The troupe smiles at the infidels, "We saw the sign, the sign of Tempura, and it opened up our eyes. The mists parted for us. Let us part them for you."

Wait. The elves learned some secrets of Japanese cooking and it enabled them to dispel the mists?

Unfortunately, I am not sure how we could have told you- they were right there and would have heard the suggestion. (Unless they do not speak elvish, since they did not respond to it, but most of us do.)

Re: OOC#2

Personally I'd question whether they were alive to have thoughts.  Given where we are I assume everything is undead and covered in powerful illusion.  However I think the paladin screened for evil and we heard nothing back about it, though zombies are not evil.

I think there were three, maybe four, Easter eggs on offer in that last room.

Re: OOC#2

Well, the picture is of NU’EST (not BTS), and they are a K-Pop band, but unfortunately, I know K-dramas more than K-pop.

Tomba- Good thoughts! Some of this might or might not apply, based on the DM though.
The ESP spell specifically excludes all of the undead, but the Helm description does not. So I would think intelligent undead would still have thoughts that could be read, if that was the case. Given the conversation, they seemed intelligent, and their arguments meant it was not simply programming. But that is a DM call- I suppose we will have to experiment to find out if the helm would work on them or not.

Detecting Evil- you are right that zombies are not evil- they are neutral. However, some DMs have skeletons and zombies display a faint evil, since the animation of the dead is not a good act, the undead tie to the negative plane, and their vulnerability to holy water. I have no idea if our DM does so; that would be something we will have to see in play- unless Rusk has had experience in this and already knows the answer? V definitely doesn't.

Re: OOC#2

I agree with you V, and I've also played in a game where the DM judged undead 'thoughts' were just too foreign to be read.

I'm not sure that increasing the helms power past the spells power is practical, given (my assumption) that an ESP spell would be used as part of the process to create a Helm of Telepathy.

I also see animation of the dead as a DM's call in regards to whether it is evil or not.  As an example a good cleric animating deceased enemy to defend women and children from being slaughtered in an attack becomes a grey area, if the clerics god allows the cleric to learn the spell in the first place.  ADND is filled with these moral situations as we know, which is partly why we have a DM to set the rules of their game.

For us, IC it'll be trial and error for the casters as they aren't likely to know until they try.

This need not be academic. Orum could return to the troupe, attempt to read their thoughts, and surely return to report his findings.

True, true, and they might be the way through.  Personally I was looking for a fight because I don't like leaving creatures that aren't friendly behind, but Tomba isn't front line staff so he's not going to be facing the brunt of it.

Re: OOC#2

Tomba- possibly- but the helm of telepathy (which does not mention ESP at all) already is considerably more powerful than the spell, so there is no practicality to be lost. ESP only allows the reading of surface thoughts, but the helm allows two-way communication, empathy, and implanting suggestions, as well as reading thoughts. The helm is also harder to block than the spell. (FWIW, I think they added telepathy as a spell to later editions of the games, and placed it at 5th level.)

But I agree- while we could go back and test it now... let's not. ^_^;

And as for fighting, well, you would have hated our first encounter with the dervishes. *L*
V's rule of thumb is more to avoid combat when we can- if they do not attack us, or seem likely to do so due to situation, allegiance, or known traits, she is fine avoiding combat whenever possible.

As for Easter eggs, no doubt the lyrics mean something, but I doubt they are referring to 'As you believe' by TOHOSHINKI, and that is all that comes to mind.
Likewise, there was a children's game show in the 90's called 'Masters of the Maze', but that also seems unlikely.
I have no idea what Kordan might mean- perhaps someone else does?

On the other hand, 'We saw the sign, the sign of Tempura, and it opened up our eyes' pretty clearly is a variation of Ace of Base's 'The Sign'.
But I have no idea why tempura is substituted in there, other than that they wanted to eat us. (None of the PCs come from an Asian heritage that I know of, although at least one player is.)

Re: OOC#2

I understand it was the T in NU'EST, but it struck me as odd, since tempura is Japanese, but the band is Korea. Tteokbokki would have fit better.
So I was wondering if it had a second, additional meaning beyond the acronym that was its own Easter egg, since there are some we apparently have missed.

Tomba Cotton:
My assumption is that magical items would appear magical to the mage that cast the spell.  They don't glow as such, so everyone else would also know they are magical.

For this edition, it says the caster detects the magic radiations, not that there is a glow, so the rest of us are blissfully ignorant. Hopefully we can trust the caster not to mislead everyone! *L*

Also in this edition, nearly all magic swords (sole exceptions are the Flame Tongue, Frost Brand, Holy Avenger, Life Stealing, and Sharpness swords) and all magic daggers shed light when drawn from their scabbard- but that seems to be nearly always house ruled away.

DM- what type of sword is it? Long sword?
