Yeah, it's just a shame that at the end of the day, the only thing Chaos really values is your capacity to throw down, because if you're not at a certain level you just get killed and replaced by someone who is, killed by some Imperial strike force, or enslaved, or otherwise turned to a puppet, because you'll just never catch up to their capacity to inflict violence and violence is always a viable answer to your problems.

Again, it's very fitting to the setting that your capacity to rise the ladder is based entirely on whether you had the good luck to be turned to a posthuman before you got on it or not.  But what is narratively accurate in a setting like this tends to directly conflict with it being fun to play as.

But at the end of the day, I want to kick the Imperium in the shins a few times as someone who wasn't actually born into it and was doing pretty well for themselves until they rolled in and Ruined Everything.  I'd appreciate actually having a chance of success, but this has always been a bit of a forlorn hope :P

You also roll stats straight down so the game cares very little what your vision for your character was.

EDIT: are there rules/rarities for the combi-weapon variants anywhere?

Sir Swindle:
Lol, it was our idea to play. Presumably we all knew what we were getting into. The game doesn't actually say that humans "catch up" so much as they have options that aren't combat.

Honestly more concerned abotu scaring the GM off...

Tome of Blood has them IIRC.

In reply to Sir Swindle (msg # 59):

Oh! I wasn't going to get the gun for free, it was going to be in place of the usual default equipment. I actually have most of the stats for hive-trash weapons available and mean to substitute them until such time as we do some looting.

Also, you're right... I should take 'Hulking'. I may pair it with 'Bulging Biceps' though, not that it's likely to come up often.

In reply to TMTO (msg # 60):

Yeah, you're probably right and maybe I'll take a Fel hit, I just kind of want to hang onto enough Int to be able to make tactics checks from time to time. ^_^

That's not the point it's that you are getting your thematic gear at CC only because you want to have your special concept.

The rest of us get what we get and have to spend our free picks on good/thematic stuff.

Like I realize your thing isn't GOOD per se but if I wanted a force whip rather than a force sword I would have to buy it or ask for special dispensation from the SG.

On the up side your Harpoon can probably be Best quality and special pattern since it's probably not that rare. Seems like it's an exotic weapon tho...

Re: OOC

I was just thinking that Big Hive Mutants ought to be a human Archetype. How's this?

Characteristic Bonus: Big Hive Mutants gain +5 S, +5 T, -5 Ag, -5 Fel, and their choice between +5 WS or BS.

Starting Skills: Athletics, Awareness, Dodge, Parry, Command or Intimidate, Survival or Stealth

Starting Talents: Bulging Biceps, Weapon Training (Primary, SP), Iron or Light Sleeper, Peer (Mutants), Peer (Workers) or Disturbing Voice, Pity The Weak or Double Team, Resistance (Toxins)

Starting Traits: Big Frigger, Natural Armor (4),  Natural Weapons (Ham Fists) Unnatural Strength (+4), Unnatural Toughness (+4), Regeneration (0), Size 5 (Hulking), Sturdy

Big Frigger - Being a Big Frigger is like wearing power armor but without the power or the armor. You get -10 to fine manipulation, your lumpy misshapen body needs custom armor made for it (one step rarer than usual, power armor is 2 steps rarer) and people treat you like a Chaos Space Marine since you're such a big and obvious target. Much like CSMs, you have problems using human scale gear on account of your hands being the size of people's torsoes (this should impose a -5 penalty at most for human scale weaponry, unless you customize it with a brief procedure (TM). On the plus side, you can use CSM gear with no problems at all. CSMs will probably take exception to a mutie casually handling their wargear though.

Starting Gear: Common Craftsmanship Harpoon Gun, Poor Craftsmanship Autogun or Shotgun, Common Craftsmanship Great Weapon or Legion Combat Knife, Underhive Leathers, Loot Sack

Wounds: 18+1d5

SPECIAL ABILITY: LET'S DO THE TWIST AGAIN
As a filthy underhive mutant your genes are already a melange of DNA, Warp energy, toxins and who knows whatever the fuck else is in there. You start with an amusing set of Traits and every time you gain a Gift of the Gods, you may also gain a new Trait from the following list or improve an existing trait.

Amphibious
Deadly Natural Weapons
Multiple Arms (+1 each time)
Natural Armor (+2 each time)
Regeneration (+1 each time)
Toxic (+1 each time)
Fear (+1 each time)
Sonar Sense
Unnatural Characteristic (Strength or Toughness, +1 each time)
Unnatural Senses (Per score)
Undying (requires Amphibious)

DH 2 has Mutant. I think they get to roll twice and take their preference when they get a mutation.

This is better as an archetype than a race for sure.

I think I came off meaner than I meant to earlier. My point was I could make a 'balanced' custom kit that gives me exactly what I want for any concept be it dull or boring. Because as we've seen with Marines, the game places a (probably undue) premium on options/flexibility. So my custom set up will always just be better than an existing archetype shoe horned into my near concept.

Like just look at Long War Veteran. I could play any normal archetype as a LWV and get like 4k experience extra (and no starting psychic powers because they didn't lump those into sorcerer. Which is lame)

In reply to Sir Swindle (msg # 85):

 Ohhhhh, gotcha!

Well, the Harpoon gun is frankly a piece of utter crap but it's scenic as all hell... I was also going to go for a Volg Meat Hammer instead of a sidearm and spend my acquisition on a 'nice' physical, unpowered sword. Fair that it's an unusual item though, I'm just not really sure that it's... Y'know, worth anything. I suppose I could ditch the good melee weapon to start with the harpoon if you think that's fair?

In reply to TMTO (msg # 86):

That's very cool actually. The unnatural stats and armour are way too high and I'd halve them all though, since Marines are meant to be stupidly superhuman in every possible way and can arm-wrestle an Ogryn and expect to win.

I've a sheet up for the DM now, but I could easily see using this instead if people like it.

I was coming from the point of view that Mr. Big Hive Mutant is going to play on the Marine's field while not getting any of the Marine's built-in organs, Black Carapace, psycho-conditioning, wargear etc. so he should at least get SOMETHING back for it. That makes him a direct contender with the Renegade for "human-scale combatant", but the Apostate gets way better combat talents, training and gear.

Well, that's fine too. If I was in it for the power, I'd go marine. Mostly, I just rather like the idea of resurrecting as much of my old Scavver gang as I can.

Not quite sure how best to do decent minions, but I expect that they're mostly going to be local colour anyhow.

Simplest way is to get Horde Minions of Chaos, but those need lots of Fel and Infamy though.

I think you are trying to start the character earlier in his career than is reasonable. If you are a BC character then you are a veteran of a thousand battles even as a human.

We are supposedly DH characters +7k xp. So like this is the end state of a Neceomunda character not the point where you have crap gear.

Actually, I quite like the harpoon gun after taking a few more looks at it. Leaving aside the joy of shooting someone with a gigantic metal spear and reeling them in, it's a surprisingly practical thing for bringing down a tough bastard.

Needs Mono to get some pen and lose primitive but that's pretty cheap.

Mono technically doesn't work with ranged weapons. It should, though. Anyway I was envisioning a Khornate Chosen sticking a prissy little Slaaneshi magus with a harpoon and slowly dragging him in while winding up a chainaxe swing.

Yes, and also no... Shog (this guys name) career began at the bottom of a hive sump... Being with you guys after ascending all the way to the top of a spire is thousands of experience worth of progress...

And yeah, the harpoon gun's just a really fun weapon concept, although I was thinking that if I really needed to step it up some, I could use it as the basis of a PIAT mortar with Krak grenades, once some more requisitions become available.

But yeah, the whole angle of 'yoink!' is one I used in Necromunda to vast amusement. ^_^

So, what does Shog want from the path of glory? I honestly think Chastitia might have a soft spot for Shog, largely because she was from the equivalent of the hive underlevels herself.

Honestly it's decent damage. Especially with the crippling if we need to strike and fade. Like I said with mono (a reasonable ask) you lose primitive and gain pen 1(?)

An extended mag and you are good to go.

Pen 2, actually. The fun thing is that belt feeds are actually compatible with them, so you can give them a clip size of 100...

Not having to live in the bottom of a pit, revenge on the Imperium for condemning his kind, power and respect, comfort for his people... The usual.

A magazine might be difficult to manage, but you could probably cut a little time off of reloading that way - it's hand-cranked, after all... I'm picturing some big-ass lever or a loading drill like the PIAT's 'brace your feet on the shoulder-plate, take a good grip and pull like you're lifting a car or something'.

And I hope not, they might just be busy for a day or two. ^_^
