Demon Threat, Hunters, and Guilds

Demon Threat
Demons are an extremely varied race of monsters. They feed on mortals for food and have many different ways of reproducing. Some reproduce just like mortals and create new demons while others are created from the evil of the mortals mixing with the magic around them. Many can only be perceived by sorcerers. Whatever form they take it is the demon hunters who are tasked with eliminating them.

Hunters
Hunters are commonly called "Demon Hunters" because they are more widely known for their extermination of demons, but these are contracted killers that are paid by the government to execute missions often delving into the demon realm or defending a city from monster attacks. So, they protect cities against even just the natural threats of Aereos. These hunters are carefully selected and invited to apply to guilds or schools to learn to fight monsters. Once a hunter successfully joins a guild or graduates to a guild they are able to take on government assigned jobs. These jobs are varied, but often have to deal with;
  • Rescuing kidnapped civilians
  • Destroying key demon incubation chambers/headquarters
  • Locating demons hidden within city walls
  • Exorcising demons possessing bodies/objects
  • Capture/Assassination of those defecting to the demon's cause
  • Recovery of stolen information/valuables


Hunters can't just be any run of the mill fighter either. They are required to pass yearly exams to measure their combat ability and renew their hunting license (or earn one in the first place). They then must pass further exams to increase their access to different missions especially those that deal with targets within the city. To further this there is also a screening involved with registering to any guild or guild school. Since the program is funded by the government they make sure that whoever is involved is of pristine condition.

Hunters do not have military rank despite their skills, training, and the government's involvement in their work. Rules vary from country to country, but the overall idea is the same. They are considered entities of the guilds they work for and they must work for a guild. In return the guild takes on the responsibility of damages that the Hunters cause and, when not an act of intentional harm against innocent civilians, their punishments. Different organizations pay different amounts to their hunters for completing jobs, but for all intents and purposes they are contracted workers and can be let go at any time.

Guilds



Guild School
Guild Schools are institutions run by Guilds to develop sorcerers to become hunters or fight in their country's army. While the experience to attend these schools is not free since the school is funded by the government it is also not a costly venture for aspiring students to attend. Students from these schools leave with diplomas that certify them to become Hunters. In exchange students then must spend a year contracted with their associated school's guild or pay a "Training Fee" and be saddled with debt. Many choose to work for the four years.

In general guilds do not exceed about two hundred members and there are only one or two guilds per city. Those who attend Guild Schools and do not get the chance to join guilds will join either private security maintained by the guilds or enlist in the military.

Guild Houses
Guild houses, relics of the past converted into public buildings, exist to manage existing hunters, hire new hunters, and test new applicants. The guild houses then also earn an amount for providing the contract and support that the hunters need to function. They are a middle-man that vouch for hunters and their abilities, take on the responsibility for damages, and, again, provide much needed support.

Due to their direct connection to the government these guild houses can provide clearance to investigate areas that hunters otherwise would not have legal access to. They provide instructors and share their web of contacts with their hunters. Many discounts to stores where a hunter would need to replenish their gear or themselves are given simply for having membership at a guild. They can also organize teams to accomplish more difficult missions. So, guilds can be very useful if you just pay the monthly fee and pass their membership assessment.
