This is a military story, and a Star Wars story, so if anything is going to take the place of magic items, medals are.

I know & you know that the uniforms are somewhat spartan, but the 'code cylinders' that everyone has contains their full record, which is accessible through the rfid earbuds that you have (when you're not flying), contain the medal files.  I think I'm going to go a little outside canon, and rule that there are pips that represent the medals worn on the Dress Uniform below the red/blue squares, and the full medals are Full Dress uniforms.  In addition, I think we'll be awarding cuff ribbons for other special events (aka sh:tshows) and keep it open ended just in case.

The above list is a small sample, but represent 'big' awards, real showstoppers, like where the ISB is like oh snap this gal is an Imperial Starburst with Diamonds, we better back off.

These are equivalent to a promotion or a new feat that you can take as part of regular level advancement.  You'll automatically get a medal for somethings, like a campaign or theatre, or being wounded, but these showstoppers have to be paid for/selected. (I have not decided exactly how that will work, because I also want to be able to grant them.  Open to suggestions.) They must be earned in order from lowest to highest (so Merit Nova before Orb of Valor).
