Two years ago, the main group of Morlocks in New York were wiped out by a group known as the Marauders. Although there are some similar groups in other cities, without the leadership in New York, havens for mutants who look different have been quickly disappearing.
Last year the former students of Massachusetts Academy, called the Hellions, were killed by the Sentinels. After that the Hellfire Club pulled its funding for the school forcing Emma to turn to Xavier and turn her school into a branch of his and search for new students.
Magneto died and Asteroid M was sent crashing to earth without his powers to sustain it. It landed in the pacific and caused a tidal wave that hit cities around the pacific.
Before he died, Magneto ripped the adamantium from Wolverine's body. Ever since this happened Wolverine seems to be devolving into almost like a caveman in appearance and demeanor.
The Phalanx invasion was stopped by the X-Men and X-Factor, although there may be some hidden remnants still operating.
Charles Xavier died (again), this time inadvertently at the hands of his son Legion. This last left Cyclops in charge of Xavier's school.
A deadly virus known as the Legacy Virus is infecting mutants around the world and it is not clear how it spreads.
Cable has been trying to get members of Xavier's School to join him on some quest to "save the future". Their missions have thus far not gone too well.
A mysterious man named Bastion has emerged and taken over the government's Sentinel program that uses robots to hunt mutants.
