50% warlock 50% sorcerer. Going to hard focus on necromancy making monsters and beasts undead. He won't animate humanoids, goblinoids are a 50 50.

Shades of grey hero. Just as likely to send an undead dragon into an orc encampment as he is to donate half his gold to feed a town.

Well I'm still trying to get a better grip on what I would like for her to become.  But I can inform you that she is a Dark Elf, Sorceress.

Not sure how my alignment is looking but should focus on more Chaotic nature.

Hello, folks :)

Valkora is essentially a Witcher, for those familiar with the books/games/show by that name!  An edgelord huntress of monsters, to put a finer point on it.  I'm not settled on race and class yet, but she'll be a strong, sturdy skirmisher that holds the front line and defends squishier party members :D

Essentially, yeah it’s like teenager Groot lol. Recently gained sentience a couple decades ago from absorbing the decaying body of an arch druid who was the Gardner and guardian in a magical garden hidden in the jungles of Chult ruled by a Medusa who is a cursed former queen of the fallen empire of Omu. He has learned about the world from her, but is now exploring it on his own.

Sooo, Valkora is a Blood Hunter, known in-world as a Crimson Warden.  I'll just copy the background blurb I wrote that sums it up:

We get 2000sp starting wealth, which in this world's currency is equivalent to 2000 gp in regular 5e currency.  I'm told that magic items can be purchased from starting wealth: Common items for 100sp, Uncommon 500sp, Rares 5000sp.  Subject to GM approvals, I'm sure.

Therefore, I've been poring over Uncommon items and trying to resist being too basic and collecting all the +1 bonuses ;P

I've been playing 5e since the playtest and fancy myself pretty knowledgeable on the system, unlike with nWoD which had me perpetually clueless ;P  If anybody has system or character-building questions then I may be able to help :)

 You can craft 1 item at crafting price and have it for the campaign if you are capable of crafting magic items.

 The exception is Artificers. They are generally considered to be crafting everything.

Woohoo, we're starting!

So um, are we an established group or did we just meet this morning? ;P  Valk has kind of a vagabond mercenary/bounty hunter lifestyle and I think she wouldn't have been with the group long, probably a couple weeks at most.  I'm open to establishing connections going further back if anyone has been in a similar business, if we had cause to cross paths.

...or maybe I overthink such things and we can just hop in and wing it ;P

The Colony is a Warforged spontaneously created from ordinary fungi feeding on the dead remains of a powerful arch druid. His leftover primal energy caused the colony of fungi to form sentience and animate the corpse along with the rotten log he was laid to rest in. Has some of his previous memories that of course seem like watching a video of someone else instead of their own memories. Exploring the world out of pure curiosity of the world outside the jungles of Chult.

Valkora definitely noticed that ;)

Valk is a Blood Hunter, and is basically a Witcher aka Crimson Warden in this game's world.  See post #25 earlier in this thread for a general description of the order.  In short, she's a durable, edgelord melee monster with a propensity to track and slay monsters!  She also can aggressively defend allies via the Sentinel feat, so she'll be a scary bodyguard for the squishies, hehe

 Alright, so I need a plan.

 Head out in the dark?

 Take a long rest or several short rests? (it's 1AM where you are so a long rest puts you at 9AM or short rests to start earlier)

 What kind of food? Rations (or goodberries) let you start instantly, OR yu can get Serenity to cook.

 10cp gets you a good meal, 1 sp gets you a great meal. These take an hour but grant stat bonuses based on which meal you paid for.

I'm down to set out to hunt the pig-monster, but it depends: Are we at risk of exhaustion or something if we set out on a big adventure starting now?  I dunno how long our day was prior to game-start, but Valk hasn't spent any game resources and is ready to go!  Also, on the food thing: doesn't this feast we just had count as eating? :P

If any teammates prefer to wait for daylight due to not having darkvision or to rest then that's cool, though :)

 This meal DOES give you bonuses until your next long rest (12 temp hp, 2 "free" HD to spend on a short rest, advantage on saves vs poison and disease, and an additional +1d8 hp restored if you recover hp with HD on a short rest).

 After this, you get to choose two of those effects for 10cp or all 4 for 1sp (and the hour it takes for her to cook it and you to eat it)


 I'm going to say no on the exhaustion for now. You've been in a carriage so rest has been available. I WILL say that you have about 8 hours left before you need a long rest (instead of the 16 hours you normally have).


Edit: I have story prepared for whichever decision you make. I just need a consensus (or a vote, majority wins. Either way is fine by me. You guys are going to be asked to make these kinds of choices often as I'm trying a different storytelling method this go around so "electing" one among you to make these decisions is also an option if you like)

Heck yea the monster huntress is all about getting out there to hunt the monster ;D

Rough around the edges as Valk is, she views it as her duty to rid the world of monstrous/supernatural threats to innocents.  Ergo, finding the town in this state of desperate fear over the threat of a monster is offensive to her :P  If it kills again on our watch then that's our fault, which makes it the priority.

Not that she's against checking out the manor, the spore rot, or the bandits, but none of those are actively preying on the town like pig-beast.  Might be we discover we can't take on piggy yet or that there are discoveries to make or other tasks elsewhere to do first, but we won't know until we check!

Quite possible this approach gets us into trouble, of course :)

 Yeah, you guys saw that right, the damage for making the save is currently higher than for failing.

 The damage is 1d4 for making the save and 1d6 + fear for failing. The d4 rolled higher than the d6 this time :P

I was wondering if chess or Val would be up for snaring animals alive for a project to help the town complete harvest. Also, an escort later to the mill Fallon wants to make a salve to help colony regenerate spores. These can be done over a few days bit would prefer to streamline so I'm not taking up to much time.

Dang it, I realized only after doing my rolls that Fallon had already done regrowth potions and I just did a poor copy :P  Sorry all for being slow posting and then useless when I do post :/

A discussion that's barely related to what's going on in game: how do you guys choose character flaws? From the get go? Or do you build your character first, get a feel for how you RP them, and write in flaws from there?

A mix of the two. I have some to start to make the character interesting but develop flaws over time related to events in the story especially if I multi class. Example: Circle of the Moon druid that had a sigil on his back that helped to keep “The Beast” in check, so the druid stayed in control instead of the other way around (think Naruto if you are familiar with that anime). They fought against flying teradactyl shapeshifters that clawed his back breaking part of the sigil. Primal energy corrupted the druid causing him to almost lose control and attack his team (gained lvl of Barbarian). Now more bestial while raging and random animal parts sometimes emerge (no mechanical effect).

I tend to pick flaws that vastly screw over my character, directly looking for what would most hinder them. Then I spend most the game working around it. Soooo, I make the character first then?

Do the pass without trace trinkets activate the spell which is an area or is it only effective on the person who uses it? Just don’t want everyone using all of them if only using one can do the trick.

 Also, is there any way you guys can come together with bonuses, advantage, or re-rolls to gat a DC 20 Survival? You've passed the other rolls with flying colors. If you can get that DC 20 Survival, then not only will you all get a surprise round, you'll get something akin to a Lair Action that can cast Snare each turn.

 Not so much at a distance. You'd have to get closer (close enough to get spotted) to find out anything useful unless you have magical means of spying on them.

Oh, suppose maybe we should resolve this: Colony knows where Valk is since we're sneaking together, so that fungal Guidance will do the trick to get Survival up to 23!

Fallon, do you happen to have Turn Undead + Destroy Undead?  All clerics normally get those, but I wanted to check just in case you have some homebrewery that replaced Channel Divinity with something else :P  If you do happen to have TU, it could be quite effective for this particular scenario :)

Yes! If they have 100 hp or less they obliterate otherwise save of 14 in a 15 ft radius. but dm let a bit slip bout the orb so may be a great advantage with the clairvoyance soell and the homebrewed Alice the Watcher. Fallon has keen mind and if she can clairvoyance the other orbs well have a map of the forces and major players. Take the orbs and turn the undead on the bandits then simply dispell all but the giant  problem sovled.


But otherwise pkease note the turn undead is only once per short rest at current level

If you have a homebrew Turn Undead then I'll be quiet, but the core 5e one is a bigger wipe than that!  It has a 30 foot radius, and at level 5 destroys undead of CR 1/2 or lower :D  Once per short rest, sure, but I'd consider exploding like a hundred zombies to be a worthy use of it, lols

The orb does seem powerful though, so I'm interested to see what alternative options it gives us :)

Not sure how Valkora is set for hiding, but Xar’ach has several mechanisms to assist himself:
  • Base speed 50' (can increase to 60' given the right circumstance)
  • +7 Stealth
  • Advantage on Stealth rolls
  • Sneaky. Without squeezing, you can move through and stop in a space large enough for a Small creature.(I’m sure this looks comical, or perhaps painful, considering his actual size)
  • Umbral Sight. 90’ darkvision and is invisible to darkvision in darkness.
  • Relevant spells at his disposal: Disguise Self (could appear to be one of the group we took out), Pass without Trace (if the trinket times out), Rope Trick, Fog Cloud

Valk's Stealth capability is to roll at +5 without disadvantage... and that's pretty much the extent of it!  I already used the Pass w/o Trace token, and it must have expired by now.  So yeah, probably Xarach is the best one to go in first :P

Sorry everybody for proposing a plan and then canceling it, but it seemed like the gaseous form thing was going to be hard to coordinate and unlikely to work out.  I reckon this attack will descend into chaos pretty much immediately no matter our plan, so I figured better keep it relatively simple and just pull the trigger ;P

 Ama is still outside, Xarach and Valkora are on the wall at the back. Everyone else moved to the front but the gate is still closed. The inside of the fort is about 5,000 square feet (even though it's a circle)

No worries.  Truth is, knowing that is all I needed.  It's the not knowing that had a fella wondering if a game has died or not.  If a slow November was mentioned previously I missed/overlooked it.

I work 8 days a month every month (24 hour shifts), so no month is busier than any other for me.  And with so much down time it is easy to focus on gaps in game posts :)

Also to main group, in case you forgot or didn't read, The Other said to look for the crest of the family fallen, which as Mateau is wearing.  He is making no effort to hide it, and since I put italics around it it can be assumed that he is making it available to anyone who glances his way.

A solid crew. At this time I don't think we are ready to go back after the hog father. But I think we can seek out the people who are much like colony. If we can get a working relationship with them we can really expand our knowledge as they clearly have a means to avoid the pork boss.

That will also give me time to figure out what the orbs can do as one whole unit.

I think talking to the fungi people is a good next step. Having the undead guarding the town helps prevent attacks from bandits.

I also live, though New Year's Eve has tricked my body into thinking I'm back on overnights which is not great for my new 9-5 gig.

And fungus folks sound good to me. I know Selgar's antsy to get back into the wilderness.

 They started the holiday rush in September then never stopped. Last year, the work slowed down considerably in December but that has not yet been the case. I will still try to pop in at least once a week. Gonna wait to get everyone posting IC regarding the intent to go into the forest then I'll kick it off.

I think I may have missed something.  As far as I understand, Jerivnar was in the bar/tavern/inn, saw Xarach and identified with him (as they share the same 'background'), they chatted, conversation ended.

I've not been asked to join the group and it would be awfully pretentious of me to assume I'm just somehow a member.

Does something need to happen as far as some sort of invitation to join...or is it supposed to be assumed that he just jumps right in as if he's been one of them all this time?

 Most of the people sent here have been sent by the empire to help deal with the problems here in exchange for noble titles (so I think it is just assumed that the people that show up are here to help at this point)

Selgar is a zealot barb 3, rogue 2. Planning to go scout. Very much an outdoor cat, uneasy in civilized areas even as rural as Darkwood. An aggressive and mobile combatant. Often going Reckless to get advantage with dual-wielded rapiers. Expertise in Athletics and Stealth. Used to going solo but appreciates the increase strength and flexibility of a party. Never got completely comfortable with speaking, let alone socializing.

The Colony is (Warforged) inhabited by billions of sentient bacteria that have taken over the corpse of a deceased arch druid. He is Druid/5 Circle of Spores. He is melee primary with druid support spells such as Pass Without trace, Guidance, Wither and Bloom. He also does undead type stuff like Animate Dead. Next level he can make zombies mid combat.

Jerinvar is an Owlin Rogue 1, Fighter 4 (Echo Knight).  In addition to being quite stealthy (and capable of flight), he is quite charismatic, though being persuasive is where he shines.  He prefers to stay out of direct combat and attack opponents through  his manifested Echo.  He strives for battlefield control (Tunnel Fighter Fighting Style + the Sentinel feat + manifested echo) to provide his allies opportunity and freedom to move around the battlefield.  He uses his Hat of Disguise to alter his appearance as needed in order to get around unnoticed.

Xar’ach is a bugbear Ranger 5 (Gloom Stalker). Considering that he’s over 7 feet tall and has prosthetic legs, he’s very stealthy and it’s difficult to get the drop on him. He’s practically invisible in darkness. His weapon of choice is a hand crossbow but he’s adept with a rapier as well and is building a repertoire of support spells such as Pass without Trace, Longstrider and Goodberry, which he hopes to enhance soon with a Life Cleric dip.

The Colony: May I ask if they know how long dead the corpse they inhabit was? Selgar has chanced to work with and for druids in the past. He's not great at names but he's got a better memory for faces and is familiar enough with skulls to guess a little of the appearance of a person in life. And I look forward to making a lot of corpses for you and the other necrotically minded.

Jerinvar: I think you'll fit right in with Xar'ach and Selgar as bestial scouts/precision fighters. Selgar's generally gonna be tough enough to soak damage until the less stealthy partymembers catch up with a mission gone loud. Indeed, none of us will be the typical glass cannon sneaky type. Excited to explore tactical options sharing the frontlines with ya. At the very least I imagine Jerinvar will be great at keeping multiple targets locked in place while Selgar hits them with Sneak Attack + Divine Fury + Rage Damage + Rapier Damage.

Xar'ach: Selgar's looking forward to hunting with ya again. I like that when it comes to beast men we have a pair of intelligent cultured ones like Hank McCoy or the Beast that abducted Belle, and then there's Cat Man who has never found a box that he likes.

By the way, I'm recovering from the flu and pretty heavily medicated; sorry if any of the preceding didn't make sense.

The corpse they inhabit belonged to the druid known as The Gardener who was buried in a fallen tree within the Gardens of Nangalore in Chult about 2 years ago.
