OOC THREAD

Okay! We have two players so far, now...

1 Human hunter, female I think

1 Human skin-changer, also female

Let me go unlock your character sheets, and then you can pick portraits and gear... and one of you will need to pick Traits and Skills...

That's bizarre-- making those sheets editable (and turning on line-wrap) is always the first thing I do...

Anyway, it's fixed now.

Okay so our 3 players are ready... but we have a 4th player who might be interested but who is still working on picking their Traits and Skills...

Since I'm dying to get started, I'm thinking of doing so and then having the 4th join the party, if they decide to, once they've got their character together.

Any one here think I should wait, instead?

Well then I'll try stalling just a little bit.

Right now we've got two humans, and one elf with a tie to Mirkwood-- I think I want to make your starting Haven... Lake Town.

SO. I also had the idea that you'd all start (except possibly for our maybe-4th-player) already knowing each other, and being used to the idea that you were about to start adventuring together.

BUT i also know some players prefer to all meet in-game at the start and go from there, and not jump over the meet-and-get-used-to-each-other stage of things.

Which way do y'all prefer it?

I'm cool with a wait, or start, although if I had to pick I'd choose the Game Master (Loremaster?)'s decision -- start, and then add the fourth ingredient!  To a recipe for adventure<strike>, not some hidden dragon's treats</strike>.

Meeting and then adventuring might be nice... And, I like everyone else's "hooks".  If it helps any, Marthine was a rat-catcher around Lake-town, and had an awful lot of cats... and never let anyone watch her work... She'd also occasionally hire out as a "whisperer", talking to the critters.  Whether or not anyone's seen her Mountain Lion form is up to them, if they've met her!

As an elven mystic, it might be assumed that Aubree would be more open minded to shapeshifters and such, but it's your decision if you want to let her in on your secret.

Aubree comes into Laketown every now and then to get supplies, and would probably love cats.  She'd always pause to skritch their little heads and sometimes even have treats now and then

Re: OOC THREAD

In reply to Aubree Farwalker (msg # 24):

Marthine would probably have some sort of a "tell" that maybe only an Elf like Aubree could perceive.  In describing her personality, with the fake-ish testimonials, I attempted a more affable house cat's personality!  Maybe all that time away from her fellows, combined with local cats "domesticating" her (as domestic cats have domesticated humans), resulted in that... odd, gven that her critter form is that of a Mountain Lion.
Anyone who's nice to her kitties scores points with her, that's for sure.  I don't think that they would have survived Smaug's temper tantrum, unless she hurried them into a sort of crate and hopped into a boat... or there were reports of a very big cat booking it out of Lake-town, with "that quiet rat-catcher lady's cats" clinging to them.

Marthine has a gun in her possession.  She'll say she confiscated it from an ill-behaved Dwarf!  Being able to change shape like she is she shouldn't need weapons, but it's not always a good idea to go broadcasting to others that you're outside-of-human... and while she's not overly fond of the thing, well, it's got its uses...

There definitely would have been many feline casualties after Smaug's attack, but I have no doubt that many cats would have survived, just be virtue of being small and quick, and leaping onto boats and debris whenever they could.

Aubree might certainly have figured out that Marthine was 'special' in some way, and being an explorer and a lover of new things, especially the strange and unusual, that would definitely draw her to the "human".

Dropping the ball?  That's my job, you're alright!

sometimes they're made of twine and Marthine is just too tempted to not play with them, and sometimes they're horizontally dropped and come from a flintlock pistol along with smoke and loud noises

EDITED FOR ADDENDUM: I'm fairly familiar with feline body language and signals, at least in domesticated cats, and am incorporating a little bit of it into her human form's behaviors.  The "burbling" is sort of that "mrrp!" noise a cat makes when they're stirred from a nap in sunlight.
Jeez, I better take notes on this all.
"Drums fingers on drinking vessels so the water is moving and she can see it.", "Tucks her head in and looks away when disinterested.", "Extends hand with palm facing upward when meeting new people.", "Shrieks and begs for cooked fish or fowl, sniffs it when offered, and then walks away.", "Vomits when she doesn't get her way.", "Interposes herself between others and tasks in an effort to 'help'."...

Re: OOC THREAD

Update: changed the rules about Companions (you're about to get one in the form of Lachriel):

quote:
Companions:
Friends, retainers, or other extra characters may join your party. They have 1-3 different skills and may be controlled by anyone in the group. If a Companion undertakes a task on their own at which they are skilled, they always get -1 die compared to if they were a PC with the same skill. If they try something they don't have a Trait for, the GM decides if they are successful or not.

Because it just didn't make sense to me that if you ask a Companion to try to do something at which the Companion is skilled, that they would be MORE likely than not to fail. This change on my part makes it so they're just less likely to succeed than a PC with similar skills/traits.

"Where to discuss"

1: I suggest a bakery nearby with stools and little tables for outdoor sitting and munching. Bakery name: Lakeview Bakery

Also, the internet confirms my memory that coffee apparently exists:

https://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Coffee

2. If you don't like option one, feel free to make up your own discussing-place. Perhaps the middle of a long fishing-pier? (The actual end of the pier will be taken up by people actually fishing)

Go ahead and arrive at the Lakeview Bakery.

The bakers are a human couple (basically picture the couple in the bakery from Kiki's Delivery Service).

You have enough money on you to buy whatever you want. As long as you don't try to buy the bakery itself, you're good for whatever for now.

Hey, Fate points aren't just for Magic. You can also use them to add one more die to a bad roll. Heck, you can use TWO Fate points to add another die, if it doesn't succeed the first time, and so on.

I think that would fall under Scouting, specifically.

BUT, yes, still 2d6, because the base for PCs trying anything is 1 die, and then you get a second die because you have the Foraging trait. If you had the Scouting skill, specifically, you'd get 3d6.

There are three ways to get XP:

Characters get 1 XP each time they:
--add to the lore of the world with Rhyming, OR
--secure a special treasure, OR
--encounter something dangerous in the wild and overcome or avoid it.

Well, we haven't done the first or second so far, but we've certainly done the third, so everyone mark 1 xp so far on your character sheets (please).

I'll move the boat downstream as soon as I'm sure no one else is gonna roll looking for trouble (for the moment). (Because if you FAIL your roll, it means trouble, and if you SUCCEED in looking for trouble... you'll succeed in finding trouble...)

Hmmm. I was about to do a Scouting roll for Lachriel.

But... she doesn't have the Scouting skill, specifically. When I assigned skills to her, I gave her Guiding.

"What's the difference, GM?"

Well, SCOUTING is for what we're about to do-- look around and see if there's anything we want to find where we don't really know if it's there or where it might be.

GUIDING is for leading the way to a place where you know where it is already.

My reasoning for giving her Guiding at first was in case we ran into trouble, Lachriel could specialize in trying to get us back to safety (relative or otherwise).

But maybe she should specialize in Scouting for trouble instead?

"Why don't you give her both, GM?"

Because I already gave her Herblore, because that's part of her narrative hook, and I don't want to get the Companions more skills than a PC.

So... what do y'all think? Keep Guiding? Or switch to Scouting?

Very tough question.    What is the progress for getting new skills?

I'd ask which makes more sense for the character?  It's possible that she's a batter guide and this is her first real scouting mission.

It also a question of how similar or different the two skills are, and how much they overlap

For PCs:

quote:
Characters get 1 XP each time they:
--add to the lore of the world with Rhyming, OR
--secure a special treasure, OR
--encounter something dangerous in the wild and overcome or avoid it.

Players can spend 5 XP while in a Haven to permanently get +1 max Toughness, +1 max Fate points, a new Trait, or a Skill from a Trait area they already have.

I hadn't thought about how Companions should advance... I guess I'll advance them after each time all three of y'all advance...(?)

Aubree Farwalker:
I'd ask which makes more sense for the character?

Ahhh, now that's a good question.

My answer is: I think I was right the first time, and she's more of a Guide than a Scout.

SO: if there are no objections, I think I'll keep her a Guide.

SO: Based on how things work... those of you with the FORAGE trait will be able to Scout better than Lachriel or Tirien, really.

Anyone (with any skill in the FORAGE Trait) wanna roll 2d6 and give Scouting a shot?

No no, it makes sense that you wouldn't, because you don't even have the Foraging Trait.

Game Master, would you like me to roll for the transformation, or just spend the Fate?

And, the plan is to transform and pounce on the spider -- or get Olewyn down, whichever's more likely.  I'm all for biting off their pedipalps, but Olewyn dangling isn't good.

And, I do think I've found another head for this adventure, too!  Someone who adventured with me in the Forgotten Realms.

Good question-- the answer is roll for it, because (see below)

Marthine:
And, the plan is to transform and pounce on the spider -- or get Olewyn down, whichever's more likely.  I'm all for biting off their pedipalps, but Olewyn dangling isn't good.

Yeah see the way it works when Aubree does it is she spends the Fate and rolls, and if the roll is successful, then the thing she wants to do works, too.

So you'll spend 1 Fate and roll. If the roll is successful, you'll change and then the first thing you do will also be successful.

If the roll isn't successful, I'll narrate what does happen (but you have to spend the Fate point anyway).

So anyway, yeah, go ahead and spend 1 Fate Point and then roll 3d6 now...

Marthine:
And, I do think I've found another head for this adventure, too!  Someone who adventured with me in the Forgotten Realms.

One might do as well to watch the old Rankin/Bass animated version...

Think what a lovely song Beorn could have sung if only there'd been time for it in the Rankin Bass version, as we sat around the fire with his horses and dogs.

OKAY, new player, show up on the scene!

Please make a post saying that you heard about this expedition to make the Old Forest Road safe a little late, took the next boat down, arrived this morning, and everyone at the watchtowers told you you'd just missed the party of adventurers. You heard shouting and the sounds of battle here, and you came to investigate (you should say)... Everyone else will catch you up (in-character).

The In-Character talk goes well, and it pleases me.

Sounds like we're gonna try following the wounded spider.

Do we wanna let Olewyn roll Move Silently for that? Or let the big cat roll to be big-cat stealthy? Or neither, just keep following and wait and see what happens? Or, heck, let them BOTH roll?

I am fine with ANY of these four possibilities, or with something else. Just let me know, here, which we're gonna do, because I don't wanna interrupt you before you decide.

Um, Doodad, you had a misunderstanding of what I said about rolling dice, there...

Basically, you rolled for a crossbow bolt, then you rolled for magic.

So that should have been 1d6, then 3d6.

But you only rolled 3 dice total.

So roll 1 more now.

Glad you feel that way, but I'm still evaluating.

For example, I think I'm gonna change Sing for Success slightly. It will NOW work like:

quote:
Sing for Success:
Whenever a PC speaks or sings at least one verse from a poem or song in compliment to his action, they gain an extra 1 point to any result of 4 that they may have. Obviously, this can help a LOT if they roll 1d6 and get a 4...

The old way, it was "your lowest result." I realized it would be kinda mean to Sing for Success and roll a 1, 2, and 4... and get nothing.

C'mon, GM, let it turn that 4 into a 5!

Okay, I will! Gonna try it, at least, see how it feels...

1. As I recall, Sing For Success was a rule I borrowed from someone else writing about Tolkien-based games (although he did have this one in mind, in a way at least), and then I tinkered with it a bit myself (before just now, I mean). Either way, let's play-test the rule for a while in the field before we talk to anyone else about it.

Olewyn:
Well! Lost the chance to  pull out something cool but I can save it in my back pocket for the future.

What are your opinions on us attempting to recover spent arrows?

2. Everybody has 3/3 Ammo.

Sometimes when you shoot arrows and miss, the bad thing that happens is you lose an Ammo point.

That didn't happen this particular time, though, so don't worry.

You have seemingly-infinite arrows until you run out of all Ammo points.

Olewyn:
Annnd I'm adding a Fate die to this dagger roll since I only had 1d6. Lets see if a second die helps!

3. Hm, for once, RPol did NOT warn me that someone else had made another post.

So shall we go ahead and apply your rolling, and kill the spider now, or not?

Armor will allow them to ignore one more.

A Mithril shirt, if you ever get one, will allow you to ignore the first two hits you receive in combat.

Armor, though, will cost you a die on rolls for dodging and moving quietly.

And a shield will mean you can't have both hands free... You may OWN a shield and a bow, but you can't use a shield and a bow in the same combat.

And, of course, weapons and/or armor may sometimes cost you at least one die on rolls toward charming people into thinking your intentions are entirely peaceful...

1: So the "Look! Elves and Men! Attack them!" is because of the bad rolls you've been rolling while trying to analyze the runes on the dagger. ON THE OTHER HAND, Lachriel SUCCEEDED in her Guiding roll, so you have time to react before anyone actually manages to attack you.

2. Reading about Tolkien spiders yesterday, I learned to my surprise that it's the opinion of some people that the only reason Bilbo could understand the spiders in Mirkwood was that BILBO WAS WEARING THE RING AT THE TIME, and it put him in tune to the frequency of evil.

Brilliant! Makes perfect sense! I wish I'd thought of that! ...is what I said at first. That and Oh no, have I messed up making spider-speech understandable?

BUT THEN I THOUGHT ABOUT IT:

A. Then why the heck can we all understand it when the big eagle speaks to us?

B. And more importantly: This game is FIRST EDITION Hobbit! Bilbo's ring was NOT evil! Therefore, it must have been J.R.R.'s original authorial intent to have spider-speech just be generally understandable! Yay, I'm doing it right!

"Great" species of animals can speak Westron just like all the rest of us (if they choose to do so).

Yay, I didn't mess up!

Thank you for coming to my Elrond-Talk. (Because we don't know anyone named Ted.)

Sure, that's the post-inventing-the-character-of-Sauron reason (and, as I said, it makes sense). But this game is set in the original version of The Hobbit that was published, when the ring wasn't evil at all (and neither was Gollum, exactly, or a lot less so).

Good interpretation :-)  Makes is less deadly at the moment.
It makes sense to me that the ring still had lots of different powers.

Yes, certainly, but one risks losing the dagger that's thrown

--in high grass
--or if a river was nearby
--or if you hit a creature that then ran away
--or if after you threw it something chased you all away from the scene of the battle
--or if a goblin grabbed it and said yoink I'm keepin' this!,

which would be very sad if it happened in the case of your runed dagger.

1: I didn't notice Martine's post earlier-- I was writing a reply to Ronald, and then it told me "hey someone posted another post in this thread while you were doing that" so I looked at the new post and it was Aubree's.

...But what it didn't point out was that TWO other people had posted while I was writing. SO:

2: Hollllld on, there's a rule for all-sixes:

quote:
Critical Names:
When you roll 2 or more dice and ALL of the final results are 6, you may sacrifice 3XP to declare a new name or epithet for yourself or one of your items.

For example, if you pick up a club and manage to hold off a goblin's attack with a critical success, you can give yourself the byname "Oakenshield." If you take out your magic dagger and stab a spider right in his stupid spider face with a critical success, you can call your dagger "Sting." (Except you can't, because that one's taken already.)

When your epithet (or your item's name) comes up and is relevant to the task at hand, you can add +1 die to your roll. For example, if your weapon's name is Orcrist, The Goblin Cleaver (except it isn't, because that name is taken already), you either get 1 extra die when attacking goblins (max of 3, though, unless you also spend Fate), or you might do 1 extra hit when you do, or maybe you hit on a 4 (GM decides what the exact benefit will be).

So, this would either be a last name or nickname for Martine, or for her staff.

Something to do with disarming? Or humiliating? Or something to do with goblins? "Weaponbane?" "Swordbane?" Or...??

And then any time you tried disarming (or intimidating?) an opponent after that (with weapons that CAN be dropped), you'd get to roll an extra die to attempt it.

Of course, getting a Critical Name like that DOES cost 3 XP. So maybe you wanna save it. I just thought I'd bring it up.

This morning, I realized what must have happened, and so I have gone back and edited the story to reflect it:

So yeah basically, while magical healing is theoretically an option on the table (an option I have given Tirien), this isn't like D&D where your cleric can just heal you between battles.

The idea-- which they got from the books-- is that you heal up fully, and then go out and adventure, and then go do something and wear yourself out, trying to either get to a new Haven or finish your task and then get back to another Haven.

Bilbo and the dwarves start in the Shire, and then have a long rest in 1. Rivendell, 2. Beorn's house, 3. Lake-Town, and then I guess maybe 4. The Lonely Mountain after Smaug Leaves It Forever.

The same is mostly true of the following trilogy, where everyone has a long rest in 1. Tom Bombadil's home, 2. Rivendell again, 3. Lothlorien. Things get kind of hectic after that.

When you need immediate help, there's the Take Courage move. When I not-too-long-ago watched the Bakshi Fellowship film again, there's this nice moment at or near Weathertop where Strider is telling them of a long-ago story around the campfire, and I'm like "Ah, the Take Courage move."

I'm gonna have Lachriel try Take Courage in a short while here, if I can get everyone to sit still a little longer.

But basically, you're only supposed to be away from a Haven for so long before you have to hurry to one again, so we're gonna try to do that in once piece soon.

UH, I'll allow that-- but I'd prefer y'all to have only 1 ranged weapon, otherwise the Ammo rule feels useless.

So know that I'll allow you to have more than one-- but on bad rolls, your weapons are more likely to BREAK (until you're back down to one ranged weapon each).

My apologies
My old school Dungeons and Dragons instincts often lead to hoarding.  :)

If you'd prefer, i can make a sling for other people who don't have a ranged weapon, and keep my bow for myself

I'd be fine with that. Everyone deserves one ranged fighting option and 1 close-quarters fighting option-- UNLESS they don't want one of each.

Okay so anyway, Marthine, Olewyn, let me know how you're leveling up (Aubree has already discussed it with me privately), and then you (and Aubree) add whatever it is to your character sheets), and then we'll get this show back on the road.

Feel free to ask my advice/discuss it with me first, especially if it involves Magic.

Hmm. I'll say it's repaired this time. But be sure to mention it if this sort of thing ever comes up again (any of you!)

Unfreldro is a "great" badger, just as wargs are "great wolves" and the Mirkwood spiders are, well, "giant spiders."

If you could find a great badger that wants to go adventuring with you, then yes, they could possibly use darts... but I think most badgers are too sensible to go stomping around the Wilderland with big people who make so much noise when they walk or even try to sneak.

As for "great" cats, the answer is the same... but maybe YOU are a "great" cat? Maybe Great Cats can magically turn into a human?

That seems like two different questions.

YOU are the best weapon-fighter in the group right now, Marthine (although Olewyn is improving now that she's leveled-up).

Since Marthine actually rolled a success with a Fate point, I am saying she can have the Fate point back, OR she can add an extra detail (that she would write herself) to the note.

SHE is asking Y'ALL which she should do.

She is leaning toward just taking back her Fate point and not adding a detail, but wants to see what y'all think.

I wasn't gonna add another mysterious forest-dweller at all, but now there's one lurking around somewhere! Just shows how lucky rolls (and/or Fate points) can lead to cooperative story-telling!

So anyway, I guess roll Foraging to move forward when you're ready, Aubree?

Unless anyone has anything else we want to talk to the spiders about first or anything else?

15:09, Today: Aubree Farwalker rolled 8 using 2d6 with rolls of 3,5.  Spend Fate to change 1.)

No need for this. As rules say: it's only a roll of ALL 1s that's disastrous.

Take your Fate point back. You got a 5 the first time, so you're fine.

I expect to post in just a little while.

Welp that's a success... I'll post in-game in a moment.

I understand spending Fate to get out of all 1s, but the way it works is 1 Fate point = ONE new die roll.

BY THE WAY, it occurs to me that I haven't been good about assigning xp points lately.

--You each got 1 for dealing with the spider-goblin ambush and getting the note, and

--You've just gotten 1 more for dealing with Frungi and his associates.

--But ALSO i haven't officially forgotten that you get 1 for those goblins you fought right before you met Unfreldro.

So that's 3 new xp total!

I thought you may be sticking to the 3d6 max unless spending Fate
{"• Spend Fate to add 1 extra die per 1 point spent. You can go above 3d6 this way!"} Rule and only if a situation lowers chance would any addition be included.

Thank you for allowing this potential uplift, based on it being a Magical item.

Yeah, no, burning Fate doesn't count. If-- hypothetically-- a person with this sword attacks a Big Thing and rolls 4d6 and it still fails, naturally they could still burn Fate for more dice.

I just don't want someone combining it with some other item or whatever to start rolling 5d6 et cetera before Fate points even come into the picture.

But burning Fate's different, I agree.

The closest I saw there was ffr034 ...not sure about that one either...

fmb266 seems a little overly cutesy...

I'll see if Marthine has any suggestions...

As for weapons... Both good and tempting suggestions... But I think dual-wielding hatchet and hammer seems slightly more what I want.

I looked at your pics, but none seemed quite right to me.

You did mention a shield, I forgot. For the spider, she would probably be using a shield/hatchet combo, I agree. A hammer might be better against a spider, in the hands of a man or dwarf, but I don't think a hobbit could pull it off. She definitely needed y'all's help with that thing.

Re: OOC THREAD

Okay so on one hand Riddling is not one of the Traits that works for Take Courage.

BUT. You rolled a SIX with ONE DIE. So it's mechanically/numerically the SAME as if you'd rolled Rhyming or Carousing.

You PCs pull a 5 or a 6 on ONE DIE trying to do ANYTHING in this game, I'm gonna let you pull it off.

I just didn't suggest that anyone try Take Courage! because if you'd tried and failed I'd have to start making trouble for you.

But there it is, 6, right there in the dice roller, so it's all good.

SO. The conditions of Take Courage! have been fullfilled:

quote:
Take Courage!
Courage can be found in many places.

--If you sing and/or play a song, recite a verse, or tell a story of heroes of yore while in a dark and dangerous place, roll Rhyming.

--If you drink an excellent brew or vintage, and/or cook and/or eat a delicious meal while in a dark and dangerous place, roll Carousing.

On a success, each player involved (even if just listening, drinking, and/or eating) chooses to get 1 Fate point or 2 Toughness back. (The GM may offer other choices.)

The best subjects for Rhyming are natural wonders, bountiful feasts, humorous anecdotes, and tragic tales of lost love or great sacrifices.

SO. Every character may get 1 Fate point or 2 Toughness back.

I'm gonna give Lachriel her Toughness back, because she's just not been having luck with the dice Fate-wise lately.

Hmmmmm... since Tirien is still at 3 out of 4 health, I'll give him his Fate point back, so he can help fight.

All the rest of you-- get 2 Toughness back or 1 Fate point. Yay.

Then (next), in the morning, Aubree can roll to guide us to The Cauldron...

This is answered in the first post about them.

quote:
"Yes, we have, Lagmal," says one large goblin who seems to be in charge of the other five goblins (and the troll), "I've spent th' last ten minutes tellin' ya, at least--"

So, Old Lagmal, and then 1 large goblin, and then 5 other goblins, and then 1 troll.

So, Old Lagmal, and then 6 other goblins and a troll.

(Goblins often seem to tend to patrol in groups of 5 or 6, I've noticed.)

Marthine's piece on Lagmal comes from Post 95 in The Mountains of Mirkwood...

The GM:
Marthine:
Marthine gapes for a moment at this strange thing she saw.  At first, she dismissed it as crossed-out letters, or a misspelling.  "Lagma... Lagma... Lake?  Mere?  Lake-town...? No..." She groans softly, trying to puzzle it all out!  But, she did break out into a mild, cold dewy sweat at the thought of Lake-town being the direct subject of any such... scrawling?

05:08, Today: Marthine rolled 5 using 1d6 ((5)).
Riddling - Solving Puzzles, to see if Marthine might not know anything about this Lagma.

Oh! This must be that story Marthine once heard about a goblin orphan child being raised by humans in Lake Town long ago! Yes, maybe there was a part about her running off to live in Mirkwood forest after a while... Marthine just presumed that that child must've eventually died of old age... but maybe not?

...she's out of bullets, so she's advocating for playing nicely!  And, given her possible contexts on Lagmal, well, maybe it's for the better.

Since it feels like Olewyn isn't coming back, I'm going to pretend she isn't here right now.

So there are 6 people in the party.

--Aubree Farwalker
--Marthine
--Ronald R. Dodaden

And the companions:
--Lachriel
--Rhoda Bracegirdle
--Tirien

* The companions lean toward trying to speak to Old Lagmal now, but will follow y'all's lead.

* Aubree seems to lean away from speaking to her now.

* Ronald seems unafraid of anything.

* Martine seems torn as far as I can tell.

So-- what shall we do?

He slid a good 20 feet.

I guess you could try to get behind him and roar like a dragon and try to scare him back across the line... that'd be outwitting someone, but you do have the Riddling trait, so it'd be 2d6 for you...

Meanwhile, Aubree: you rolled all 6s! So I am reminding you of this rule:

Aubree has made a shot so awesome that now her bow she used has a legendary name.

It is no longer just "a bow" nor "that bow Aubree was using when she shot that goblin."

It is now named Wasp, and when she is using it to attack goblins, a 4 will count as a success just like a 5 or 6.

(Did that answer your question?)

Martine, sadly, has some Real Life obligations, and so I will be running Martine as an NPC until we get back to a Haven, and then she'll "retire" from adventuring.

Let's not consider adding anyone new until we reach that point.

Turned out that the 50% movement was due to him having a Stroke and not just one but lots.  I've been heart broken all week, had to take him to the Vets on Saturday, the day after the x-ray, to have him put to sleep, he'd given up and we aren't certain that he knew what was going on or who we were.  He gave me a kiss before he went though in response to mine.  Got Ronnie back Friday, so not been with it this weekend either.

Re: OOC THREAD

Reminder: here's what the rules say about identifying treasure:

Identification:
You can tell when an item is magical because it has runes on it (although they may not be immediately visible to the naked eye!). Until identified, all found magical items exist in a quantum state of being unknown magic-wise. If a player character tries to use the magic item, the quantum state collapses, and the GM rolls  determines what the item is. As the player experiments with it, the GM informs them what happens. Does it catch on fire? Does it return when thrown? And so on.

HOWEVER, IF the player WAITS, and just holds onto the magic item until it can be identified through a) research at a safe haven or b) identification by a loremaster NPC, the player has authority to choose what kind of magic item was found. (If they feel creatively stuck, the GM may offer them a couple of choices to choose from.)

But I decided that we need one more set of rules:

If a PC tries to roll to identify treasure when not at a Haven:

--if they fail, the GM will decide what the treasure does, if anything.

--if they succeed, they can decide what the treasure does, if the GM reports that it is magical at all.

--HOW MANY dice they succeed with matters. Also, how many items they are rolling to check for at once matters (fewer at a time may bring better results).

Because the game is called Swords and Walking Sticks, I'd like the Walking Still with Horse Head to be magical please, it just goes so well with the game.
Stick turns into a hobby horse than can actually be ridden lol

Okay so here's the first thing I'm thinking:

The guy who made this game was inspired by the old Middle-Earth RPG in at least one way, and the way I'm thinking about right now is that in that game, magic items often just increased your skills.

So I was thinking that Ronald will notice that two of the amethysts are not only practically identical, but that they'll fit in the horse's eyes.

And then I was thinking that the restored staff would help with the GUIDING skill. The eyes will make light that will help keep you from getting lost.

Lachriel has the scouting skill, but guiding isn't the same thing. Scouting is for finding someplace you've never been before (or something you don't already know where it is). Guiding is for finding your way back to someplace you've been before (or helping someone else do the same).

Guiding is most often used when you're trying to get back to a Haven again...

Still... the PC this would help the most is actually Aubree, because she's already got the Foraging trait (and she's tall enough to use the staff as a walking aid, unlike Mungo).

I don't really want the staff to be ride-able, even though I admit that's cute, because I can't see how it would work game-mechanics-wise... and also because I feel like it might lead to the rider riding off and splitting off from the party, and I want to keep the party together.

And if it talks... well, what should it say? ...I could see it giving the wielder a bonus to the telling stories trait...? That would benefit you... among other things, it would help you use the Take Courage! move...!

So, I mean... this is your roll, Ronald... What do you think...?

I'm wondering what situation Guiding would be useful for, getting back to the path, keeping on the path, like Tracking to add to Scouting or Foraging! So whether Aubree or Lachriel could use it.

The Storytelling for Take Courage would be very useful for anyone, Rhyming or Riddling?

Could the eyes light slightly when the head is rubbed, either for Storytelling or enough to read a story (or walk a path, 5ft radius etc)?

Yes-- except remember, what Companions do is never as good as if a PC with the same Trait or Skill was doing it.

Rhyming.

I think that would be fine... telling stories is meant to be more about remembering them (from memory) and speaking them, not so much for reading them, though.

The horse-headed stick is sized for a human or elf.

I suppose since it's magic it would technically work for Mungo, BUT i think it would also come with a penalty offsetting it for him because he'd have to carry it and use it at the same time...

So... no?

It's at the bottom of msg #323 in the current in-game thread.

If your answer is "let's rest here tonight," that's fine-- if Aubree and Mungo agree. (Or just one or the other-- I consider this to be a democracy of PCs)

Tirien will still wonder where you want to go next, though.

--To answer your question, Aubree, any of the three would be about equally in line with your mission, which is now Get This Treasure Out Of Mirkwood And Back To A Safe Haven.

It's just a question of distance vs. risk (as previously explained).

EDIT: but to be more specific:

NE to Elf Halls is shortest distance, but that's probably what the goblins would most expect you to do.

SE to Main Road is least what they'd expect, but longest distance, so it'd take longer, which could mean more time to possibly run into trouble.

East back the way you came is in-between.

A 5 and a 6-- successful on each, Ronald.

The skullcap I'd intended for you, Ronald-- my idea was that it would give the telling stories skill.

The necklace, I'd intended for Aubree. I'd expected it would have some sort of Magic skill thing, and was gonna ask her what it should do... (I can come up with suggestions if no one else has any.)

You are correct of course, doesn't mean he thinks he doesn't need help. It's a character confidence thing.

Being able to see in the dark, move faster or have the ability to use his staff as a weapon would be good, as would being able to charm those who see the skull cap, as in (Ronald sees the oncoming Goblins and makes deep bow with a flourish of his wide brimmed hat, the light lashing on the metal Skull Cap, almost mesmorising) kind of thing. Down side, opens up to attack.

Well, it's a necklace of garnets and rubies, so that's two kinds of red. I was thinking it might involve fire in some way. Maybe she can make torches flare up bright for an instant?

"Move Faster" is interesting, but I'm not exactly sure how to make it work in game mechanics.

I would boost Ronald's "combat with weapons," but I just did that EXACT thing for Mungo, so it feels a bit repetitive.

I do kind of like the "light flashing on the skullcap momentarily mesmerizing" thing... but I feel like the results would be the same as the flash of fire from the necklace.

It's a skullcap for a reason-- it was meant to enhance the mind.

What if we go for a more non-combat direction?

No one has the Carousing trait, let alone charming. How about that? It'd give you Carousing now, and later, if you took Carousing yourself with XP, it'd give you charming too...?

I mean, sometimes Bilbo-- and even Gandalf-- just talked their way out of things...

How about, the necklace can affect fires.
Normal Fires like torches or camp fires can light whilst at least 1 gem holds a light, but a gem dims if causing a campfire or larger to burst or flare, one refreshes per day as the sun's fire light hits it at Sunrise, miss the sunrise and miss the recharge, thus more careful underground!

We can do Carousing, Ronald will do that each rest to try and get 'refreshed' 'to look like a proper tail spinner'. Then he'll put his big (keep the rain off your face and shoulders) hat on when walking around.

Would prefer something connected with magic though, maybe using instead of fate. Still like the mesmerising effects though. Flashing lights don't do that.  Maybe causing caution in creatures, less likely to attack!

I think I like it. Necklace could hold 5 charges... Would refresh fully when you stay at a Haven.

But what does Aubree think?

But see the mechanic for that would be pretty much the same as for startling creatures with fire-- succeed in your roll, and they don't attack you this round. Too similar.

So... are you okay with just Carousing (and, later, perhaps, charming), or no, Ronald?

The Ruby Necklace: A magical necklace of one large ruby and 4 slightly smaller garnets.
--"Firestarter" = Use at any time to ignite something easily flammable "for free."
--"Crackle" = Use Firestarter as part of a Magic roll to ignite an opponent's clothing (if the roll is successful).
--"Fwoosh" = Use 1 Fate to make a fire flare up very brightly for a moment, as bright as sunlight, blinding opponents in the area and even startling undead.
* Using "Fwoosh" causes 1 gem to seem to grow dull. Recharge 1 gem each morning at dawn. (Resting at a Haven restores all gems.)
* None of the three abilities above will work if all 5 gems are dull.

How's that?

Okay here's what I'm leaning toward:

--The Skullcap: sized for a human or elf. At the edge of memory, gives the wearer some of the memories of previous wearers from long, long ago.
* Gives wearer the Rhyming trait if they don't already have it (no extra skill).
* Wearer may spend 1 Fate to know where one or more targets are planning to move to next.

Re: OOC THREAD

Just a passing response to recent posts from the GM -- I am not (yet) familiar with this game system, but its mechanics seem to include some very interesting and flexible options.

Got busy with work and other things.

Forgot I wasn't supposed to look at this thread until I was ready.

Please reply to this message so that the game is "lit up" for me again tomorrow.

Re: OOC THREAD

I have adjusted Mungo's Toughness on his Character Details to reflect the arrow wound. Should I revise his Bio so his Toughness also appears there?

It's not required, but it would be nice. Fate points, too.

Very good. I have revised Mungo's Bio to show both Toughness and Fate points. Boh are now at 4/5. I have also revised the Fate on the Character Description to reflect his.

Re: OOC THREAD

I am scheduled to have my right knee replaced tomorrow. I am not sure how long I may be off RPOL.

From the images I have seen, I think it is sort of like a metal cap over the knee with metal plates extending upwards and downwards along the leg to hold it in place. (That may not be exactly right.)  At all events, it is in now, so I am home and can hobble over to my computer to play again.
