(Social) Flesh Fair at Flushing Cemetery

quote:
Flushing Cemetery is a non-sectarian cemetery conveniently located in Queens, NY and is easily accessible by all major arteries.  With over 75 countryside acres, this picturesque cemetery can accommodate burials and interment of cremains in traditional plots, chapel niches, or outside niche locations in our Memorial Garden.

All new Sin-Eaters were approached by a gorgeous Asian man in his late twenties. The sight of him causes your 'sixth sense' to go off alerting you he is strongly touched by death. The man did not stay around long enough to converse or even give his name but he left a mental mark. It was his eyes. They were piercing, cold, severe, and yet somehow... kind. Like a sunny day in the middle of a New York winter, his presence left a chill even as it somehow warmed you.

All the man did was silently hand you a letter. The letter was meticulously crafted in the old way, no print here-- the paper felt expensive and the prose was hand-written in cursive. If you happened to examine it closer, you notice the slight, yet distinct, odor of spiced Rum.

quote:
Greetings to the newly departed! As new Sin-Eaters, you are cordially invited to a wake at Flushing Cemetery in Queens to meet your fellow denizens of the greater New York City area. There will be food and drink provided and a chance to discuss your newly granted... gifts.

The Note also explains how to access the Twilight Network-- a forum dedicated to Sin-Eaters exclusively.

Essentially, if your pc doesn't know the basics of Geist, it is explained here or on the TN.

It is Autumn. A cool evening in Queens when the date and time of the wake arrive. For those that arrive at the appointed time, the designated spot behind the mausoleum chapel is cleared and there are 2 foldable tables decked in an ornate linen table cloth and lined with an assortment of refreshments: Vol-au-vent, Haitian Patties, Akra Fritters, Bannann Peze- fried plantains, pickled peppers, and a selection of meatballs. There are also a selection of drinks, from rum to cranberry juice, and stacks of napkins, plastic cups, and paper plates. There are also two large trashcans that look like they may have been rented from the city.

There is currently no one here besides an old black man in a straw hat and a linen suit. He is smoking a cigar as he watches a large shadow with what looks like a top hat cast some kind of spell.

The Storyteller, for the NPC Le Bawon, rolled 2 successes using 10d10 with the World of Darkness nWoD system with a target of 8, rerolling 10s ((2,8,2,8,1,2,7,5,7,4)).

The old man chuckles, his voice raspy as he mocks the apparition, "I know this is not life-threatening, mon ami, but that was certainly not your best effort."

The Geist gives him a look but seems to say nothing.

Welcome to the first IC thread! Pleae feel free to post in whatever order suits you. If you begin talking to each other there's no need to wait for me. I will only respond when the NPCs are directly interacted with and as of now, only one has shown up. :)

A pickup truck pulled up to the closest parking lot to the meeting location indicated on the letter the handsome Asian guy had handed her. She wasn't really sure what to expect, but she was at least glad to find herself in acres of green. It was a nice respite from all the lights, noise and other unsavory things in the city. In a place like this she felt more at peace.

Once the engine was shut off, a tomboyish-looking Latina in her late 20s hopped out of the truck and took a look around, getting a sense of their surroundings.

"This is it," she said to her passenger. "There's something going on over there," she added, gesturing towards the tables near the mausoleum. "So I'm guessing we've got the right place."

Sandra continued to inspect the scene from afar, waiting for her friend to join her.

Another figure exited the pickup truck, a young man dressed in nothing more tham Transformer's T-Shirt and a pair of blue jeans. His dark-skin was interrupted by irregular patches of scarred pinkish-white flesh. A full head of dreads extended down to his shoulders, dyed partially blonde to match his skin.

"Thanks for the lift, Sandy. It likes like it's gonna be a good time! You sure you okay for it?"

He offers a friendly smile to his Latina friend and waggled his eyebrows playfully.

Having been dropped off by a taxi at 46th Avenue Malcolm strolled the remaining short distance from there to the cemetery chapel in a relaxed manner. With no guide for the nature of the meeting he went for the simple old standby, dressing for a funeral with black suit, tie and trousers and a white shirt, all immaculately clean. He carried a small umbrella hooked over one arm and inhaled the Autumn air with faint satisfaction as he passed through the gates.

Malcolm's pace slowed slightly at the sight of the pair exiting the pickup, given the time of day it seemed likely that anyone here was present for the same reason as him. However the car park was not exactly the place for socialisation. Rather than linger he continued to the destination in the invitation provided.

The scene there caused him to slow slightly but this sort of wake was not entirely new for him. Rather it was the pair that made up the sole guests present at the tables one of who's resemblance to a living shadow made it clear they were not exactly the normal attendee. But then again that had been made more than slightly clear in the invitation provided. So rather than comment he simply advanced towards the pair, nodding to each before indicating the laid out food on the nearby tables, "Good evening. This your get-together or have the hosts stepped away?"

"Anytime," she said in response to Mordecai. "Well, let's hope the food doesn't suck." She let out a soft chuckle. "I think I'll be alright," she added, sounding somewhat unsure of herself. After all, Sandy wasn't the most social person, so parties were not really her scene.

With those words, she headed in the direction of the tables with the small feast. She noticed and older man walk up to the tables and greet the man with a straw hat. Neither of them looked familiar, but she assumed they were all for the same reasons.

Glancing over her shoulder as she felt Cucuy's presence near her, she pushed on and finished the short walk from the parking lot to the creepy soirée. "Hey," she said in greeting to the others present and then just awkwardly stood there, with both hands in her pockets.

The older man looked up in surprise as Malcolm, and shortly afterwards, Sandra and Mordecai approach.

"Ah! Mais Oui!" He looks at his watch and the shadowy figure next to him disappears. "Why you all are early! Please help yourself to some refreshment. The others should be along shortly. Forgive them. 'Ow you say... business calls?" He waves some of the cigar smoke in the air away from your faces apologetically.

The older man makes a friendly bow and shakes the hands of any who offer, "Delighted to meet you all. I am Kristoph-Ryan. Enchante!"

After exchanging brief pleasantries with all new comers, he glances at his watch again, almost nervously but quickly catches himself and smiles.

He pats Malcolm's shoulder with almost too much familiarity. "If you like rum, I have quite a treat for you," He says, pointing to a glass bottle on the table next to him, "Very smooth."

The Q65 pulled away, and Hans walked into the cemetery, feeling a shudder from his observer as they moved away from the growling bus and into the grass and trees of the cemetery.  With a sigh, he detoured to walk on an asphalt path as he approached the gathering, making him one of the later arrivals to the group.

His face was old-- a very gaunt thirty or a happy seventy, depending on how the light hit it.  His clothes were new, khakis and a blue-black flannel shirt somewhat stained with sweat.  His tight-laced hiking boots were not new at all.

"Hello!"  He waved at the group, then immediately descended on the cranberry juice and drank thirstily.  With a quickly-refilled cup in hand, he turned.  His voice was much less hoarse this time.  "Hans, Hans Becker.  So glad to meet a fellow denizen!"  He extended a tan hand and shook Kristoph-Ryan's warmly, then turned to look inquiringly at the others near the table.  "And what shall I call you?"

The roar of a V8 and the screech of tires announces the arrival of the powder blue Pontiac, it surges into the distant parking lot, slews haphazardly into a spot and shudders to a stop.  The engine roars over a few more times before cutting out.

The strong smell of exhaust fumes and burning rubber washes over the parking lot, and then wafts across the area.

The engine clicks loudly as it begins cooling in the night air, a young woman gets out from the driver's side, clearly in mid conversation with someone, "... look, we're early.  I tol' you, was no need to rush."  She pauses, "Well, has been spell since you got really cut lose, okay baby, I forgive you."  She shuts the door and then leans onto the car, almost embracing it.  She gives it another pat on the roof as she straightens and then starts across the parking lot.

When she sees Sandra she hustles over, "SANDRA!  You got an invite too! Oh of course you did," she says as she puts her fist out for a bump.  She nods to Malcolm and extends her hand to shake, "Mr Unsworth," and then to Hans, "hello, pleased to met you," and then to Mordecai, "and you."

Linda walks to the Cemetery.

She isn't quite sure of what to expect, but that doesn't deter her. She is dressed like she always is, leather pants and an oversized leather jacket, plus solid boots.

Her shoulders straigthen when she feels the others, but she doesn't slow down, doesn't hesitate but keeps walking.

Suddenly, she changes direction.

"Juste?", she asks. "Is that you?"

Taking Kristoph-Ryan's offered hand in a brief but firm grip he answered, "Nice to meet you, I'm Malcolm Unsworth," releasing the handshake and stepping back to give the man room.

He repeated his own name in introduction as reply to to Hans' greeting, nodding  at the newer arrival with a polite nod. Juste's greeting earned a tone with slightly more warmth behind it as he shook her head and answered, "Malcolm is fine, especially I'd say in this sort of company. Good to see you." Watching the assorted others arrive he shifted slightly to give others room to approach while changing his field of view to see those approaching.

To the offer of rum he smiled appreciatively, seemingly comfortable with the familiarity of the pat on the shoulder, and replied affirmatively to Kristoph-Ryan's offer with, "Thank you, I'll admit to not being a particular expert when it comes to rum but I'm not going to pass at expanding my horizons."

(Social) Flesh Fair at Flushing Cemetery

It was a difficult night.

That little voice in her head,  her new best friend was loud. Sometimes it was hard to tell if the thing was angry, sad, or feeling needy but what she was, was always needy. She would have thought she being dead would give a being a bit of patience. Yet,  she always NEEDED.

And,  point in fact…  so did Riley.  Perhaps that’s why they were a decent team. Both of them were empty things, trying to fill a void that at least one of them realized would never be filled.

A white SUV pulled into the parking lot of the Cemetery,  and from out the front door slid Riley.  She was dressed to impress as was typical,  a black suit that was tailored to her particular frame.  She brought an electric cigarette to red painted lips,  and took a long slow drag before exhaling from her nostrils.  Causing the area around her to smell faintly of what could be described as overly sweet bubble gum.

The clicking of heels filled the air as she made her way into the graveyard proper.  Her large brown eyes scanned the area, and the very faces that were gathered there. She took another drag on the strange device and exhaled again.

She lifted a hand and gave a wave to the group.  She had forgotten how to do these… introductions that is, so,  she just came out and said it.  “Hey,  Riley Mercier.”

"Sorry Malcolm, thought this meet would be more 'business' than 'casual'," she smiles, and then she hears Linda, "Oh yes!  Hey Linda!"  She puts her fist out for bumping when Linda get's closer.

"Good to met you Riley," she offers a quick shake, "and to the other half who I've never met, I'm Juste l'Requete, here's my card," she hands out hand made business cards (they are clearly half of a blank 3x5 card) that read:

"I know, I don' have real business cards yet, that's waitin until after I graduate the apprenticeship."

Mordecai beams widely as Sandra makes her way towards the festivities, and then takes a pause for a moment to watch everyone come in. Even for a social person like him, there was an unusual feeling of unease; like being the one nerdy kid in a class at school. The feeling caught him by surprise, crashing into him like a wave.

It did not last.

"Fuck!"

His cry was startled, and he grabbed at his shoulder in response, rubbing it a little before grunting and moving closer to the festivities. Now that he's away from the car, it's clear that a Cat 'o nine tails is attached to his belt.

"Nice to meet you all! I'm Mordecai!"

With that, he poured himself shot of rum and knocked it back.

"Very smooth! I like it!."

Sandra was becoming quickly overwhelmed as more and more people arrived. She would much rather be at home with her dogs than have to socialize with these many people. However, she knew she had to put up with all of it in order to meet others like her and Mordecai, and perhaps get some answers to the questions that had been living in her head rent-free since she had made the deal with Cucuy.

"Hey Juste," she said in greeting to the only other familiar face among the small crowd. "Good to see you."

As others introduced themselves, she offered them a quick nod in greeting before following Mordecai's lead and pouring herself a shot of rum and knocking it back. Maybe the alcohol would help calm her nerves.

"I prefer a good mezcal or tequila," she said afterwards. "But that is a damn good rum." With that, she poured herself another shot and repeated the process.

"Sandra Alvarez," she said, introducing herself to the other arrivals that were exchanging names and handshakes.

Kristoph smiles and makes polite-- yet brief-- small talk with all the new comers. He pours a glass of the rum for Malcolm and offers it to him, smiling. "Rhum Barbancourt. It is produced in my home country and goes perfect with the work we do." He pauses a moment and watches Sandra and Mordecai down their cups and gives them a wink. "Yes, it is my favorite."

Returning his attention to Malcolm, he says, "Drink it slow. Savor the taste. It may take a moment of adjustment," Then he turn outwards, towards the group at large, "And s'il te plaît... don't stand on ceremony! I am very good friends with the owners of a restaurant in Brooklyn. They are the generous benefactors of the feast and will be much heart-broken if there is a crumb left." He motions towards the table filled with delicacies.

A look passes over his face, quickly, then the smile returns. "Ah, it seems as if another of my Krewe has arrived with... a guest."

The courier that all the new Sin-eaters should recognize, the silent beauty that left such a psychic impression, walks into the cemetery gates with possibly the most alluring woman anyone here has ever seen. The man looks... tired. The woman, the stark contrast.

The Asian man checks his phone as he approaches and smiles, "I thought you never showed up on time?" He asks Kristoph-Ryan. The beauty on his arm, robed in green, smiles at all the guests and nods.

Kristoph pats the Asian man's shoulder and laughs, "You forget. I am trying to make a good impression tonight, mon ami."

With a cough, Kristoph signals for everyone to pay attention, "Beautiful people, I'd like to introduce you all to Adongo Mwangi," He says, motioning to the woman in the green dress, "She is New York's underworld expert. Able to guide you to finding anything you may desire... If you can afford the price..."

If you wish to analyze deeper, give me a separate wits + empathy but only if you succeeded at the first roll. If you get enough success, I will PM you more info.

"...And her chaperone for the evening, is no other than another 3rd of my personal krewe, Damian Wu. You all should have 'ad the pleasure of meeting 'im already."

Adongo will greet everyone politely in a way that demonstrates an education in the old ways of class and manners. She is cheerful and poised, not quite bubbly but very warm. She will only head to get refreshments after she ensures she has greeted everybody present.

Damian gives everyone a nod but doesn't approach anybody specifically. In his free hand he is gripping something small and metallic. If no one interrupts him, he will start loading a plate with food and find a place to sit further away at the edge of the crowd.

Nodding briefly at Juste's reply Malcolm did not remark, watching her and the others interacting thoughtfully. Mordecai's sudden profanity earned a surprised glance but when the man moved straight onto introductions Malcolm did not remark on it, instead nodding in greeting to him as he made his introduction and giving Sandra a similar inclination of his head at hers.

At Kristoph's recommendation he inclined the cup to him with a brief, "Santé, before taking an initial sip of the rum. He followed it with another slightly deeper one, moving the cup to a different grip in his hand to rest at his side as he savoured the taste. Looking back to Kristoph as the man directed them to the refreshments he asked, "Your friends have managed an impressive layout, do they cater wakes often or is this an exception for you?"

The shift in his exception at the arrival of the others was noted but not remarked on as Malcolm turned to regard the others taking a moment to remember that term. Krewe, yes, he could recall what that was in this context. The attractive pair approaching were a somewhat eye-catching sight but he managed not to stare too much, instead providing the same courteous greeting he had for everyone else so far. He did not make any effort to keep either in conversation as they approached the food, exchanging brief pleasantries with Adonga and leaving Damian a clear run at the tables.

With those two occupied he asked Kristoph, "Do you know if we're waiting on many more? I'm happy with the chance to socialise but I don't really want to get onto topics others who haven't arrived yet might want to be present for."

To the dead, this meeting must appear like a Superbowl finale. But what's the game?

Sandra observed as the handsome Asian man and the beautiful Adongo Mwangi, as she was introduced, made their entrance. She listened as Kristoph spoke, fixing herself a plate of food once she realized that her stomach was grumbling and back-to-back shots of rum on an empty stomach may not have been the greatest idea.

She remained quiet while she ate off her plate, observing and listening to the others. Sandy was completely oblivious to whatever was going on with Adongo. After all, she had never been good at reading people. She preferred the company of animals after all, who were much easier to understand and get along with as far as she was concerned.

When Mordecai asked his question of Adongo, Sandra raised an eyebrow slightly, curious as to what her friend was getting at. She continued to pile food into her mouth though, because she was both hungry and it was an excuse not to talk.
