Votlung is going to be a Balazaring hunter. I figure someone should be a local and I may as well enjoy the Balazaring stuff when it's available.

I am unlikely to be able to make progress before Monday, though.

Character Generation variations.

Concepts and rationale: RQ3 character generation is great and detailed but tends to make unrealistically narrow characters relating to combat, these minor changes address that.
Most skills have been bundled and a second, less skilled weapon added.

What stays the same: Everything except weapons skills and how you get them.

What changes: Weapon skills and where they go.

- Skills are given to weapon categories and not individual skills so all weapons combine their one and two handed use, thus if you get One Handed Weapon x4 and choose Battle Axe you get all ‘one handed axes’ and ‘two handed axes’.
The variation on this is spears also include the ‘Javelin’ skill.

- The Fist bonus (ie: ‘Fist x2’) now applies to all Natural Weapons as well as the Dagger category.

- The Dagger bonus (ie: ‘Dagger x2’) is now given to a secondary weapon of your choosing.

The only really onerous part of this is that some weapons have a lower base chance than others, meaning you have to keep track of them. As this is a play-by-post game this should be relatively easy, we probably won’t be changing skills much anyway.

I'm just going to register what I've done, in case any of it is wrong or is at an inappropriate level.

1. I rolled stats as instructed.

2. I chose a Balazaring, rolled a Hunter. &0% chance of getting 1 or 2 dogs, I rolled below that so get 1 or 2 dogs (which?)

3; I altered the base skills as in Griffin Mountain. There are some inconsistencies, noted below. Stirkes me GM may be RQ2?

Skills to Add, base levels:

Butchering 50%
Camouflage 40%
Identify Healing Plants 10%
Train Dog 25%
Trap Set/Disarm 30%
- these don't exist like this on the sheet..?

Spot Hidden 10%
Spot Trap 10%
- should these really be lower than the 25% base? Seems odd to me.

4. As instructed in GM, I took gear from the Barbarian Hunter in RQ3. I get leather armour and some weapons, haven't looked into that so far.

5. I rolled age (20) and added experience as under Barbarian. Experience is very ungenerous in RQ3 but there you go. One skill increase is: "+5 to Ceremony or Enchant or Summon" - can anyone suggest which I should take, to keep things simple/moving?

6. I rolled the magic thing and got 51, meaning I am an initiate. I added some skills from there. I have to sacrifice 1 POW (which will now be 7!). I get one back per three years over 15, so at 20 I make that 1? I will get 1 point of Spirit Magic. I haven't chosen yet.

So, is this more or less right? Are we all at this sort of level? E.g. leather armour, minor skill increases over base, melee weapon attack at 15-25%, parry or dodge less than that and missile weapon attack at 25%, 1 point of spirit magic. I don't want to spend ages doing all this and discover I am in among a load of combat monsters with ten points of spirit magic and metal armour.

1. Great

2. Roll D6 1-3=1 dog 4-6=2 dogs

3. Butchering is a craft skill, OK to start at 50%.
Camouflage becomes conceal, start at 35%
Identify Healing Plants becomes Plant Lore start at 15%
Train Dog starts at 25%, needs to be added to Knowledge skills (I'll do this)
Trap set/disarm becomes devise start at 25%
Spot Hidden/Spot Trap are now Scan, start at 30%

4. Armour yes. You get the cultural weapons as shown in the table on page 26 of the Players book (with starting skill)

5. Ceremony will be most use for you but tbh I've never used it as a PC.

6. Sounds right. I would recommend Protection or Heal.

I have a slight concern you haven't quite done the chargen right. Given he is 20 these numbers should be added to his starting skills.
Climb or ride 5%
Jump 5%
Throw 10%
First aid or plant lore 5%
Animal lore 10%
World lore 5%
Conceal 5%
Devise 10%
Scan 10%
Search 10%
Track 15%
Hide 10%
Sneak 15%
Ceremony 5%
Fist Attack 5%
Dagger Attack 5%
Missile weapon 20%
Spear Attack/Parry 10%
Orate 5%
Read/Write Balazaring 5%
Ceremony (another) 5%

As an example Conceal would be 35%+5%+Manipulation bonus

I put the skills in without bonuses for now. Some people do it like that anyway. Would that explain the differences? (I'm on my phone).

I was thinking of Befuddle or something, to try and increase that terrible POW. But maybe one of the others so as not to die, yes.

I'm getting there. Befuddle is 2 points, so that's out of reach anyway.

QUESTIONS:

1. Should my stone weapons have less HP?

2. I can't find attack and parry modifiers. Are these the same as manipulation and...(something else ?)

3. For my skiills, should I put in the rating with bonus from stats, or without?

4. Should I roll my dog? (Hunting Dog p23 GM)

5. Cult - my rolls said I was an Initiate. Only Foundchild has a write up I can find so I guess I'll go with that. It says I need 30% in a missile weapon to be an initiate, which I don't think I have.

6. Spells - I get 1 point spirit magic...
Foundchild teaches Speedart for free - yes?
Also teaches Farsee, Binding, Mobility, Detect Life, Dtect Traps, Disruption for half price - should I spend my one point on one of these or can I choose another one? I might take Disruption anyway as it makes a lot of sense.

Answers

1. Yes, 2AP less than bronze

2. Attack bonus = Manipulation, Parry bonus = Agility

3. With bonus, makes it easier than having to work it out every time.

4. If you have the RQ3 Creatures book dogs are on page 14, use that one.

5.Balazar is a sub-cult of Yelmalio so you can join that if you want or Votanki if you want some ancestor worship.

6. Where spells are half price you can get 2 points, you can get any other spell except those barred by the cult but in that case only 1 point.

I chose a name: Sarkalor. I will work on the details of character generation first thing tomorrow, couldn't find the time before.

Aside from the weapon skills changes you described earlier, we use the standard RQ3 character generation right?

I filled in the character sheet of Sarkalor to the best of my knowledge (results can be seen on the dice roller). I have a few questions:

- Sarkalor is a hunter, but his cultural weapons are listed as broadsword / target shield in the Genertela box. I used the later to apply cultural weapon experience bonus, and the barbarian hunter 1H spear as secondary weapon. Do I only start with my cultural weapons, or the secondary weapon as well?

- No mention of armor anywhere in character creation. Do we have one?

- Do we have any money at the start as well?

In reply to Sarkalor (msg # 20):

You can have secondary weapons but they start at basic weapon skill level plus att/par bonus.

Cloth counts as 1 pt armour

120L worth of furs.

Is he a Balazaring hunter?

If so you get the following

70% chance of 1 (1-3 on a d6) or 2 (4-6 on a d6) dogs
Weapons would be flint tipped spear, javelins, bow & arrows, wooden or stone head club or stone axe and leather armour (2 pt)

Sarkalor is a Sartarit from the Culbrea tribe, near Jonstown.

I made the adjustments, just let me know if it is OK.
