15. The Sleeping Podog (OOCs)

The Sleeping Podog is the name of one of the pubs in Far-Go.

As such, this is the thread to post OOC comments and questions and just generally kibitz if you want... just like you would at your local pub.

That's a good point! I don't think I could roll that many 1's with REAL dice. So, sure, do it!

Ha-ha! Yeah, I noticed that! Feast or famine...

While the new rolls do seem to push the limit for an 'average', I don't really see a problem. According to most of the Gamma World rules, characters supposed to die anyway.

15. The Sleeping Podog (OOCs)

I've got a couple of issues to discuss.

FIRST ISSUE: RANDOM MUTATIONS vs. CHOICE

As near as I can remember (and tell from looking over the 1e rules again), all mutations were randomly rolled for.

Over the years, one of the things that started to bother me was having abilities forced on my character, particular ones that were useless and you only got after playing your character for years. Other games have been changing that, giving players a choice of abilities.

So that brings me to my Character Generation rule that says you can choose your mutations.

The problem with that is a player is only going to choose the GOOD mutations. Considering that on one of the later editions, an option on the Random Mutations table is Player's Choice. So that's about the same thing, right?

Is that a bad thing, though?

Maybe if any additional mutations are generated randomly that might compensate for it.

SECOND ISSUE: STARTING LOCATION

A problem I had with the 1e Gamma World (or maybe it was 2e) was that there didn't seem to be any HOPE in the game. Sure, it was about survival, but it was so far after the Event that caused the problem that survival just for the sake of survival seemed rather pointless.

From the basic game, I never got the impression that there was any reason to keep surviving. Made it hard for me to want to play the game.

So, I came up with a community whose intent was to rebuild.

Now, Famine in Fargo seems to have used the same set up... in a way. I'm not really thrilled with the Fargo set up, so I'm open to suggestions. We're still doing the adventure, but characters don't have to be from Fargo itself.

Personally, positive mutations is not an issue to my mind as survival of those with superior (i.e. - positive) mutations would be more likely...  Any mutations picked up during the game due to exposure would be equally likely to be positive or negative...

You could choose to limit the pool of positive mutations selectable at character creation or have all selections be subject to approval to avoid godling characters...

I'm not entirely sure how you do Famine if players aren't from there since the entire premise is the rite of adulthood...

15. The Sleeping Podog (OOCs)

As you may have heard, Southwest Florida where I  live got clobbered by Hurricane Ian. Once again, we've lost power. With Irma, we lost it for 10 days. It could be longer this time as a couple of substations got trashed and there's almost a million people without power now across the six counties.

Currently using my friend's hot spot from his phone, but there's still the problem of charging up my computer and his cell phone.

So, not sure how much I'll be able to post before we get power back. No gas stations are operable because their pumps are electrical and they don't have power either. Most stores were closed today, but a few restaurants managed to open to feed the people that can't cook at home now.

Lots of trees down, and some damage to houses and yards. Six houses on our block lost their back porches. Our fence barely survived, but it's leaning because the ground got so soaked. Lost a few solar panels. But other than that, made it through without any damage to the house (except the back porch (the lanai) is 50% gone) and we're all intact--people, cats and dogs.

Good suggestion about limiting Mutations.

Fargo could be looking for help from outsiders that are in town. I could still use the Rite of Passage just modify the town.  Besides, how would your character fit into the Rite of Passage?

15. The Sleeping Podog (OOCs)

Wow... I grew up in Lakeland, Fl so I'm pretty familiar with hurricane season. I'm just glad everyone is safe.

Take as much time as you need to get your life resettled, I'm in no hurry.

As for fitting a mutated panther into the rite of passage, I would think it is easier to maintain the rite by expanding the village to include mutated animals (and by extension, a new necklace color) than trying to fit outsiders into the rite...  but, you're the DM so I bow to your preference. =)

15. The Sleeping Podog (OOCs)

Yea! I've got electricity in the house again! Got restored Friday afternoon. Expected it to take another week because our power line goes through a transformer on a telephone pole that snapped in half and was laying on the ground with the power line laying across the road.

Internet access didn't come till late Friday night.

I wasn't able to work on this game as much as I wanted/needed to because, without power, I could only work on my laptop for a few hours a day before it needed charged.

Anyway... stuff that's up...

Starting Location. I went with your idea, Kitara. Hadn't completely processed the adventure yet, so your idea made the most sense.

Revised list of Mutations. It's a lot... at first glance, but I broke out many of the multiple choice options into separate entries, so Plant Parts is pretty extensive.

Starting Equipment.

Character sheets.

Jumping into this game!

My research indicates that Rocket (Rocky) Raccoon saw publication before Gamma World 2nd Edition, which is where the Dabber first shows up, so I'm guessing that, besides the Beatles song, the comic book was the inspiration for the Dabber. There's just too much similarity between the two for there not to be a connection.

Can't play a Dabber per se, but I can still play a mutated raccoon, so that's what I'm going with.

Alas, all they have for a portrait is one raccoon, which looks like the Wikipedia picture for the raccoon subspecies that lives  in the Florida Keys. Maybe if he gets some armor at some point I could use a 'warrior' pic. Of course, then you wouldn't know he was a raccoon.

Gamma World is supposed to be a FUN game, so here's hoping that that's what it turns out to be!

15. The Sleeping Podog (OOCs)

So, as it stands, we have 2 mutated animals...  If no one takes a pure strain human, you could always change the premise of Far-Go from a human colony wary of mutated outsiders to a mutant colony wary of pure strain outsiders (maybe fearing the knight's are of genetic purity)...  so the mutated animals can get the necklace/berry currently intended for PSH players

Pretty sure that was how David had set it up when I played back in the 80s since we didn't have any PSH and I was playing a mutated tiger...

15. The Sleeping Podog (OOCs)

I'm interested to know others' character concepts so that I can develop a complementary character.

I'm thinking about a Pure Strain Human who is a scientist/engineer type, cobbling contraptions together from the ruins... or a mutant who passes for pure human but who has some mental mutations that allow for offensive, charm or stealth powers, depending on the skillsets of the rest of the team...

Keeping with the Dabber creature (and Rocket Raccoon), Percy is a gizmo guy, too. There's no reason there can't be two of us, though, particularly if we work together. We could each have different strengths. Percy's might be turning junk into weapons.

We do seem to be lacking a Pure Strain Human at the moment.

In reply to Percy Procyon (msg # 19):

Hullo.  I'm Drudge.  Um ... I'm Human.

Well ... my Mom says I'm Human.  And Dad says everyone in our family are all Human.  But the Priests call us Humanoids ... or just Mutants, when they think we can't hear...

I'm a Laborer.  Everyone in my family is a Laborer.  We do a lot of lifting and carrying, dig ditches, a little lumbering, a little masonry.

I'm the tallest in my family -- I'm 1.23 meters tall (4-feet) and 0.92 meters wide (3-feet) -- a whole 2 centimeters taller than my Dad!

CONCEPT:
Straight up rip-off of the Nodwick web comic.

Still working on it, but his appearance will be much like a fantasy Dwarf meets Emo street-kid.

Short & very strong.  Gonna have him carry a way-oversize backpack & he offers to carry stuff for everyone.  He's also gonna have a slightly subservient quality -- he'll always offer to set up camp, go fetch water, cook & clean -- "I'm a Laborer ... I Labor.  It's what I do...

20:01, Today: Drudge rolled 14 using 4d6, dropping the lowest dice only, rerolling ones (({1}{1}5,{1}4,2,5)).
20:01, Today: Drudge rolled 9 using 4d6, dropping the lowest dice only, rerolling ones ((3,4,2,2)).

20:02, Today: Drudge rolled 15 using 4d6, dropping the lowest dice only, rerolling ones (({1}2,5,4,6)).

So, 15, 14, 14, 12, 9, 8.  Adequate, I suppose.  But then, what can you do?  It is what it is, as my Dad says...

I'm not sure I'd say we are missing one...  As I suggested, if no one plays a PSH, Star can adapt the module/Far-Go to slide mutated animals in where PSH would have been in the rite of ascension.
