For many months, bands of giants from the Iron Mountains have been raiding lands of men to the south. These incursions have grown in frequency and in violence over time. On the 3rd day of Midsummer, in the year 896 (the one year anniversary of the initial attack), the mayors of the neighboring towns of Blackwall, Hilltop, and Westview, gathered to memorialize the occasion and to formulate a plan.

In this meeting, the mayors agreed that their towns were ill equipped to defend themselves individually, and that some sort of combined effort was needed to turn the tide against the giants. The idea of joining the militias from each town to form a combined army was given serious consideration, but ultimately rejected for a variety of reasons. Instead, the mayors signed a resolution, calling for a small party of brave souls to conduct a covert mission into the Iron Mountains.

You are one of those brave souls.

The primary purpose of the mission will be reconnaissance: (1) locate the giants' stronghold; (2) map the surrounding area; (3) assess the giants' numbers; and (4) collect any other information that might be useful.

A secondary objective is sabotage, if the opportunity presents itself (e.g., poison the water supply, set fire to the stronghold, or some other singular act that might do considerable damage to the enemy.)

Engaging in direct/open combat with the giants is entirely within the party's discretion, but such a course of action is discouraged, for two simple reasons: (1) the odds of success/survival would be extremely low, and (2) the likelihood of violent reprisal against the towns would be extremely high.

The three towns have pooled their treasuries as a reward for anyone who completes the mission. One portion will be paid for locating the stronghold and mapping the surrounding area. The second portion will be paid for a successful act of sabotage. The final portion will be paid if/when the mission ultimately ends the giants' attacks.
