Setting Information

Meadowbrook

Meadowbrook is a small walled town located on the edge of the kingdom, bordering wild woods.  The woods haven't been all that wild for a while, with little more than isolated groups of goblins attacking now and then.

Farms dot the countryside around the town.  The town itself has a decent set of merchants and services, a town guard to protect against goblin raids and keep the peace, and a mayor with associated bureaucracy.

A decent road connects Meadowbrook with the rest of the Duchy, and through it the rest of the kingdom.  Traders and travelers come to Meadowbrook regularly.

Calbert Farm

A modest farm on the southwestern reaches of the land controlled by Meadowbrook.  While there are people that live isolated in the wild woods beyond, Calbert's farm represents the edge of what passes for civilization in this area.  The farmhouse rests on a small rise, and you can just see the walls of Meadowbrook in the distance.  It's about half a day's walk from the farm to Meadowbrook.

Old man Calbert is gruff and always seems to bear a scowl.  His wife passed years ago, and his daughter Donetta left to marry a woodsman who lived in the wild woods.

The Three Divines

There are several old women who tend the shrines to the three Divines who are happy to tell the old stories.  None of them tell quite the same old stories, but the overall gist is similar.  The shrines themselves are little more than weathered pieces of stone at this point, about the size of a kneeling person, but you can imagine they were carved into likenesses at some point in the past.  They're set onto stone altars that are exposed to the elements in a small park inside the city walls.

The three Divines are Life, Death, and Time.  The locals apparently don't anthropomorphize their deities.  According to the stories, Life came first, but (paraphrasing heavily from the stories) creating life that was static was pretty boring, so Time came along to give the creations something to do.  One day Death showed up to handle overcrowding, and they've been in a relatively stable three-way relationship ever since.  Each is seen to handle a critical part of the world.

People offer trinkets to the shrines.  Flowers, rocks, pretty leaves, etc.  A few people will pray at the shrines, but never for very long.  The three Divines apparently don't take much notice of individual people, being so busy running the universe.

Magic in Meadowbrook

In terms of magic, there are a couple of shops that offer magical services.  One shop owner can cast spells of mending and repairing (apparently different spells, depending on what it is that needs fixed), and another can cast enhancement spells of various types (mostly on materials, it seems).  There's talk of mages in other cities, and of course the King's Wizard is said to be a  mighty mage, but nobody in Meadowbrook has met anyone who knows any serious mage.

Setting Information

Duchy of Dunshire

The Duchy of Dunshire is the most remote of the kingdom's duchies.  The Duke of Dunshire spends much of his time at the kingdom's capital, leaving the maintenance and protection of his lands to his subordinates.

Dunshire itself is on the inner edge of the Duchy, as far from Meadowbrook as is possible to get and still be in the same Duchy.

Setting Information

Kingdom of Galth

Generally referred to as the Kingdom by its human inhabitants, Galth covers enough area that most commoners think it extends over the entire world.  The King of Galth rules this vast area by means of his Dukes, appointed heads of different areas of the Kingdom.

The Rangers

While many claim to be a ranger, few can honestly claim to be a Ranger.  This elite group of woods-wise hunters serve as the King's eyes and ears throughout the Kingdom and occasionally beyond.  Rangers that get to be too slow for the job generally retire to their hometowns.
