I'm admittedly not sure how Cennet can factor into this other than stay on board and assist with directing augury efforts. Or just contributing political weight though I doubt many of the factions will care about the presence of the Navis Nobilite in any force outside of fleet in orbit.

Gregory is aware of them, he just doesn't factor them into his planning because he assumes they're for the private use of the Kaptin and her elite guard. Similarly, he doesn't pry too much into them.

Would be fun to look into it, though.

My understanding is that they (Landraider, 2x Land Speeders) were gifted to us by the Sons of Orar and have been retrofitted to standard human occupants. Should they have a spaceport/airport we can land the Aquila, halo barges and the Land Raider/Chimeras and troopers as a show of force but we present as diplomatic. Maybe a luxury ground care as well.

While it is no doubt more polite to use a spaceport, or at least big airport, I am fairly sure that the technology would allow you to drop those vehicles off on any open field, and most urban areas if you don't mind a little bit of collateral damage.

Maybe, although STC-derived roadlaying formula might well mean 'ferrocrete for days, son!'. Weirdly, civil engineering doesn't seem to make it into much of the lore but it's easy to imagine a Leman Russ wrecking tarmac or rolling happily over a near-indestructible Imperial road surface, depending upon whether the author even thinks about that stuff. ^_^

I will be posting on all relevant threads here on Tuesday at the lasts, sooner if I can but I don’t want to rush this at such a crucial time.

All senior officers rank 3+ will get the following

Spoiler text: (Highlight or hover over the text to view)
They warn that there is some sort of temporal distortion at work here, according to the imperium, Gelron disappeared twelve hundred years ago and reappeared last year but according to the people here on the ground they had ‘an event’ 180 years ago and have been here, around this star for all that time. Also ‘the event’ destroyed all people with psychic ability and all orbital facilities, except the manufactorum as well as corrupted cogitator memory banks and general and wide spread confusion and memory loss. No one really knows much of things before the event, even those still alive who lived through it have only vague and fuzzy memories.

After the event people tried to resume normal life though they were cut off from the Empire, the resumed their production and dispatching materials to the manufactorum which was still in orbit according to what they did know. Over time a shadow began to develop on the planet surface, insignificant at first but it grew and grew until it began to affect food production. Demands from the area to the north that was still producing food, grew and grew until they could no longer meet their own demands and they refused to send more, though they still met their industrial material quota. Which brings us to the current situation.

I wanted Gregory to conduct a little experiment while we're planetside. Is it possible to modify void distress beacons to emit a signal that only the Lament would be able to pick up, and have it provide accurate positional data from planetside? Was thinking if we could make orbital artillery targeting beacons that would essentially give us several "safe" orbital bombardments at the cost of having to hand-deliver the beacons.

While the point is to achieve optimal accuracy, a fun thing to consider for the targeting beacon would be to ruggedize it to the point it could survive deployment by mortar. At that point, the team potentially doesn't even have to get all that close to deploy it and makes retrieval of said team a bit easier even if it's a tad louder than infiltrating.

My plan was to deploy it by missile, and eventually to embed some kind of dormancy-wakeup switch into it so that we can slip it somewhere in a dormant state, then broadcast a wide area signal to wake it up and start transmitting the "hit me" signal. Or we could deliver it by servo skull or cherubim...

While it is somewhat variable based on the size of the planet and star the 'quite high' interpretation will remain accurate.  For example Our own L1 point is about 1.5 million kilometers, or 0.01 au, from Earth in the direction of the Sun.

My thoughts on the next steps

1. Confirm military strengths and set up a liaison officer(s) aboard our ship and send a nameless mid-level officer to them in exchange.

2. See if we can contact Gelron Primary again, if not descend enforce just outside the city or at an aerodrome, with NA representatives.

3. depending on how that goes we go investigate the disk.

Honestly the shadow disk seems like more of an issue than the struggles on the planet. None of the factions seem "bad" so long as they don't stalemate for too long it seems mostly irrelevant who wins so long as they bend the knee at the end.

It also seems like the disk is the cause of most of the problems due to reducing the planet's capacity to grow food. If we got rid of it or moved it to a more acceptable location we'd have the ideal carrot to get everyone on our side.

Ideally, we don't need to move it. It's in a stable orbit as it is and it's presumably there for a reason.

Jak's current optimal solution is just to tilt the thing, either using its own station-keeping thrusters or the Pious Lament. Once it's edge-on to the planet it'll be no problem.

That leaves us with the disk to plunder for the countless megatons of space-rated materials it represents or to keep in place if it turns out that it needed to be there all of a sudden.

Probably not. No sigh of a shipyard here. But megatons of forged adamantine? And a presumably STC-pattern manufactorum to work them?

This place could be an insane gold mine of worked goods and it's not on the Administratum levy rolls for this sector. With the right politicking, it could be functionally tax-free profit, especially if we make a point of observing that any tax it does owe would be leaving this sector's accounts and that it's going to be able to make a disproportionate tithing impact once up and running.

Said it before and I'll say it again... We don't need to move the shade, that'll take ridiculous amounts of energy... We just need to tilt it. We can manage that with comparatively little effort - probably using the very drones that are constructing the thing.

Added bonus: Because we're not demolishing or removing their shield, it'll be a significantly easier sell to the various local power groups.

Slight imprecision of speech on that on my part, meant to imply that option as well and flubbed the words. Ultimately, though, even tilting it may impact it's orbit potentially but probably not enough to break geo-stationary... Though I'm curious if it has a micro-propulsion system to maintain it's present orbit that we couldn't, ahem, usurp to that end.

Just a little reminder here, as always, information is handed out to individual players and it is their job to ensure it reaches the people it most concerns, please don’t assume that other characters know stuff just because yours does.

The threads are open to all of you so you can keep an eye on what others are up to but, not everyone is doing that, some people prefer to stich to their own thread, and of course it would be metagaming to act on information from another thread anyway.

Generally speaking the hard part about orbital bombardment is aiming it, if you have a targeting beacon of some sort you can hit it with a laser, but you probably want a smaller laser rather than trying to drop the power use/output of a big one.

In reply to Cennet Melek Shiraishi (msg # 129):

I get the distinct sense that The Imperium generally considers 'precision strikes' to be anything up to 'only a few hundred guardsmen were killed wiping out that enemy strongpoint'

That said, they're plenty able to smash a nearby mountain or something, and if you want to bring the other side to the table, casually terraforming the landscape and letting them know you're willing to do it to them is a good opening of negotiations.

On the other hand, without knowing what they actually want, there might not be any point. If they want a cut to the ruinous tithes and a return to sunlight... Then we might be able to extract concessions from them for something that's already going to happen anyway. ^_^

Best figures I can dig up put lances in the mid-to-high kilotonne range, but sort-of-accurate, and macrobatteries in the low-kilotonne range, but making up for it with volume. Neither of these weapons are especially accurate firing into atmosphere and both of them represent a Bad Day for the folks on the ground.

 Woo!

My only complaint is that I want to do more stuff like Chapter 1, Adeptus Mechanicus, and for three reasons:

It's low priority for the GM compared to the main thread, but gives us stuff to do when we're not the priority in the main thread.

It's a great way to have interesting things happening on the ship that show us more about her past.

It's a fantastic 'fix' for the perennial question 'why are these important officers down on the planet when they have twenty thousand mooks on-hand' because it's our day job. ^_^

For a game this big it seems to be running fairly smoothly.  The only times I have seen anything even slightly better the GM posts would have some kind of OOC time prediction, like 5 or 10 days, until the next time when each scene would move forward so people who wanted to post in the present tense would have some idea of when they needed to do something, or post after the scene advances with past tense to catch up without altering the overall results.

That sort of thing helps coordinate multiple threads on the same timeline.  It isn't exactly like rounds in combat because the actual in game time between each step isn't restricted or small, but it gives a similar narrative style breakdown of phases of activity being consistent with each other.

Oooh! Good point! Better timekeeping. I'm on record as preferring canonically large star systems over this tiny one, but since Jak crafts stuff in part of his downtime, knowing how much of it passes is a good way to tool folks up (while petitioning him for things and providing resources is a good way to secure a place in the queue).

Well done everyone, mission successfully accomplished.

I’ll be kicking off a new adventure in the new year, there will be a gap of several months game time before then which will give us time to set things up over holiday period.

You guys have the gratitude of no less an organisation than Adeptus Terra, you also have recovered a significant SCT fragment for the Mechanicus and have established a good repour with a senior inquisitor so a lot of doors are open to you. Would you like a new ship, designed by yourselves, this would be part of the Saoires fleet when the Pious Lament is handed back to the Velspars. This is optional, you can keep the Lament if you wish.

You also have the opportunity here to change your character, for starters everybody gets 1,000 EX to make changes and improvements and, on a case by case basis, I will consider allowing you to switch points between skills and swap talents that you find you don’t use. Or you could create a new character for the new game with points to bring it on par with the existing characters.

All input gratefully received.

I positively love The Lament because of the sheer amount of undiscovered space and horrible mysteries lurking in the hull. Jak can literally spend his entire life going from compartment to compartment repairing things in there.

Character-wise, I'm quite happy with him, as he's proven stupidly qualified at the thing he's meant to be good at and wildly inconsistent at everything else, just like he's meant to be.

My main interest now is in actually getting him a bloody mechandrite so he looks like an actual Tech-priest and then working on the rest of his augmentations. He will naturally be stupidly proud of the STC fragment delivery and lobby to be the one delivering it.

Oh! And he'll be presenting Jade with her gift when it looks like they're about to leave.

Gregory's happy with the lament as it is. Personally I have an idea for a new Master of Arms/First Officer type (filling the same role, I just wanted to try something different). Gregory's a perfectly serviceable character so I feel bad about sidelining him though.

EDIT: that said I have one leetlr change to make if I stick with Gregory, which is likely.

As for a vessel, I think the Captian would be designing it, no? Maybe with a few extra strike craft bays in it so we can re-enact Operation Market Garden / Dresden with meltabombs and Valkyries.

The Lord Daros only tool 11 years over a feral world and this forgeworld can put together a a newer, easier design like a Voss pattern ship, they should have a small fleet together for me in a decade!

I think we need to hit up a breaker yard and look for workable hulls and parts, a fleet is needing to be gathered for ongoing missions, transports to move goods around, raiders and frigates to escort and a could light cruisers to provide more meaningful support.w

A Universe-class would be like the mothership from the Homeworld series. It's also the kind of thing the Spacedock Pier thing would be made for, IIRC...

Yeah, that's what I meant. Broadside slots for landing bays, leave the dorsal/prow slots for ordnance and dedicated bombardment cannons. You could exile Gregory onto it! And the Defiant hull is a great choice. My only regret is that you can't stick an armored prow onto it because you gotta have armored prows.

The Universe is great as a spaceport/station mothership type but in any sort of tactical combat or need for speed would be made useless due to its 2 speed max. It would be most useful if one were acquired either plodding an continuous trade loop or near stationary around a safe point for a portable base.

As for the hypothetical assault light cruiser, it wouldn't operate alone, it would either be the support ship to the flagship or as a taskforce flag with other ships of a similar size or smaller, think ww2 light cruiser with escorts.

True AAS would be a more apt idea.

As for the construction, depending on the forgeworld's capacity a feral world mined enough ore to have one manufactured in orbit in the span of 11 years, a fully functional forgeworld could pump one out in a couple years, the more exotic equipment might take longer to gather and install but if simpler more standard equipment was installed it would be shorter. If its intended as a support ship it doesn't need awesome guns or the best sensors, the flagship has it.

Would also recommend sticking Broadband Hymncasters on it to play Mars, Bringer of War as you loom over a planet, also lets it act as the hype man for the flagship. If you can wangle an archeotech drive, you can stick Supply Vaults in there. I'd personally prefer an Arboretum styled as a jungle/forest, with rumors of a band of Stalker Kindred Kroot that live in there by ancient agreement with the RT and hunt down interlopers.

 - Find Emperor's Glory, board it, kill Gilvan Vexel, take ship?
 - Maybe find privateer work
 - look for undiscovered planets to form a protectorate
 - Attempt to recruit more military forces
 - upgrade crew rating  through recruitment/training

Finding Emperor's Glory is almost certainly going to be impossible if we don't start with that, so we should start with that.

I think after that I would go with Privateer work as a focus, but recruitment and supply acquisition is something of a background process and always ongoing.

However, as Gtegory has pointed out you are just on the cusp so I am adding one extra point to bring you all into Rank 3, happy christmas.

Anyway, the way I see it now, there are two ways we can go about doing this.

If he is exposed, we need to seize the moment and kill him now before he can turtle up or hide. Otherwise we'll be making our job harder unnecessarily.
If he is protected by someone, we need to strip away his defenders or subvert them, then kill him. Otherwise we'll end up making more enemies needlessly.

What should we do?

Re: Officers Mess, OOC.

I am being driven potty at the moment by my spell checker which has forgotten everything I ever added to it, which in this game is about one word in three. I write stuff in word then cut and past it in the forlorn hope of catching all my spelling errors, but right now whole passages are underlined in squiggly red and I’m going a bit crackers.

Sorry, just thought a little rant might help.

Played and beat as an Iconoclast with slight dogmatic leanings when being dogmatic is reasonable. <.<;

Likewise, but I went full Dogmatic except a few times when Iconoclast was reasonable. I started more Iconoclast, but then the end of Act One happened and the 'best' result was actually the horrible Dogmatic one and... Well, what can you do?

Awful, awful take on the system but I loved the plot and story to bit.

In reply to Jak Tesla (msg # 289):

Lol as noted I went iconoclast almost fully and, uh, gave quite the finger to the Imperium through the power of understanding and friendship...

That said... Yeah, the mechanical implementation is nightmarish compared to the TTRPG with basically no resemblance or similarity beyond names of things. Infinite armour and damage loops available to santic psykers comes to mind...
