Game Introduction

Yes, that campaign.

My idea is to run the Peru chapter of the epic campaign Masks of Nyarlathotep, and then check in with players about running the full story - which is a massive, sprawling adventure that covers multiple continents, and many terrors beyond your imagining.

We would begin in Lima, Peru proper, at the Bar Cordano.

Note: the game is rated Mature because there will be substantial room for violence, monstrous doings, evil people doing evil stuff, etc. I am perfectly happy to have romance in the game, but sex would be fade-to-black. The game is primarily about mystery and adventure, but is in a dark universe. The "mature" part has more to do with Lovecraft's brand of existential darkness. I prefer adults (18+) but this is not a hard rule and if you are a mature adolescent that can be fine, too. I will also solicit any "hard No's" you have on content (privately), and will accommodate within reason: obviously some 'bad stuff' is baked into the story.

Game Introduction

I would like each player to take responsibility for one kind of note-taking. This is because Call of Cthulhu can get complicated, and it will helpful to "crowd-source" responsibility for tracking NPCs and other key information. I came up with five journal tasks. Since we presently have 5 PCs, you can each claim one from the list below (first come, first serve), just post accordingly. If players later drop out, I'll just move their journal task to someone else. The reward for good journaling is the opportunity for more experience points. (More on that, later.)

The Journaling Roles.

The Cast. Track NPCs with brief notes, including how friendly your interactions have been.

Inventory. Track key items, materials. You're the quartermaster. Claimed by Jennifer.

What's Next?Track possible leads that you may follow in this or other places.

Key Documents. Exception to the 'Inventory' role is letters, which there are plenty of in this campaign. Claimed by Madelyn.

Survival Guide. Track encounters with monsters or villainous foes, for the sake of tactics. Claimed by Perry.

Game Introduction

We will use RPOL's Dice Roller function for tracking dice rolls publicly. In some rare cases I will roll privately, but I prefer to "show my hand" usually.

This is fairly easy to use, appearing as 'Dice Roller' in the tab at the top of your page.

Remember that the basic dice rolling mechanic in CoC is usually percentile. So you roll a d100 (two d10s), lower being better (because you try to roll under your skill/attribute/whatever). Special dice rolls include attacking with weapons (which use d4, d6, etc.) or sanity point loss (again, a variety of dice magnitudes).

Not played CoC 7E before? No worries. Check out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wouSEjZHj9U
It is a fairly concise introduction to the game.

I will track the key items, be the quartermaster. It seems easy enough.

Game Introduction

Just one other request from this side for now, this one being optional: please do PM me if you have any personal requests about content we should not cover. Cthulhu is a horror game. So there will obviously be violence, gore, etc. However, if you have personal limits you don't want to see in the game, due to phobias, personal experiences, etc., please do let me know; obviously no explanation required. I might just ask for more detail to make sure I'm honoring your request(s) if any.

Things worth mentioning here.

1 -- We will NOT have graphic sexuality or sexual assault. However, body horror including pregnancy or 'stuff under the skin' is on the menu. Also, romance is fully possible with NPCs, some may be flirts, etc. etc. Think "fade to black".

2 -- Some NPCs may be racist/sexist, but I will not use offensive language, and (obviously!) this will not be glorified / these ideas will not be validated. To be clear, we're not talking KKK here - it's just that some characters have discriminatory beliefs based on it being 1920s, so might treat others less warmly based on that, etc.

3 -- Other than offensive group label kind of stuff, swears will likely abound in some areas. So words like "fuck" will come up. Basically, if a word is used to specifically derogate a social identity group, I don't want it (& won't use it) in the game.

4 -- Violence may be extreme at points. Limbs coming off, eyes gouged out, other bad stuff. Again, if you have limits, let me know. It might still happen but I can either tone down the language, or use implications rather than graphic descriptions.

5 -- Characters can lose their sanity. This is done in a 'gamified' way. So characters can become mentally ill, etc. I would rather keep this and treat it seriously. If you have hard limits, let me know, but sanity as a part of the game is very deeply built in and we can't just "not have it". We could, however, treat it more as a 'stress' mechanic with emerging 'complications' rather than describing as "schizophrenia" and other specific real-world problems, if people have lines here.

Amazing, thanks all! I created Notices for each of your 'journals'. I think this will really, really help, especially if we end up taking on the full campaign. ;)

I will gladly take "The Cast" journal and will write it in-character à la Hercule Poirot.
