and CON)
Agile
Intelligence
Wisdom
Charisma

?

Or the good ol' STR/DEX/CON/INT/WIS/CHR?

I like Forceful/Agile/Insightful/Charming myself, but I can flexible about this...

Does it make sense to have chaos and law magic being stats with them being selectively available based on class?

Hapid Gladiators use mild uses of chaos magic, while say Frogs are more prone to law magic. Allowing different sources of power, some might not be able to use it at all, others in mild ways a 1, others are decent or advanced practitioners a 2, or a 3?

I might just be a fool, and missing the point though.

Forceful/Agile/Insightful/Charming

I can try to work with this. Though need to verify.

Forceful would be kicking down the door and taking names
Agile, would be sneaking through the Window, and overhearing their conversations to take those names.
Insightful would be not going there in the first place, bribing the Servants to give me those guys' names.
Charming would be convincing you are on the guest list even though you aren't and having them introduce themselves to you, to learn their names.

Agile is sneaking, stealth, ranged combat, yeah.

UH, I think that would be Charming, because it'd be convincing the servants to help you out and tell no one they told you.

Insightful would be spotting important details, keeping watch, finding hidden stuff, figuring things out, remembering stuff ("Wait, I heard an old legend about this once... I think their necks are the least-armored part of them...")

Re: OOC Thread

Okay folks, I have hidden all the old stuff and replaced the old rules with a new sci-fi set of rules.

This time, I felt for a sci-fi world, Places should come before Creatures/Plants.

So... any comments before I officially open voting?

So, me and 3 other players (unless someone else drops out).

Is this a problem, or do I need to advertise for more players again?

I'm leaning toward not a big problem?? Am I wrong?

4 ought to be fine. More would be fine as well.

As to my suggestion above, is there anything we want to say has been established?

Are we building one world? A solar system? What races are already existant? What level of sci-fi are we at? What style?

I really want to avoid making too many unfounded assumptions in creating the world. Are we going to set a hard limit that only what we have established or made canon exists?

1. Okay so should I consider placing an ad or not?

2. Yes, good questions.

--You are not limited to a solar system. I think we should limit ourselves to less than 1/4th of a galaxy, but I'm not limiting to one world or one solar system.

--No sentient species already exist, but like last time, if you say "such-and-such culture exists" and you don't specify species, they'll be human (as happened last time with the Uglolla and the Waveriders).

3. I'm not ordaining style. I'm fine with a mix of styles. Cute Ewoks on one planet, Xenomorphs on another, pulp heroes with jetpacks and ray guns on another. Except not like that, because Ewoks and Xenomorphs have already been invented elsewhere.

4. Level of Sci-Fi, hmm. I'm going to say:

--Interstellar travel is not uncommon. (Whether it's REALLY common or just not uncommon, whether it's fast or slow or in-between, whether some cultures are way better at it than others and horde those secrets, or everyone's equally good at it, is yet to be determined.)

--Robots exist. Whether they're smart enough to count as people is up to you.

--Computers exist. Whether they're smart enough to be sentient AIs is up to you.

--Genetic engineering exists, and it's better than we can do today. Whether it's "super-amazing" or just "impressive" is up to you.

--Force fields exist. Whether they are common or super-expensive to run for even five minutes is up to you.

--Artificial gravity is capable of being generated. Whether that's common or super-costly is up to you.

--Super-medical-science exists. Whether it's common or something that only millionaires can afford is up to you.

What other questions need to be answered?

Think it's enough that I explain in the updated ad itself? Or should I make a whole new darn game and move us 4 over to it?

Well it's Friday, and we're starting, so:

ROUND ONE:
1 or 2 places (1 or 2 per player).
--Each player will describe a place that exists in the sci-fi world. It can be general (a continent, a desert, an ocean, a moon, a planet) or specific (a city, an outpost, a building, a colony ship).
--DO NOT SUGGEST THINGS THAT ARE EXACTLY LIKE A PLACE THAT ALREADY EXISTS ANYWHERE ELSE.
--Each player may create one or two places. Two places will give you more chances to get votes.
--Top six recipients of votes will become officially canon as existing in the sci-fi world.

Re: OOC Thread

Okay so here we go, all results in.

SO. Last time we did this, in the fantasy genre, we learned that maybe my math skills are not the best. So, I promised that we'd need to go for maximum transparency this time. So:

Colony Ship Longo Drum (spaceship):
Harvest (planet):
Hong Kong Station (space station/republic):
The Insular Nebula (nebula):
Lilith (planet):
Mahalzhan System (solar system):
Mersta (space station/power plant):
S.S. Belong (spaceship):

My votes:

Colony Ship Longo Drum (spaceship): 3
Harvest (planet):
Hong Kong Station (space station/republic): 1
The Insular Nebula (nebula): 1
Lilith (planet): 3
Mahalzhan System (solar system): 2
Mersta (space station/power plant):
S.S. Belong (spaceship): 2

Pavel's votes:

Insular Nebula   1
SS Belong        1
Lilith           2
Mahalzan System  2
Harvest          3
Mersta           3

New results:

(Pavel) Colony Ship Longo Drum (spaceship): 3
(GM) Harvest (planet): 3
(Pavel) Hong Kong Station (space station/republic): 1
(Daryus) The Insular Nebula (nebula): 2
(World's) Lilith (planet): 5
(Daryus) Mahalzhan System (solar system): 4
(GM) Mersta (space station/power plant): 3
(World's) S.S. Belong (spaceship): 3

(It was at this point I thought to put whose creations were whose)

Daryus' votes:

3 - S.S. Belong
3 - Longo Drum
2 - Harvest
2 - Mersta
1 - Hong Kong Station
1 - Lilith

(Pavel) Colony Ship Longo Drum (spaceship): 6
(GM) Harvest (planet): 5
(Pavel) Hong Kong Station (space station/republic): 2
(Daryus) The Insular Nebula (nebula): 2
(World's) Lilith (planet): 6
(Daryus) Mahalzhan System (solar system): 4
(GM) Mersta (space station/power plant): 5
(World's) S.S. Belong (spaceship): 6

World's votes:

Harvest (planet): 3 Points
The Insular Nebula (nebula): 3 Points
Colony Ship Longo Drum (spaceship): 2 Points
Hong Kong Station (space station/republic): 2 Points
Mahalzhan System (solar system): 1 Point
Mersta (space station/power plant): 1 Point

So:

(Pavel) Colony Ship Longo Drum (spaceship): 8
(GM) Harvest (planet): 8
(World's) Lilith (planet): 6
(GM) Mersta (space station/power plant): 6
(World's) S.S. Belong (spaceship): 6
(Daryus) Mahalzhan System (solar system): 5
(Daryus) The Insular Nebula (nebula): 5
(Pavel) Hong Kong Station (space station/republic): 4

So, top 6 slots get in, I break any ties needed UNLESS they involve me, but this one DOESN'T involve me, SO:

(Pavel) Colony Ship Longo Drum (spaceship): 8
(GM) Harvest (planet): 8
(World's) Lilith (planet): 6
(GM) Mersta (space station/power plant): 6
(World's) S.S. Belong (spaceship): 6
(Daryus) Mahalzhan System (solar system): 5

That's it for Round 1: These 6 places are going to be in canon-- presuming my math checks out.

Does my math appear to check out?

Your maths checks out... just to show

H 0 3 2 3 8
M 0 3 2 1 6

GM breaks the tie between Insular Nebula and Mahalzhan System.

Player scores so far:
GM       14
Pavel    12

Question:  Would there be less need for tiebreaks if we ordered our choices from 1 to 6 (or as appropriate) in subsequent rounds?

OORT SPIDERS (creature):

Lilimp (plant-creature):
OORT SPIDERS (creature): 2
Veins (plant): 3

Pavel's votes:

1 point   -  Veins
2 points  -  Lilimp
3 points  -  Beryl Poppy

(Daryus) The Beryl Poppy (plant): 4
(GM) Lilimp (plant-creature): 2
(Pavel) OORT SPIDERS (creature): 2
(World's) Veins (plant): 4

World's votes:

The Beryl Poppy (plant): 3 Points
OORT SPIDERS (creature): 2 Points
Lilimp (plant-creature): 1 Points

(Daryus) The Beryl Poppy (plant): 7

(Daryus) The Beryl Poppy (plant): 7
(GM) Lilimp (plant-creature): 5
(Pavel) OORT SPIDERS (creature): 7

The United (alien culture): 1 Point
The Omelasians of Harvest (human culture): 1 Point

The Astani (non-human culture): 4
(GM) Chatters (uplifted post-animal culture): 6
(World's) Cornerstone (human culture): 4
(World's) Harvest's Diner (human culture): 6
(Pavel) Home Culture (post-human culture): 5
(Pavel) Kakapoo (diverse culture): 5
The Omelasians of Harvest (human culture): 4
(GM) The United (alien culture): 2

Daryus' votes:
3 - Kakapoo
3 - Cornerstone
2 - Chatters
2 - Harvest's Diner
1 - The United
1 - Home Culture

The Astani (non-human culture): 4
(GM) Chatters (uplifted post-animal culture): 8
(World's) Cornerstone (human culture): 7
(World's) Harvest's Diner (human culture): 8
(Pavel) Home Culture (post-human culture): 6
(Pavel) Kakapoo (diverse culture): 8
The Omelasians of Harvest (human culture): 4
(GM) The United (alien culture): 3

(GM) Chatters (uplifted post-animal culture): 8
(World's) Harvest's Diner (human culture): 8
(Pavel) Kakapoo (diverse culture): 8
(World's) Cornerstone (human culture): 7
(Pavel) Home Culture (post-human culture): 6
(Daryus) The Omelasians of Harvest (human culture): 4
(Daryus) The Astani (non-human culture): 4
(GM) The United (alien culture): 3

Since the final result involves a tie that does NOT involve me, I declare the following to be in canon:

(GM) Chatters (uplifted post-animal culture): 8
(World's) Harvest's Diner (human culture): 8
(Pavel) Kakapoo (diverse culture): 8
(World's) Cornerstone (human culture): 7
(Pavel) Home Culture (post-human culture): 6
(Daryus) The Astani (non-human culture): 4

So next, I want to ask:

Y'all were totally united in one thing: down-voting The United. So that I can learn from this for the future, I ask: what's up with that? Was it more that you thought they were overpowered, or more that you felt they wouldn't lead to interesting narrative conflict later?

Anyway, we've got:
--magpie people
--smart space gopher people (and their somewhat barbarian cousins on the planet Harvest down below)
--humans
--dark-skinned humans, octopi-people, and magpies with a DIFFERENT culture on planet Kakapoo
--human asteroid miners (belters, if we wanted to use Niven's term)
--space manta people
--Earth's posthuman peoples, very different on the outside but sharing roughly the same culture, including:
----the Darklings of Mercury's Ocean Caves
----the Swimmers of Europa
----the Telempaths of Earth
----the Martian desert dwellers
----the Venusian airship citizens

Any questions or comments about this list before we start talking about round 4?

Re: OOC Thread

I wasn't so much voting down the United per se, but comparing each culture against each other culture and giving points to each (including mine) then translating those points into positions (I still had to tiebreak between the Omelasians and the Astani which tied n points.

That said, my issue with the United was that its unity makes it hard to use them as PCs also, they remind me of the Borg in star trek and the fungus which made the Hungries in The Girl with All the Gifts.

Sorry man, I know that the United has all the concepts that I was adding to the world. With Lilith, the weird things inside the planet, and I can certainly see them as the evolution of the colonists of the S.S. Belong, all ties neatly together...

And it's a bit hard to say but I thinks it's more of a personal preference of mine, I believe Lilith should stay as a planet with no inhabitants, with no intelligent fungal form scouring the Galaxy for knowledge. Just a wild and dangerous planet with mysterious affects if you look to deeply in the planet's function. Just a big ol question mark, if that makes sense.

If the United were seen as a powerful being rather than a culture then that would be much more interesting.  I was planning to have something similar on Venus, but that's only because it's already in the novel I'm working on.

One change from the rules-- I don't think I want 2 submissions per players. These aren't divinely magical gods (though they can claim to be for all I care), so we aren't trying to fill a pantheon.

ROUND FOUR: POWERFUL BEINGS.

1 powerful being (1 per player).
--Each player will describe one very powerful being that exists in the sci-fi world. Each powerful being can be a Space God (example: Q), or something that does not count as a Space God (a super-powerful AI that controls a planet, say). Ask yourself: "Could this powerful being I have in mind maybe win in some sort of contest against a Space God?" If the answer is "yes," then you're probably on the right track.

--NO DEVILS NOR DEMONS NOR ANYTHING LIKE. In fact, no powerful being is allowed to be eeeeeevilllll at all. Selfish, maybe! Mischievous, maybe! Destructive, maybe! Scary, maybe! BUT NOT eeeeeevilllll.

--NO LOVECRAFT.

--DO NOT SUGGEST THINGS THAT ARE EXACTLY LIKE A POWERFUL BEING THAT ALREADY EXISTS ANYWHERE ELSE.

--Each player may create one powerful being.

--Top three recipients of votes will become officially canon as existing in the sci-fi world.

For those who feel that way, my advice is to adapt-- take a concept you're aware exists elsewhere, but change and/or twist it, add a new complication or what-have-you.

ROUND FIVE:
1 super-science thing (1 per player)

--Each player will describe one super-science thing that exists in the sci-fi world. Each super-science thing can be small and common (NetGlasses), or something unique and powerful (The Surya Crystal, a crystal heart that merges with your body and makes you totally immune to heat and fire that also instantly kills any biological being you touch), or in-between. (But the more powerful it is, the more rare it should be.)

Uggghhhh. Round 6 is Character Classes.

I'm stuck, and here's why: Round 6 was supposed to be just 1 submission from each participant, and the top 3 get into canon.

My brain (whispering): But wouldn't two submissions each, and the final 6 things being canon, be good, though...?

Me: What? Maybe... No... Nah, that's no good because (thinks of reasons and vetoes the idea)

I consider ridiculously obvious staples to be givens: "Fighter," "Thief," "Science Person."

Beyond that I presume nothing.

...Since you brought them up, I guess "Pilot" would count as a given, and "Con Person" would also count as a given subset of "Thief."

Feel free to offer things outside of the "Fighter/Thief/ConPerson/SciencePerson/Pilot" box-- AND/OR to offer new sub-specializations of those 5 givens.

But first, we need to settle this debate my brain and I are still having.

Given your answer above, I believe that it makes sense to do our best to try for our very best ideas for classes. My guess is we're unlikely to play all of the classes should six be canonical but it's probably best to allow two each to improve the chances of each of us having a class we really want to play.

Canon

Archaist: 7
Europan Bounty Hunter: 7
The Navigator-Mystic:7
Telepresenters: 7
Mystic: 5
Psi-Haunters: 5

-

So it seems to me-- to put it in crude terms of Toughness, Graceful/Clever, and Weird Powers...

Archaist: thief
Europan Bounty Hunter: fighter/thief
The Navigator-Mystic: mage
Telepresenters: Thief/fighters
Mystic: mage/thief
Psi-Haunters: Mage

Any questions/discussion?

I guess I shouldn't have gone with Nobility. I can tell it was another case of "fun to think about writing, not so fun to think about playing." Too bad-- I had LOTS of other ideas.

It'sssssssss right there in the rules...

ROUND SEVEN:
1 faction (1 per player)

--Each player will describe one faction that exists in the sci-fi world. Each faction can be relatively small (a company of mercenaries, or a cult) or large (a megacorp, or a guild of merchants (or thieves)). Each faction should have something that makes them a bit unique.

--DO NOT SUGGEST THINGS THAT ARE EXACTLY LIKE A FACTION THAT ALREADY EXISTS ANYWHERE ELSE.

--Top three recipients of votes will become officially canon as existing in the sci-fi world.

Nah, I'm a bit bummed Psionics made it in. Also, Mystics contravene the Words. Is or is there not FTL travel in this universe?

So, inconsistent and not sci-fi to me since I consider psionics a form of magic same way as the Force.

I didn't see Mystics as Mystical. There's a hint of psi but mostly they use THe Words and Quantum Tarot. It's not magic except in the Arthur C Clark sense of sufficiently advanced technology.

The mystics are the source of my posionics issue. We now have psi-ghosts.

My issue with Mystics was that they work with FTL and the Words state explicitly that FTL is impossible.

1. I also do not see the Mystics as literally mystical. I don't think it's a problem.

2. Words Vs. Mystics: I think maybe we need to have FTL travel. Is that wrong?

3. More urgent problem in my mind is: How exactly are Mystics and Nav-Mystics different from each other?

Re: OOC Thread

Nav-Mystics do not engender FTL. It's stated in their write-up. I see them as rival organizations of similar people. Nav-Mystics obscure their science with mystic rights more than seeing themselves as 'wizards' or any such.

And I think the better sci-fi avoids FTL in favor of wormholes or things like the Words that approach FTL but don't pass it.

Mystics seem to use psionics as their base of power.

1. Someone else give me a vote about whether we should have FTL or not.

2. So what I'm hearing is that Nav-Mystics pretend to be magical, Mystic-Mystics sort of are, kinda?

Tell you what: Daryus, Pavel, in game terms, please post here with 3 things (each) the Mystic and Nav-Mystic class can do.

Re: OOC Thread

Huh, I saw Nav-Mystics working more like that maxim "Sufficiently advanced tehcnology would look like magic to less advanced civilizations." Basically, they hide behind rituals and mysticism for what, to them, is a scientific study. A mix of physics, linguistics, and archaeology. So, the three main areas that a Nav-Mystic would focus on are:

1) Guild Rituals - So general sleight of hand and subterfuge. Other charisma based skills as well. Nav_Mystics are NOT taught to believe the hokum, just to use it. To go out on your apprenticeship, you need to be sufficiently good at these skills.

2) Linguistics, Archaeology, and Physics - Nav-Mystics do NOT believe that the Words are some unfathomable arcane secret. They believe that there is science involved. So, they study the ancient societies the Words seem derived from, the languages themselves, but also theoretical physics trying to understand how they are connected. Whatever they may have learned, it is not common knowledge but a guidl secret.

3) Space Navigation - Each mystic has an extensive repetoire of star charts and maps memorized. Given their tendency, they probably memorize them in some type of epic poem format or songs. Thus, lay-folk witness a NAv-Mystic muttering ancient sounding chants, but its just a mnemonic for recalling the layout of the solar system or galaxy they are in.

I guess, in D&D terms, that makes them Lore experts, CHA rogues, and pathfinders.

Re: OOC Thread

Mystics are a subset of Nav-mystics (or vice versa).  They use Daryus' abilities 1 and 2, knowing the words and Sumerian society (what we know of it) but some of them instead of working in Space Navigation, use the Quantum Tarot Effect to assist in other areas, allowing them to'navigate'in the virtual spaces of societies rather than the actual three dimensional spaces where ships sail.

As for the FTL question: FTL travel is impossible, Wormholes are just another way to get killed, but with the Words access to Ten Dimensional spaces becomes possible and in those dimensions there are short cuts.

I'm fine with this. To say it (slightly) shorter, FTL travel is impossible in OUR dimension... but there are workarounds.

No no, there has been a misunderstanding. When I said

quote:

What I meant was please post here with 3 DIFFERENT things (each) the Mystic and Nav-Mystic class can do.

"But they can both do similar things!"

I'm fine with that-- in that case, give me three things each that the other ones CAN'T do.

Very well:

Mystics can:

1) Combine quantum tarot with the Words and other linguistic and paralinguistic skills to enable them to navigate the rules and rituals by which society operates in order to bypass security measures (giving them an edge in grifting, hacking, and safecracking)

2)  Use quantum tarot effect to get a picture of recent untoward events and gather clues nobody else can see in order to track down the perpetrators.

3)  Use the Words to step through ten dimensions to travel up to twenty miles across the surface of a planet or from surface to orbit or vice versa... or to travel through time by up to twenty minutes.

Re: OOC Thread

Sure...

1) Eiditic memories - Nav-Mystics are recruited from orphanages and poor areas. Each child is tested for this trait and only those who possess it are taken in. Their memories are then trained to ridiculous extents. Nav-Mystics effectively function as human thumb drives.

2) Nav-Mystics have studied the words and their origin extensively, so they have discovered a variance of the Words that allows them to tune into specific dimensions of the ten. Of particular interest and development by the NM is the motive dimension. THis functionally creates empaths of Nav-Mystics.

3) Nav-Mystics encode most of their science into ritual songs and chants, there fore all NAv-Mystics have precise control of their vocal tracts and are able to mimic or copy most heard sounds including human voices.

1. Boost to certain thief-y skills, check.

2. Predict future with crimebusting specialization, check.

3. Teleportation... twenty-mile limit... I don't approve of the time-travel at all, though. 20 minutes into the FUTURE, yes, okay, but not backwards. I certainly wouldn't allow that in any game of mine, anyway...

1. Perfect memories, check. Big boost on Intelligent checks in regard to "try to remember something useful" rolls.

2. Empath specialization, check.

3. Sound mimicry, check. Among other things, good for Charisma rolls where you're impersonating someone (whom you've heard before) over the phone or what have you.

Okay, I'm fine with the above (save for as noted)... I feel like we've got two distinct classes now.

How about 20 million years into the past and no way to get back?  Or the 20 minutes into the past is only allowed after you've already made the 20 minute jump forward?

Oh wait, that's right, we already tried to start Round Seven...

The GM:

It's tempting to go for 2 per player again, but i THINK i won't this time...? Am I wrong...? If so, explain why we should go for 2 per player again in this thread...

Otherwise, PM me your submissions...

And then we got sidetracked by straightening out FTL and two classes that were too much alike (at first glance).

SO. NOW either send me a submission (by PM) OR post (here) your opinion about why we should be doing 2 factions per player...

Personally, I think we should stick with one. Though we're making an entire universe, their should be like a ton of factions, hundreds. But I think we should focus on ones that are just stand out from the many.

Gonna send my submission in a bit.

3 points United Entertainment
2 points The Voiders
1 point Center Point

Result:

Center Point Incorporated: 4
The House of Leonardo: 1
United Entertainment Group: 5
The Voiders: 2

World's votes:
The House of Leonardo: 3
The Voiders: 2
United Entertainment Group: 1

Result:

Center Point Incorporated: 4
The House of Leonardo: 4
United Entertainment Group: 6
The Voiders: 4

Daryus' votes:
3 - Leonardo
2 - Center Point
1 - Voiders

Result:

Center Point Incorporated: 6
The House of Leonardo: 7
United Entertainment Group: 6
The Voiders: 5

Canon:

Center Point Incorporated: 6
The House of Leonardo: 7

Comment: I'm insulted that The House of Leonardo took my class idea of creative nobility and basically made it a faction, especially since my Voiders didn't make it in.
