The world is a water one, at least as far as our characters are concerned. Dangerous creatures lurk in the shallows, not daring to venture deeper than a few meters. The sunlight, once so bright and accessible, has become a shadow of itself, the only access in patchy spots along the more risky sand bars.
Yan Ziank, the capital city of Cowansha Ait, is several days travel away from where our story starts. Large, dormant volcanic tubes make for excellent homes and offices along the deep set city. Luminous plants cast light and even some more sophisticated electric lights span the more wealthy tubes. More than that, though, is the bioluminescence that has evolved among the vanorians. They have the ability to brighten or darken it, according to their needs.
Mith, a 17-year old vanora, lives on the most precarious sand bar of all. Less than an hour away from the feared trench, she helps run the family farm. Most of their food goes to the capital, where she helps deliver twice a year.
Despite multiple warnings, Mith continues to explore the trench, bringing home odd treasures that she finds and securing them in a small nearby cave...
