Introduction and General Discussion

Hi everyone. Welcome to... duh duh duh... Carnival of Madness!

Before I start, let me set out some rules, one vague and one strict. First, please, post once or twice a day if you can; if you can't, please let me know ahead of time, and your character will hang around looking cool in your absence. Second, PLEASE, no discussion of contemporary politics, religion, social norms, or things of that nature.

Here is the game description.

It is Friday, Halloween!, in 1970.

Richard M. Nixon is president. Popular songs include “Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Simon & Garfunkel, “Let It Be” by the Beatles, and “War” by Edwin Starr. The first Earth Day was celebrated, and millions across the United States are protesting the war in Vietnam. Popular movies nclude MASH, Patton, and Catch-22. The average annual income is $9,400, the average monthly rent is $140, and gasoline costs 36ยข per gallon. You can buy a car for under $2,000 and a house for under $24,000.

You're all young people, early 20s, who live in Cambridge, Massachusetts. You have all been friends since you were kids. And you're in a band called The Meddling Kids! With a van!

The characters are Douglas Stevenson, Brandy Williams, Sean "Bongo" Levinson, and Kelly Donahue. Bongo has already been taken (of course, somebody called dibs on the stoner), but the others are available to however wants them.

Doug and Brandy are students at Boston University (BU), while Kelly attends Harvard on a full academic scholarship. Bongo is a bit of a drifter who sells weed out of a van down by the river.

In addition to their other activities, they have a band called Meddling Kids. Brandy’s the singer, Doug plays guitar, Kelly plays keyboard, and Bongo plays the drums.

They share an apartment in Cambridge, which they can only afford because Doug’s parents are extremely wealthy. Despite having a room, Bongo lives in his van most of the time.

The Meddling Kids have a gig at the Wayward Inn in Dunwich this weekend, and they figured why not head out to western Mass early to blow off some steam at the Carnival Pandemonium in Aylesbury. It should be a blast! While you're there, you can advertise your band's gig tomorrow, and Bongo can maybe sell some weed.

Douglas Stevenson. Doug is BU’s star quarterback. He is majoring in Art History, but his real goal is to become either a pro football player or a rock star, depending on which career takes off first. The Jock.

Brandy Williams. Brandy is a sociology major at BU and works evenings as a waitress at a fancy Boston seafood restaurant called Blue Heaven. Her goal is to go into politics.

Sean "Bongo" Levinson. Sean (called Bongo by his friends) has been a stoner since middle school and began selling weed in high school. He had a terrible family life and spent most of his time with Doug, Brandy, and Kelly. Bongo provides transportation for the band, and in return, the group pitches in to maintain the van and pay for gas. They often buy Bongo his food, which consists mainly of burgers and milkshakes.

Kelly Donahue. Kelly is majoring in psychology with a minor in pharmacology and is by far the smartest one in the group. She works part-time as a lab assistant at West Pharmaceuticals in Arkham.

Got it?

(One more detail: the Sanity rules have been slightly tweaked for this scenario because of its peculiarities. I'll get into that when the time comes if need be.)

In reply to Chris Yog-Dossoth (msg # 1):

Contemporary to them in 1970 or anachronistic discussion of these topics of today?

Discussion that might piss off people in 2022. Most of us don't actually know each other in real life and have no idea what we believe. It's best to avoid contemporary real-life topics.
