Pre-Game Thread
Welcome.  I'm looking forward to building up some story for yall.  Feel free to ask any questions you may have.  I'm going to lay out some options below and see how yall feel about different variants/options.  Just let me know what you think!

1.  Homebrew or adventure path?  I'm open to either.  Realistically, even running an AP, I'll probably have to tinker with mechanics a fair bit, so I don't know how much of the real "work" an AP will solve.  If yall have an AP you would prefer, let me know which one.

2.  What level would yall like to start at?

3.  Are there any specific house rules yall would prefer?  I have my own to suggest in the future, but don't want to overwhelm you here.

4.  Do you want a base of operations, or to be jetsetting travellers?

Hey all.  I'm just checking in on the questions above.  I think we resolved 1 as yall preferring Homebrew.  So maybe we can talk a bit about the overarching story yall would be interested in.  If I recall, you had level 3ish as your starting point.  I think you'd said you would like a base of operations, but we hadn't done much with that idea.  Would you like it to already be somewhat established, or something that develops over the course of the game?  Something you already are in charge of, or something where currently yall are lower-level initiates?

Just wanted to pop in and say we've been discussing things on our end. One of the weird downsides of us knowing each other in meatspace is that you see dead silence, where we are having hundreds of posts worth of discussion on the drive in to work.

I'll try to finalize some details with mala regarding some of the questions here and we'll let you know by end of day what we've decided on, or what we may want your input on.

No worries at all.  Mostly I want to ensure it doesn't seem like I've dropped out of the conversation on my end.  I'm an rpol veteran, so I know that is not a great thing in games.

Quick follow-up. That discussion ended up being longer than I thought. We're... still working.

Okay! So we've finally managed to settle on some decisions. mala will be playing a Human Cleric/Fighter, while I will be playing a... well, actually, that depends on you a little bit. Base scenario is a Drow Arcanist/Factotum. On that last note, we've been assuming Eberron, since it's the setting you seem to prefer, but we're not especially picky.

I have a "custom race" that isn't really very custom, basically bridging the gap between a Drow and a Drow Noble, that puts their point total roughly in line with the Featured races at 14 points. Its stats are as follows:

Racial TraitsValueRP
TypeHumanoid (elf)0
Base SpeedNormal0
Ability ScoresAdvanced (+4 Dex, –2 Con, +2 Int, +2 Wis, +2 Cha)4
LanguagesLinguist1
ImmunitiesElven immunities2
Skill BonusPerception2
SkillsWeapon Familiarity2
SensesDarkvision 120 ft.3

In settings where drow are more sinister, I call it a "Drow Infiltrator", though in Eberron I suppose it's more "Drow Envoy". Basically, they lose all of the drow (noble and lesser) magical abilities, so no Spell Resistance, no spell-like abilities, as well as poison use, and in return they lose light blindness and gain the Linguist language feature.

If that's kosher with you, then I'll go with that, otherwise standard drow (same point total, different abilities), since I doubt you'll want me totaling the Drow Noble's whopping 41 RP.

I'll let mala explain her character concept to you, but in my case, I see him doing essentially the reverse of the typical Khorvaire adventurer. When traffic started between Khorvaire and Xen'drik, he hopped a boat going back the other way and started exploring across Khorvaire. Given a few decades, he's essentially gone native, though he definitely keeps some of the trappings of his Xen'drik heritage. For instance, I'm considering using chitin armor if it ends up being feasible without hurting my AC too much.

The custom race looks fine.  And I'm always fine with reskinning things, so if you would like armor, weapons, spell appearance, etc, to at least visually appear more thematic, that's fine.  Hypothetically that could be taken to a problematic extreme (making a set of full plate look like dancing scarves), but we can burn that bridge when we get there.

Eberron is probably the best experience you'll get out of me, just due to familiarity, but I'm open to using others.

So your background opens up a relevant question; overall, what sort of goals would yall have for your characters?  These could be goals the characters explicitly share (rising in power in a particular region), or things you the player would like to explore that the character may not (needing to go back to Xen'Drik, and dealing with people from the past.).

Y'know, you mentioned concerns of Mary Sue-ness in the other game, so I'd just like to point out that I'm playing a custom-race drow gish. Yes, this does make me feel dirty.

Long as yall are enjoying the concept and (hopefully) the execution, I don't see harm in characters that can superficially resemble others.  Just ask Francis.

Demonstrated to mala why Thou Shalt Not Roll Stats via RPoL.

14, 12, 13, 11, 13, 10, 4d6r1

I've consistently rolled better than that on 3d6 strict. In fact...

15, 12, 13, 15, 11, 10, 3d6

Yyyep.

Yeah, rpol is pretty merciless.  I would recommend either an array, or point buy.

Currently doing hand-rolled, but if you're not happy with the results I can do some kind of point-buy. Hate arrays.

Correction: I'm not happy with the results. After racial adjustments it's too good at too much. Gonna reroll it and see if I can get something less skewed.

I posted typical house rules.  One rule I didn't put in, because it's quite divisive, is the ability to add Dexterity to ranged weapon damage (but not typically ranged touch attacks) by default (replaced with Str on Composite weapons).  This often sparks strong feelings.  But my thought is that point-for-point, ranged combat is worse than melee in Pathfinder, and I feel there are a ton of unnecessary restrictions for this combat style.  Not the least of which is a 2-feat entry fee just to be able to function normally in many fights.

If yall would like that, it would apply to enemies as well.  But I won't put it in if yall don't plan to use it.

I;'m not sure how far into chargen yall are, but I recalled that Nowhere had asked about different systems at one point.  I'm not super familiar with actual published systems, but I do have two alternate setting/mechanics that are usable.

The first is one I made for the Fallout universe.  Mechanics are essentially a classless d20 system, where you have a certain amount of points to buy up class attributes such as BAB, skills, etc.  Since this would be a higher-powered game, we could add in some class features that could be appropriate.

The second is a very simple d10 system that was made for more modern, but not very mechanically complex games.  The adventure I had written for it originally was essentially inspired by many pulp 80's horror movies.

I know this is pretty late to be putting this out there, but if yall are interested in something other than PF/Eberron, I'm open to discussing those.
