Re: Day 1 RTJs

Greetings everyone. Sorry for being the last one to post. I’m new to RPOL and still learning how to navigate my way around the site. I read the Amber series a very long time ago. Looking forward to revisiting it and experiencing the world of Amber all over again with each of you.

Re: Day 1 RTJs

DSPlaceholder:
Does the GM have any thoughts on players collaborating on a background?  Close siblings with a lot of shared history, that sort of thing?  I've seen that done in lots of Amber games but never tried it myself, I would imagine it kind of gives the game a whole different feel, having someone you'd think of as a reliable close ally and confidant.

Feel free.

"Begin Game" threads

I'm loading your individual "Begin Game" threads, which are group-specific.

For example, Sir Rilar's thread is Group 1.

I believe only that player and I can even see its existence, right?

Or can everyone see the existence of the thread, but not the contents?

Or something else?

I'm obviously feeling my way through the way this all works.

Everyone can see that there is such a Group and that Sir Rilar can see it (that’s in the Cast list).  Nobody else can see threads in that Group.

"Begin Game" threads

I can only see my personal thread.

Advice: groups go wrong! Keep it simple. For example one each is good, but when you start doing 'a+b+c' in one group and 'd+e' in another and then in the future want to do something else it causes lots of problems

It also reduces the enjoyment of the story. Seeing what others do is part of the story. With this then we only get to see a small part of the story. You as the GM get all of it, but for the rest of us it feels like no one else is posting. It's worth if you have valuable secrets to hide but it does increase the likelihood of the game dying quite a lot

"Begin Game" threads

In reply to Lady Amelia (msg # 24):

Hmmm...I do take your point.

In my long-past game, I'm pretty sure we did everything privately to start. Then, when two or more PCs would meet, I'd create a new thread with "Fred and Joe" or whatever and that would be public for everyone to see and enjoy, on the presumption that "three can keep a secret--if two of them are dead." In other words, once two people know something, it will not stay secret forever. Secrets known only to one can be handled via PM or whatever.

In any case, I think that's a reasonable compromise. Comments?

Separately, I am finding this whole site clunky and difficult to work with. On ORPG, there were sub-forums to game forums, and subs to subs if necessary. There doesn't seem to be that function here.

Instead, the groups provide a way to do things, sort of, but it's non-visual and counterintuitive to me. Is there any way to create sub-forums or forum levels within the MEHSV game?

Get building your characters, folks!

For those of you who have a "character name," be it a placeholder or final, and if you haven't already, please start loading your proposed character sheets including history and/or backstory into your character sheet file.

For those of you still in "visitor" status, I will get to you as I am able.

There are threads and that's it as far as I know.

Your compromise sounds excellent!

I've not used ORPG so I can't really compare it. I've not had any problems (I'm running two games with about 20,000+ posts and am in others with 60,000 posts) but I guess you don't miss what you don't know about.

I have a handful of pretty vastly divergent character concepts I'm mulling over at the moment.  Does anyone who's nailed down their concept a little more firmly want to share a super-broad top-level description of their intentions, so anyone who appreciates a bit of variety in the game can avoid stepping on anyone's toes?  Not anything that would reveal any secrets certainly, just something vague like "naval-warfare-focused daughter of Caine" or whatever.

Young Daughter of Dierdre. Not well tutored in any exotic magic things. (i.e. no trump/advanced x, etc).

Also I should ask, where in the timeline of Amber are we starting out?  Right after Patternfall or right after the Merlin books would probably be the common options, but maybe we're at some other earlier or later moment?

From Game Info

quote:
Game time setting is after the Corwin chronicles, but before the Merlin chronicles. Everything in the Merlin chronicles is canonical for reference, but the specific events of the Merlin chronicles may or may not have happened/be happening.

The Merlin Chronicles and the Short Stories certainly introduced a lot of different things into the mix of the cosmos.

And that's all grist for the mill, but we'll try to start with our feet on the ground and fly as we go.

Interesting! Will look forward to seeing just how well they do with it. And who they get to play the characters.

I’ve seen it, but it’s just another step on the way - and it’s taken years to get this far.  So, don’t hold your breath.

Re: "Begin Game" threads

Having seen how the Rings of Power was handled, I have little faith in the ability of modern producers to remain faithful to the source material, regardless of how well thought of or hugely successful said source material may be.

So the thought of a NPiA adaptation scares the hell out of me, because some clown may decide to 'improve' it.

IMHO anyway.

Re: "Begin Game" threads

Those are the exact words I used talking to my better half about this J1. But you never know it might work out. We can at least hope :)

This wasn't 'hugely successful' though. Although I like it (very much), very few of my peers have even heard of it.
