RTJ & Character Creation

Make a Level 1 character
Marlock's Tower is a short one-shot adventure for a level 1 character, set in the Forgotten Realms (no extra knowledge required). Read the game introduction before creating your character. You may choose one of four pre-generated characters (outlined below) or create your own custom character that fits with the theme. Please use either the standard 27 point-buy system with no single ability above 15 before racial bonuses, or roll 4d6 (drop lowest) seven times and assign your ability scores this way (discarding one roll).

Bregolad Fairleaf
Chaotic Good Elven Bard

Bregolad is an egotistical Wood Elf who has left his home clan and is seeking to make his fame and fortune by writing the greatest song in the world… ever!

Never without his trusty lute and a quill, parchment and ink, Bregolad meanders from one adventure to the next in his search for inspiration for his next song (and his next drink). And (when sober enough to put pen to paper) he is a fine wordsmith!

Searching for inspiration he heard of Marlock’s Tower and its treasures, and has decided the tower will make the perfect setting for his world-famous song... with the main protagonist as himself, of course! (Other more minor characters may also get a mention.)

Personality traits: Verbose, exaggerating, self-centred yet good natured and kind at heart.
Ideals: I'll write the greatest song in the world and everyone will know my name.
Bonds: Delilah, his 11-stringed lute.
Flaws: Exaggerates any story about himself. Drunkard.


Corban Axehand
Lawful Good Dwarven Cleric

Corban is a Mountain Dwarf who hails from the Greypeak Mountains. As a young dwarfling he was injured in a mining accident when a tunnel collapsed on top of him. Ever since this accident he has been plagued by an acute feeling of claustrophobia, a fear of being confined, especially in underground spaces. This fear is to his great shame and a constant source of mockery among his fellow clan.

Corban was rescued from the tunnel collapse by a Priest of Moradin and he has sworn allegiance to be a devoted cleric for the rest of his days. Because of his condition his service to Moradin has often taken him on missions above ground, where he serves as a dwarven emissary.

Corban has come to Merrywater to help the village temple recover a relic from Marlock's Tower that was borrowed by the wizard for an incantation some time ago. The temple fears that the relic may fall into the wrong hands if the tower has been abandoned.

Personality traits: Gruff, proud, stubborn, persistent, honest, true, religious.
Ideals: By Moradin’s beard I’ll get the job done.
Bonds: I owe my life, my breath, my all to Moradin.
Flaws: Claustrophobic. When underground gets fearful.


Arx (The Scarlet Shadow)
Chaotic Neutral Dragonborn Rogue

Clanless Arxfad Sil’handrasson, better known as The Scarlet Shadow, is a rare Dragonborn and hails from Albeir, a small continent that lies west across the Trackless Sea. Once a slave to an evil Dragon-kind master, he escaped by stealing and casting a magical scroll of teleportation. As he lacked the proper experience, the spell was immensely dangerous and might have teleported him anywhere (including high in the sky or spliced into a tree), so he was fortunate to end up unceremoniously dropped from 40feet into the Delimbiyr River, just north of the city of Loud Water, and even more fortunate to be rescued from drowning.

In the city he soon built a reputation as a cunning thief, where he gained the nickname ‘The Scarlet Shadow’ due to his red scaly skin and talent for disappearing into the shadows. Arxfad has come to Merrywater after hearing about the tale of Marlock’s tower and the promise of treasure within (as well as to escape from the growing bounty placed upon his head in the city).

Personality traits: Risk-taking, arrogant, unpredictable, foolhardy.
Ideals: Ah sweet freedom! Life is for living, and live it I shall!
Bonds: None, except the gems and coin in his pockets.
Flaws: Fearful of large bodies of water. Cannot swim.


Belteshazzar
Lawful Good Human Wizard

Belteshazzar (Shazza for short) is a shop boy from Loud Water who was due to start an apprenticeship with Marlock this Spring. Working behind the counter at Garwan’s Curiosities in the city he has been studying the art of magic for a few years and shows some promise. He is young, naïve, unwaveringly optimistic and chirpy, yet also quick-witted and skilful with his hands.

Shazza has come to Merrywater to follow up on the offer of an apprenticeship that will last until the Autumn. He is a little bit puzzled that none of his letters have been answered for some time now... but he assumes that Marlock was simply too busy to reply. Oh well, he’s sure the old wizard will be pleased to see him.

Personality traits: Chirpy, optimistic, quick-witted, helpful, friendly, eager, persistent.
Ideals: Every grey cloud has a great big silver lining!
Bonds: Garwan, the shop owner, a foster father figure.
Flaws: Naïve, no common sense, always assumes the best.
