Game play and character creation

Expectations
Most of this stuff doesn’t need to be said, behave yourself, keep up the posting rate etc. If I see something going on that I don’t like I’ll send you a PM and we can talk about it and I hope you’ll do the same.

If your character is holding the game up because you have not posted I will post for you, I’m keen to make sure that this game ticks along at a steady pace and doesn’t stall. You’ll get 48 hours if your character is part of an active discussion, in combat or is holding things up for some other reason, longer if the actions are not critical for the game. If you know in advance that you won’t be posting just let me know and tell me what your character is trying to achieve.

Please use quotation marks, “  ”, for anything your character says, a double cross, ++   ++, for any vox communications and any thoughts should be in italics. Speaking and thinking should be in colour to differentiate if from other text and to easily see who is talking. (Only your character know what they are thinking so including thoughts is entirely optional).

The colour orange is reserved for anything ’Out Of Character’, please keep anything that is out of character at the bottom of your post, in orange and after a little OOC flag.

There is no need to seek permission to communicate with each other, or an NPC, Just send a PM, in or out of character. All the characters, and NPCs all have microbeads that allow communication between any part of the ship and if you wish to speak to someone who is not on board, Master of the Vox, Gregor Yorick will probably be able to patch you through.

Dice rolling
If your character attempts something please roll the dice assuming it is a normal roll without mods, if you ae not sure what stats or skills apply then just roll a D100, I’ll do the rest. Please do not assume a good, or bad result in that same post as there may be mods or other factors that you are not aware of.

If you have not rolled dice for a particular situation, I will roll it on your behalf. I will also roll dice on your behalf for perception checks that indicate things your character was not previously aware of. If I ask you to roll a listening check it rather gives the game away regardless of the result.

If you roll where no roll were needed, we’ll just ignore it.

Please copy any dice rolls you make to the bottom of your post, in orange, and after the OOC flag.

Point to note regarding authority on the Pious Lament, the Lady Captain has supreme authority over everybody aboard the ship, no grey areas here, it's a condition of being aboard, (and playing in the game). Your character may answerer to a higher authority elsewhere but that is not a concern here, if the demands of those authorities are at odds, you'll have a dilemma to resolve.

Character Creation

Sadly, we cannot accept heretics, mutants, pirates, puritans or extreme radicals, we will take Jockeroo but no other exenos.

I'd like to see characters initially built to first level as per the book, you start with 4,500 xp which has already been spent, (Core Rules p30), you then get to spent 500 xp to complete the character at 1st level. The remaining xp may only be spent once the 1st level character has been created.

Character creation is points buy or dice roll but in the second case all rolls are to be done in the RPoL roller

You may use the Origin Path from the Core Rule Book or Into the Storm but no free coulombs.

You are not restricted to the posts on the crew list, there are probably thousands of different professions helping to run a ship of this size and they are all up for grabs, let your imagination run wild.

For character creation only the Profit Factor is 50.

Use the group's starting Profit Factor, (50), to make one acquisition (see page) 272) of a single item from Chapter V: Armoury with an Acquisition Modifier of +0.

If you want something from books other than the Rogue Trader Core Rulebook, you’ll need to PM me with book, page number and a justification as to why I should let you have it, this includes books from other games in the franchise, Only War for instance. I’ll probably say no but might be worth a try.

Secret tongue (Rogue Trader) will be 100XP for anyone who want’s it, no need to ask.

You may also chose other items from Chapter V: Armoury that are common Availability and common Craftsmanship which I might veto if you are over doing it, the items are not appropriate for some reason or I'm having a bad day.

Everyone has a Micro Bead that has unlimited range within the Pious Lament.

Once your character is complete, and not before, you may have the extra experience points noted below to bring your character into line with the others in the game.

Once the game is under way, should you find that the role you have chosen is not what you imagined it would be you will have opportunities to switch to something else.

Calendar and time keeping

There are several different ways of marking the passage of time. On Terra each rotation of the planet around the sun is called a year, and each rotation of the planet around its axis is called a day, The year is divided into months and weeks, the day is divided into hours and minutes.

When on some other planet it is usual to mark each rotation around its axis as a ‘day’, (though this is not always practical), and divide that day into an appropriate number of ‘hours’ which are probably similar, but not identical to hours Terra. Years, months and weeks are adapted as circumstances and the rotation of astronomical bodies demand.

Aboard most ships, where astronomical bodies are not an influence on time keeping, the Terran clock is used with the small edition of ‘watches’, which are four-hour periods of duty that date back to sea going vestals in the prehistory of Terra and have since become a deep-rooted tradition. The crew is split into two ‘watches’, who alternate duties in 4 hour shifts so that all stations are continuously manned. So that one ‘watch’ is not always on night duty one of the watches is spit into two periods of 2 hours each, named the first and second ‘dog watch’.
I’m not expecting anyone to keep track of this, just to be aware of how it works and that only half the crew will be on duty at any one time.

To tie this all together the Imperium does not measure time in years, months, weeks and days but in years and thousandths of a year, as related to time on Terra. The date at which our adventure starts is 4.90.103.M41 where 4 is an indication of how accurately the rest of the date is likely to be in relationship to actual time on Terra, 90 is 90/1000 of the year which is 103 in the 41st Millennium.

Landing on Gelron was in 2.113.103.M41,  Current date, (Aftermath), 3.281.103.M41

Navigation (stellar)

I have struggled to find rules and information on leaving a planetary system prior to a warp jump so, House Rules on this. It always seemed to me that if you want to avoid asteroids, comets and other orbital hazards just go vertically, however, this is 40K and such logic doesn't apply so I figure the navigator will need to plot a course through the planetary bodies to the edge of the system, cleverly using their gravity wells to gain or lose speed while avoiding smaller debris and other hazards.

The time taken until a jump can be made will be a number assigned by me for each particular planet, modified by the number of successes, or failures from the Navigation (Steller) roll, successes or failures will also impose a benefit or penalty of some kind.

On the Pious Lament the navigator will have the benefit of the ships cogitators and the servitors and staff who run them, giving a +10 bonus.

Navigation (Steller) will be part of the duties of the Navigators under the Warp Guide for the Pious Lament, this skill might still be necessary for characters piloting the gun cutters etc.
