Characters in Europe

Faulkner, Lord John: The Earl of Somerset, who for some reason wants a certain English nobleman dead, and is willing to pay for it
Federmann, Wilhelm: A senior merchant factor for the Welser family, currently working in Spain
Fraser, Duncan: Commander of a Scots cavalry regiment, currently in service of Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden; he thinks rather highly of Karl Friedrich von Bodenwerder

Characters in the Americas

Danvers, Sir Nicholas: A friend of a certain nobleman´s family, and by extension of the nobleman himself. Resides in Port Royale.
Faulkner, Sir Daniel: A cousin of the Earl of Somerset. Should he become aware of a certain English nobleman´s presence, he would most likely try to aid his cousin´s efforts to have that nobleman killed. Probably resides in Barbados.
Pallache, Sinan: A privateer in Dutch service operating in the Caribbean; "Sinan Pallache" is probably a fake name. He was formerly a merchant in Vigo, Spain, and secretly a practicing Jew, which forced him to flee the Spanish Inquisition. He owes his survival to Solana´s help. Current whereabouts unknown; Tortuga would be an educated guess.
Ximenez de Irala, Domingo: An agent of the Spanish Inquisition, the one who almost arrested Sinan Pallache. He harbors a grudge towards Solana for aiding Pallache´s escape, but at the time could not convince his superiors to let him detain Solana. Current whereabouts unknown.

Organisations

Buccaneers: Bands of hunters living on and near Hispaniola, made up primarily of escaped indentured servants, deserted sailors, and fugitives from the law; they make a living selling provisions (smoked meat in particular) to passing ships, but are not averse to hiring out as part of privateer or pirate crews on occasion.
Cimarrones: Communities of escaped African slaves living away from civilisation all over the Caribbean, alongside the indigenous Taino tribes and often intermarrying with them.
Knights of Vera Cruz: The Most Excellent and Noble Order of the Knights of the True Cross - an order of Catholic fanatics whose primary task is to spread the Catholic faith (and the Spanish Empire) across the Americas. (They are not a historical group, don´t bother googling them)
Spanish Inquisition: Technically part of the Catholic Church, but in practice more loyal to the Spanish Crown, the main purpose of the Spanish inquisition is to ferret out heretics (particularly those secretly practicing the Jewish or Muslim faith) as well as unsanctioned magic-users anywhere in the Spanish Empire. These days, everybody expects the Spanish Inquisition.
Welser Family: A dynasty of bankers, merchants and investors residing in Augsburg, serving the Austrian branch of the Habsburg family and relatively recently ennobled by them. The Welser family are active primarily in Catholic nations (Spain, Austria, to a lesser degree France) and their overseas empires. The territory of Klein-Venedig ("Little Venice", modern day Venezuela) is governed by them and their agents.

The Ship

The characters are travelling on the sloop Sea Maiden.

The ship has a crew of 14, including the Captain, Tobias Winslow, and the first mate, who is only known by his first name, Samuel. The Captain and Samuel appear to be old friends, having worked and traveled together since before the captain acquired his ship.

Of the twelve sailors, three have been working for Captain Winslow for many years, and appear unquestioningly loyal to him. Five more have been around for a few while, while the remaining for came aboard during the last few port calls of the ship.

Captain Winslow is regarded by the crew as strict but fair, while Samuel is considered a merciless taskmaster with little tolerance for errors, especially those of inexperienced sailors. The sailors, except for the three longest-serving ones, are grumbling about discipline, though all but newest hires respect the Captain and Samuel for their experience and their ability to get the ship and crew through any kind of situation safely.
