Portal to the 'Cancerverse' is opened. This is done as a backwards timeline given known events. The actual day and people responsible for open the portal is unknown.

-1 hour later.

Alpha Man, alerted to the portal by unknown methods, tries to seal the portal. As a result he is infected and fails to do so. The Haze is unleashed into Earth's atmosphere.

-2 hours later.

Alpha Man attacks the Justice Brigade's HQ, Freedom Tower. There he manages to kill the team one by one and infect any survivors. Night Watchman is missing, but everyone else is ether infected or killed outright. Blur tries to escape after his infection, attempting to shut down the Haze. However, he becomes an intangible wraith. The Haze cuts off Earth from outside help. Magic users start to feel a loss in their powers.

-3 hours later.

Amazonian returns to her island and infects the populace. Atlantean goes into the deep, thought to go and infect the people of Atlantis. Download burns out the World Wide Web. Alpha Man starts to infect the US populace, starting with the various military bases. Then he and Download take out the various nuclear weapons all over the earth.

-6+ hours later.

Most governments have fallen due to human infected, Amazonian Omega infected, or the Former members of the Justice Brigade. Canada manages to hold out due to organization and its people remaining loyal. So does the cities of New Zealand. However, it seals off its cities with the science of Doctor Quantum, who is working with a super villain named Thinkmaster. These fields are able to seal off several cities throughout the world like Tokyo, Berlin, Helsinki, Amsterdam, Stockholm, and Seoul. However, it also traps those within. Fears of running out of food and water are a major concern.

-2 Months later.

The shielded cities are often assaulted by the Omega infected. Berlin falls to Alpha Man. Other shielded cities are beset by refugees that manage to slip by the waves of Infected Betas hammering at the field. However, those refugees are unable to get inside as those within cannot turn off the shield. Doctor Quantum is infected by Alpha Man when he finds a way to leave the shielded Toronto. Thinkmaster has to kill him to keep the former hero from using his knowledge to bypass the field. However, the former villain figures out how to get non living things through the field-like food.

-3 months later.

Thinkmaster starts a new world wide organizations, the Freebooters. These are agents she has outside the energy fields that he has recruited to get needed survival items into the shielded cities. Freebooters are often killed or infected in their efforts. As a result, both human and metahumans are equally as likely to be members. Mostly to insure any loved ones within the shielded cities get first dibs on food and supplies.

Despite the short period of time, Earth's plants have been energized by the Haze. Cities are often overgrown jungles. Animals that are not infected run free. The sky is coated with the other worldly red, and even the stars are obscured at night.
