House Rules

Here is a continuation of the house rulings that have cropped up either in this adventure or previous adventures.

Molotov Cocktail
Requires flask of oil, rag/material and a flame.
  • Preparing the improvised weapon takes two full actions (one to soak the rag, one to stuff it inside and light it).
  • Throwing the flask is a thrown ranged attack using an object (range 20/60ft.) and as such the attack roll is strength. A hit will cause 1d4 dmg. + strength modifier as per improvised weapon RAW.
  • Whether the flask hits or misses it will break, causing oil to splash in a 5foot radius. Creatures within the 5foot radius make a DC14 dexterity saving throw to avoid being splashed. A creature that is hit by the flask makes no saving throw.
  • If an oily rag is lit and stuffed inside prior to throwing, this oil will combust causing 1d8 fire damage to any creature splashed by the oil. A word of caution in this case: rolling a critical miss (1) will cause the thrower to drop the flask on themselves, covering themselves in oil and taking 1d8 fire damage (no dex. save).
  • The oil burns away quickly. There is no continued effect to the next round.
  • I’ve based this house ruling using this link https://www.dndbeyond.com/equipment/oil-flask combined with this link https://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/...cktail_(5e_Equipment) and some edits of my own.
  • The flask of oil (and rag) are consumed in the attack.

15ft. cone area of effect
The below grids describe the area of effect for 15ft cones.

When aiming N/E/S/W they are simplified to 'T' shapes on 5ft. squares. (In difference to the DM's guide, the point of origin is assumed to be the middle of the side of the square in these cases.)

        VV
   X    X    X     XXX
>>XXX    X    XXX<<   X
   X   XXX   X      X
                    ^^

When aiming diagonally 45degrees (NE/SE/SW/NW) the area of effect looks like a sort of fish as follows:

      \\         //
  X    XX     XX    X
 XXX   XXX   XXX   XXX
 XX     X     X     XX
//                     \\

The final group of cones aimed from the corner of the square at a lesser angle looks like a P shape as follows:

       \\       //
 XX    X       X    XX
 XX    XX     XX    XX
 X     XX     XX     X
 //                   \\

Casting spells with a verbal component underwater
Casting a spell with a verbal component underwater is possible but at the penalty of 30seconds (5 rounds) of remaining held breath (see suffocation rules in PHB for the amount of time a character can hold their breath). If this penalty would take the character into suffocation, the spell fails as it was not properly cast.

Alternate Diagonals Rule
We are playing the alternate diagonals rule as described on page 252 of the DM's guide:
quote:
When measuring range or moving diagonally on a grid, the first diagonal square counts as 5 feet, but the second diagonal square counts as 10 feet. This pattern of 5 feet and then 10 feet continues whenever you're counting diagonally, even if you move horizontally or vertically between different bits of diagonal movement. For example, a character might move one square diagonally (5 feet), then three squares straight (15 feet), and then another square diagonally (10 feet) for a total movement of 30 feet.
